00:00What a night of destiny. This is the Republic of Ireland in their first World Cup finals against the European champions of Holland.
00:09Knowing that victory will take them through anything less than that and they are left sweating at the end of the night which could even end in drawing of lots.
00:20The thoughts here will be very much on the England-Egypt game too obviously.
00:31It's a marvellous setting here in the La Favorita stadium in the shadow of Mount Pellegrino in Sicily.
00:41Jack Charlton just making the one change in bringing in Niall Quinn to replace Tony Cascarino who was rather out of sorts in the last game.
00:50The ball nudged forward by Richard Vitchker.
01:01Here's Vitchker with the throw. Back from Van Basten.
01:06Van Tiggelen.
01:10It was a good ball as well. It found Hillhouse and spread wide to the right.
01:14Van Halen acrobatically getting the ball back to Rijkaard.
01:18Pumped in towards Keeft in the penalty area and put behind by Mick McCarthy, the Irish captain.
01:23So Holland have a corner in the first two minutes of the game.
01:30Now this is where people like Ruud Gullit are dangerous and can indeed be deadly.
01:40He was getting up with some very good headers in training last night.
01:44Extremely tall man. It won't come to him this time but it does go to Keeft and here is Gullit on the turn.
01:49What an all credit to Ireland for that.
01:51They've got people in the way and the ball is cleared.
01:55The first sign there, Ron, that Ruud Gullit will want to get involved in everything inside the penalty area.
02:00That's right. We keep talking about the aerial power of the Irish.
02:05The Dutch have got phenomenal aerial power.
02:07Van Basten, Rijkaard when he comes forward and of course Gullit.
02:13And tonight then Keeft as well. He's six footer as well.
02:19Jack Charlton has made one interesting change.
02:22He's brought Quinn back in which you would assume was a straight one for one with Cascarino.
02:27But at the moment he's set up with Quinn playing in a central midfield position.
02:31Whether that's to try and just give him that extra bit of power in there, a bit of physical presence.
02:38Somewhat strange role for Niall Quinn as we've mentioned the City of course following his move from Arsenal.
02:44There will be an Irish free kick.
02:49Kevin Sheedy asking Aldridge to do some running down the left.
02:55And the free kick against John Aldridge.
03:00And Wouters.
03:03Forward is Van Basten, can't reach Gullit.
03:06Still the Dutch have possession with Wouters once more.
03:09Here's Ronald Koeman. Now we know that this man can hit them and he gets it.
03:12A good strike. Peggy Bonner has to parry the shot from Koeman.
03:18The man who plays for Barcelona these days and has got as fierce of a shot as anybody in world football.
03:23This is Koeman, steps in, hits the back of the ball. First time Pakistan has to make a save this season.
03:33Look there's Bonner, good catch.
03:38Quinn wins it again.
03:40He beat Rijkaard that time and that's given the Irish a bit of a chance here.
03:44Aldridge sweeps it across the penalty area and comfortably cleared by Rijkaard.
03:48Not very far, they can keep up the momentum.
03:51Here is Aldridge with a shooting chance, drives it in. Van Brekelen down to it.
03:57All starts with a bad mistake by Van Basten.
04:04Free kick against McCarthy.
04:08So the first ten minutes have passed by without any great alarms.
04:15There again we see the crunching chapel by McCarthy but he's got to let him know he's there, hasn't he?
04:21Hullit takes it on again, Hullit inside the area.
04:24Ruud Hullit gets his first goal of Italia 90.
04:30Well I said that Hullit looked as if he was in the mood.
04:33Super movement, great little ball play between him and Keeft.
04:38And for a follow-in scoring goals, he took that one confidently enough.
04:43First ball in from Koenen.
04:45Hullit sets it up, Keeft back into his run.
04:47Tight angle but he manages to slot the keeper, great finish.
04:51Hullit's first goal for his country since one against Wales two years ago.
04:56What a time for him to get it, the Dutch are back on song.
