00:00O pure intelligence, do not disturb your mind by affirming and negating things.
00:13Silencing them, abide happily in your own self which is an embodiment of the bliss
00:19absolute.
00:20Acharyaji, can you please explain what is this silencing of things?
00:29First of all, it has to be understood who is talking and to whom.
00:38If you have eyes sharp enough, you see an apparent contradiction in a star's words and
00:51to resolve that contradiction, you will have to go deeper than the contradiction.
00:59First of all, he says, O pure intelligence, so who is being addressed, pure intelligence.
01:08And the next thing he says is, do not disturb your mind.
01:11Why would pure intelligence anyway disturb himself, herself or his mind?
01:20So there is something awkward somewhere and this has not been understood by large number
01:28of seekers traditionally.
01:31On one hand, they call themselves as nothing but the pure Atma or pure Brahman.
01:36On the other hand, they say that we are on the journey of self-improvement and refinement.
01:45What is this dissonance?
01:46On one hand, he is saying, O pure intelligence, not even just intelligence, not merely intelligence,
01:58O pure intelligence.
02:02And then he cautions you to not to disturb your mind.
02:13There is something somewhere that we are not easily seeing.
02:22Do not disturb your mind by affirming and negating things.
02:26The part after by is secondary.
02:34Whatever is said after this has lesser value than what has been said up to this point.
02:49So Shravak is saying you are two.
02:58On one hand, you are pure intelligence and he addresses you as pure intelligence.
03:05So probably he knows that pure intelligence is your real name.
03:12A fellow like Ashtavakra is not going to give you pseudo names, pet names, misleading names.
03:25He addresses you as pure intelligence.
03:30So he knows that your real name is pure intelligence.
03:46Neither Bhai nor Bhai, you are Bhai.
04:07He asks you, babe, what is your figure, say 3.14.
04:08And then here he is warning, warning, warning, do not disturb your mind, which means that
04:36man is a strange creature.
04:43He really is pure intelligence and what is the proof of that?
04:47Ashtavakra is addressing you as pure intelligence.
04:55So you are pure intelligence.
05:00that bit of faith, we can't reach anywhere, we can't even begin.
05:06So if Ashtavakra says you are Bhai, you are Bhai, nobody will talk further.
05:16And he also says do not disturb your mind.
05:19The one whose nature is pure intelligence is not only fully capable of but actually
05:25very insistent on disturbing her mind.
05:33This is bizarre, this is man, this is woman.
05:52You are someone who is pure intelligence but is most of the time seen as behaving otherwise.
06:11You might be pure intelligence but you are seen behaving in rather awkward, foolish,
06:19actually stupid ways.
06:35How do you know that a way is stupid?
06:43Look at it and you will know.
06:48How do you look?
06:50Give me a method to look.
06:53Well, looking is the only method.
07:02Sorry for the disappointment.
07:09If this has been understood, we can proceed and then we will come to that part of the
07:17verse about which Jyoti has raised the question.
07:27Hope you intelligence do not disturb your mind by affirming and negating things, silencing
07:33them, abide happily in your own self which is an embodiment of this absolute.
07:38Ajara ji, can you please explain what is this silencing of things?
07:47Things are anyway silent, Jyoti, in pure intelligence there is no noise, no noise at all.
08:02Some have called pure intelligence as music, others have called it silence.
08:12What is silence?
08:13That in intelligence there is no noise.
08:16What is noise?
08:20Unwanted chaotic sensory perception is noise.
08:38Noise could be aural, visual or purely mental.
08:50Noise could be aural, visual, purely mental.
09:06In pure intelligence, there is merely peace.
09:12Noise is not conducive to peace.
09:13Noise by definition is that which shrouds peace, tries to interrupt peace.
09:33You are asking what is silencing of things?
09:39To silence things is to not to make choices that lead to disquiet.
09:57I often say make a good choice, I often say make a choice that leads to peace.
10:06That is a good advice, but not exact.
10:14Peace need not be a choice because peace is the default state anyway.
