00:44What's up? How's it going? I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:46And I'm Valerie Ray Miller.
00:48And this is the place where kids come from all over the country
00:50to compete in the same cool games that they see on American Gladiators.
00:54Welcome to Gladiators 2000!
00:57Woo-hoo! Yeah!
00:59All right, let's meet our teams for today.
01:02The blue team, weighing 100 pounds and standing 5 feet tall,
01:06it's Michael Tome!
01:10And at 125 pounds, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall,
01:13Tiffany Sarand!
01:16And coaching the blue team today,
01:18the lovely, intelligent Siren!
01:22And for the red team, weighing 110 pounds,
01:25standing 5 feet 4 inches tall,
01:27it's Jennifer Barber!
01:30And at 100 pounds, standing 5 feet 4 inches tall,
01:33it's Joseph Nietzsche!
01:36And coaching the red team today,
01:38it's Hawk!
01:42These four exceptional young athletes are pumped to go up
01:45against some of the most difficult mental and physical challenges
01:48that they've ever seen.
01:50So, let's kick it.
01:52What are we waiting for?
01:57Our first game is one of my favorites.
01:59We call it Swingshot.
02:00Now, what we do, we take a contender from each team,
02:02put them up on a 12-foot tower,
02:04hook them up to a bungee cord, and let them loose.
02:06The object is to bounce off the ground,
02:08aiming for that pole that's covered in balls,
02:10and you grab as many as you can in 60 seconds,
02:12and then you bring them back to the Gladiator coach.
02:14Now, red balls are worth 5 points, blue balls are worth 3 points,
02:16and the yellow balls are only worth 1 point.
02:18In addition, the total number of balls that each team scores
02:20will determine how many chances they get
02:22to score extra points in our bonus round.
02:24But before we get to the bonus round,
02:26we got a little jumping to do, you know what I'm saying?
02:28Up first, it's Joseph Nietzsche from the red team!
02:34And Michael Toll from the blue team!
02:3760 seconds on the clock, please.
02:39Both teams are ready.
02:40Peggy Odita, let's kick it!
02:44All right, there they go, head-to-head now
02:47for the first grab, Joseph and Michael.
02:49A blue and a yellow. Remember, the blue's worth 3.
02:51Dunk that in the barrel. There's Hawk helping him along.
02:55One point there, the yellow ball.
02:57Siren on top of that tower.
02:59It's like a rubber band.
03:01Worth 5. Good job there by Michael.
03:04Joseph, oh, he's reaching! He didn't quite...
03:06I don't think he made the delivery there.
03:08But that does not stop him. Oh, check Michael out!
03:10Oh, air ball! Didn't get anything there.
03:12Goes back to the tower. Siren helping him along.
03:14Meanwhile, look at the red team going for the spring.
03:16Joseph, he got a yellow one. All right, way to go, guys.
03:18But he can't get back up there to the tower.
03:20Michael got another blue one for another 3 points.
03:22Dunk it in. Siren helping him on top of the tower.
03:24It's like a rubber band. Watch him come down
03:26and then spring back up. The key is to stay in control, though.
03:29Michael is going for red one, and he lost it!
03:31That would have been 5 points. It seems like you're having trouble
03:33holding on to the balls right now.
03:35Here we go now. Blue team going back up.
03:38Makes a swing. Nothing.
03:40Zero there. Here comes Joseph.
03:42Joseph going, makes a spring.
03:44Oh, they can't hold on!
03:46That's the sound of the whistle. Time is up.
03:48They scored a lot right up front, but had trouble towards the end.
03:50Peggy Odita has got the results. Peggy?
03:53The red team collects 2 balls for a total score of 4 points.
03:56The blue team collects 3 balls for a score of 9 points.
04:01We'll be back to see how Tiffany and Jennifer do

06:24Okay, welcome back to Gladiators 2000.
06:26Now it's time for our next event, a race.
06:29But this isn't a race between two contestants
06:31or two gladiators.
06:33We're going to have a race between a penny
06:35and a school book.
06:37Let's meet our contestants.
06:39In this corner, we have a penny made of copper
06:41minted in Denver, Colorado,
06:43boasting a picture of Abraham Lincoln on the front
06:45and weighing one-tenth of an ounce.
06:47And in this corner, we have a science book
06:49made of cardboard and paper.
06:51It's got doodly stuff on the front
06:53and gum between pages 56 and 57.
06:56It weighs two pounds!
06:58All right, you guys at home, take the penny in one hand
07:00and the book in the other hand.
07:02Stand up on a chair.
07:04Now, hold the penny and the book right at the same level.
