Bristol's "best place to live is a working-class area, but it's got a vibrant energy"

  • last week
Lifestyle magazine Muddy Stilettos revealed Southville is one of the best places to live in Bristol and Somerset.

The vibrant and arty hub is located in the centre of the city, south of the River Avon.

t has become increasingly gentrified and popular with young professionals and families over the years.

Southville is home to many independent restaurants and cafes as well as the iconic Tobacco Factory and Upfest, the famous urban paint festival.

We talked to some locals to see if they agree with Muddy Stilettos verdict.

00:00Southville has been voted one of the best places to live in Bristol and Somerset by
00:04Margie Stilettos. We asked locals what their thoughts are on living in Southville.
00:11Well we live in Long Ashton which isn't very far away but we always come to North Street
00:16in this area about four or five times a week because it's got everything we need really.
00:21I think it's really nice, I mean we moved really recently so we're students but I really like the
00:26vibe of it, it's very, we've moved from Gloucester Road to down here, Gloucester Road's a lot more
00:30kind of like, it's more like urban, like this seems a lot more safer, it does, it's like family
00:37and yeah like it's more family orientated, we love the fact that the tobacco factory is so close
00:43because we're theatre students so it means that like theatre is so accessible here and
00:49there's people on campus, obviously there's an Aldi which is really affordable for us,
00:54so we're happy that it's not like somewhere where getting normal supplies is difficult.
01:01So we've got some old traditional shops here but yeah it's a vibrant area, it's very expensive
01:08if you've got like £700,000 for a house now. And what's some of your favourite areas in Southville?
01:16Yeah it's down by the park, it's just the walk over the park and over the bridge and you can
01:26either go up underneath the suspension bridge, there's so many beautiful walks here as well, you know
01:31sort of down by the docks, you know you've got everything here, also if you can walk, it's a 25
01:38minute walk to the you know railway station, you've got buses, you go down to Bedminster, you can get
01:44anywhere you know and but it's just it's a pretty good area to live in. Probably during the evening
01:52the bars and things and places to eat, that's probably my place. There's really cute florists,
01:59I love that, like I read the other day and they were like oh if you want a certain type of flower
02:03like just message me and I can pick it up for you in the morning, that's so cute. Everyone's been
02:08so friendly that we've met here so far. It's such a nice community, I could already sense it.
