Don't Talk to Strange Men is a 1962 black and white British 'B' crime thriller film directed by Pat Jackson and starring Christina Gregg, Janina Faye, Cyril Raymond and Gillian Lind. The screenplay was by Gwen Cherrell.

In a prologue an unseen driver gives a lift to a woman. He attacks her. We next see her body being discovered by children playing in a hay shed.

Jean Painter, a teenage schoolgirl, waits for a bus on a quiet country lane. She has been baby-sitting at The Chequers, the pub owned by her uncle Ron. The telephone in a nearby phone box rings and, curious, she answers it. She is fascinated by the conversation with an unknown man and agrees to chat again the next day.

00:03:08I'm off now.
00:03:09Be right with you.
00:03:10Take my table if you want, but don't stand with your wife.
00:03:11I'm afraid Timmy's laid up a bit tonight, but I think he's settled now, and he ate up
00:03:12all his supper, and yours is in the oven.
00:03:15You're a blessed marvel.
00:03:16I'll wash the nappies and turn down your beds.
00:03:19So all you've got to do is fall into it.
00:03:24Turn down your bed. All you've got to do is fall into it.
00:03:26Hard life running a pub.
00:03:29You know what? I'm not so sure I shouldn't have married you instead of your sister.
00:03:33I said not to her, but given my love when you came again, and the new baby...
00:03:37And my love to your mum and dad and to Anne, you can tell him you saved my life.
00:03:41Nothing. Well, see you tomorrow, same time.
00:03:44I hope so. Sorry you got such a long walk to the bus stop.
00:03:48I don't mind. I quite like it, really.
00:03:50Well, you're in good time for the nine o'clock bus.
00:03:52Bye. Bye. It'll be good.
00:03:54And you.
00:03:59Hello? Oh, hello.
00:04:02Yes, Ron speaking.
00:04:04Yes, mother and child both doing fine.
00:04:07I spoke to the matron about an hour ago and I should have Marjorie back by the weekend.
00:04:12Oh, Jean. She just left.
00:04:14Oh, well, I'm glad she looked after you and didn't drown Timmy in the pub.
00:04:19Yes. Goodbye, dear. Oh, I'll go and see Marjorie tomorrow, dear.
00:04:23Yes. Goodbye.
00:04:27Mummy, do you know how many innocent defenseless foxes
00:04:30are slaughtered every year by angry old men in pink coats?
00:04:33Oh, dear. 12,000.
00:04:35Really?
00:04:37Is that all you can say, Mummy? Just really?
00:04:40Sorry, dear. What else had to I say?
00:04:43Hello, my darlings. Well, the hunter has returned.
00:04:46What's the news of Jean, dear?
00:04:47Oh, she's all right. I've just phoned. She's on her way.
00:04:49Good. Look what I've got.
00:04:52Caught him in Beechwood.
00:04:55Assassin.
00:05:18DOORBELL BUZZES
00:05:31Hello?
00:05:32Hello?
00:05:34Hello.
00:05:35Who is that?
00:05:36Well, what do you want?
00:05:39Who's that?
00:05:40Well, I'm just somebody who's waiting for the bus.
00:05:44Waiting for the bus?
00:05:47Yes. You see, this is a call box.
00:05:49I'm afraid you got through to the phone box.
00:05:51Do you always answer telephones that ring in call boxes?
00:05:54Well, no, but there was nobody here and I...
00:05:58Well, what do you mean? Nobody?
00:06:00You're there?
00:06:02Well, yes, but what I really mean is there was nobody else here.
00:06:06And you see, I was waiting for the bus
00:06:08and the phone box is just by the side of the bus stop.
00:06:11And the phone box rang and I...
00:06:12And you answered?
00:06:14Yes.
00:06:16Were you expecting a call?
00:06:17Me? No. You can't telephone people in call boxes.
00:06:21Why not?
00:06:23Well, how do you know they're going to be there?
00:06:25You could arrange it.
00:06:27Oh, yes, I suppose you could. I hadn't thought of that.
00:06:31I could have arranged to call you while you're waiting for the bus.
00:06:35Well, I don't see how.
00:06:37Why not?
00:06:39You don't know who I am, for one thing.
00:06:41So tell me.
00:06:43I've told you. I'm just somebody who's waiting for the bus.
00:06:47Do you always wait there for the bus? Every evening?
00:06:50Oh, no. Only this week while I'm...
00:06:54You don't know me, do you?
00:06:56No. But tell me.
00:06:59Tell me who you are.
00:07:01And tell me what you're doing there, waiting for the bus.
00:07:04Who... Who are you?
00:07:06You haven't told me who you are yet.
00:07:09Oh, look, I'm sorry, but I've got to go now. My bus is coming.
00:07:12Go here for a minute.
00:07:14I thought I'd dialed 9275. What is your number?
00:07:17Oh, it's 9724, but I must go now.
00:07:21Will you be here tomorrow night?
00:07:22Oh, look, I'm sorry, but I've got to go now.
00:07:25Goodbye. Goodbye. Tomorrow.
00:07:39Goodbye.
00:07:54Molly, could you help me to decide about something?
00:07:57What, dear?
00:07:59Well, just supposing you'd met someone,
00:08:02someone you hadn't really met at all,
00:08:03and he wanted to meet you again tomorrow evening at the same time.
00:08:06What would you do?
00:08:08You've just met someone that you haven't met.
00:08:10It's perfectly possible. It just happened to me.
00:08:13It's jolly exciting.
00:08:14Isn't it about time you got somebody to introduce you?
00:08:17No, I can't, you see, because he won't be there.
00:08:20Do you want to know what I'd do if I was you, Jean?
00:08:22Go on, what?
00:08:23I'd go and have my brains tested, just in case.
00:08:26Oh, Molly, you're not even trying to help.
00:08:28You've got no imagination at all.
00:08:29Oh, that's what I mean. I'm all right.
00:08:33You give me the creeps.
00:08:34Creeps, dear? Why?
00:08:36Sitting there, polishing up that murder weapon
00:08:38all ready for the next victim.
00:08:39Now, come on, we must get this straight.
00:08:41If it's wrong to kill animals, it's wrong to eat them.
00:08:45And I saw you going for that chicken tonight like an angry rat.
00:08:48That chicken, Daddy, wasn't killed for pleasure.
00:08:50Well, then it shouldn't have been eaten for pleasure.
