In a powerful speech at a Wisconsin rally, Vice President Kamala Harris took aim at former President Donald Trump, condemning his support for "immoral" abortion bans. Harris emphasised the Biden administration’s commitment to protecting reproductive rights, framing the issue as a fundamental battle for women’s autonomy. Her sharp criticism of Trump and Republican policies ignited the crowd, underscoring the high stakes of the ongoing debate over abortion access in the U.S. The rally comes as the 2024 election cycle intensifies, with reproductive rights at the forefront of national discussions.

00:00Good evening, Wisconsin!
00:02And it's great to be back in Madison!
00:16And you know I got some Madison cred, right?
00:29Oh, thank you all. It really is great to be back.
00:36Thank you all for being here.
00:38Thank you very much.
00:40Thank you. Thank you.
00:43And can we please thank Bill for fighting every day for the working people of America!
00:53And to everyone at Teamsters Joint Council 39, I am so honored and grateful for your endorsement.
01:01I will work so closely with you, as we always have, and we will win!
01:06And we will win!
01:09And we will win!
01:16And it's so great to be with all of the leaders who are here.
01:19This is an auditorium full of leaders, including our dear friend and your governor, Tony Evers.
01:31Senator Tammy Baldwin, who you will re-elect to the United States Senate.
01:40Representative Pocan.
01:45Mayor Rose Conway.
01:51And I have to give a special thanks to the mayor, because the last time I was in Madison,
01:56we went to the house where I lived when I was five years old.
02:01Here in Madison.
02:03So many of you know, and my sister Maya's here, so our parents taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
02:11and so we lived here for a period of time.
02:19So every time I land, the governor says, welcome home.
02:24So thank you all, to all the leaders who are here.
02:27Elected leaders and community leaders and just neighborhood leaders, family leaders, all that you are.
02:35So here we are.
02:38All right, we got work to do.
02:4146 days until the election.
02:4346 days until the election.
02:47And what we know, this is going to be a tight race until the very end.
02:52So let's not pay too much attention to the polls, because let's be clear.
02:58We are the underdog in this race.
03:01And we have some hard work ahead of us.
03:05But here's the thing.
03:06We like hard work.
03:09We like hard work.
03:11Hard work is good work.
03:13Hard work is joyful work.
03:21And with your help in November, we will win.
03:30We will win.
03:33So some of you might have seen the debate last week that I had with Donald Trump.
03:43It was fun.
03:46And I talked about issues that matter to families across America, like bringing down the cost of living,
03:56investing in America's small businesses,
03:59protecting reproductive freedom,
04:07and keeping our nation safe and secure.
04:11But that is not what we heard from Donald Trump.
04:16Instead, it was the same old tired show.
04:22The same old tired playbook we've heard for years.
04:27With no plan on how he would address the needs of the American people.
04:33Well, folks, it's time to turn the page.
04:39Time to turn the page.
04:43And America is ready to chart a new way forward.
04:49We are ready.
04:52We are ready.
04:55We are ready for a new generation of leadership that is optimistic about what we can do together.
05:09Because we're tired of all that division and hate they're pushing.
05:14We here know the vast majority of us have so much more in common than what separates us.
05:22And that's what our campaign is about.
05:25Understanding that this is a people-powered campaign,
05:29that this is a campaign about building community, building coalitions,
05:34reminding us all that we are all in this together,
05:39and that we're going to be good and all right.
05:43We're in this together.
05:52Which is why Democrats, Republicans, and Independents are supporting our campaign.
05:58Because they want a president.
06:00We want a president who works for all the American people.
06:04And I promise you that is the kind of president I will be.
06:11I promise that.
06:17Now many of you know my background.
06:19My entire career, I have fought for the people.
06:22As a young courtroom prosecutor in Oakland,
06:24I stood up for women and children against predators who abused them.
06:29As Attorney General of California,
06:31I took on the big banks and delivered $20 billion for middle-class families
06:36who faced foreclosure because of predatory lending practices.
06:40I stood up for veterans and students who were being scammed by the big for-profit colleges,
06:52and for workers who were being cheated out of the wages they were due,
06:58and for seniors facing elder abuse.