10:21If you choose nothing, you have already chosen peace, peace is the default state.
10:29So if you choose nothing, you have already chosen peace.
10:34You just have to be cautious of your choices, you just have to see what are you continuously
10:46choosing.
10:47Choose nothing and you have already chosen silence.
11:01It is so very eminent and pervasive and real that you don't have to go to it.
11:18It is present.
11:19When you sleep, you don't choose silence or peace.
11:31The entire night you are not working to maintain your peace or are you?
11:40Do you do something to remain silent and peaceful when you are asleep?
11:48The silence and peace, the ordinary silence, ordinary peace that you experience while sleeping
11:55is not a result of your labor or choice.
12:01It is rather a result of you ceding choice, surrendering choice.
12:17Subhash Chakravarthy says, silence things.
12:22What he actually is saying is do not side with noise.
12:33Silence has life.
12:38Silence has continuity.
12:43Noise has a certain immortality.
12:56Noise has no life of its own.
13:01It has to be kept alive.
13:05It has to be kept alive with due effort.
13:10That effort is absent when you are sleeping and therefore you are peaceful.
13:18What brings you peace and silence when you are sleeping?
13:21The fact that you become incapable of disturbing yourself.
13:28Tell me, what if you had regained, rather retained consciousness and the power to choose
13:41and the power to decide and all your freedoms and liberties even when you were sleeping?
13:49What would have happened?
13:55There would have been no sleep, no peace, no silence.
14:06The peace and silence that come to you when you are asleep comes to you because there
14:14is a temporary cessation of the personality.
14:18Do you see how dangerous you are?
14:26The moment you are, you cannot have peace and sleep.
14:33The moment you are yourself, you are just disturbed.
14:46Sleep relaxes you because in sleep you are nobody, there is just silence.
14:57What does it mean to silence things?
15:00Nothing, Jyoti, nothing at all.
15:03You don't have to silence things.
15:08Silence is your nature.
15:11Just stop being too much with things.
15:17Stop being too much with your beliefs and concepts and the waves of the egoistic self
15:33that keep arising from somewhere deep in the psychosomatic system.
15:43Have you not experienced this?
15:48From some point in your body-mind that wave arises and that wave has no capacity to look
16:03at itself.
16:04It's a blind wave but a powerful one.
16:09That wave is characterized by a total incapacity to know its origin.
16:21That's why it's not love but thought that is blind.
16:27Thought cannot look at itself.
16:29When that wave of thought or emotion arises, does it know from where it is arising?
16:42But it's powerful.
16:46It carries you away.
16:51You who are prepared to be carried away, you who must be carried away, either by this
17:00or by that, something will carry you away.
17:08You have to decide who it would be.
17:18That is why poets and saints in India have often talked of the Jeev as the bride-in-waiting.
17:32Somebody is bound to take her away.
17:36The question is who would it be?
17:46That is why saint poetesses in India would never say that they are bachelorettes or virgins.
18:13They would not say that we are pristine and pure and untouched, rather they would say
18:19we are his bride.
18:28The East has known a secret.
18:36The worst is to make a wrong choice and belong to nonsense.
18:45Better than that, to stay untouched like a pristine white sari, but the highest is to
19:05be like Meera, eternally married.
19:10Meera would not say that she is single, she is eternally married, just married, forever.
19:24It is impossible for you to not to belong.
19:29Belong you would, just see to whom, over that you have some choice, some jurisdiction.
19:38And what is the best choice, to not to have a choice, because the moment you will exercise
19:44a choice, it would be a bad choice.
19:50What then is surrender?
19:54Not to exercise choice and to let the one have choice over you.
20:07Shouldn't you ask, if we don't choose, how do we get married?
20:19If we don't choose, how do we get the right one?
20:28Isn't there a threat that we would go single all our life?
20:43After all Acharyaji, you are telling us to not to make the wrong choice and the right
20:49choice cannot be made.
20:51You are saying, don't make the wrong choice and the right choice you cannot make.