00:08:52You're impossible to argue with, and utterly heartless.
00:08:55That poor hair you shot.
00:08:57Do you realise it could have been your own grandmother?
00:08:59When did you become a Buddhist?
00:09:01On Monday.
00:09:02Really?
00:09:03Oh, don't.
00:09:04Don't.
00:09:05Ann became a Buddhist last Monday.
00:09:08Oh, that makes a nice change from last week's Dan the Bomb campaign.
00:09:12Now you're sneering at my religion.
00:09:14God forbid.
00:09:15Oh, Buddha forbid, you mean.
00:09:16And you're a coward too, Daddy. You're getting off the subject.
00:09:19Am I? Which one?
00:09:20You know perfectly well. Blood sports.
00:09:23Oh, I'm sorry. I thought we were still on Buddhism.
00:09:25Now, don't lecture me about blood sports. I'm far too far gone.
00:09:29Why not write to the papers about it? Work it off that way.
00:09:32That's a very good idea. A letter to the local master of foxhounds.
00:09:35Do you know? I've half a mind to.
00:09:38What's his name?
00:09:39Wildblood. Lord Wildblood.
00:09:41Chippy call. I'm going upstairs to write now.
00:09:45Do you mind if I don't kiss you goodnight, Daddy?
00:09:47Not at all, darling. But why?
00:09:49In my present mood, I don't want to risk any emotional distress.
00:09:52I'm not going to kiss you.
00:09:53In my present mood, I don't want to risk any emotional conflict.
00:09:56It might weaken my case.
00:09:58Of course. I quite understand. Goodnight, darling.
00:10:00And please don't think that endearments will soften me.
00:10:02I'm sorry. Goodnight, dear.
00:10:04Oh, dear. I nearly forgot.
00:10:08Goodnight. I hope you both sleep.
00:10:14So much for us.
00:10:16What time did Ron say Jean should be back?
00:10:17Just before ten.
00:10:18Is that now?
00:10:19Oh, do stop fussing, dear. She'll be home at any minute.
00:10:23No, I do fuss about the children,
00:10:24but every time you open a paper, there's some new case.
00:10:28Jean's all right. She's got sense.
00:10:32So have they all, in their own opinion.
00:10:34Well, I wanted to have Timmy here. It wouldn't have been any trouble.
00:10:37I can't understand why you didn't insist.
00:10:39And get called an interfering parent. No, thank you.
00:10:44It's walking down that lane alone I don't like.
00:10:47There may be some maniac in the bar
00:10:49who sees her leave by herself, follows her,
00:10:51and frightens the life out of her.
00:10:53You know, if everyone thought as you do,
00:10:56nobody would ever dare go out of the house.
00:10:59Yes. Yes, that's true.
00:11:01I still think it's a risk letting her come home alone.
00:11:04A small one, but it's a risk.
00:11:07Well, you can stop worrying, dear, because she's here now.
00:11:11Hello. Hello, darling.
00:11:12Well, here I am, lying drunk and stinking like a furry.
00:11:16It was great fun.
00:11:17With the bus on time, you didn't have to wait for it.
00:11:19Oh, only a few minutes.
00:11:21I can't understand why Ron doesn't see you to the bus stop.
00:11:24Oh, honestly, Daddy, how can you possibly expect Ron
00:11:28to lead the customers to help themselves?
00:11:30After all, he's entirely on his own.
00:11:32And anyway, I've surely reached the age
00:11:33when I'm perfectly capable of looking after myself.
00:11:36Have you? Are you sure?
00:11:38Well, if I haven't, I must be a mentally defective freak,
00:11:41because all the other girls of my age must certainly have.
00:11:44Meaning that the other parents are in step
00:11:46and that I'm the mentally defective freak.
00:11:49Well, Daddy, you must admit in your less guarded moments,
00:11:52you are just a teeny-weeny bit of an old fusspot.
00:11:54All right, all right.
00:11:56But now, promise me one thing.
00:11:58I know. Don't go talking to any strange men
00:12:01and never accept a lift in a car from a stranger.
00:12:03That's exactly what I was going to say.
00:12:06Why are you smiling at me?
00:12:08Well, Daddy, I can quite honestly assure you
00:12:11I haven't seen a single strange man all day.
00:12:13Good. Now, pop off to bed. Go on.
00:12:16Good night, my ancient, anxious parents.
00:12:17And not so much of the ancient.
00:12:19In wisdom only, of course.
00:12:21Night, Mummy. Good night, darling.
00:12:23Sleep well. And you.
00:12:33Gosh, you're in bed early. In the doghouse with Daddy?
00:12:36No, as it happens, he's in the doghouse with me, Butcher.
00:12:39How did you get on at Ron's? Lovely takings.
00:12:41Well, I wasn't invited to make an appearance.
00:12:44How's your finger? Better.
00:12:45You mean you didn't pull a beer?
00:12:47Well, according to the very ancient and senseless laws of this land,
00:12:50I'm not considered old enough.
00:12:51But I had a go before opening time. Gorgeous.
00:12:54You want to know, it was jolly heavy and sticky.
00:12:56Anyone climb in the bath? No.
00:12:58But there were men, weren't there? Yes, a few old corpses.
00:13:01How far gone? About 40 or so.
00:13:03Oh.
00:13:05As a matter of fact, though,
00:13:07something rather interesting did happen.
00:13:09What?
00:13:11Well, it was while I was waiting for the bus.
00:13:13It was rather funny. Your doors fell off.
00:13:15Not comedy, drama.
00:13:17But you said it was funny.
00:13:19Well, it was, but in a different way.
00:13:22You know the bus stop at the bottom of Harper's Lane?
00:13:24Yes. Well, I got there a bit early,
00:13:27and there was no-one else about.
00:13:29And, well, you know there's a phone box in the corner?
00:13:31Yes. Well, the phone rang.
00:13:34What's odd about that? That's what it's supposed to do, isn't it?
00:13:37Well, not if there's no-one there.
00:13:38But you were. That's the point.
00:13:41So after a while, I answered it.
00:13:43Who was it?
00:13:45A man.
00:13:46That's better. Things are hotting up.
00:13:48Why was he ringing?
00:13:50Oh, I never discovered.
00:13:52What did he say, then?
00:13:55I can't remember now. That's a lot of help.
00:13:58I can only remember his voice.
00:14:01It was sort of as if...