07:02And as president, I will fight on behalf of all communities and all Americans,
07:15and together we will build a brighter future for our nation.
07:21Together, we will build a future where we build what I call an opportunity economy,
07:34so every American has the opportunity to own a home, to build wealth, to start a small business.
07:42And I'll tell you, I love our small businesses.
07:52For the small business leaders who are here, can you raise your hand?
07:55Our small business leaders are extraordinary.
07:59So you know, growing up, before our mother could afford to buy a house,
08:11we lived in an apartment above a child care center.
08:14It was owned by a woman by the name of Mrs. Shelton,
08:18and she helped raise my sister Maya and me,
08:21because my mother worked long days and sometimes on weekends.
08:25We called Ms. Shelton our second mother, and she was a small business owner.
08:30So from childhood, I have known the character and work ethic of our small business owners,
08:38and I know small business owners are the backbone of America's economy,
08:51which is why my plan offers a new way forward
08:56and will give a $50,000 tax deduction to help entrepreneurs start their small businesses.
09:09I also know we need to build more housing in America.
09:14You know, my mother saved up for years,
09:17and when I was a teenager, she was finally able to buy her first home.
09:22I know what that dream is like.
09:25I know what it is like for people to work hard and to save up and have a dream
09:31that is about the dignity of their work and an investment in their future,
09:37the future of their family,
09:39and investment in the pride they so rightly deserve because of their hard work.
09:53But right now on the affordable housing issue,
09:55look, we have a shortage of housing in America,
09:57and it's contributing to driving up prices.
09:59So with my plan, we are going to cut red tape
10:03and work with the private sector to build 3 million new homes by the end of my first term.
10:14And provide first-time homebuyers with $25,000 in down payment assistance
10:24so they can just get their foot in the door.
10:34Because unlike my opponent, who was basically handed $400 million on a silver platter
10:41and then filed bankruptcy six times,
10:47we know that most people need to just have the opportunity
10:51to actually get their foot in the door to achieve their dream and their aspirations.
11:04We also need to lower the cost of living,
11:07because while our economy is doing well by many measures,
11:11prices for everyday necessities like groceries are still too high.
11:15You know it and I know it.
11:17So I have a plan to lower costs on everything ranging from healthcare to groceries,
11:22including taking on corporate price gouging.
11:25And my plan includes giving a tax cut to 100 million Americans, including $6,000,
11:38by expanding the child tax credit for the first year of a child's life
11:43to help young and new parents buy a car seat, a crib, baby clothes,
11:50in that most significant phase of their development.
11:58And all of this is to say, I will always put the middle class and working families first.
12:05I come from the middle class, and I have never forgotten where I come from.
12:09And I never will.
12:12And I never will.
12:15Now Donald Trump, well he has a different plan.
12:19And in many ways, you've heard me say before, he is an unserious man.
12:28But the consequences of putting him back in the White House are extremely serious.
12:34Extremely serious.
12:36Just Google Project 2025.
12:41By the way, can you believe they put that thing in writing?
12:46I mean, they put it in writing, they had it bound, and they handed it out.
12:55And if you get your hands on it or just Google it,
12:58let me tell you, it's a detailed and dangerous blueprint
13:02for what he will do if he were elected president again.
13:06If Donald Trump, well, you know what?
13:09The courts will take care of that, let's take care of him in November.
13:16We'll take care of him in November, how about that?
13:27But if you look at what he's up to,
13:29Donald Trump will give billionaires and big corporations massive tax cuts.
13:34He intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.
13:39And he wants to impose what I call a Trump sales tax, because here's the thing.
13:45What he is proposing would be a 20% tax on everyday necessities,
13:51basic necessities, which economists estimate will cost
13:55most working families more than $4,000 a year extra.
13:59Think about that.
14:04And on top of all of that, he intends to end the Affordable Care Act.
14:11Remember, he tried 60 times when he was president.
14:16In fact, together with Tammy, I was a United States senator,
14:21on the floor, I don't know where she is right now,
14:23but she'll remember, and we've talked about this.
14:25We were on the floor of the United States Senate
14:28in the middle of the night when one of those votes was up,
14:32when they were trying to get rid of the Affordable Care Act.