05:05What a blow to the Irish run, the last thing they needed to concede an early one.
05:09Very much so but I think the Dutch have been far more purposeful tonight than they've been in any of their games.
05:18Houghton with the free kick in, was there a push there?
05:21Referee Votro says no, well Niall Quinn will think that there was.
05:26Koenen heads it out.
05:27Outside of the penalty box I'm sure the referee Votro would have given a free kick to that.
05:30Still the danger here and a great header from Aldridge and it's not going to count.
05:35No wonder he holds his head in his hands, it was a super header.
05:40The whistle had already sounded actually before the cross came in for Aldridge's header, he didn't know that.
05:47That's right, it's a ball in, it's marginal.
05:50It's marginal that, that's two pieces of bad luck within a minute.
05:58Tries to find Sheedy.
06:05Come on Aldridge, dodgy, very dodgy indeed.
06:09And again the Irish appeal, again the appeals are rejected.
06:13He really got himself and his team into terrible trouble unnecessarily there.
06:18Yeah I think that was more of John Aldridge, the crowd obviously, that looked more like John Aldridge pressurising the keeper.
06:23It didn't look like a penalty from this position.
06:26Position.
06:33He's roamed around to good effect and there,
06:36pings the ball out to the right touchline to Van Aley.
06:40Breitkamp.
06:43Van Basten.
06:46Can they look for the movement, Hollich there, gets in the header.
06:49And he is so powerful and gets into those positions.
06:52Great positions, he's unhappy Ben Hacker because Hollich had a chance to pull that one down.
06:56Super ball threaded through by Van Basten.
06:59Measured it, chip over the top, really Hollich disappointed.
07:02He's tried to loop it over and we could have pulled that down and scored.
07:06Great support, Jack Charlton has won over the hearts of the Irish public
07:11in the four years he's been in the job and they're all here backing their team tonight.
07:15They've got a corner.
07:17It's cleared and as far as Sheedy,
07:19there aren't many better strikers of a ball in the entire football league than Kevin Sheedy.
07:24Left footed as that one dropped from the corner, I would have bet money that he'd have scored.
07:30That's his scene.
07:31Ball in, a lot of movement in the box.
07:33Headed clear, Sheedy right down the back of the ball but unlucky.
07:37Two of his players have come up to scratch in the last game, six had.
07:40So he's looking for the other five now tonight.
07:42Here's Hollich, he certainly has so far.
07:45Splendid defending, the ball is still in play.
07:48Warren got a cross to deny Hollich, but here's a cross that might cause problems.
07:53And a header from Van Basten, dealt with by Paqui Bonnet.
08:01There you see the value of Hollich, a good deep cross from the left side.
08:04Coming in at the back of the defence, Hill House it is actually.
08:07Bonnet quite confident.
08:15Tonight all their good players are playing well.
08:18But they've got to defend now.
08:20Houghton scurries away, takes it on the chest.
08:23Goes for once more, well defended against five outers.
08:27Morris, back for Townsend.
08:29Wide on the left is Staunton, screaming for the ball.
08:32He gets it.
08:36Goes past his man, now Staunton who drives in a good shot.
08:40Flies over the crossbar, we saw him have the best effort of the match against Egypt.
08:43He missed there by about six inches.
08:46This one was a bit more over the bar.
08:49And his so-called wrong foot as well, good effort.
08:53The best record in the whole of the World Cup.
08:55The Irish have that one booked as well, Morris.
09:03Staunton to have a crack.
09:06No, not chips instead.
09:10Hollich can have a dip.
09:13That wasn't a bad strike, was it?
09:31And that is it.
09:32So an entertaining half here in Palermo.
09:35The Dutch lead the Irish thanks to Ruud Hollich's first goal of these World Cup finals.
09:41They scored after ten minutes and a quality goal it was too.
09:44Half-time then, Republic of Ireland nil.
09:46Holland won.
09:4945 minutes to go then in the final match of the first phase.