00:14:03Well, just as if he'd really rung up to speak to me.
00:14:06Perhaps he had?
00:14:08Don't be silly. He didn't know I was going to answer.
00:14:11He was a complete stranger.
00:14:13Steady. Watch it.
00:14:15Oh, be an idiot. He just happened to have got the wrong number
00:14:18and I was standing there, so I answered.
00:14:21How old did he sound?
00:14:22Oh, 25 or 26.
00:14:24What else does the crystal ball tell you? Good-looking?
00:14:28With that voice, I should say.
00:14:30How tall?
00:14:32Well, I'm sure we fit.
00:14:34What sort of hair?
00:14:35Erm, clips.
00:14:37Clothes?
00:14:39Erm, Sinatra.
00:14:41Car?
00:14:42E-type, Jack.
00:14:43WHISTLES
00:14:45Not bad. I wonder if he'll ring again tomorrow night.
00:14:49I said, I wonder if he'll ring again tomorrow night.
00:14:51Oh, don't be silly. Why? I bet he will.
00:14:54I shan't answer.
00:14:56Anyway, he won't even remember the number.
00:14:59So you told him the number?
00:15:01Oh, he'd have to have known the number to rung in the first place.
00:15:04Did you tell him you'd be there again tomorrow night?
00:15:06Of course not.
00:15:08Are you sure?
00:15:09Well, not in so many words.
00:15:12Oh! Now what?
00:15:14You! Not in so many words.
00:15:16I bet he does ring again tomorrow night.
00:15:20I bet he doesn't.
00:15:42WHISTLES
00:15:47PHONE RINGS
00:15:55Hello. Hello.
00:15:57I wondered if you'd be there.
00:15:59Did you? Well, of course.
00:16:01And if you were there, whether you'd answer.
00:16:03Well, I did, didn't I?
00:16:05Are you waiting for the bus?
00:16:07Yes. Yes, I am.
00:16:09I hope I didn't make you miss it last night.
00:16:12No, I caught it, thank you.
00:16:15I hope there's nobody else there waiting to use the call box or anything.
00:16:20Oh, no. There's no-one here at all.
00:16:22No-one but us. Just us two.
00:16:26That's right.
00:16:28Just us two.
00:16:30And the people in the houses.
00:16:32What houses?
00:16:34There aren't any houses near here.
00:16:36No houses. No people at all.
00:16:38No.
00:16:40There's a road and a lane and trees and things.
00:16:45That's nice.
00:16:47It makes it seem intimate.
00:16:49As if it all belonged to us.
00:16:51Just you and me.
00:16:55Don't you know where it is, then?
00:16:57How could I? But you know the number.
00:16:59Oh, I dialed a number last night and...
00:17:01Ah, and you got the wrong one.
00:17:03The wrong one?
00:17:05How could it have been the wrong one when you answered it?
00:17:09I don't know where you are or who you are.
00:17:13But I know something else.
00:17:15What?
00:17:17I wish I did know you.
00:17:19What's your name?
00:17:22Oh, please tell me.
00:17:24I've been thinking about you ever since I heard your voice last night.
00:17:27Have you? Honestly?
00:17:29Yes. Honestly.
00:17:31Please tell me your name.
00:17:35It's Samantha.
00:17:37Samantha.
00:17:39Samantha.
00:17:41Samantha. It suits you.
00:17:43It really is just you.
00:17:47It's... It's romantic and exciting.
00:17:50Like your voice.
00:17:53Has anyone ever told you that you've got the most...
00:17:57No.
00:17:59No, I won't say that.
00:18:01Go on.
00:18:03No, I won't say that. It sounds too...
00:18:05Too... Too what?
00:18:07Well, I was going to say...
00:18:10sexy.
00:18:12But that's not right.
00:18:14That's not at all what I...
00:18:16What I really mean, Samantha.
00:18:18Oh, what do you really mean, then?
00:18:20How can I explain?
00:18:23You sound terribly...
00:18:25intriguing.
00:18:27Tantalising.
00:18:29Samantha.
00:18:31And...
00:18:33And you can tell all that from my voice.
00:18:36Do I give myself away so badly?
00:18:38I'd rather answer that tomorrow.
00:18:40Tomorrow?
00:18:42Aren't you going to be there tomorrow?
00:18:44Oh, yes.
00:18:46At the same time?
00:18:48Yes, but perhaps just a bit earlier.
00:18:51Can I ring you again then, Samantha?
00:18:53Yes.
00:18:55If you like.
00:18:57Samantha.
00:18:59Yes?
00:19:01What about your boyfriend?
00:19:03Oh, I haven't got a boyfriend.
00:19:05I bet you've got a girlfriend, though.
00:19:07Did you, um...
00:19:09Did you tell her about us last night, talking?
00:19:11No.
00:19:14I bet you told somebody.
00:19:16Why, are you so sure?
00:19:18Samantha.
00:19:20Yes?
00:19:22Don't tell anybody.
00:19:24Why don't you want me to?
00:19:26Well, because I want it to be something between us and nobody else.
00:19:29I don't want you to share me with your girlfriends,
00:19:31just like I wouldn't talk about you.
00:19:33Can you understand that?
00:19:35Yes.
00:19:37Yes.
00:19:39I think I can.
00:19:42I'll ring you tomorrow then, Samantha.
00:19:44Goodbye for now.
00:19:46Tomorrow?
00:19:48Goodbye.
00:19:50Till tomorrow.
00:19:55Intriguing.
00:19:58Tantalizing.
00:20:01Samantha.
00:20:27Oh, Molly, it's a marvellous feeling
00:20:29when you know you can rely on a man.
00:20:31That'll be the day.
00:20:33Well, he said he'd phone, and he did, on the dot.
00:20:35Oh, you're not on about him again.
00:20:37And now I shouldn't be, really.
00:20:40He asked me to keep it to myself.
00:20:42I've got to tell someone.
00:20:44Then you have to pick on me.
00:20:46Oh, poor Molly. If only you had a man your life,
00:20:48you'd understand it.
00:20:50You don't have to poor Molly me.
00:20:52What's eating you? That's what I'd like to know.
00:20:54Love, I think.
00:20:56Oh, my God.
00:20:59Dear sir, I enclose an open letter
00:21:01to the master of the Broadvale Foxhounds,
00:21:03which I hope you will have the courage and integrity
00:21:05to print in your newspaper.