07:07Okay, get ready to drop your contenders
07:09at the count of three. Here we go.
07:11One, two, three. Drop!
07:14I can't believe it!
07:16The penny tied the school book! This is unbelievable!
07:18I got to see the replay.
07:22It's a tie! Whoa, Nelly!
07:24Can you believe that? Holy cow!
07:27Even though the book weighs 320 times as much as the penny,
07:30they hit the counter at the exact same moment.
07:32And that book looks angry.
07:34I bet he's going to want a rematch.
07:36Well, Old Mr. Science Book can keep racing the penny,
07:39but it's always going to end up a tie.
07:41It may not seem like it should be true, but it is.
07:43According to the great Italian scientist Galileo,
07:46all objects fall at the exact same rate,
07:48no matter how much they weigh.
07:50And he just proved it the same way he did
07:52over 300 years ago.
07:54Now, there's a big if connected to this law, though.
07:57That if takes into account air resistance
08:00that can slow light things down,
08:02like a piece of paper or a feather.
08:04But if there was no air to get in the way,
08:06Galileo said a feather would fall as fast as a hammer.
08:09And Galileo was proved right,
08:11though he had to wait a few centuries.
08:13In the 1970s, astronauts conducted a race
08:15between a feather and a hammer
08:17on the airless surface of the moon.
08:19Guess what happened?
08:22It's a tie!
08:24Whoa, Nellie, can you believe that?
08:26Holy cow, it's unbelievable!
08:28I gotta see that again!
08:30It's amazing!
08:32Unbelievable!
08:36We're back with the second round of Swing Shot.
08:39All right, up top for the red team, it's Jennifer.
08:42And for the blue team, it's Tiffany.
08:44All right, we are set to go. Peggy, let's hit it.
08:47Swing and shot!
08:49Up and down at the same time.
08:51It looks like they're head-to-head right now.
08:53Jennifer also grabbed the blue.
08:55This is gonna be a close match.
08:57Three points for each one of those balls there.
08:59Five points there!
09:01Oh, Jennifer got a red. Tiffany was going for the red.
09:04Oh, she didn't get any.
09:06Here goes Jennifer now with the swoop.
09:08Get that hand out. Nice.
09:10Jennifer has got some grace on this thing.
09:12Went for the blue, took the yellow.
09:14Tiffany got a blue.
09:17Siren helping her back up, dunking it in that tank.
09:19Collected all the balls.
09:21The more they get, the more chances at the bonus round.
09:2325 seconds left.
09:25This will be good for Tiffany, because Tiffany's really
09:27interested in being a sports broadcaster.
09:29Yeah!
09:31Look at that! Two hands there, Jennifer!
09:35They are taking some balls back with them.
09:37Tiffany said she was stoked about this match.
09:39She couldn't wait to go bungee jumping.
09:43Five seconds on the clock.
09:45They're going pretty close here.
09:47Very close.
09:49Oh, Jennifer went for the red.
09:53Peggy's going to do some counting on her fingers.
09:55Let's see what she's got. Miss Odita.
09:57The red team collects seven balls
09:59for a total score of 17 points.
10:01The blue team also collects seven balls
10:03for a total score of 23 points.
10:09Now that our contenders have finished their first game,
10:11it's time to move on to the bonus round.
10:13Our category today is countries and continents.
10:15Now, since the red team is behind, they get to go first,
10:17while the blue team waits in the soundproof booth.
10:19All right, in this container are the seven balls
10:21you scored in Swingshot.
10:23Over there, you've got four barrels,
10:25each with a different continent's name on it.
10:27We have South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.
10:29Val will hand each of you a ball, one at a time.
10:31I'll name a country, and you'll have 30 seconds
10:33to get as many balls as you can into the proper barrel,
10:35scoring five points each time you get a right answer.
10:37You got all that?
10:39Whoo! Well, let's compete.
10:41Ready?
10:45Angola.
10:51Norway.
10:57Libya.
11:03Colombia.
11:05Brazil.
11:11Greece.
11:17Oh, wow!
11:21All right, that's five correct answers
11:23for a total of 25 points.
11:25Now, let's bring out the blue team.
11:27Here they come, pumped and ready.
11:29All right, guys, the subject is countries and continents.
11:31You guys also have seven balls, so let's see what happens.
11:33Ready?
11:35Angola.
11:37There they go.
11:39Remember to tag. Remember to get them to tag you.

12:03Isn't that a song?
12:05Hong Kong. Oh!
12:07Good job. You got four correct answers
12:09for 20 more points.
12:11The blue team may be winning by a score of 43 to 42.
12:15One point. Wow.