14:34And we were all standing around after we all voted
14:37to protect the Affordable Care Act, and we were all standing around.
14:40And then the big wooden doors to the Senate well opened,
14:44and in walked the late, great John McCain.
14:49Remember that?
14:52And he said, no you don't.
14:54He said, no you don't.
14:56Remember that?
15:03But we were up against those kinds of attacks
15:08when he was president last time.
15:10And as he said in the debate, he intends to replace it,
15:14but has no plan.
15:17In fact, he has, quote, concepts of a plan.
15:23No actual plan, concepts.
15:27So, aside from that being laughable,
15:34it's very serious.
15:36Because he's basically saying he would threaten
15:39the health insurance of 45 million people in our country
15:44based on a concept.
15:46And take us back.
15:48Remember those days when insurance companies
15:51could deny people with pre-existing conditions?
15:55Remember what that was like?
15:57Well, brother, we are not going back.
16:00We are not going back.
16:03We are not going back.
16:06We will not go back.
16:13We're not going back.
16:16We're not going back.
16:20No, we are not.
16:22We will move forward.
16:25And just like Wisconsin's state motto tells us,
16:29forward is where we go.
16:33Forward is where we go.
16:38Because ours, ours is a fight for the future.
16:44And ours is a fight for freedom.
16:53Like the fundamental freedom of a woman
16:57to make decisions about her own body
17:02and not have her government telling her what to do.
17:08Freedom.
17:14And we remember how we got here.
17:16Donald Trump handpicked three members of the United States Supreme Court
17:20with the intention that they would undo the protections of Roe v. Wade.
17:25And they did exactly as he intended.
17:28And now in more than 20 states,
17:31we have Trump abortion bans.
17:33Many with no exceptions even for rape and incest.
17:36It is immoral.
17:38It is immoral.
17:46And let us agree.
17:48Let us agree.
17:49One does not have to abandon their faith
17:53or deeply held beliefs
17:55to agree the government should not be telling her what to do.
18:01Not the government.
18:05Not the government.
18:12And yet,
18:14and yet in our debate,
18:16Donald Trump said that everyone wanted to overturn Roe.
18:26I have talked with folks who are here.
18:28I have talked with women around our country
18:30and the people who love them.
18:32Women are being denied care during miscarriages.
18:35Some only being treated once they develop sepsis.
18:39They didn't want this.
18:42And we know that women have died
18:46because of Trump abortion bans.
18:49I was with a mother
18:52and the two sisters of a woman who died
18:55because of Trump abortion bans just last night.
19:01You know, and her mother
19:03said the worst thing
19:06among the pain that she is experiencing
19:09is when she heard
19:12and reflects on what she was told
19:15that it was preventable.
19:19Preventable.
19:22And you know, when that decision came down
19:25just over two years ago,
19:27we predicted this would happen.
19:29And it's preventable.
19:31You know, the young woman,
19:33she was a vibrant 28-year-old young woman
19:37with a mother of a six-year-old son.
19:39Her name, Amber Nicole Thurman,
19:42who I promised her mother
19:44I will say her name every time.
19:47I will say her name every time.
19:55And so, Amber was a medical assistant.
20:00She had just learned
20:02that she was accepted to nursing school.
20:05She had her whole future planned out.
20:08And her sisters and her mother
20:10were describing her to me and they said,
20:12you know, she had such light
20:15and she had ambition and she had drive
20:18and she was so proud that she had worked so hard
20:21and she was finally gaining independence
20:23that she found an apartment in a safe community
20:26and had a little pool where her son could play.
20:29And she was so proud.
20:31She was so proud and so hopeful.
20:35And then she discovered she was pregnant
20:37and she decided to have an abortion.
20:39But because of the Trump abortion ban in Georgia,
20:42she was forced to travel out of state
20:45to receive the health care that she needed.
20:48And when she returned to Georgia,
20:50she needed additional care,
20:52so she went to a hospital in Georgia.
20:54But under the Trump abortion ban,
20:57her doctors could have faced up to a decade in prison
21:01for providing Amber the care she needed.
21:04And so she waited.