00:21:07Yours, et cetera, Anne Painter.
00:21:09That's very good, yes. I like that et cetera, et cetera.
00:21:11But it is very professional.
00:21:13To Lord Wildblood, M.F.H.
00:21:15Now, wait a minute.
00:21:17We must be correct.
00:21:19You address it to the right honourable,
00:21:22the Viscount Wildblood, M.F.H.
00:21:24Right honourable and a master of foxhounds?
00:21:26I'm awfully sorry, dear, but that's correct.
00:21:28You see, don't go on.
00:21:30Dear sir... No, no, wait a minute.
00:21:32You start, my lord.
00:21:34All right, my lord, then.
00:21:36As a member of the junior lodge of the Anti-Blood Sports League,
00:21:40I wish to draw your attention to the fact
00:21:42that every year 12,000 foxes are exhausted, terrified,
00:21:46then brutally murdered for pleasure
00:21:48by people who find enjoyment in causing pain to dumb creatures
00:21:51by hunting them.
00:21:53These people are just sadists
00:21:55who are not intelligent enough
00:21:57to find better ways of using their spare time.
00:22:00But you can't say that.
00:22:02You'll be heard up for libel.
00:22:04Oh, can't I? My fellow members and me...
00:22:06My fellow members and I, dear.
00:22:08My fellow members and I are surprised
00:22:10that you do not bring back bear-baiting,
00:22:12cock-fighting and public executions.
00:22:14But you can't put your name to that.
00:22:16Why, it's my name. Come on.
00:22:18Here, give me that letter.
00:22:20Now, come along. Give it to me.
00:22:22See? Even you can't take it.
00:22:25Like all sportsmen, lack of moral fibre.
00:22:27I think I'll have a drink before I do something violent.
00:22:30Yes, that's right. Don't you?
00:22:33Hello, dear.
00:22:35Hello, Mother.
00:22:37Mother? You suddenly make me feel years older.
00:22:40Oh, that's how I feel tonight.
00:22:42Suddenly. Years older.
00:22:44Oh, dear.
00:22:47It's as if I say goodbye to my childhood.
00:22:49Like it says in the Bible.
00:22:51I put away childish things.
00:22:54I put away childish things.
00:22:56Are you feeling all right, dear?
00:22:58Mmm, wonderful.
00:23:00I'm throbbing and pulsating with new life.
00:23:03I can actually feel it.
00:23:05I'm not altogether sure that I haven't been sort of reborn.
00:23:09Good heavens above.
00:23:11You must be in love.
00:23:13Who did you meet at rounds today?
00:23:15How sordid of you, Mother.
00:23:17This is nothing physical.
00:23:19It's on an entirely different level.
00:23:22Now, look, Jean.
00:23:24Samantha.
00:23:26Samantha? Oh, you've had a second christening, have you?
00:23:29We've all changed his name.
00:23:31Don't you think you'd better go to bed, dear?
00:23:34Get some sleep.
00:23:36Yes. To sleep.
00:23:38To dream of another day.
00:23:40Tomorrow.
00:23:42Jean?
00:23:44Samantha.
00:23:46What has got into you?
00:23:49There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
00:23:52than I've dreamt of in our philosophy.
00:23:54Am I in the wrong house?
00:23:56Oh, dear. Is she all right?
00:23:59No, I don't think she is.
00:24:01You haven't been drinking at rounds, have you, Jean?
00:24:03Samantha.
00:24:05Certainly not.
00:24:07Well, then, what's the matter with you?
00:24:09I don't know what you mean, Father.
00:24:11Father?
00:24:13Yes, I'm Mother, and she is Samantha.
00:24:15Darling Father. Hmm?
00:24:17I don't think you'd ever understand.
00:24:19Why? Never, never.
00:24:21Perhaps 30 years ago.
00:24:23But I doubt it even then.
00:24:30Good night, Mother.
00:24:34Good night, Father.
00:24:36Mother? Father?
00:24:38Oh, dear.
00:24:40You've got two half-wits in the family.
00:24:42Whose side does it come from, yours or mine?
00:24:44Nothing.
00:24:47It's just a part of growing up.
00:24:49Into what, may I ask?
00:24:53Well?
00:24:57Well, did he phone?
00:24:59Oh, come on, Jean. You know I'm dying to hear.
00:25:02I stayed awake specially.
00:25:04Please don't be mean. Tell me.
00:25:07No. I don't want to soil it.
00:25:10Soil it? Whatever do you mean?
00:25:12Cheapen it.
00:25:14Pass it around.
00:25:16Allow it to become second-hand and dog-eared.
00:25:19I promised.
00:25:21Sounds red-hot to me. What did he say?
00:25:23He said...
00:25:26And I can't tell you another word.
00:25:29He said...
00:25:31Hello.
00:25:33Now you've really got me. Hello.
00:25:35I shall dance all night. I shall never get to sleep.
00:25:37I don't expect I shall either.
00:25:39What else did he say? He must have said something.
00:25:43Look, Jean, this isn't fair.
00:25:45I never keep things from you.
00:25:47You've never had anything like this to keep.
00:25:49And so I should hope by the sound of it.
00:25:51Have you told Daddy?
00:25:53So intimate and exciting, like your voice, Samantha.
00:25:59What?
00:26:01Romantic and exciting, Samantha.
00:26:05I could hit you. I honestly could.
00:26:08Tell tomorrow.
00:26:10I'll ring you tomorrow.
00:26:15I'll ring you tomorrow.
00:26:37Timmy, you would choose the night, wouldn't you?
00:26:39What are you talking about?
00:26:41Come on. No, no.
00:26:43No.
00:26:45No, come on.
00:26:47No.
00:26:49I'm not staying for any nonsense tonight.
00:27:14Night, Ron. I'm just going.
00:27:16All right. Jean, just before you go,
00:27:18get me 200 seniors, will you? There's an angel.
00:27:20I'm tipping a new barrel and I can't get away.
00:27:22Look, Ron, I'll miss my bus.
00:27:25Your watch must be fast. Loads of time.
00:27:27Oh.
00:27:31Where's the key?
00:27:33The what? The key.
00:27:35It's behind that big brass plate.
00:27:37Oh, it's not, Ron.
00:27:39Are you sure? Yes, positive.
00:27:41Oh, I know. It's in that brass pot.
00:27:43I put it there last night.
