Students are being urged to ‘think before you click’ any links sent by the Student Loans Company. Millions of pounds worth of student loan payments were saved from scammers last year, with providers urging students to be on the lookout for text-based ‘smishing’ scams.

00:06Scammers often target university students this time of year to try and steal their first maintenance loan payment.
00:13This year, students will already be heading off to universities all across the UK for the start of their 2024 and 2025 academic year.
00:24And many of these students are also receiving a maintenance loan, which helps to cover living expenses including rent and food and course related costs.
00:34And they will be getting their first big instalment paid out by the student loans company.
00:40The student loans company is expecting to send around two billion pounds to students over the autumn term.
00:46Last year, the student loan company says it stopped just under three million pounds of maintenance loan payments from being stolen in smishing scams.
00:55And students are being told to look out for scams this year.