15:27Aren't you at a loss for words?
15:29Then come on down to Big Ed's House of Words.
15:32That's right.
15:33Big Ed's House of Words, where Big Ed, that's me,
15:36has got thousands of words for you to use.
15:38And guess what?
15:39I'm practically giving them all away.
15:41Big words like conspiracy.
15:44It's pretty much a form together in an illegal act.
15:46Wow, that's a great word.
15:48Just think, if you've got conspiracy in your vocabulary,
15:52you can make big money movies like Oliver Stone.
15:55And for today only, if you buy conspiracy,
15:58I'll throw it absolutely free of charge.
16:01Naive.
16:02Simple.
16:03Innocent.
16:04Lacking the sense to see through deception.
16:05So don't you be naive.
16:07With Manna White, you can only buy a vowel,
16:09but at Big Ed's, you get the whole word.
16:11So come on down to Big Ed's.
16:13I've got thousands of words, and I'm practically
16:15giving them all away.
16:17Big Ed's House of Words.
16:19Take our word for it.
16:21Yeah!
16:24One of the things that we try to teach here at Gladiators 2000
16:27is the importance of good nutrition.
16:29For our next event, we decided to put our words in action.
16:32It's called the Food Pyramid.
16:34It's 30 feet high.
16:36The Food Pyramid represents the six basic food groups.
16:38We've got grains, fruits, veggies, dairy, protein,
16:41and way up at the top...
16:43My favorite.
16:44Yeah, what we need the least of, fats.
16:46This event is run like a relay race.
16:48The first contender on each team races up to collect
16:50a giant piece of food from one of the groups,
16:52then brings it down to their teammate,
16:54who must race up and grab a piece of food
16:55from a different group.
16:57The teams can earn five points for each different group
16:59that they can grab.
17:01If all six food groups are collected by a team
17:03before time runs out, the first contender to reach
17:05the top of the pyramid and hit the button
17:07will earn 20 bonus points, with 10 bonus points
17:09going to the second team if they reach the top.
17:12Red team, are you ready?
17:14That's what I like to see.
17:15Blue team, are you ready?
17:1790 seconds on the clock, please.
17:19And let's kick it!
17:21Go, blue team! Go, blue team!
17:23All right, red team.
17:25Joseph on his way up with Jennifer.
17:27And on the blue side, Michael and Tiffany
17:29to see what they got in them going up this huge food pyramid.
17:32Whoo!
17:33Red team coming down with the cheese and the milk.
17:35Michael's got a bottle of milk.
17:36And the blue.
17:37All right, there's Jennifer with her hands full
17:39of the big old tomato delivering it to Hawk
17:41down there at the bottom.
17:42And there go Tiffany and Joseph.
17:44Ooh, they're close. Almost a collision there. Whoa!
17:46That was so nice. He let her pass.
17:47Oh, I feel warm and fuzzy inside.
17:49And here he comes with a banana.
17:51The tag, the trade-off.
17:52The carrot now on the way down.
17:54Veggie there. The tag there.
17:55But look how big this thing is.
17:56As a contender, it's hard to see what's left.
17:59Jennifer got, yeah, she got chicken.
18:01Michael goes to the top for the bat.
18:03Jumps down.
18:04Jennifer's down and tags off her partner.
18:06Back up.
18:07Looks like some grains left there, but look at this.
18:09Joseph, it looks like he's going to the top right now too.
18:11Very interesting.
18:14He is.
18:15There's the candy right there.
18:16Up top. Let's see how he gets down.
18:18Tiffany got fifth for her protein category.
18:21Delivers, tags.
18:22Joseph tags.
18:23They're both up.
18:24Look at that.
18:25Boy, that's a long way to go.
18:27Michael captures the grapes and brings them back down.
18:29There's the race to the top.
18:30Hawk coaching him along.
18:32Joseph on his way up.
18:35Red team's coming in.
18:36They've got to hit the buzzer.
18:38They hit it.
18:39Cool.
18:40Now, blue team racing.
18:41Still racing the clock.
18:42Look at Hawk.

20:59Rad!
21:01Hey, pal, you want to pay attention to the road?
21:03Relax, man, I got it.
21:05Look, my man, if your bad driving gets me killed,
21:07you better hope you die, too, or I will haunt you silly.
21:10And I'm not just gonna float over your bed like,
21:12whoo-whoo-whoo.
21:13I'm gonna be making a more annoying noise like,
21:15aah!
21:17And instead of wearing those long white robes,
21:19I think I'll wear something more form-fitting and upsetting.
21:22The other ghosts will look and be like,
21:24wow, we've never seen that before.
