00:00So, what is a sentence?
00:10A sentence is a word or group of words which expresses a complete thought.
00:15A sentence has to include two things, a subject, person, place or thing, and an action, a doing
00:24word.
00:28When writing a sentence, there are some important things that you need to remember.
00:35The first thing is that sentences always begin with a capital or uppercase letter.
00:44The next thing to remember is to use finger spaces between each word, so we know when
00:50a word ends and a new one begins.
00:56Let's use this sentence for example, the cat sat down.
01:02I can read this sentence because it has finger spaces and I can see each word clearly.
01:08What would happen if I took out the finger spaces?
01:11Ugh, hmmm, the cat sat it down.
01:18Yeah, that does not make sense.
01:24The final thing we need to always remember is to use punctuation at the end of a sentence
01:30with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
01:34We use different punctuation depending on our sentence.
01:39For example, if I'm telling you something like, I'm going to have some lunch, I would
01:46use a period.
01:49I use a question mark when I'm asking you a question.
01:52Would you like to have some lunch?
01:56And I use an exclamation mark when I'm expressing a strong or forceful emotion, such as, I am
02:03so hungry, I need lunch.
02:12Let's practice writing a sentence together now.
02:15I'm going to use this image to help us make a sentence.
02:20Let's write, the cat is in a hat.
02:23Can you say that with me?
02:25The cat is in a hat.
02:29When writing our sentence, we always start on the left and write across, all the way
02:33to the end, and then move on to the next line.
02:38What was our first word?
02:40The.
02:41Okay, so when starting a sentence, do you remember what our first letter needs to be?
02:48That's right, a capital letter.
02:50Now the is a tricky word, and I know it's T-H-E.
02:55So I'm going to write a capital T, then a H and an E.
03:00Great work.
03:02Now we've written our first word, what do we need to do before the next?
03:08That's right, a finger space, so the reader can see that it's a new word to read.
03:13Cat.
03:14Sound it out, c-a-t, cat, awesome.
03:21The cat is, i-s, is.
03:29I always read through what I've written so far, so I don't miss words.
03:34The cat is in, i-n, great.
03:40Now I'm at the end of the line, where do I go?
03:44To the left hand side of the next line.
03:49The cat is in, a, finger space, hat, h-a-t, hat, awesome.
04:01Now we've written our sentence, how do we finish?
04:05With a period.
04:08Super work.
04:09You've just written a complete sentence.
04:14Now it's your turn, can you think of and write your own complete sentence?