00:27:45Got it?
00:27:47Oh, just a minute. Oh, I've got it.
00:27:49Yes.
00:27:56Catch. Thanks.
00:27:58Oh, Jean, hang on a second.
00:28:00I nearly forgot the library books.
00:28:02Look, Ron, I'm really going to miss this bus now.
00:28:04Yeah, you will.
00:28:10Look, please hurry.
00:28:13Oh, look, Ron, really, do you have to have them?
00:28:15Look, don't. What's all the fuss about?
00:28:17You know, your bags are dying.
00:28:20I've got one. Hang on.
00:28:22Are you sure there's not one down there on that sideboard?
00:28:24Where?
00:28:26Oh, where the brass pot was. No, there's nothing here.
00:28:28Ah, got it.
00:28:30That's it.
00:28:32Look, Ron, please hurry.
00:28:34All right. Coming.
00:28:36Coming. Your bags are dying.
00:28:42That's a very good book, this. I can thoroughly recommend it.
00:28:46Now, be a good girl, will you, and change those for me.
00:28:48Get me something nice and light. I'm going into the rain.
00:28:50Do you have a sort of thing? I have.
00:28:52Oh, and remind your dad that I'm nearly out of eggs.
00:28:54And also, I want some more butter.
00:29:43Hello, dear. Good morning.
00:29:45Look, Molly, I've said to go back. I've left my purse at the checkers.
00:29:49That's all right. Jump in. I'll trust you.
00:29:51I'd rather go back, really.
00:29:53The next one's not for an hour, you know.
00:29:55I know.
00:30:13Oh, please, make him proud.
00:30:31Oh, goodness. What are you doing, dear?
00:30:33I'm only waiting.
00:30:35Oh, dear.
00:30:37Oh, dear.
00:30:39Oh, dear.
00:30:41I'm only waiting.
00:30:43What, you don't want to make a call? No.
00:30:46Well, then, if you'll excuse me, am I making one?
00:30:48Because I've had a puncture, so I'm going to be a bit late.
00:30:51You missed the bus, you know. Yes, I know.
00:30:55Oh, dear, I hadn't heard a penny.
00:30:57I wondered you could change sixpence for me, could you?
00:30:59Yes, I'd expect so.
00:31:01No, no, no, it's all right. I knew I had four pennies somewhere.
00:31:08Hello? No, no, don't press button A.
00:31:10You're through to a call box. You've got the wrong number.
00:31:14We don't want to waste your pennies, do we?
00:31:31Hello? Just to say I'll be a bit late.
00:31:33Yes, I had a measly puncture. No, shan't be long.
00:31:36OK.
00:31:40You know the next bus doesn't come till another hour, dear.
00:31:42Yes, I know. Well, what are you going to do?
00:31:44I shall wait for it.
00:31:46But you can't be here all alone. It'll be dark soon.
00:31:48I don't mind. I never heard such nonsense.
00:31:51I shall see you along to the Chequers, and you can wait there.
00:31:53No, please, I'd much rather wait here.
00:31:55I never heard such nonsense in all my life.
00:31:57What would one say if I let you stay here?
00:31:59Now, come along. I'm not going to have you stay all alone in the dark for another hour.
00:32:02Never mind. Don't you worry about missing the bus. Anyone can do that.
00:32:06It's always go-slow business.
00:32:08You'll never know where you are with the buses.
00:32:10They're either here or there or gone or anywhere.
00:32:12Now, come along, dear. Hurry now.
00:32:14It's late, too. Come on.
00:32:29Oh, hello, Ron.
00:32:31What happened? Don't tell me there was a bus strike.
00:32:34No, I just missed it.
00:32:36What did you do, stop for a kip on the way?
00:32:38I just missed it.
00:32:40Well, I can't be helped. I'd better ring him up and tell him you're here.
00:32:43Then your dad can come and collect you.
00:32:45No, don't do that. I can catch the next one.
00:32:47You're going to get me shot. You don't have kittens if you're not home by ten.
00:32:50Daddy, be furious. You know how he hates getting the car out at night.
00:32:54Don't worry. We'll blame it all on Timmy.
00:33:00I'm awfully sorry, Daddy.
00:33:02Now, don't say another word about it.
00:33:04I'm so glad you had the sense to go back to Ron's and phone me.
00:33:08Now, come along. Cheer up. We'll go.
00:33:10You see, the bus was...
00:33:12Oh, hang the old bus. I didn't mind turning up.
00:33:15In fact, I'm quite enjoying myself.
00:33:24What is the trouble, Jeannie?
00:33:28I want to tell you. Really, I do, but...
00:33:31I know. I know.
00:33:34Things seem terribly big and important when you're young.
00:33:37It's one of the consolations of growing old.
00:33:39You don't have to worry so much.
00:33:42Believe me, darling, tomorrow everything in the garden will be wonderful.
00:33:47I do hope so.
00:33:49Of course it will. You mustn't take things so seriously.
00:34:04DOORBELL RINGS
00:34:18Hello. Is that you, Samantha?
00:34:20Yes, it's me.
00:34:22What happened to you last night?
00:34:25Oh, I was waiting for you to phone. I missed my bus.
00:34:29Were you alone? Yes.
00:34:31I don't think you're telling the truth, Samantha.
00:34:34Oh, yes, honestly.
00:34:36There was someone with you. A woman.
00:34:38Oh, her. Mrs Mason.
00:34:40But she wasn't with me. She just came as you rang.
00:34:43Oh, look, I'm awfully sorry, but it really wasn't my fault.
00:34:51Hello? Hello?
00:34:54Are you still there?
00:34:56I rang again a few minutes later.
00:34:58If you had missed the bus, you'd still have been there to answer.
00:35:02I wanted to wait, but she wouldn't let me.
00:35:05Oh, please. Please, don't be angry.
00:35:08Well, I was disappointed, Samantha. Naturally.
00:35:14But I couldn't help it. Really, I couldn't.
00:35:17You must believe me.
00:35:19DOORBELL RINGS
00:35:21Hello? Hello?
00:35:32DOORBELL RINGS
00:36:03DOORBELL RINGS
00:36:05Hello?
00:36:10Nice evening.
00:36:12Yes. Have you, um, finished with the phone?
00:36:15It's out of order.
00:36:17Oh, how maddening of it.
00:36:19I'll tell you what, let me have a try. I'm lucky at most things.
