00:00Hi my name is Mark and this is Stu and we are coach developers for the Welsh Rugby Union.
00:04In today's video we're going to look at the craft of coaching and in particular the how skills.
00:13Whenever we're introducing a new game or skill within a session we use the how skills to develop
00:19the player's ability to learn. It's a process you can use multiple times in any session.
00:23So for the first how skill let's look at introduction and explanation. Always plan
00:28what you're going to say before you speak. This is important as it gives direction. Next
00:33gain the attention by raising your voice or blowing your whistle.
00:39Okay boys come on over come around my circle here for me. Thirdly keep the message simple and don't
00:45over complicate it and waffle. Okay perfect so what we're going to do today we're going to do
00:50a tackling drill. One player is going to be around the blue set of cones and another player is going
00:54to be around the red set of cones. The next how skill we're going to look at is demonstration.
01:00A demonstration paints a great picture for what you want your players to accomplish.
01:05Firstly whenever you use a demonstration place yourself so everyone can hear and see.
01:10Next focus attention for up to three points only. Okay so we're going to have a look at a demo now
01:14so I can get Luke and Johnny if you can come around my cones here first. So we've got Luke's
01:18going to have the ball in his hands and you're going to stay on the red side. Red cones for me
01:21Johnny you can stay on the blue side. So if we move in one space here where you're going to have
01:26to go. Good. If you need to repeat the demonstration more than once then do so. Never do the demonstration
01:32yourself. Finally ask loads of questions to check for understanding. And stop there for me. So what's
01:38your main objective? What are you going to try and do and what are you going to try and do? Get away
01:42from him. Great stuff. The next how skill is observation. Careful observation is an essential
01:47coaching skill. By observing the work and interactions of your team you'll begin to identify
01:52opportunities for coaching interventions. Good, good, good. Isaac what are you trying to do here?
01:59Okay perfect. And what are you trying to do? I'm trying to mirror him. Mirror him. Good, good. Know what you're looking for.
02:05Focus on the key coaching points that you gave. Can they repeat the demonstration shown to them?
02:10The final how skill is feedback. It's really important that we give feedback as it reinforces
02:15learning. Limit information to up to three key points. Give specific and simple information and
02:21most of all keep it positive. Remember though ask questions to generate self-feedback first. Okay so
02:28we've just done that drill now. What were we trying to do? What was the ball carrier trying to do?
02:33Trying to evade the tackler. Good. Okay we've just seen the how skills used in the development of a
02:38skill. Let's see how Mark uses the same process through a game. To remind you the how skills are
02:42introduction and explanation. Come in guys let's go. So today we're going to look at how to keep
02:51the ball alive. So how do we keep the ball alive then guys in rugby? Offloading. Demonstration.
02:58So demonstration just shows everyone knows where they do it. So make a touch. Okay how many hands
03:04we offload with? Two. So everyone understand the rules? Okay. Observation. Three, two, one, play.
03:17Good offload. Up. Yep. Stop the ball there. Roll the ball back. Let's play. And feedback. Well done
03:26today guys. That's a great effort. A lot of skills on show as well. So just remind me what was the
03:30objective of that game then? Offloading the game. Why were you trying to offload the game in the beginning?
03:37By keeping it alive. Well done guys. That was a great game. Fantastic. Let's recap. The how skills
03:43is a great process to help you coach through games and skills. It will engage our players
03:48and hopefully we'll bring them back for more. Good luck in developing your coaching craft.