09:54Holland leading the Republic of Ireland by one goal to nil.
10:00And the Irish must know that they've got to produce a goal from somewhere
10:04to stay here in Italy for the rest of the Championship.
10:12One-nil defeat would be no good for them at all.
10:15Scotland and Austria having scored more goals.
10:22Touched on to Paul McGrath.
10:24He'll have a crack and it's a good one too.
10:27And Breitling has to dive to his left to hold on.
10:31First time Paul's been in the game as an attacking force.
10:34Struck it well, great height for a keeper.
10:37Gets right behind the back of the ball but it's a great height for a keeper.
10:40A nice save but a nice one for him to make.
10:43First signs are that Quinn's pushed right up on top of the last man.
10:47Here he is now, takes it on the chest.
10:49Townsend gets up there with him and the Irish have got three men up around the penalty area.
10:53Here's Ray Houghton.
10:56Wide left is Staunton.
10:58Still there, up there, just on the edge of that area.
11:00And Breitling came and stopped on a great chance that was for the Irish.
11:04Neither of them could make the Dutch perish.
11:08Oh, two chances.
11:09At first it looked as if Aldridge was going to get on the end of the cross.
11:13Now we go straight away to the other end in danger with Hillhouse.
11:16Keefe trying to get into the area.
11:18Pulleys, he's got a man alongside him.
11:20This man is Vichkerp.
11:22The Irish have got back but still there are two men in there.
11:25Driven across and right across the face of goal.
11:28It'll go out of play.
11:29Well, that's end to end, isn't it?
11:31The Dutch should have scored...
11:32Sorry, the Irish should have scored from there.
11:34Aldridge was just unlucky to get on the end of it.
11:36And Quinn could have made a better attempt.
11:41A lively start to the second half.
11:49Look at this.
11:50Super ball in from Staunton.
11:52Aldridge launching himself just as a mate.
11:54Quinn should have stayed a little bit more composed.
11:58They did themselves proud in the European Championship two years ago.
12:02Here they look to do themselves proud again.
12:04Ball comes free from Van Broekelen's punch-out.
12:07They come once more on the break.
12:09There's a man wide on the right.
12:11They could be in real trouble here.
12:13Hillhouse to Hullet.
12:16They've got back well.
12:17Hullet!
12:19Almost punished them.
12:22That, of course, is the danger when you're loading everybody up
12:25and playing to the sound of the trumpets.
12:27You're always going to leave yourself vulnerable on the break.
12:29Here's Hullet cutting in.
12:30He's got options.
12:31He's gone positive.
12:32He's lucky to miss.
12:35It's a good job for the Irish.
12:36They did 2-0 and you wouldn't have fancied their chances.
12:47But they are willing to carry the attack.
12:49Holland again have to defend as Aldridge heads on to Townsend.
12:55The ball back for Houghton.
12:56Behind him is Chris Morris.
12:59Houghton takes it on inside the area.
13:02Great chances here.
13:03And the cross wasn't good enough.
13:06They prise them open beautifully.
13:08They win it back again.
13:10The spirit of the Irish is showing now.
13:13Again, they're looking for the good cross in.
13:15Once more it doesn't come.
13:17Aldridge and Quinn at the far side of the penalty area.
13:21Must feel very frustrated.
13:23Very much so.
13:24And at this moment in time,
13:25nobody's working harder in the Dutch cause than Van Basten.
13:28He's playing everywhere but as a natural centre forward.
13:33Dutch are certainly getting boxed in at the moment
13:35and it's not something they like.
13:38But we have to remind you that they look dangerous on the break
13:41and that's exactly what is on now.
13:43And it's Hullet.
13:44It's one against one and there's another man on the far side.
13:46And Hullet might try and do it all himself.
13:48Hullet took a deflection.
13:51Hillhouse was screaming for the pass.
13:54Could have won the game for them there.
13:56Bad mistake in midfield to start with by Staunton.
13:58But here's Hullet going 1v1.
