00:00$25,000 in cash, a combination guaranteed to make you say...
00:05And now, here's the star of our show, Tom Kennedy.
00:10Oh, ran all the way over here. Hi there.
00:12Welcome to our show. You pronounce it?
00:15And here's a lady who knows why we call her Tom Kennedy.
00:19Tom?
00:20Tom.
00:21Tom.
00:22Tom.
00:23Tom.
00:24Tom.
00:25Tom.
00:26Oh, you pronounce it?
00:28And here's a lady who knows why we call her our champion, Pat Aiello.
00:33You know why we call our program, don't you?
00:37She is a champ. So far, she's earned $1,140.
00:41She is soon to enter UCLA. She is out here from Cleveland, Ohio.
00:45And we wish you the best of luck, Pat.
00:47We've added up your money, and I'll tell you about that in a minute.
00:49Right now, I want you to meet 10 of the most zealous xenophobics
00:53who ever stood between a Euclid and her money, and here they are.
00:57They are the xenophobics.
01:12If you've never seen a zealous xenophobic, you've now seen 10 of them.
01:15What do you say, xenophobia?
01:19That's what xenophobics always say. They don't know what else to say.
01:22All right, if you get from villain number 1 through villain number 10,
01:25you win $25,000 in cash, and it's just that simple.
01:30Now, we figure out how much time you have.
01:32You get 60 seconds plus 1 second for each $100 you earned in playing the game.
01:36So between charging and blocking, you won $840.
01:39So that means you have 8 seconds added to 60 seconds, and that's good.
01:42That's a total of 68 seconds. You all set?
01:45Yes.
01:46So am I, Pat. You get on your mark. I'll get on mine.
01:4868 seconds on the clock.
01:50The gauntlet and the clock will begin with the first bell.
01:53Billy Patson becomes Captain Marvel when he says shaboom.
01:56Shazam!
01:58A Stephen Crane novel about the Civil War was The Red Badge of Ketchup.
02:01Hey!
02:03On the Holly Doody TV show, the chief of Arachneck tribe was named Thunder Thighs.
02:08Uh...
02:10One of Mr. Cotter's sweat hogs is named Arnold Horse Face.
02:14Uh, Horse Snigger!
02:16The logical place to put rabbit ears is on a bunny.
02:20Rabbit ears? Uh...
02:22The O in O.J. Simpson's first name really stands for orange.
02:26Uh, Ornelius!
02:28Gerald Frank wrote about the city-wide search for the Boston Celtics.
02:32Strangler!
02:34In 1956, Les Baxter recorded his hit record, The Poor People of Cleveland.
02:39Uh, New York!
02:41In the comic strip Peanuts, Lucy Van Pelt is in love with sex.
02:45Uh, Schroeder!
02:47Robert Smith is the real name of disc jockey Wolfman Schwartz.
02:50Uh, Jack!
02:52During World War II, if American gunners were shooting at a zero, they were aiming at nothing.
02:57Uh...
02:59In tennis, if you have a mind...
03:01Time's up!
03:03We got up to you, the clock did.
03:05You got up to the sixth villain, however.
03:07It says we are so smart, and they're so smug.
03:11But you got through five of them.
03:12That earns for you $500.
03:14Add it to your previous winnings, brings you up to $2,480.
03:18And you can take on a new challenger, Pat.
03:20We'll do that right after these words for you.
03:22All right.
03:27You've got a good detergent.
03:29But maybe you can do better.
03:31Powder detergents work best on dirt and stains.
03:35But that's only part of the job.
03:38Liquid detergents work best on grease.
03:41That's still only part of the job.
03:43Now there's a revolutionary detergent
03:46that combines the best dirt and stain-fighting ingredients of powders
03:50with the best grease-fighting ingredient of liquids in one.
03:54Fresh Start.
03:56Fresh Start is specially designed to work effectively on dirt and grease
04:01and many common stains.
04:03No detergent is more effective on more soils.
04:07Yet Fresh Start is not a liquid and it's not an ordinary powder,
04:11but a highly concentrated granular detergent.
04:14So concentrated, just a quarter cup cleans your whole wash.
04:18Try Fresh Start.
04:21It combines the best of powders and the best of liquids in one.
04:30If you'd like to be a contestant on...
04:34Then write to us.
04:37Write to...

