00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Now, what's happening up in Hull on the Humber?
00:37Nothing other than the British Science Festival.
00:40It's Europe's biggest festival.
00:42It's city-wide, there are talks, lectures, everything to do with science.
00:46You'd love it. Yes. You would absolutely love it.
00:49It's completely free too, as I say, it's right through the city
00:52and all sorts of eminent people are pitching up
00:54and anybody who's got an interest should head for Hull. Brilliant.
00:58Of course, the thing is, you go to these lectures
01:00and you learn something new every time.
01:02I remember going to the Dimbleby lecture last year.
01:05Amazing, because I don't go to too many of these things,
01:08but have you been to a lecture recently where you were amazed
01:11and you learned something really new?
01:13Well, Susie and I went to the Chris Hadfield,
01:16the Canadian Astronauts' Lecture, and he was absolutely fascinating
01:20and he showed us clips and photos over the years
01:23and how the Earth has changed from those views from space.
01:26It was just absolutely brilliant.
01:28And he kind of left you absolutely awe-inspired
01:30and feeling like you've wasted your life at the same time after that.
01:33But speaking of Susie, Susie's in her own lectures.
01:36I'll be going to one of those this week.
01:38I'm sure that'll be equally as exciting.
01:40Brilliant. Our Susie's touring the country.
01:42And it's a one-woman show, is it?
01:44And it's all about words. We'll talk to her about that in a second.
01:47But in the meantime, let's introduce our contestants.
01:50Dave Ashton's back. Three good wins.
01:53Thank you, Nick.
01:54Casually won, too. 95, 105, and then, of course, you slumped.
01:58I did, yeah.
01:59But let's see how you get on today. Great player.
02:01Dave, you're joined by David O'Neill.
02:03So I've got a Dave and a David.
02:05David's a tour guide from Shank Hill, south of Dublin.
02:08Yes.
02:09On the sea there.
02:10And you take groups of visitors around the historic Kilmainham Jail.
02:14Now, Kilmainham is famous because...?
02:16Everybody thinks of it in terms of 1916, but there's a lot more going on.
02:21There's social history, the ordinary prisoners, men, women, children.
02:26Hangings, for example, that take place at the jail.
02:29Prison architecture.
02:30And we are, without a shadow of a doubt,
02:33one of the busiest national monuments in Ireland.
02:35We would have somewhere in the region of 400,000-plus visitors every year.
02:39That's amazing. I've never been.
02:40Of course, that's where the signatories to the Declaration of Independence were held.
02:45And indeed, 16 of them, I think?
02:4714 were executed there.
02:4914 were executed there, yes.
02:51Thank you. Big round of applause then for Dave and David.
02:59And Susie's over there. Susie, your tour, my word.
03:02I'm coming to see you in Cheltenham. Definitely.
03:04Oh, good. I'll get you up on stage.
03:06Oh, no, no, no. No, no, no. I'm selling the ice creams.
03:09OK.
03:10Brilliant stuff. Look forward to that.
03:12You're joined by Charlie State today, BBC Breakfast presenter and journalist.
03:16Welcome back, Charlie.

06:42and I thought they might be called a dueler.
06:44That, unfortunately, is the American spelling.
06:46It's in the dictionary, but you need two Ls for the British spelling.
06:49Sorry, Charlie. You look very disappointed.
06:51Yeah, there you go.
06:53What have you got, Susie?
06:55Just a seven, as well.

08:11Slightly differently.
08:12Eight times five is 40.
08:14Yep.
08:15Six minus two is four.
08:17It is, indeed.
08:18Add those and add the 100, and that's 144.
08:20Marvellous. 144.
08:21Well done.
08:25So, nothing in it.

08:57Welcome back.
08:58I left with the clue, the man upset her,
09:00and she wasn't fond of him after that,
09:02because, I don't know, she felt affronted.

12:18I had taser.
12:20Yep.
12:21Yep.
12:22A couple more eights, quartet and quitters.
12:26Taser's not a brand name, no?
12:28It is, but the verb, it's a bit like Google.
12:30The noun is capitalised, but the verb isn't.
12:32OK, thank you for that.
12:35All right, 25-31, David on 31,
12:38and it's David's numbers game. David?

13:45No.
13:46You mean 954?
13:47I do mean 954, cos I'm from...
13:50In that case, we're going to have a word with David.
13:54Yes, David?
13:56Ten and six, 16.

14:10Rachel, you're on. Help us get out of this.
14:13If you say ten plus nine is 19,
14:1850 minus five, 45,
14:21times those together for 855,
14:24and then six divided by three is two for 857.
14:28Well done.
14:30APPLAUSE
14:33That's the way, all right.
14:35Thank you, thank you.
14:3625 takes 36.
14:37David on 36, and we turn to Charlie.
14:40Charlie, newsman.
14:42Biggest story of the year?
14:44Maybe it's Harry and Meghan, and you were there.
14:47Yeah, one of the joys of my job is every once in a while
14:50you get to have a bird's-eye view on something a bit special
14:55that everyone would love to be at.
14:57I have a generation to say the atmosphere that day was really special,
15:00and even people who weren't terribly keen on the royals
15:03were saying the same thing.
15:05Part of, I think, the reason why people bought into this wedding so much
15:09is Prince Harry himself, who has proved himself,
15:12as the years have gone by, to have sort of real qualities,
15:15real personal skills.
15:17And two years prior to this, so we're talking about July of 2016,
15:23we went to Kensington Palace, where we were told that he was going to talk
15:28about issues around mental health.
15:30And you'll be familiar now with the Heads Together campaign,
15:33which the royals are heading up.
15:35But he gave us an interview, and during the interview,
15:38he, for the first time, referenced his thoughts about his own grieving
15:44in connection with losing his mother.
15:47And it seems odd to say so,
15:49because I've never actually said the words out loud on camera before.
15:54And what he said was, he said,
15:57everything can be OK, but for the first 28 years of my life,
16:01I never talked about it, about grief.
16:04And it was just a rather special moment.
16:07And, of course, since then, in the time since,
16:09they've done so much work around mental health issues
16:13and depression and all those things, and loss.
16:17I think it has been one of their great successes.
16:20And it really is very personally driven by him.
16:24It's a great story, isn't it, I think,
16:26of someone who's really carving a niche for a new generation of royals.
16:31Absolutely. I'll drink to that.
16:37Thank you, Charlie. Thank you indeed.
16:39Now, 25 to 36, Dave. Come, come. It's a letters game.

18:01Glassed.
18:02Isn't that hitting somebody in the face with a broken glass?
18:05Yes. I mean, it can be the adjective describing something enclosed with glass,
18:09but, yes, it can also mean hitting someone with a glass.
18:13It's not very nice. Yeah.
18:15Susie?
18:16A couple more sevens, ligated and details.