21:26Yo, yo, yo, check out this chef, right?
21:28Right?
21:29That's so gay.
21:30That's really gay.
21:31Dude, look at those pants.
21:33Please don't say that.
21:34What?
21:35Don't say that something is gay
21:37when you mean that something is dumb or stupid.
21:39It's insulting.
21:42It's like if I thought this pepper shaker was stupid
21:44and I said, man, this pepper shaker sold 16-year-old boy
21:48with a cheesy mustache.
21:50Just saying.
21:52When you say that's so gay, do you realize what you say?
21:55Knock it off.
21:57The Daily Buzz, weekdays on The CW.
22:08All right, welcome back for the third and final round
22:10of Gladiators 2000, and we have done it again.
22:13Save the best for last.
22:15It's time to play The Eliminator.
22:17Let's take a look and see how The Eliminator is played.
22:19Watch this.
22:21The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
22:23Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings
22:25and our first question board.
22:27To add 25 points to your score, choose the correct answer
22:29by selecting one of the two paths through the treacherous ball pit.
22:32Next, a razor-sharp high-speed turn and a jump down
22:35takes you to the question room for our second question.
22:37A wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time,
22:39but get it right, earn 25 points,
22:41and move on to quickly tag your partner.
22:44Contender number two has to climb over a row of handles
22:47on their way to question number three.
22:49The correct answer here means climbing a direct rope
22:51over our glass wall and then racing up the moving treadmill,
22:55where the final question board awaits our contender.
22:57Answer this question by picking one of two swinging ropes
23:00for a ride through the barrier to the finish line.
23:02The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points,
23:05which should determine who wins today's super-cool prize package.
23:10So now, audience, help me, it's time for the Eliminator!
23:19Since the blue team is behind, they'll face the Eliminator first.
23:23Michael will start the relay race,
23:25and Tiffany will pick it up in the middle
23:27for a final push to the finish line.
23:29All right, Siren and the blue team, you guys are ready at the starting line.
23:31Peggy, you're in place.
23:33Ladies and gentlemen, let's kick it!
23:37All right, there they go now.
23:39They have started going up the ladder.
23:41Michael is speeding up the ladder.
23:43Blue team, Michael's starting.
23:45He's doing the first leg down the slide.
23:47To the rings, the hanging rings.
23:49You notice that motion there. It's a swimming stroke.
23:51Well, it takes a tremendous amount of upper body strength.
23:53What swimming stroke is that? You make the call.
23:55Come on, come on, come on.
23:57The monkey stroke.
23:58No, it's freestyle.
24:00Off to the question number one.
24:02Imaginary characters and events are fiction or nonfiction?
24:05He's thinking about it.
24:07And he chose fiction, which is correct for 25 points.
24:09Look at that. That's a good job.
24:11He skimmed the top. You skim it right over there.
24:13Slip down into the next one.
24:15You got to go into that wire in the middle there.
24:17Go under that wire. Get up.
24:19He's doing a fantastic job at this.
24:21Pulling, pulling. Michael using that up.
24:23Pump it. Come on. I saw him in the gym the other day.
24:25He was pumping. He pulled himself up nicely there.
24:27Going down. And next question.
24:29The next question is, naive means rugged or innocent?
24:31And he chose the correct answer, which is innocent.
24:33Yep. Doors open. Tags Tiffany.
24:35Tiffany with the ponytail. Hits the hurdles.
24:37She does not what I did.
24:39Tiffany has her own little method here to get over these things.
24:41Most people try to jump from mat to mat,
24:43and she's going in between.
24:45Presented somersaults. But here she goes.
24:47Next question, 25 points.
24:49Egypt is in. Asia or Africa?
24:51Hmm, let me think. Takes Africa. That's correct.
24:53Number 25, please.
24:55Pulling herself up and over that clear glass wall.
24:57It's so... You just need finesse for that right there.
24:59Come on.
25:01That in itself could be called the Eliminator.
25:03That right there, it's tough.
25:05You couldn't get over, could you?
25:07Keep pulling. Come on, Tiff. Come on, baby.
25:09Come on, Tiffany.
25:11She's persistent, isn't she?
25:13You've got to have the Iron Tiger in her. She's got it.
25:15Now it's tough. I think they're probably going to let her go around.
25:17After a couple tries, you go around.
25:19The penalty there, lost time.
25:21Now the object of this treadmill is to keep your head up.
25:23Pull those arms. Pull those legs.
25:25Use all that muscle right there. Come on.
25:27Ah! Very difficult.
25:29Some people make it look easy.
25:31She's resting. Here she goes. She's taking her breath. She's going.