04:50And now back to Tom Kennedy and...
04:54Oh, thank you, Rod. And please write.
04:56Rod's a lonely man.
04:58Thank you. Thank you, Rod.
05:00Well, this is Pat D'Aiello. She's our current champion.
05:02She has $2,480,
05:05and her friends and relatives back there in Cleveland
05:07are just jumping up and down for joy.
05:09And now we're gonna meet your new challenger.
05:11Here he comes, ladies and gentlemen, Randy Amicia.
05:13Hello, Randy. It is Amicia.
05:15Yes, sir.
05:16All right, Randy, tell me about yourself.
05:18Well, I'll be going to California State University Northridge
05:20this fall majoring in behavioral psychology.
05:22Mm-hmm.
05:23And I currently work in a behavioral psychology laboratory
05:26here in Los Angeles.
05:27Very good. So you're already in the field.
05:29Yeah, sort of.
05:30All right. Since you're our challenger, Randy,
05:32you get to decide whether you want to charge or block.
05:34The first board is show business.
05:35The second one is science.
05:36On show business, Randy, charge or block?
05:38I think I'll charge.
05:39You'll charge. All right.
05:40Then I want you to charge right on out of here,
05:42out of sight and out of hearing.
05:44And there goes Pat over there.
05:45And he's all tucked away now.
05:47Now, Pat, you get to do your blocking.
05:48Go right ahead. It's show business.
05:50Go to work.
05:51Okay. Level 1, $10.
05:52Number 1, $10.

06:12All right.
06:13Randy, are you all set?
06:15I'm not sure.
06:16Let's get you all together here now.
06:18You almost went all the way through the set there.
06:21You're anxious, huh?
06:22Nothing new?
06:23Nothing new. All right.
06:24Now, Randy, this is devoted to show business.
06:26You have 60 seconds on the clock.
06:28Of course, you know about time running out.
06:30If you find the time is running out,
06:31you can call a long shot, and that'll stop the clock.
06:34You all set?
06:35As much as I'll ever be.
06:36What's that?
06:37As much as I'll ever be.

07:48But you had a crack at it there, Randy.
07:50Come on over here.
07:51You gave it a good shot there.
07:53You got all the way up to the sixth level.
07:55You got to the sixth level,
07:56had one chance at it.
07:57Let's go back to level 3.

09:02It's wonderful.
09:03For years, I couldn't because gum stuck to my dental work.
09:06But now, there's Freedent gum.
09:08It doesn't stick.
09:09So, I can enjoy all the pleasures of chewing gum again.
09:12The delicious flavor, fresh, clean breath and refreshing taste.
09:16All that's possible again with Freedent gum from Wrigley's.
09:20It comes in peppermint and spearmint.
09:22You'll love it.
09:23Feel free to chew Freedent.
09:25It won't stick to most dental work.
09:27Freedent gum.
09:31My husband's a commercial fisherman.
09:33So, we can afford fresh fish.
09:35The finest kind.
09:36Mrs. Barbara Dombrowski talks about how she feeds her family.
09:40Now, with macaroni and cheese, we think raft is the finest kind.
09:44And it's only pennies more.
09:46The cheese sauce is thick and rich.
09:48And none of it goes to waste.
09:50Feeding my family is important.
09:52So, when I can, I get the kind of food we like best.
09:55Like craft macaroni and cheese dinner.
09:57You know they're gonna like it.
10:02When you've got Velveeta processed cheese spread, good ideas keep popping up.