20:59Basically you are saying, don't take what the world serves you and neither should you
21:11try to prepare a serving for yourself.
21:14Yes, that's what I am saying and that's why the real thing is so very nasty.
21:29It is in your power only to not to choose wrongly, then how would the right thing happen?
21:38The right one will choose you.
21:41You will not choose the right one.
21:44The right one will choose you.
21:46Do you see the respective roles and responsibilities?
21:49There is a clear division of labor.
21:55The classes have been demarcated.
22:00What is your job?
22:02To not to choose wrongly.
22:06And who will do all the choosing, etc?
22:11The one whose company gave you the faith to not to choose rightly.
22:21The one whose light gave you the eyes, the wisdom to not to choose wrongly.
22:33After all, it is not a mere coincidence that one drops his tendency to choose wrongly.
22:45How does that happen?
22:48How does that happen?
22:50That happens when you are in the vicinity of someone special.
22:56When you are in the proximity of someone special, then you suddenly get both the love
23:06and the light to discard the wrong options.
23:12Discard all that which is against silence, peace, rest.
23:21And since you are in his vicinity already, and since you are already submitting to him
23:30the proof of your love, what is the proof of your love?
23:37The very fact that you are not making bad choices is the proof of your love, the strong
23:43proof of your love.
23:45And he is in your vicinity, isn't he watching?
23:48He is watching.
23:49What is he watching?
23:52That you are not choosing wrongly.
23:54Come on, you have already erudited yourself enough.
24:03The ego will remain a show-off, whether in the world or in spirituality.
24:14So see, she has shown off.
24:16What has she shown off?
24:19Now Girdhar Gopal is under pressure.
24:28After all she has refused all the wrong ones.
24:35And he takes this pressure very nicely.
24:39He welcomes it.
24:43Now that you are strongly and honestly shutting the doors on the world and there, that is
25:06what is meant by silencing the affirmation, the negation and all these things you think.
25:23Nothing happens to you just randomly.
25:32Not even the most dishonest person would say that he is merely a puppet and things
25:42happen to him.
25:49Most of us say our action was a result of some trigger, some stimulus and our consequent
26:02reaction.
26:08So they at least agree that they had some role to play.
26:14That's what the normal worldly man would say.
26:17Yes, I reacted but for that there was a reason.
26:22The dishonest one says, no, my reaction is predestined.
26:36If a loud or violent action happened, it's all got to do with the provocation.
26:44The wise man fully well knows that deeply, ultimately he is the one who makes a choice.
27:03And if he is not yet making a choice, the choice can be made, potentially be made.
27:12That's the fun of living, right?
27:15To not let things happen to you.
27:21There is a sense of mastery involved in that, is there not?
27:34When you are able to honestly and humbly say, nothing happens to me, I don't react, I act.
27:49I know, I realize and from that realization my actions sprouts.
28:04Realize that it is your power to not to side with noise.
28:13Realize that pure intelligence is lying in abeyance.
28:22Realize that Ashtavakra does not enjoy warning you and admonishing you.
28:35A fitting tribute to Ashtavakra would be to as a disciple come to a point where he doesn't
28:49have to say so much to you.
28:54He looks at you and just exclaims, oh pure intelligence and the verse is complete.
29:04This long tale is unnecessary.
29:08What is the head?
29:09Oh pure intelligence and then there is such a long tale, which is totally unnecessary.
29:16But it is needed.
29:19Because if he just addresses you as pure intelligence, he is then not acknowledging the fact of your
29:29being.
29:31The nature of your being is that you are too prone to disturb yourself.
29:37Where there is no disturbance possible even from there, you magically conjure some disturbance.
29:51Such is your intention.
30:01And you would not even say that just because I want to get disturbed, so I am inventing
30:08disturbance.
30:09You will come up with some kind of a logic or reason or argument or proof.
30:16Aesop told a story, there was this wolf and the lamb.
30:30And the lamb is drinking some water from a stream and the wolf too is drinking water.