00:36:22I told you, it's no good. It's out of order.
00:36:24Well, I could give you a lift into Bilhurst. You could phone from there.
00:36:27No, thanks. Don't you want to make a call?
00:36:29It doesn't matter any more.
00:36:32You're not very friendly, are you?
00:36:34No. You don't really want to make a phone call, do you?
00:36:37No.
00:36:39It's all your fault you shouldn't be so attractive.
00:36:42Ah, well, it's not my lucky day.
00:36:52You sure you don't want to change your mind?
00:36:54I wish you'd go away.
00:37:00DOORBELL RINGS
00:37:05Hello.
00:37:08Hello, Samantha. We were cut off.
00:37:10Oh, I'm so glad you've come back.
00:37:12What's the matter? You sound all breathless.
00:37:14Oh, there was a man.
00:37:16What man?
00:37:18Oh, just now, while I was waiting.
00:37:20Were you frightened?
00:37:22No, not really.
00:37:24I can't tell you how glad I am to hear your voice again.
00:37:27I like your saying that, Samantha.
00:37:29Who warned that man?
00:37:31Oh, he said he wanted to use the phone.
00:37:33But I told him it was out of order.
00:37:35That was clever of you.
00:37:38Has he gone now?
00:37:40Yes, in a car.
00:37:42So now you're all on your own again?
00:37:44That's right.
00:37:46All alone, at the end of a lane.
00:37:48Which lane, Samantha?
00:37:50Harper's Lane. The one that leads into Hawkswood Lane.
00:37:53Poor darling, Samantha.
00:37:55Why poor?
00:37:58Well, I don't like to think of you all on your own in that lonely lane,
00:38:02being talked to by strange men.
00:38:04I don't mind.
00:38:06Not now I'm talking to you.
00:38:08You're adorable, Samantha.
00:38:13Isn't it strange?
00:38:15What?
00:38:17Well, we could pass each other in broad daylight
00:38:19and we shouldn't know each other.
00:38:21But if you spoke, I should know you at once, Samantha.
00:38:24By your voice.
00:38:26I love your voice.
00:38:28But you know that.
00:38:32I love yours.
00:38:34Too.
00:38:36Do you?
00:38:38Isn't it time we met, Samantha?
00:38:40What about tomorrow night?
00:38:42Tomorrow night?
00:38:44Yes. Will you be catching the same bus?
00:38:46Well, yes.
00:38:48I mean, no.
00:38:51What do you mean?
00:38:53Well, I should be catching the bus at ten, an hour later.
00:38:55Well, that's all the better.
00:38:57I'll meet you outside the call box at ten to ten tomorrow.
00:38:59Please.
00:39:01Oh, please.
00:39:03Samantha?
00:39:06All right.
00:39:08Wonderful.
00:39:10At the bus stop at the end of Harper's Lane.
00:39:12But you don't know where it is.
00:39:14Oh, yes, I do. I'll be there at ten to ten.
00:39:16And, strictly, no telling your girlfriends.
00:39:19No.
00:39:21No telling.
00:39:23I'm counting every second.
00:39:25Will you?
00:39:28So shall I.
00:39:30And, Samantha?
00:39:32Yes?
00:39:34Don't talk to any more strange men.
00:39:36Will you promise?
00:39:38Good night, Samantha.
00:39:40I'll see you.
00:39:42Tomorrow.
00:39:47Tomorrow.
00:39:53Good night.
00:40:24Molly, do you know what happened to me?
00:40:26I'd never guess.
00:40:28Well, I was nearly proposed to and picked up
00:40:30all in the space of one minute.
00:40:32Well, at least he was doing his best to make an honest woman of you.
00:40:35Oh, it wasn't one man. It was two.
00:40:37You do collect them, don't you?
00:40:39I know, and it's a terrible strain on the nervous system.
00:40:41I'm still shaking.
00:40:43And you need shaking, if you ask me.
00:40:45There must be some funny goings-on up at the checkers.
00:40:47Oh, it wasn't in the checkers. It was in the phone box.
00:40:49Two men, did you say?
00:40:51All three of you in a public call box.
00:40:53What?
00:40:55Next.
00:40:57Only one man. The other one, my one, he wasn't there.
00:40:59You know, if ever there was a proper nutcase, it's you, dear.
00:41:02And can I have the fare, please?
00:41:04If you've forgotten your purse again
00:41:06and all the excitement of the chase.
00:41:12Mummy?
00:41:14There's a dance in Amesley tomorrow night.
00:41:16Is there?
00:41:18Can I go? All the junior branches of the league are going.
00:41:20I'll have to ask Daddy first.
00:41:24Daddy?
00:41:26I say, I say, this is an unusual show of affection.
00:41:28Still, I'm glad we're on speaking terms again.
00:41:30I want to ask you something.
00:41:32Ah, yes, I thought there was a catch in it.
00:41:34There's a dance in Amesley tomorrow night.
00:41:37Is there? Yes, there is. Can I go?
00:41:39No, dear. But why not?
00:41:41Because I say no, dear.
00:41:43But it's a teenage dance, and I'm 14.
00:41:45Other girls of 14 are going.
00:41:47I've said no, and I mean no.
00:41:49It's the only tune you can play.
00:41:51No, no, no, no, no!
00:41:58Yes, I suppose you think I'm a bit hard on her.
00:42:00Well, yes, I do, anyway.
00:42:02Well, look at this.
00:42:04Another young girl murdered,
00:42:06and I'm 10 miles from here.
00:42:08Oh, no.
00:42:10Oh.
00:42:12Terrifying.
00:42:14They haven't caught him yet.
00:42:16Oh.
00:42:18Look, let me have that paper.
00:42:20I don't want the girls reading it and getting frightened.
00:42:23Well, it might be a good thing.
00:42:25No, dear. No, I don't think so.
00:42:29You've got me worried about Jean now.
00:42:32What's the time?
00:42:34She ought to be home by now.
00:42:48Hello.
00:42:50Hello, darling.
00:42:53Oh, a bit late.
00:42:55Yes, the bus was late, about five minutes.
00:42:57Hello, Daddy.
00:42:59Hi, my darling. Everything all right now?
00:43:01Oh, wonderful.
00:43:03There you are. I told you so.
00:43:05And you're right, but then you always are.
00:43:07Timmy all right?
00:43:09Oh, just as naughty as ever.
00:43:11Did you remember the pie dish?