10:21Velveeta, just popping with good ideas.
10:25No wonder it's so popular.
10:27America smells cheese.
10:29K-R-A-F-T.
10:34Welcome back to Round 2 of our show.
10:36Our charger's already been tucked away.
10:38She's out of sight, not of hearing.
10:40Now, Randy, Amasia, there's the board.
10:42It's science, and you can place only one block on the sixth level.
10:45No more than three on any one of the remaining ones.
10:47And then, of course, you'll be credited with the amount of money
10:50that is attached to the blocks that Pat might encounter.
10:52Go, Randy. What are you gonna do?
10:53Okay, well, she didn't hit me with any blocks,
10:55but I'm still frustrated because I didn't win,
10:57so I want to get her and force her into a long shot.
10:59How are you gonna do that, Randy?
11:00Well, I'm gonna start with a level 2.
11:02Uh-huh.
11:03Ten bucks.
11:04I see.
11:05Level 3, ten bucks.
11:06Uh-huh.
11:07Level 4, ten, twenty, and forty.
11:12Uh-huh.
11:13Ten, twenty, and forty.
11:14Yeah, we'll get that.
11:15Yeah, okay, now.
11:16Okay.
11:17Level 6, rather.
11:19Oh, wait a minute.
11:20You have two, four.
11:21You have two blocks remaining.
11:22Oh, I have two blocks remaining?
11:23Yeah.
11:24One, two, three, four.
11:25Two, four, five.
11:26I'm sorry.
11:27You have one.
11:28Sorry.
11:29It's okay.
11:30I have fun geometry.
11:31It's...
11:32So, wait...
11:33Three fifty.
11:34All right, three fifty.
11:35Well, now, that was easy, wasn't it?
11:36Yeah.
11:37Now that we've done that...
11:38Ready to recharge it.
11:39Okay, let's see what happens here
11:40as we're bringing out Pat on the yellow
11:42who won the first round.
11:44Well, now, Pat, if you win this round,
11:46you will remain our champ.
11:47If you lose the round and Randy gets it,
11:49and I think he wants it over there,
11:50then you'll have a tire-breaking round.
11:52The board is devoted to science.
11:53You have 60 seconds on the clock,
11:55so giving me the level and the money amount.
11:58Charge!
11:59Level 1, ten dollars.
12:00One ten.
12:01The greatest of the Earth's bodies of water
12:03is the terrific ocean.
12:04Pacific.
12:05Level 2, ten dollars.
12:06Two ten.
12:08Four.
12:09Three.
12:10Two.
12:11One.
12:12Same level, two.
12:13Level 2, forty dollars.
12:14Forty.
12:15The Wright brothers made their first daring flight
12:17over Kitty Carlisle.
12:18Uh...
12:19Ha!
12:20Level 3, ten dollars.
12:21Four.
12:22Three.
12:23Ten.
12:24One.
12:25Four.
12:26Three.
12:27Two.
12:28One.
12:29Same level, three.
12:30Level three, thirty dollars.
12:31Thirty.
12:32Old-fashioned radios used vacuum tubes,
12:33but portable radios today use little transvestites.
12:35Transistor.
12:37Four.
12:38Three.
12:39Two.
12:40One.
12:41Same level, four.
12:42Level four, thirty dollars.
12:43Forty.
12:44Thirty.
12:45In an airplane, the gauge that tells you
12:46how high you are is the droncometer.
12:48Uh...
12:51Same level, four.
12:52Level four, forty dollars.
12:53Four.
12:54Forty.
12:55One.
12:56Four.
12:57Three.
12:58Two.
12:59One.
13:00Long shot!
13:01And she calls her long shot just in time.
13:02She had only one second to call for that long shot
13:05and she counted down to zero as she said it.
13:07Now, well, look at all that.
13:09You got four blocks.
13:10Now you're on level four,
13:11but the long shot will take you immediately to level six.
13:14I didn't say it was gonna be easy.
13:16Randy, there are three secret buttons on your podium.
13:19I want you to push one of them right now,
13:20which will place a secret block on the sixth level.
13:22Would you do that, Randy?
13:25All right.
13:26Now, there may also be a previously placed block
13:28on that level as well,
13:29but if you find the blooper and if you correct it,
13:31you win the round, anything else,
13:32and Randy wins the round.
13:34Pat, which position you want?
13:36350.
13:37350.
13:38And Randy wins the round.
13:40He was fighting for his life.
13:43Come on over here, Pat.
13:45Randy, come on over here.
13:47You kind of wanted that round, didn't you?
13:49I sure did.
13:50Every time she came back
13:51and tried to take the easy route on ten,
13:53though, she ran into a block.
13:55Now, in an airplane,
13:56the thing that tells you how high you are is the altimeter,
13:59not the droncometer.
14:00And so, that means we have one round apiece.
14:03The next category is women,
14:04and, Pat, it is your choice.
14:06On women, do you want to charge or block?
14:08I will charge.
14:09Charge, she says.
14:10Then I want you to charge right on out of here.
14:12Get back there in blocking position.
14:14And now, our next round tiebreaker after this.
14:19Sure, Mom used grease relief,
14:21but only on her stove.
14:23She used other cleaners everywhere else.
14:25I said, Mom, with grease relief,
14:27you don't need those other cleaners.
14:29But I only get grease on my stove.
14:31She said, Mom,
14:32I said, when you cook,
14:33smoke and grease go everywhere.
14:35There's greasy dirt way over here.
14:37Why buy all those other cleaners?
14:39Use grease relief instead.
14:41One day, she caught me using a special floor cleaner.
14:44Know what she said?
14:45You ought to use grease relief instead.
14:47Use grease relief instead.
14:50Next time a little excitement
14:51makes your taste buds demand to be drenched,
14:53think about Nestea.
14:55Tea, tea, tea, tea, tea, tea.
14:58Tea, tea, tea, tea, nasty.
15:00Tea, tea, tea, tea, tea, tea.
15:02Tea, tea, nasty, I say.
15:04Nestea.
15:05With 100% tea taste,
15:07so thirst-bursting,
15:08so tongue-splashing,
15:09brewed tea flavor,
15:10so wet, so clean
15:11that nothing drenches your taste buds like Nestea.
15:14Taste the real tea, Nestea,
15:16and take the Nestea, Nestea punch.
15:18Ah!
15:20We're looking good.
15:23Hey, these kids have the fever,
15:25California fever,
15:26when every day is sun and fun
15:28and every night is something else.
15:31Jimmy McNichol and Mark McClure
15:33star in California Fever,
15:35new this fall, Tuesdays.
15:38Looking good.
15:42This is our tie-breaking round.
15:44Pat Aiello, our charger,
15:46is now offstage.
15:47She cannot hear and she cannot see us.
15:49This is Randy Amasia,
15:51who would like to unseat Pat.
15:53Very much so.
15:54Randy, the board is devoted to women,
15:56and now six blocks are at your disposal.
15:58What would you like to do with them?
15:59Okay, I'm going to skip level one again,
16:01modify my strategy just a little bit.
16:03Level two, I'm going to go on 20 and 30.
16:0720 and 30.
16:09And level four,
16:11I'm going to go 10.
16:15Uh-huh.
16:1730.
16:18And 40.
16:21You have psychologically analyzed
16:23this whole thing, haven't you?
16:25Hopefully.
16:26All right, you have one more.
16:27I think I'm going to go level six.
16:30Level six.
16:31200, I mean 500.
16:33500, he says.
16:34All right.
16:35Well, there we have it,
16:36and that's an interesting pattern.
16:37Let's see how that works out for you, Randy.
16:39Here comes Pat Aiello.