30:39And the wolf looks at the lamb and he has some genuine reasons to feel offended.
30:50What does the wolf tell the lamb?
30:51You lamb, how dare you send me used water?
31:06You're sipping from the same stream as me.
31:13Which means that the water that is coming to me is water from your mouth.
31:27It is used, spoiled, dirty water, but I am sure you are doing it on purpose.
31:37The lamb said, great lord, you are the one standing upstream, I am standing downstream.
31:47The water is flowing from you to me, the wolf said, oh, smart chap.
31:57But then surely yesterday it was your father who made me drink the spoiled water.
32:11The lamb said, your honour, my father was killed by nobody but your excellency even
32:23before I was born.
32:27So how can my father yesterday spoil your mood?
32:35The wolf was now aghast and boiling, he said, you argue too much.
32:45So much argument is untenable and with one blow of the paw, the lamb was gone.
32:57Even the wolf needs to justify to the lamb, why the lamb is being killed.
33:06Somehow we maintain some respect for reason and logic.
33:11The fact is that the lamb had to be slaughtered and there was no reason to prove it to the
33:18lamb that it was being just fully slaughtered.
33:26But that kind of a reverence for logic we do have internally.
33:29So even when we are going to do the most stupid of actions, we come up with some reason, yes.
33:40Yesterday your father did something because of which today I must take vengeance.
33:47The real reason is something else.
33:52You are hungry and the lamb is tasty.
34:03It's a thing of the flesh and the body.
34:13Please see that, honestly admit that.
34:30Don't invent justifications for trouble.
34:39Trouble appears attractive.
34:41You know why trouble appears attractive to the ego?
34:48If a fire breaks out in the adjacent building, many of you would rush to that place.
34:59The ego is so much in need of fulfillment, love, that it can try any method to gain fulfillment
35:14and love.
35:24It can even burn down its own house so that it gets some attention, so that people come
35:35to it, so that the firefighters come to it.
35:42This tells us of two things, one, the ego on one hand is evil, on the other hand it
35:54is very cute, cute because all the evil is for the sake of fulfillment.
36:13The ego is waiting for the one who can bring peace to it.
36:19But it does not know the direct way or let's say it's too scared to use the direct way.
36:30So it uses all the oblique methods.
36:38What is the direct method?
36:41To go to the temple, go to the temple and meet Ram there.
36:54What is the indirect method?
36:57Degrade yourself and become either an Ahilya or a Sursa or a Shukhnaka or a Ravan.
37:28The direct method is the method of Laldeva and Meera.
37:38I want him, I go to him.
37:42How convoluted is that?
37:48I want him, I go to him.
37:52I want him, I call him.
37:54This is the direct method.
37:59This is for the one who is simple and innocent of mind.
38:08This is the method of silence.
38:10This is the path of direct silence.
38:12I want silence, I go to silence directly.
38:17Then there is the crooked path.
38:22The crooked path is the path of the crooked mind.
38:38It is the path of the one who has forfeited his innocence.
38:49It is the path of the one who is not childlike anymore.
38:55It is the path of the one who has learned a lot of rotten tricks now.
39:05It is the path of the one who has been made a fool of by the world, by all the conditioning
39:14that the world foists upon you and obviously the conditioning that comes with the body.
39:28You have both the options, you can either get angry over this person or you may even
39:38sympathize with this person.
39:45That is why the saints are often in a quandary.
39:49That day you all were singing,
39:51Dar lage aur hasi aave, ajab jamana aaya re.
39:55That's how a Kabir feels when he looks at you.
40:01On one hand you look so terrible, dar lage, you are dangerous.
40:10On the other hand, you are just a clown.
40:20You are just a kid gone wrong.
40:30You are just a kid playing kumkaran in the Ram Leela.
40:38So hasi aave.
40:43You are wearing evil beyond your size.
40:49You can't even carry that evil properly.
40:52You are trying your hardest to be evil, but your problem is that you are not succeeding
41:00even in your evil designs.