00:43:13What dish?
00:43:15The one you took the pies in, silly.
00:43:17It's my memory. I just can't trust it anymore.
00:43:20Well, that's all my pie dishes at Ron's.
00:43:22We're not made of pie dishes, you know.
00:43:24Oh, Daddy, it's so sad.
00:43:26It's too bad. It's so sad.
00:43:28We're just not made of pie dishes.
00:43:30I'll bring you back tomorrow night, Mummy.
00:43:32No, you can't, darling. You're not going tomorrow.
00:43:34Not going?
00:43:36But you promised.
00:43:38And you told Ron I could even stay later.
00:43:40Well, dear, I've changed my mind.
00:43:42But you can't.
00:43:44What's going on at Ron's?
00:43:47What's going on at Ron's?
00:43:49Nothing.
00:43:51Well, why all the fuss?
00:43:53But it's Saturday night, and he really needs me, Daddy.
00:43:56Listen, I've talked to Ron on the telephone,
00:43:59and I've told him that you're not going tomorrow night.
00:44:02Oh, could you?
00:44:04Darling, why are you so upset?
00:44:07What is going on?
00:44:09Oh!
00:44:15I sure knew what was the matter. There's something.
00:44:19Don't say she's fallen in love with Ron.
00:44:21Oh, don't be absurd, dear.
00:44:23Oh, dear, at their age, they'll fall in love with anyone.
00:44:31What's up?
00:44:33Oh, Father.
00:44:36Oh, him. I've had him in a big way.
00:44:38Here, what did you do with all my make-up?
00:44:40You'll see. And anyway, I only used a bit.
00:44:44Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble.
00:44:47I, Anne Painter, curse you, Edward Painter,
00:44:50for being a mean, lousy old faggot.
00:44:54What's he done to you?
00:44:55Stopped me going to the dance tomorrow night. And you?
00:44:58Oh, he stopped me going to Ron's. Old misery.
00:45:01What do you think's come over him?
00:45:03I don't know. Second childhood, I should think.
00:45:06Well, he's crossed my path for the last time.
00:45:08I hope this works.
00:45:10It should give him sudden and very painful cramps.
00:45:14Here, I've got an idea.
00:45:16What?
00:45:17He can't stop us going to the cinema.
00:45:20He'd better not try.
00:45:21Especially if we say we're going together.
00:45:24What are you cooking?
00:45:26Well, my boyfriend phoned me tonight,
00:45:29and I promised to meet him tomorrow night at ten to ten.
00:45:31And I can't possibly let him down.
00:45:33You mean you're actually going to meet him?
00:45:35Well, only for ten minutes.
00:45:37Where?
00:45:38At the phone box.
00:45:39I think this curse must be working already.
00:45:41Studied through our fit, never mind the cramps.
00:45:43Now, listen. We both leave here in time for the last performance.
00:45:47You go on to the cinema, and then you can tell me the story later.
00:45:49And what are you going to do?
00:45:51Well, I'll catch the bus to Harpers Lane.
00:45:53It gets there about 9.15.
00:45:55And I'll meet you outside the cinema afterwards.
00:45:58Then we can go home together.
00:46:01OK.
00:46:03Now, don't forget, Anne. I'll see you outside after the film.
00:46:07What are you going to do till the bus leaves?
00:46:09Oh, I can have a coffee or something.
00:46:11That means you'll have at least half an hour to wait at Harpers Lane.
00:46:14That's right.
00:46:15So what are you going to do while you're waiting?
00:46:17Oh, I can walk up and down the lane.
00:46:18Walk up and down Harpers Lane?
00:46:20For half an hour? In the dark, all on your own?
00:46:23What else can I do?
00:46:24You're crazy. Someone's sure to see you hanging about,
00:46:27and they're bound to tell Ron, and he's sure to tell Daddy.
00:46:30Oh, no, they won't. Anyway, I can hide.
00:46:32Where?
00:46:33In a field.
00:46:34In a field?
00:46:36Why not?
00:46:37You're going to walk up that creepy lane
00:46:39and hide in a field in your best shoes
00:46:41and wait for a complete stranger?
00:46:44Look, Anne, he's not a complete stranger.
00:46:46In any way, it's all I can do if I'm going to meet him.
00:46:49And don't forget, I'll see you outside after the show.
00:46:51All right?
00:47:00All right.
00:47:20Look, Gene, why don't you change your mind
00:47:23and see the film with me?
00:47:24He's only a voice on the telephone.
00:47:27He might be awful.
00:47:28Don't be so childish, Anne. You're just as bad as Daddy.
00:47:32I hope you'll be all right.
00:47:35See you later. And don't fuss.
00:47:49My word, you're all dressed up for a kill.
00:47:51Ron's throwing a party.
00:47:52I'm not going to Ron's. Harper's Lane, please.
00:47:55If you're not going to Ron's,
00:47:56what on earth do you want to go to Harper's Lane for?
00:47:58I'm meeting my boyfriend there.
00:48:00Oh, no.
00:48:01Not the one you've met but you haven't met. All that nonsense.
00:48:04It isn't nonsense, Molly. I'm meeting him tonight.
00:48:07For the first time?
00:48:08Yes.
00:48:10What do you know about him?
00:48:12Oh, nothing, really. Except he's wonderful.
00:48:16Are you crazy, Gene? He might be anything.
00:48:19Oh, not with a voice like that. You can always tell.
00:48:22My foot.
00:48:23Look, Molly, just because you don't like men...
00:48:25If I was your father, I'd tatter you behind.
00:48:28This so-called boyfriend of yours, what's his name?
00:48:32I don't know.
00:48:33You don't know? What do you know about him, then?
00:48:37I'll tell you all about him on the way back.
00:48:44Did you read the paper this morning?
00:48:47Yes, I read the comic strips.
00:48:49There was a girl your age found strangled in a field.
00:48:53There's always something like that in the papers.
00:48:55How stuffed can you get?
00:48:57If I hadn't got a job to do, I'd take you straight back home.
00:49:01Look, Molly, you don't have to dramatise everything.
00:49:04How do you ever meet anyone if you just stay at home all the time?
00:49:07Gene, I'm warning you for your own good.
00:49:10When you get off at Harper's Lane, you go straight to the Chequers.
00:49:13If it's not too late.
00:50:53Hello, Samantha.
00:50:56I'm sorry to have kept you waiting.