14:00He's got people on both sides of him.
14:02Goes it alone.
14:04Good defending.
14:06Taken on by a right guard.
14:07It was getting forward much more.
14:10Fountas.
14:13Has to hold things up.
14:15Van Basten.
14:18Still Van Basten.
14:20Nice ball in as well.
14:21Van Basten's here.
14:22Great danger.
14:23Clipped over the top of his own crossbar this time by Morgan.
14:27Absolutely magical combination between Van Basten.
14:30Van Basten picks up the ball in the deep position.
14:33Plays it firmly into Hullet.
14:35Follows his run.
14:37Sets it back in and Kevin Moran's forced to just
14:40any old how get the thing over the top.
14:43We felt a few minutes ago Ron that
14:46they were getting a bit on top of the Irish.
14:48But the Dutch are coming back here now.
14:50Straight away with Van Basten.
14:52Who tries to trick Staunton.
14:53Gets the crossover as well.
14:55Keith putting it behind.
14:57But they do seem to just take the sting out of the Irish a bit
14:59in the last few minutes and come back into it.
15:01Very much so.
15:02Particularly when they start knocking the ball about
15:03which is their great strength.
15:04Well done.
15:05Well done.
15:06Well done.
15:07Well done.
15:08Well done.
15:09Well done.
15:10Well done.
15:11They have a great strength.
15:14This one shows.
15:15Van Basten operating as a right winger now.
15:17Cuts it back the near post.
15:18mannequin tricks
15:19Good little roll and turn from Keith.
15:20Unlucky from a tight angle.
15:33Huge kick again.
15:34It really is.
15:36He's almost going to put them under pressure.
15:37They've got it.
15:39They equalise there.
15:40And they do a little dance of joy.
15:43What a moment for the Irish, and what a moment for big Niall Quinn.
15:49Well, they always call him the mighty Quinn.
15:51Every time he scores a goal, he won't have ever scored a mightier one than this
15:55for those jubilant fans.
15:58John, a typical Irish one-two.
16:01Bonner to one of his strikers.
16:03Scrambling, fighting.
16:04Casperino on right guard, fighting.
16:06Van Alen, a ball back.
16:08But Van Broecklin will curse that if it cuts from the game.
16:13The Irish are alive again.
16:18And Niall Quinn pays off his selection.
16:21He has four marks for following in.
16:23He really had no right to be running in because that was Van Broecklin's ball all the way.
16:34Suddenly the flags are flying for the British.
16:37And for the Republic of Ireland as well.
16:49Only Niall Quinn's second international goal.
16:52One he'll never forget.
16:54The Dutch are coming again here.
16:56And Fouters can't keep the shut down.
16:59What a finish we've got up now.
17:01Very much so.
17:02We're left with a situation now where the Dutch may not qualify.
17:07These kicks of Bonner's have created a few problems.
17:12And here is Casperino.
17:13Can he turn?
17:14No, right guard behind him.
17:15But he will get the ball back for Staunton.
17:21Nice ball through inside the penalty area.
17:24Again he's done well as Casperino turns it back and it's just too far.
17:28McGrath might still get there though.
17:30The square ball.
17:31Quinn sticks out a leg.
17:32It won't get past Van Broecklin this time.
17:37That all starts a great through ball from Staunton into Casperino's path.
17:41But Quinn looks to be in great distress.
17:46And that's good to see.
17:47The ball put out by the Dutch.
17:49Allowing treatment to be administered to Niall Quinn.
17:52This is great work by Casperino.
17:54Cuts it back.
17:55Nobody can quite make the end of it.
17:56Big Paul McGrath shapes onto it.
17:58At this stage I thought he was going to blast it.
18:00But he's done the intelligent thing.
18:01Bit unlucky for Quinn.
18:02He seems to have twisted his knee in that little tangle.
18:05He's big McGrath now.
18:06He has got a dig on him.
18:12You can see how full the stadium in Palermo is tonight.
18:16Good crowd.
