00:48less than a month to the governorship election with direct verbal assaults and
00:52insults on the throne of Benin Kingdom, the Oba of Benin. The Oba in a press statement
00:59issued on Wednesday ordered all traditional chiefs and leaders in Benin Kingdom to perform
01:03the traditional Bishusu ceremony to ward off evil ahead of the Edo governorship election.
01:10The statement signed by Chief Stanley Obamoni, the SRA of Benin indicated that the ceremonial
01:16rituals which involved waving away calamity is to be performed with certain undisclosed
01:22traditional items as the Oba demanded the custodians of the gods to implement the directive
01:27immediately. According to the statement, the Oba's directive is aimed at ensuring that the
01:33forthcoming September 21st gubernatorial election in the state is free from violence and other forms
01:40of electoral malpractices. The statement also indicated that the Oba's directive is targeted at
01:47preventing evil from Edo, especially before, during and after the forthcoming gubernatorial
01:54election in the state. The Bishusu ceremony is a traditional ritual performed by the Benin people
02:01to ward off evil and calamity from their land. By directing the chiefs to perform this ceremony,
02:08the Oba is invoking traditional powers to ensure a peaceful and orderly election,
02:13Obamoni said. He said performance of the Bishusu ceremony would involve all chiefs,
02:20Eneji, Ikau, Edeonwere, and Igi Ohen of various deities in the Benin kingdom.
02:27He said with the directive, traditional leaders in the Benin kingdom were expected to take
02:32immediate action to perform the ceremony and use their influence to ensure a peaceful election.