00:50:58I've been trying to get a job for a while.
00:51:01I've got a job for you.
00:51:03I'm afraid I can't.
00:51:05I've got to go.
00:51:06I'll see you later.
00:51:08I'll see you later.
00:51:10Don't go.
00:51:11I don't want you to go.
00:51:13I don't want you to go.
00:51:15I'll see you later.
00:51:17I'll see you later.
00:51:18I'll see you later.
00:51:20I'll see you later.
00:51:22I don't like to think of you all on your own in that lonely lane.
00:51:30You're adorable, Samantha.
00:51:34I love your voice.
00:51:37But you know that.
00:51:43I shall be counting every second.
00:51:46Good night, Samantha.
00:51:48I'll see you tomorrow.
00:51:53Good night.
00:52:05You're not going to walk up that creepy lane and hide in a field.
00:52:09To wait for a complete stranger.
00:52:12Only a voice on the telephone.
00:52:14He might be awful.
00:52:17He might be awful.
00:52:20He might be awful.
00:52:22I hope you'll be all right.
00:52:24I hope you'll be all right.
00:52:27I hope you'll be all right.
00:52:44My word, you're all dressed up for a kill.
00:52:49What do you know about it?
00:52:52Are you crazy, Jean? He might be anything.
00:52:56You don't know. What do you know about it, then?
00:53:01Did you read the paper this morning?
00:53:04There was a girl your age found strangled in a field.
00:53:09Strangled in a field.
00:53:11Strangled in a field.
00:53:22Strangled in a field.
00:53:45Good evening.
00:53:47A large band in soda, please.
00:53:53By the way, may I use your phone?
00:53:55Someone's just gone out to use it.
00:53:57Oh, there's no hurry, just as long as I can get my call in about ten to ten.
00:54:01You've got plenty of time.
00:54:03It is Harper's Lane that runs from here to the bus stop?
00:54:06That's right.
00:54:07I'm staying near here with friends and I just wanted to be sure I was on the right road.
00:54:11A brand-new soda, sir.
00:54:18Jean?
00:54:21Jean?
00:54:27Jean?
00:54:33Jean?
00:54:35Jean?
00:54:37Jean?
00:54:39Jean?
00:54:48Ron?
00:54:50Jean, what on earth are you doing here?
00:54:52Jean, are you all right?
00:54:54Yes. Will you phone Daddy and ask him to come and fetch me?
00:55:01What are you doing here? He said he wasn't going to let you come.
00:55:04Oh, phone Daddy, Ron.
00:55:06You really haven't told me what you're doing here, and he's bound to ask.
00:55:11I'll be such an idiot.
00:55:14I promised to meet a man by the bus stop.
00:55:16He'll be right with you. A man? What man?
00:55:19I don't know. I didn't meet him.
00:55:21Just as well, I should think.
00:55:23I'll take it easy. There's no great harm done.
00:55:26Now, let's think of the best thing to do.
00:55:28There's no point in dragging your father out at this time of night.
00:55:30You could catch the ten o'clock bus.
00:55:32I can't. That man will be there waiting for me.
00:55:35All right, I'll ring your dad.
00:55:37Coming. Look, I've got some customers to attend to.
00:55:40You wait right here. I'll be back.
00:55:42OK?
00:55:51Is the phone free now? Yes, it's all yours.
00:55:54It's very kind of you. I do hope you don't mind. It's only a local call.
00:55:57It's all right with me, but you'll need fourpence. It's a call box.
00:55:59I wonder, in that case, if you'd be kind enough to let me have some change.
00:56:03I know I haven't any confidence. Certainly.
00:56:05Thank you very much.
00:56:33PHONE RINGS
00:57:03Hello?
00:57:05Hello, Samantha. I just wanted to make sure you were there.
00:57:09Don't go away, will you? I'll be right with you.
00:57:11And then we can really meet, Samantha.
00:57:14Won't that be wonderful?
00:57:16I'll be seeing you, Samantha, in just a few minutes.
00:57:20Goodbye.
00:57:26Sorry, were you waiting for the phone?
00:57:29Oh, that's all right, then.
00:57:33PHONE RINGS
00:57:37Ron! Ron!
00:57:39Coming, let me have a sec.
00:57:47Police.
00:57:49Please come quickly...
00:57:51to Harper's Lane.
00:57:53Fill a call box.
00:57:58Now what's the matter? That man. He's going to the bus stop in Harper's Lane.
00:58:01What about it? It's the man I was going to meet.
00:58:04Only there's another girl there now. I've just heard him talking to her.
00:58:07Ron, he might do anything. He might kill her.
00:58:09Now, take it easy. He's just gone to meet a friend.
00:58:11He's not, I tell you. He's gone to get her.
00:58:13Oh, Ron, for heaven's sake!
00:58:16Now, look, he might have arranged to call her, for all you know.
00:58:18He arranged to call me, only I'm not there, and now she's there.
00:58:21And she's in danger instead of me.
00:58:24Oh, Ron, you just don't understand.
00:58:26I'm afraid I don't. Now, look, I've got some thirsty customers in there.
00:58:29I'll attend to them, and then I'll ring your dad. All right?
00:58:40Jeans!
00:58:44Jeans!
00:59:00Oh, God!
00:59:04Ron! Yes?
00:59:06Have you any idea of the number of the call box?
00:59:08I don't know. What phone box? The one in Harper's Lane.
00:59:11I haven't a clue, I'm afraid. It's not the sort of thing you usually remember.
00:59:15Does anyone here know the number? No, no.
00:59:17I can't remember. Never used that box.
00:59:20It's all right. I think I've got it.
00:59:22Five...
00:59:24Six...
00:59:26Seven...
00:59:28Two...
00:59:31Nine...
00:59:53PHONE RINGS
00:59:59Hello?
01:00:01Look, whoever you are, you're in danger.
01:00:04There's a man coming, and he's coming for you.
01:00:06It's you, Jean. This is Anne.
01:00:08Anne! What are you doing there?
01:00:10I came to bring you home. I was frightened about you.
01:00:13Where are you?
01:00:15Anne, please, do as I say and get out of that box as quick as you can.
01:00:18Go and hide somewhere, anywhere, but get out of that box now and once.
01:00:22Do you understand?
01:00:24Put the phone back, Samantha. We won't be needing it any more.
01:00:27I'm not Samantha.