18:17The Irish and the Dutch have supported their teams to the hilt.
18:30And they're sure to be supporting them in the next round as well.
18:33Not much doubt about that.
18:36All that remains to be seen is where they're going.
18:43And it has got a bit farcical.
18:46The referee keeps looking at that watch of his.
18:50Seems an eternity.
18:53And the Irish substitutes are lined up alongside Jack Charlton.
18:57And Boris Setters on the touchline.
19:00They'll jump in the air with glee.
19:02When Monsieur Bertrall finally decides to put an end to all this.
19:07Jack can't wait.
19:09He's had long enough of this.
19:11He's getting a bit perturbed by it all.
19:13It really is a joke.
19:16And if the referee had any sense, and he has now,
19:18he would blow on that whistle.
19:20And it's all over.
19:22And the Republic of Ireland and Holland will both be going through.
19:27And it's all over.
19:28And it's all over.
19:29And it's all over.
19:30And it's all over.
19:31And it's all over.
19:32And it's all over.
19:33And it's all over.
19:34And it's all over.
19:35And it's all over.
19:36And it's all over.
19:37And it's all over.
19:38And it's all over.
19:39And it's all over.
19:40And it's all over.
19:41And it's all over.
19:42And it's all over.
19:43And it's all over.
19:44And it's all over.
19:45And it's all over.
19:46And it's all over.
19:47And it's all over.
19:48And it's all over.
19:49And it's all over.
19:50And it's all over.
19:51And it's all over.
19:52And it's all over.
19:53And it's all over.
19:54And it's all over.
19:55And it's all over.
19:56And it's all over.
19:57And it's all over.
19:58And it's all over.
19:59And it's all over.
20:00And it's all over.
20:01And it's all over.
20:02And it's all over.
20:03And it's all over.
20:04And it's all over.
20:05And it's all over.
20:06And it's all over.
20:07And it's all over.
20:08And it's all over.
20:09And it's all over.
20:10And it's all over.
20:11And it's all over.
20:12And it's all over.
20:13And it's all over.
20:14And it's all over.
20:15And it's all over.
20:16And it's all over.
20:17And it's all over.
20:18And it's all over.
20:19And it's all over.
20:20And it's all over.
20:21And it's all over.
20:22And it's all over.
20:23And it's all over.
20:24And it's all over.
20:25And it's all over.
20:26And it's all over.
20:27And it's all over.
20:28And it's all over.

20:55And it's all over.
20:56And it's all over.
20:57And it's all over.
20:58And it's all over.
21:00The first team drawn is Netherlands.
21:05And we will see now in which pot Netherlands is going, which is the number for Netherlands.
21:24Netherlands will have number three.
21:30And that is what you might call a good result,
21:32because it meant the Republic of Ireland obviously finished second.
21:35And if you look now at the matches to come for the Republic and England,
21:38you see the Republic now play Romania in Genoa on Monday.
21:41Had they finished third, they'd have been lucky enough to get West Germany.
21:44So they'll be delighted to finish second on that draw.
21:47And England will play Belgium in Bologna,
21:50having finished top of our group on Tuesday the 26th.
21:54Right, let's find out what they're saying now in the England camp.
21:57Bobby Robson, first of all,
21:58reflecting on what a tough proposition Egypt turned out to be.
22:02Here he is talking to Jim Rosenthal.
22:04No-one smashed them. Holland couldn't, Ireland couldn't, and we couldn't, you know.
22:08We've narrowly won a match.
22:11They were very brave opponents, and I applaud them, you know,
22:14because they had some skill on the side, and they defended very well.
22:17We were just mentally and physically a little bit tougher,
22:20and that's seen us through.
22:22We're good on free kicks, and we're always going to give them problems.
22:25And, you know, the one that Mark Wright got obviously was as well as the match.
22:29Yeah, I mean, it was a great ball in.
22:31All I had to do was, I got a little touch to it,
22:33and it seemed to hit the lad on the line and go in,
22:35but I haven't scored an international goal, so I think I'll be claiming that one.
