00:00 Yesterday was the last day of Chinese New Year.
00:03 However, it's not too late if you're contemplating to have a dragon baby.
00:08 So especially for those of you who already changed your mind about having babies and
00:12 underwent vasectomy and now thinking about a reversal of vasectomy in order to produce
00:19 another offspring.
00:21 So exactly what's the difference between the woman and men's sterilization?
00:26 In women, the actual connection of the ligated Philippine tube is impossible.
00:38 However, in the men, when you undergo vasectomy, the actual rejoining of this is completely
00:47 possible and a procedure called reversal of vasectomy or vasovasostomy.
00:54 So how exactly is it done?
00:56 Well it's not as simple as the vasectomy itself because vasectomy is done under local
01:01 anesthesia, but reversal is done under general anesthesia.
01:07 And during this time, microscope is being utilized so that the reversal can be done
01:12 with intricacy.
01:14 The success rate of reversal is very important because the earlier you change your mind,
01:21 the higher the success rate.
01:23 And for example, if you change your mind within 10 years, the success rate of the patency
01:28 of the sperm going through that reversal site is about 90%, but beyond 10 years, that can
01:35 drop to about 60%.
01:37 However, success rate doesn't translate to having a baby because there is obviously other
01:44 consideration to take into account.
01:46 For example, there's such thing called anti-sperm antibodies.
01:51 So when there's a lot of manipulation of the testicle, the sperm testicular barrier, the
01:57 sperm blood barrier is actually being compromised and the body will build up autoimmune system
02:04 that will attack the sperm itself.
02:06 So anti-sperm antibodies may not be so helpful.
02:10 So under that circumstance, the actual pregnancy rate is only half.
02:16 For example, within 10 years of doing a reversal, the patency rate is about 90%, but the pregnancy
02:23 rate is only about 50%.
02:26 In order to overcome this, there is such thing called artificial reproductive technology,
02:33 which is test tube baby.
02:34 So what we can do as clinician is that we go and look for one healthy sperm and create
02:41 a healthy baby for you.
02:43 Voila, you don't even need to undergo the reversal of vasectomy.
02:48 So for the next month, we're going to focus a little bit differently on different type
02:53 of medication that helps with erection.
02:56 Yes, the blue pills.
02:57 Stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
