Sir Keir Starmer and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni pledged cooperation on issues of migration and security during a news conference in Rome. Starmer said his talks with Meloni had helped in developing Britain's approach to tackling illegal immigration.

00:00This week thousands of migrants cross the Mediterranean to reach Italy, to enter Europe illegally.
00:29Many of them also cross the Manica to arrive in the United Kingdom.
00:33It is clearly a phenomenon that interests the entire European continent.
00:37With Prime Minister Starmer, we agree that the first thing to do is to intensify the fight against human trafficking,
00:46doing so by combining much more efforts, working for greater security cooperation.
00:55The model that the Italian government has imagined of centers to process asylum requests for immigrants
01:04who land under Italian and European jurisdiction in a foreign country
01:10is a model that has not been experienced anywhere.
01:13If it works, as I believe it works, everyone understands that it can become a turning point
01:20to address the issue of migratory flows in a different way,
01:24also for the element of deterrence that it produces compared to relying on criminal organizations.
01:51on issues like counter-terrorism.
01:53And I've never accepted, as we discussed, that we can't do the same with smuggling gangs.
01:58And now, of course, Italy has shown that we can.