22:38What a marvellous time to get your first goal for England.
22:41Yeah, as I said, I haven't scored for England,
22:43and I don't score that many for me club.
22:44Not as many as what I should do and everything,
22:46so it was nice to get the final touch to it.
22:48I think we were a bit cautious,
22:50and maybe we didn't believe that we...
22:52Really, we wanted to protect our 0-0,
22:56but we got confidence, and we knew that we could win it.
22:59It was caution. It wasn't lack of passion, lack of motivation.
23:02Not at all. We had all that.
23:04It was just a matter of taking it nice and easy
23:06and, as I say, waiting for the right break, which we got in the end.
23:10I can't see that any player that would go out for their country
23:13and everything can not give over 100%.
23:15The boys are full of passion and everything, full of fire and everything,
23:17and at the end of the day, as I said, they're hard to break down,
23:20but we're just glad to get the result and finish top of the group.
23:22And now you've won the group and bring on Belgium.
23:24Aye, lovely, eh?
23:26I'm glad we're staying on where we are.
23:28It's nice. Three more days in that hotel won't do us any harm.
23:31We have a longer rest period, which is vital to us.
23:33I'm a bit worried about Des Walk.
23:35He's got over on his ankle, so he might need four or five days,
23:38but it's the recovery period which is so essential.
23:41We'll go there in good heart, pick everybody up, you know, and ready for it.
23:45Well done.
23:46Bobby Robson, the current England manager.
23:48The man who could be the next England manager is, of course, Graham Taylor,
23:51and hopefully he can hear us in Rome right now.
23:53Good evening to you, Graham.
23:54Hello, Nick.
23:55Hi. What did you think of the performance tonight, then?
23:58I think the result was very, very important
24:01and it's a great credit to England that they've won this group.
24:05It's been a very, very difficult one for them.
24:08Are you surprised that they actually changed the formation
24:11after they did so well against Holland?
24:13Not really.
24:15No, I think that after the very first game against Ireland,
24:20which I think everybody recognises was a bad football league game,
24:25never mind an international one,
24:27I think they looked at Holland and the game against Egypt
24:35and they selected what they thought was right.
24:39Graham, Emlyn here.
24:41Looking at the game there,
24:44if you are going to take over as manager,
24:47which nobody has told us as yet,
24:50if you are going to take over,
24:51I thought there was a lot of good things in that game tonight.
24:54Although I didn't think it was a good performance,
24:56I thought for the new incoming manager,
24:58there was a lot of good things.
24:59Gascoigne, Wright, Parker, I thought they were super, them three.
25:03There's always positive things to look for, Emlyn, as you well know,
25:08and it's interesting seeing things and a little bit of change.
25:12I have to say that it's pleased me to see us change that little bit
25:15from how we've been playing at the back,
25:18because I think it is important that we can adapt and change accordingly,
25:23because you have to do that at this level.
25:26Graham, thanks very much for talking to us.
25:28Good to see you.
25:29Thanks a lot, Nick.
25:30Looking very brown as well, isn't he?
25:32It's a fair point, actually, what you're saying there, Emlyn,
25:34about hope for the future.
25:36Yes, I mean, I was impressed certainly with...
25:40I think what Graham was trying to get across, Nick,
25:43was that before he actually went out to Italy,
25:45we had about a week, eight, nine days here in the studios,
25:49and we were saying how static England's back four
25:52always look at international level,
25:55and we were saying why don't they bring in a sweeper
25:57and why don't they push the two full-backs on
25:59to make extra midfield players,
26:01thus pushing midfield players up to make extra forward players,
26:05and this is what happened, and it has been a revelation.
26:09Right, well, let's go back to Ireland now,
26:11find out more about that entertaining match.
26:13I thought it was a terrific match in Palermo.
26:15Let's find out what Jack Charlton and the players had to say about it.
26:18Talking to John Helm.
