00:00It's Patriots Monday on WEEI, and we're joined right now by Hunter Henry, Patriots tight end.
00:04He's brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market, perfecting the art of fresh. Hunter Henry,
00:08long ride back from the West Coast. Another rough one yesterday. How are we doing this week?
00:14We're doing all right. Doing all right.
00:17We see the offense come out yesterday and move the ball on the opening drive. Nine plays,
00:2324 yards. You're in Niners territory. You guys decide to go for the hard count,
00:27try to get the Niners to jump offside. You punt the football. How'd you feel about that
00:31opening drive? And how'd you feel about the decision to punt? I felt good about the opening
00:37drive. I felt like we put together a good drive. I wish we could have finished with some points
00:42there. I felt like it could have definitely boosted things early. And then just the struggle
00:50after that, I think, was big. But no, the opening drive, I thought it was a good start.
00:57We converted some third downs, but we just got to keep it going throughout the game.
01:01You know, when you guys are running that play on third and three on the San Francisco 41,
01:06is it already communicated that you're not going to be going for it unless you pick it up kind of
01:10thing? Because I thought it felt a little bit curious that you guys would throw on that spot
01:16and then try to get them to jump offsides. Like, were you aware of, all right, we got to pick it
01:20up here or we're not going for it? You know, I just, the play was called in the huddle and I
01:27just ran the play. I don't really, you know, go behind the decisions and everything. So I just
01:31got to do what my job is. It's kind of hard to know everything that's going on, the decisions
01:37and all that. But, you know, I liked it. I mean, we backed them up. You know, we flipped the field
01:42basically and backed up San Francisco. So, I mean, in the end, we flipped the field and feel
01:48like, you know, our defense can play good ball and get the ball back for us. So it is what it is.
01:54You have not had fumbling issues throughout your career. Ramondre Stevenson seems to be
01:58battling it a little bit. I guess, what do you do to combat that? It's four fumbles in four weeks.
02:04You know, he's lost two of them the last couple of games. The one yesterday, pretty costly.
02:08How do you deal with that as a player when, you know, you got to tighten up ball security?
02:14Yeah, I mean, he's just going to lock in on it. He knows you're going to come after him.
02:18He's a tremendous player and we need to rely on them the rest of the year. But obviously,
02:23you know, ball security is huge. I mean, he has ball in his hands a lot and we need the ball in
02:29his hands a lot. But, you know, he's just going to have to really focus on it, learn from it,
02:36and really, you know, dive into it, you know, throughout the week of practice and really
02:41have a mentality of protecting the football. He's a tremendous player and we're going to need him.
02:46His confidence isn't going to go down, but he definitely needs to hold on to football and he
02:51knows that. And he's going to get better from it. You know, injuries are obviously a part of
02:56football, but can you remember a time in, you know, a four-week span where you've been in the
03:00huddle with so many different offensive linemen? Yeah, there's a lot of moving parts there. But
03:08those guys are battling. Guys are playing hard. But I don't know if I can remember a time like
03:13that. It's definitely caught on to us, but we have got a lot of guys that can compete at a
03:18high level. What are the challenges with that? Because I'm sure some of the, you know, formations
03:23you guys haven't even practiced. Meaning, like, you know, player X as center with the guys to the
03:28right of them, guys to the left of them, different tackles that you're lining up with. Like, are
03:31there times where you're on the field in a game where you haven't even had that in practice?
03:38No, no, there's not. Okay. I'm talking to Hunter Henry, Patriots tight end here on a Patriots
03:45Monday on WEEI. You know, we're looking at the offense now through four weeks. It's 16 points
03:51and a win over the Bengals, 20 in an overtime loss against Seattle, three against the Jets,
03:5513 with the 49ers. Why should we expect things will get better with Jacoby Brissett?
04:01Jacoby's tough. He's done it. He's played a long time in this league. I mean, he's standing back
04:06there staring down bullets all the time, taking hits. He's a warrior. He's a competitor. And,
04:14I mean, he's just, he's going to continue to fight. And as a guy that we all enjoy going out
04:19and competing with and fighting for, and Jacoby just does a great job of managing everything.
04:27Just all the intangibles. He's, he's great, man. And we, we love playing with him.
04:36I mean, I, I do feel like when a quarterback is referred to as tough, it is both great,
04:42like that they are tough, but it's also a shame that you have to see it, right? Like as a,
04:46as a Patriots fan, we used to say that about Drew Bledsoe all the time. Like, oh, he's so tough,
04:50but that means he's getting hit a ton. So, you know, it's almost like you don't want him to
04:54have to show his toughness so much. I think he got hit 10 times in the game on Sunday.
04:59It just, it feels like as tough as he is, it might not be something that is sustainable.
05:05Yeah. I mean, it's tough to watch for sure. You never want to see
05:09your quarterback down as much as he is when we've got to be better, all of us.
05:16Just try to keep him on his feet as much as we can. But I mean, like I said, he's tough and he
05:24continues to get back up. And it's something you'd love to see as a competitor with him.
05:29How's it feel to get a tight end in the end zone this week in Austin Hooper?
05:34Yeah, it was good. You know, felt like that was a big turning point for us in the game. Thought
05:39we could kind of swing things going our way coming out of halftime. And, you know, it's
05:43a great play call at the time. So it's good to see Hoop getting the end zone.
05:47All right. Patriots tight end Hunter Henry. Pats get the Dolphins at home this weekend
05:52in Foxborough. He joins us every Patriots Monday here, Hunter. We appreciate the time. Thanks so
05:57much. Hunter Henry joining us here on a Patriots Monday brought to you by Shaw's and Star Market,
06:04perfecting the art of fresh. You know, I mean, Brissette's been a tough guy. There's no doubt
06:10about that. It's oh yeah, it's getting it's getting hard to watch from the standpoint of
06:14him getting the crap beaten out of him and from the offense not moving the ball. What's he supposed
06:18to say? No, I don't know. I want to I want to bench. No, no. I mean, he's a good teammate.
06:22Both are good teammates. They're both veteran guys. But you're right. It is. It's hard to watch.
06:26And there's been each game. It feels like two, three times where he gets hit, whether it's a
06:31sack or even he gets rid of it and gets hit where he's like slow to get up. And he's like he is
06:37grimacing. And you're saying, all right, is drug Mayo's decision going to be made for him at some
06:42point? I just I just don't believe him either. Like, again, what's he supposed to say? But I
06:46don't believe that, like, we're going to get better with Jacoby Brissett. We're all behind
06:49Brissett. We love playing with him. I don't buy that. Yeah, because you just can't say the other
06:52thing. No, I mean, again, what do I expect him to say? Yeah, let's bench Jacoby and go with the
06:56kid. I don't expect him to tell him that. But that's what I believe.