41:07You failed to be good and your tragedy is that when you are trying to act evil, you
41:14are still a failure.
41:17You can't even be properly bad.
41:21So hasi aave.
41:24But at the same time, the kid is now carrying kumkaran's sword.
41:32So one better be careful.
41:36And the kid is angry.
41:52I will chop you down into so many pieces.
41:55You will pass your arithmetic paper just counting the pieces.
42:05This is from Ram Leela in Patna.
42:21What is math?
42:23A tragic comedy.
42:29What to do with you?
42:36Slap you or hug you.
42:39Even God is divided.
42:43Those who could see this, they talked of Vishisht Advaithavad.
42:49They said it is not true that the universe is purely non-dual.
42:54Look at mind.
42:56Look at man's mind.
43:00It is impossible that nothing but non-duality, Advaith, reigns.
43:07So they said qualified non-dualism.
43:13And they said it is conditional.
43:15Little caveat has to be inserted somewhere.
43:18Don't you see?
43:28It is difficult for God to make up his mind.
43:32If you are evil, sometimes he corrects you, at other times he punishes you.
43:36And he himself does not know where to draw the line.
43:41For a long long time he just tries to keep correcting you.
43:46And then you say, nice, gentle chap, I keep doing a lot of nonsense, but he just keeps
43:56correcting me.
43:57Then a point comes when he has no option left.
44:13Look at Ashtavakra, same thing, pure intelligence, do not disturb yourself.
44:18What do you think?
44:19This is non-dualism?
44:20Come on.
44:22The world is God's circus.
44:39The world is God's comedy channel.
44:52He would be knowing how difficult it is to remain a witness.
44:56Watching all that he does, it would be incredibly difficult to just be a detached, dispassionate
45:03watcher.
45:13Stuff is shooting out of the screen.
45:17The characters on the screen are flinging stuff at the watcher and testing his dispassion.
45:30Watching the TV screen and a rotten egg emerges from there.
45:35Remain the watcher if you can.
45:44Let us have a grouse against the puppeteer.
45:49Do not be a participant in this nonsensity or be if you want to, anyway it does not matter.
46:08Nothing matters.
46:12As long as things matter terribly much to you, do what you want.
46:24Your evil anyway would not survive your body.
46:29Once you are gone, where is your evil?
46:32So be as big an evil as you want to do that.
46:39Powerlessly evil we are.
46:43Where are the Stalins and the Hitlers and the Mussolini's?
46:49Where are they?
46:54Where is their evil?
46:57Show me.
47:02Evil failed.
47:04Goodness also fails.
47:06What remains?
47:08What's the point finding out?
47:11That will disturb you even more.
47:17But if you are interested in a little bit of peace for yourself, then here is a solemn request from Vastavakra.
47:28Kindly do not give power to your so-called internal nonsense.
47:39All the saints, seers are standing in front of you with folded hands.
47:47They are touching your feet.
47:50And they all have just one request to make.
47:54Kindly do not give power to your nonsense.
48:01You are capable of doing much better, oh pure intelligence.
48:17When you look at a circle,
48:23when you look at curvaceous shapes,
48:26you could either say 36, 24, 36 or you could simply say 3.14.
48:38The circle corresponds to both.
48:43Vastavakra is asking you to not to let random foolish figures crop up in your mind.
48:57And if they do, because of latent tendencies, then don't give them energy, don't give them power.
49:10Beyond this jyoti, no sage, no teacher can say anything to you.
49:17The teaching stops here.
49:19Beyond this, he is powerless.
49:22He stands in front of you with folded hands.
49:25I said he is prepared to touch your feet.
49:28He can only make a request.
49:32Kindly do not drown yourself in the gutter of your internal being.
49:44Inside you is a big gutter.
49:46Do not get drowned in it.
49:57This is one of the best pieces of spiritual advice you will ever get.
50:03Oh pure intelligence.
50:10Inside you is a big gutter.
50:16Spirituality is to not to get drowned in it.
50:30It's a request.