23:46This is the CBS
23:47mid-morning news
23:49with Douglas Edwards.
23:51Good day from the CBS
23:52newsroom in New York.
23:54Moscow and Washington
23:55began negotiations
23:56again this morning
23:57in an effort
23:58to solve the stalemate
23:59over the Soviet ballerina
24:01Lyudmila Vlasova
24:02and her defecting
24:03husband's efforts
24:04to find out
24:05whether she really
24:06wants to go home.
24:07Jim Kilpatrick reports.
24:09-♪♪
24:22The U.S. has refused
24:23to allow the ballerina
24:24off the plane
24:25to come inside the terminal
24:27to tell American authorities
24:28whether she wants
24:29to return to Russia or not.
24:31U.S. officials have refused
24:32to go aboard the plane
24:33to ask her that question.
24:35They have insisted
24:36that the questioning
24:37be conducted in a, quote,
24:38non-coercive environment.
24:40That may now be defined
24:42as the mobile van
24:43alongside the plane.
24:45The Americans have said
24:46all along,
24:47if the ballerina
24:48wants to return to Russia,
24:49all she has to do
24:50is to tell them privately
24:51that she wants to return
24:52and she is free to return.
24:54The mobile van
24:55may now be the location
24:56for that conversation.
24:58Jim Kilpatrick,

