00:00Let's talk about when to decide on sterilization, whether men should do it or women should do
00:06it.
00:07In fact, there's a lot of fundamental difference between tubal ligations and also vasectomy
00:13that is done.
00:16Fundamentally, there are three major differences.
00:24Number one is that the vasectomy is a simpler operation that can be done with local anesthesia.
00:32So when that is done, the men will experience a little bit of local anesthetic injection
00:37for the numbing of the skin and the vasectomy itself can be done with a man completely awake.
00:44On the other hand, tubal ligation is an operation that tends to be requiring either a laparoscopic
00:51surgery or an open surgery to tie the two tubes.
00:56Imagine the actual operation itself has to go through the abdominal wall, then there's
01:02always that risk of injuring other organs.
01:06Apart from that, you also have the risk associated with general anesthesia because tubal ligation
01:12can never be done under local anesthesia.
01:16So number two fundamental difference is actually the reversibility.
01:22When a woman undergoes tubal ligation, the tube itself is almost impossible to be joined
01:27back together because that itself requires a complex procedure and the blood supply may
01:33prohibit the reconnections of the tube.
01:36Therefore, it is generally perceived as permanently impossible for reconnection.
01:42However, on the other hand, there is a possibility of joining back the actual vas itself.
01:51That is called vasovasostomy or the reversal of vasectomy.
01:55Of course, if you leave it long enough, then the joining back together may not be so successful.
02:02However, failing that, there's always that option of finding one sperm in order to create
02:08a test tube baby for you.
02:10And number three, it's cost.
02:13The cost for tubal ligation is significantly higher because the woman has to be admitted
02:19to hospital, has to undergo a general anesthesia, theater operating charges, anesthesia charges,
02:27and they all add up.
02:28However, if the guy choose to do it, most of the time we can do it in the clinic.
02:33There's no need for a daycare, there's no need for operating theater, and when it's
02:38done in local anesthetic room, you walk in and you walk out in no time and your cost
02:42will be significantly lower.
02:44For the following week, we want to talk about reversibility of vasectomy.
02:49Then stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