21:07For 20 excruciating hours she waited
21:12as she deteriorated.
21:17And then she reached such a state,
21:22a critical state,
21:24that the doctors finally operated
21:27and it was too late.
21:29And she died of sepsis.
21:31And recently medical experts determined
21:35that Amber's death was preventable.
21:38Preventable.
21:40So understand what a law like this means.
21:43What these kinds of laws mean.
21:45These kinds of laws under Trump abortion bans.
21:48It means doctors may have to wait
21:51until the patient is at death's door
21:54before they take any action.
21:57Nobody wants that.
21:59What is he talking about?
22:01Nobody wants that.
22:02Are we saying we're going to craft now
22:05public health policy
22:07so that doctors only kick in
22:11when you're about to die?
22:13No.
22:16This is one example of what is happening
22:19around our country right now.
22:23And this is a health care crisis.
22:25And Donald Trump is the architect.
22:27So I will say to you,
22:31because of why we are here,
22:33we're going to get Tammy re-elected
22:35to the United States Senate.
22:40And when Congress passes a bill
22:42to restore reproductive freedom,
22:48as President of the United States,
22:51I will proudly sign it into law.
22:56Proudly.
23:05And across our nation,
23:07we are witnessing a full-on assault
23:10on other hard-fought, hard-won fundamental rights
23:13and freedoms.
23:14Like the freedom to vote.
23:16The freedom to be safe from gun violence.
23:19The freedom to join a union.
23:25The freedom to love who you love openly and with pride.
23:37So we know what we are up against.
23:40We are clear-eyed about what we are up against.
23:44And we remember
23:46that generations of Americans before us
23:50led the fight for freedom.
23:53And now,
23:55the baton is in our hands.
24:00Now, it's in our hands.
24:04It's in our hands.
24:09And so much is on the line in this election.
24:12And this is not 2016 or 2020.
24:14The stakes are even higher.
24:16Because, remember, two months ago,
24:19the United States Supreme Court
24:21basically told the former president
24:23that he will effectively be immune
24:25no matter what he does in the White House.
24:30But think about that.
24:32Think about what that means.
24:33So before, at least,
24:35there was some threat of consequence.
24:39And now the court has made this decision.
24:41Think about that.
24:42Just imagine Donald Trump with no guardrails.
24:46He, who has vowed to be a dictator on day one.
24:50He, who has called for, quote,
24:53the termination of the Constitution
24:57of the United States of America.
25:03And let us be very clear.
25:05Someone who suggests
25:08we should terminate the Constitution
25:10of the United States
25:12should never again stand behind the seal
25:16of the President of the United States.
25:21Never again.
25:23Never again.
25:32Never again.
25:38So, Wisconsin, it all comes down to this.
25:42We are here together
25:44because we love our country.
25:46We love our country.
25:49And we understand
25:52the awesome responsibility
25:55that comes with the greatest privilege on Earth.
26:00The privilege and pride of being an American.
26:05The privilege and pride of being an American.
26:10And I do believe
26:14that it is one of the highest forms of patriotism
26:18to fight for the ideals of our country
26:22and to fight to realize the promise of America.
26:34So, Madison,
26:37Election Day.
26:39Yes, in 46 days.
26:41And early voting has already started in some states.
26:47Early voting in Wisconsin starts in just 32 days.
26:52And, in fact, many of you
26:54may have already received your mail-in ballots.
26:59Check this out.
27:00In-person early voting begins in Virginia and Minnesota today.
27:06And don't we love Tim Walls?
27:14He's so good. He's so good.
27:17So, all that to say, the election is basically here.
27:21It's basically here.
27:23And we have work to do
27:25to energize, to organize, and to mobilize
27:29and to remind everyone
27:31your vote is your voice.
27:33Your vote is your voice.
27:35And your voice is your power.
27:38And never let anyone take your power from you.
27:45Never.
27:50So, Madison, today I ask you,
27:52are you ready to make your voices heard?
27:57Do we believe in freedom?
28:01Do we believe in opportunity?
28:06Do we believe in the promise of America?
28:11And are we ready to fight for it?
28:17And when we fight, we win!
28:21God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.
28:30Don't miss out.