25:01Kennedy Airport.
25:02The two-day siege
25:03of the Las Vegas City Jail
25:05ended its gunfire
25:06this morning.
25:07Two inmates
25:08were shot to death
25:09and one of the three guards
25:10being held hostage
25:11was slightly wounded.
25:13Police regained control
25:14after some of the inmates
25:15turned against the ringleaders
25:17of the uprising.
25:19Lord Mountbatten,
25:20a 79-year-old British war hero
25:22and cousin of Queen Elizabeth,
25:24was killed in an explosion
25:25on his boat in Ireland today.
25:27A radical branch
25:28of the Irish Republican Army
25:30has claimed responsibility
25:32and the police are checking in
25:33to that telephone call.
25:43The smile on your face
25:44is there because
25:46you know that your mouth
25:47tastes great.
25:49And it's nice when
25:50their teeth are getting strong
25:52and the clean in your mouth
25:54is Colgate.
25:56Colgate is more than
25:57a brisk, clean taste.
25:58With regular brushing,
25:59Colgate's fluoride
26:00penetrates the surface
26:01of tooth enamel.
26:02Not this fast,
26:03but it gets in
26:04and fights cavities.
26:05There's a twinkle in your eye
26:06when there's fluoride
26:07for their teeth
26:08and the clean in your mouth
26:09is Colgate.
26:12It's hurting right in here.
26:14Bernadette Clausen

26:18It feels like right here,
26:19it's still there.
26:21So we're giving her
26:22a new Extra Strength
26:23Tylenol Adult Liquid.
26:25Because it's a liquid,
26:26it's easier to swallow

26:28I feel better,
26:29a lot better.
26:30I think it's terrific.
26:32It was easy to get down,
26:33much easier than
26:34when I have to take a pill.
26:35Extra Strength
26:36Tylenol Adult Liquid.
26:37Easier to swallow
26:38and you can't buy
26:39a more potent pain reliever

26:43Vice President Mondale
26:44is the star of
26:45Chinese television today.
26:47A day which began
26:48with his first
26:49official meeting
26:50with a Chinese leader.
26:51Jed Duval
26:52reports from Peking.
26:54President Mondale
26:55brought some American offers
26:56to his first formal talks
26:57with Vice Premier
26:58Deng Xiaoping.
26:59Little was said
27:00about their three-hour meeting.
27:01But Mondale then spelled out
27:03energy and trade proposals
27:04at Peking University
27:06in a speech to faculty
27:07and administrators
27:08of this and other universities.
27:10The U.S. will sell China
27:11advice and equipment
27:12for enormous
27:13hydroelectric projects
27:15similar to the
27:16Tennessee Valley Authority.
27:18Export-import bank credits
27:19will be offered to China.
27:21Two billion dollars or more
27:22over five years
27:23to finance trade.
27:25Guarantees will be set up
27:26to back U.S. business investment
27:28in China.
27:30The Chinese were perhaps
27:31listening more carefully
27:32to Mondale's words
27:33about international strategy.
27:35They've been seeking assurance,
27:36anything they can get,
27:37to balance growing
27:38Soviet power in the East.
27:40This is as far
27:41as the Vice President went.
27:44Thus, any nation
27:45which seeks to weaken
27:47or isolate you
27:48in world affairs
27:50assumes a stance
27:51counter to American interests.
27:55At the university,
27:56Mondale became the first
27:57American official
27:58ever to make a public speech
27:59in Communist China.
28:00The speech will be seen
28:01on nationwide television here
28:03by tape delay
28:04in prime time, unedited.
28:06With a billion people
28:07and only one channel to watch,
28:09that gives Mondale
28:10the world's largest
28:11television audience.