25:33You've got to pump those legs. You've got to drive them.
25:35You've got to pump those legs. Drive them, drive them, drive them, drive them to the top.
25:37She makes it to the top.
25:39Last question. Cranium is another word for part of the skull or stomach.
25:41Thinking about it.
25:43Looks like she's got the rope for stomach.
25:45Chooses it. That's wrong. The correct answer is skull.
25:47But you've got to give her credit for her effort.
25:49Hey, Tiffany!
25:51Listen, great job all day long.
25:53We'll let you catch your breath.
25:55Let's go to Peggy now, who's got the tabulation on the scores.
25:57Good job, Tiffany. Good job.
25:59The blue team answers
26:01three questions correctly for 75 points.
26:03Their eliminator time
26:05is 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
26:07Now it's heat two and it's the red team's turn.
26:09At the starting line
26:11is Joseph leading off.
26:13And Jennifer's set for tag in the middle.
26:15Peggy, let's do it.
26:17That's the start of the
26:19eliminator. Joseph now
26:21climbing up the ladder.
26:23A little problem going up.
26:25Goes down, sees a slide.
26:27Slide! Right down to the plank.
26:29All right, a test of his upper body strength.
26:31And he's got it, believe me.
26:33You know he did 95 push-ups in the tryouts?
26:35In 60 seconds, I heard.
26:37Here he goes now. Adrenaline's pumping.
26:39Look at mom and dad and the family.
26:41Almost across.
26:43Nice poise. Down to the plank.
26:45Question number one.
26:47Imaginary characters and events are fiction or nonfiction.
26:49He is thinking about it.
26:51And he chose fiction. Right answer. Way to go, man.
26:53The Bay of Balls, pulling himself up.
26:55Then it's on to phase two of the Bay of Balls.
26:57If you get too far down in there, it's tough to get out.
26:59Goes under the wire. Nice job.
27:01It's like quicksand. It's really hard to pull your body out of it.
27:03Good recovery, though. Here he goes, fighting his way to the top.
27:05He's jamming. You the man, Joe?
27:07You the man! You the man!
27:09He's on to the second question.
27:11Going down. Look at his horse go.
27:13It's going to be worth 25 points if he gets it right.
27:15And the second question is, naive, mean, rugged, or innocent?
27:17Thinks about it. Deliberates and chooses.
27:19The right answer, which is innocent!
27:21Jennifer gets the tag. Hits the hurdles now.
27:23Let's see how she does. Nice stride.
27:25She is flying across the hurdles. Good stride.
27:27Third question, worth 25 points.
27:29Egypt, is it Asia or Africa?
27:31Chooses Asia. That's wrong.
27:33Uh-oh.
27:35Uh-oh. Balls back.
27:37Bounces from the plexiglass there.
27:39Here she goes now, trying again.
27:41This is a lot harder than it looks.
27:43These kids have already done Swingshot and the Pyramid.
27:45I tell you what, I like to see that aggressiveness.
27:47She's going for it again.
27:49Close up-off!
27:51Hawk is coaching her to go around
27:53because she's already made three attempts.
27:55Yeah, that's the rule. Three tries, can't do it, then you're around.
27:57Now to the treadmill. Look at the drive.
27:59Pumping the legs, using the arms. Good.
28:01First try to the top.
28:03Oh!
28:05She's sliding back down. She's going to have to start from the bottom.
28:07Hawk gets so fired up. He was up there with her,
28:09helping her along. She is determined.
28:11All right, round number two. Trying.
28:13Let's see what happens.
28:15Again. She's a little bit frustrated.
28:17It's very intense.
28:19We've stopped the treadmill. Now to the top for the final question.
28:21We're at 25 points.
28:23Cranium is another word
28:25for part of the skull or the stomach.
28:27And she's going to the skull,
28:29which is the right answer.
28:31Takes the rope, swings through the barrier to the finish.
28:33Super work.
28:35What's up? Good job, bud.
28:37Nice work. Nice work.
28:39All right, what was the toughest part for you in the first leg?
28:41The rings. Rings. Toughest part for you in the first leg?
28:43The treadmill.
28:45The treadmill.
28:47You guys are troopers.
28:49Let's all catch a breath real quick.
28:51Peggy Odita's got the score, Peggy.
28:53The red team answers
28:55three questions correctly for 75 points.
28:57Their eliminator time of
28:59two minutes and 25 seconds
29:01earns their team the 50 extra bonus points.
29:03All right, blue team.
29:05That means you guys sold it up for the day
29:07at 158 points. Great job.
29:09And the red team came in at 217 points.
29:11Yes!
29:13Good work, guys.