26:19We've known some great times in football, Kevin.
26:22Where does this one rate?
26:23Oh, it's got to be right up there, right up there at the very, very top.
26:26We always start, we look back,
26:28and everybody talks an awful lot about the game in Stuttgart
26:33when we beat England 1-0,
26:35which is a tremendous day for a country,
26:37but this, to me, is better
26:38because this means we've qualified for the next stage.
26:40At the end of the day, we never qualified, you know,
26:42against any European champion, but we have this time,
26:44and we played a magnificent game, I thought,
26:46against a Dutch team that were back to their best.
26:48It's made our world cup.
26:49You know, we came here hoping we would qualify,
26:51and now that we have, it's a tremendous feeling,
26:54and it's something very hard to sum up in words.
26:56Compared with Egypt, we are battling again.
26:58We're fighting again.
26:59It's the only thing you can do at the moment,
27:01and then you are hoping that the reform will come back again,
27:05but we haven't played very good so far,
27:09and I mean, I feel a bit sorry because of an error of myself.
27:14We kept the 1-0 lead away, although I think it was a fair result.
27:19We've achieved what we set out to do.
27:22Now we'll try and go on and win it, eh?
27:24Still unbeaten under you as captain, aren't they?
27:26Yeah, it's a kiss of death, though, isn't it, saying that?
27:29You never know. You never know.
27:31When you went one down,
27:32that required an awful lot of character to come back, surely,
27:34against a team like this.
27:36Yeah, well, I've said this week to somebody else,
27:38you can criticise our team for a lot of things,
27:40but lack of character and spirit and fight and determination
27:44is not one of them,
27:45and we showed those qualities in abundance tonight,
27:48and I think at the end of it, we got what we deserved.
27:51You know, we're not the best ballplayers in the world at the back.
27:54We're good, effective people,
27:55and when we're standing on boards,
27:56I'm always frightened that Mick McCarthy is going to miss.
28:00LAUGHTER
28:11That's great.
28:12And, of course, now playing Romania,
28:14it could have been a lot worse, couldn't it?
28:16I think they'll be pleased about that.
28:18As you say, they could easily have got West Germany,
28:21but thank goodness they have got Romania,
28:23and that will hold no fears to Jack and his lads.
28:26They'll be looking forward to it very much.
28:28Let's find out from one of the lads what they think about it.
28:31Niall Quinn, good evening to you. Well done.
28:33Thank you, Nick.
28:34Tell us, first of all, what do you make of the next round?
28:37We're just talking about Romania. Do you fancy that?
28:39Yes, well, I watched the draw along with a couple of the lads,
28:42and we were ecstatic about the draw.
28:44Obviously, we didn't want to face West Germany.
28:46We're very happy with the draw.
28:48And you must be delighted with the way you played tonight.
28:51Well, I think at last we proved that we can play football.
28:54I mean, that was one of the things that everybody said to us
28:57that we could have improved.
28:59It's nice, obviously, to get the result and to qualify,
29:02but what adds to it is, you know,
29:04that the flack that we've received up to now
29:07has been forgotten about
29:09because we played some really lovely stuff tonight.
29:11And you got the goal.
29:13Yes, Emlyn used to give me stick about not being able to score,
29:16but I've got a World Cup goal.
29:18I'm cherishing this for the rest of my life.
29:20And I think in the first place
29:22it was a relief just to be in the side, wasn't it?
29:25Yes, I haven't started many.
29:27I've been in the squad since Jack took over
29:29and I think I've started four games.
29:31And I was very happy.
29:33You know, I didn't think he'd play me.
29:35It was such a big game and I'm just pleased he did.
29:37And, you know, I'd missed a couple of chances
29:39and I was beginning to wonder whether it was my night or not.
29:42And thankfully I got the goal, you know.
29:44Well, we're delighted for you. Thanks, Niall, for joining us.
29:46Thanks, Nick. You're welcome.
29:48Thanks a lot. Thank you.
