00:00:12♪ There's gold in the valley, there's gold in the hill, there's gold in the river, and gold in the mill.
00:00:19So empty your caverns and empty your mills, to hold all the gold in the hills.
00:00:25I've traveled through dust, through the rain and the snow, but this is as far as I go.
00:00:31I've digged in the valley, I've digged in the hill, I've planted a river to pay my bills.
00:00:38I've built me a cavern, I've emptied my mill, to hold all the gold in the hills.
00:00:44♪♪♪
00:00:50I've built me a cavern, I've emptied my mill, to hold all the gold in the hills.
00:00:59♪♪♪
00:01:25Excuse me.
00:01:29Pardon me.
00:01:34And this is what this soldier said to the lady.
00:01:44I beg your pardon, Miss. I think you dropped this.
00:01:47Well, thanks, Misty.
00:01:51Where do you hail from, stranger?
00:01:53Boston.
00:01:54That in some foreign country?
00:01:55I'm beginning to think so.
00:01:57I want a glass of milk.
00:02:03Plain. No rum. And no commas.
00:02:14I like milk.
00:02:15He bent that dollar just like it was butter.
00:02:17Oh, it'd be a ring-tailed baboon.
00:02:19Why, they feed the cows up in that there Boston.
00:02:21Pig iron?
00:02:23Scrap.
00:02:26Everybody duck! Cash McKeever is on a tab!
00:02:32He's got the toothache again!
00:02:45Whiskey! Whiskey, you cross-eyed bar-swab!
00:02:48Whiskey for this blazing tooth of mine!
00:02:51Don't gulp it. Just roll it around in your mouth.
00:02:54Why, you interfering flower-mouth!
00:03:00Got him, boys!
00:03:02Now, listen here, McKeever.
00:03:03This is the last time you break the peace.
00:03:05Comanche Bill's got a busted jaw.
00:03:06And you broke up the Red Statue.
00:03:07Please, please, the wreck!
00:03:09Well, you know I'm not responsible when this tooth of mine is aching.
00:03:12Go ahead and hang me if you want to.
00:03:14Leastwise, I won't have no more pain.
00:03:16Who said anything about hanging?
00:03:18I'm going to pull that darn tooth of yours.
00:03:30I don't see the point of no joke.
00:03:32Well, I guess there isn't any.
00:03:34But I can fix that tooth for you if you let me have a look at it.
00:03:36Oh, a dentist, huh?
00:03:38No! I'm no dentist!
00:03:41I'm a druggist.
00:03:42And if you'll just let me put a little painkiller on it, I can...
00:03:45Painkiller?
00:03:46Yes.
00:03:47Well, why don't you quit sashaying around and fix me up?
00:03:49Well, sit down.
00:03:59Open up.
00:04:01I said open up.
00:04:03What was that?
00:04:04Well, it was partly me and partly the Sacramento Boat Whistle.
00:04:07Well, then come on, man, because I've got to catch that boat.
00:04:10Oh, I can't. I'm afraid.
00:04:11Even looking at it might hurt.
00:04:13Well, I'll have to give you something.
00:04:16Something that'll really settle your nerves.
00:04:19Now, just take a whiff of this and think of something pleasant.
00:04:23You mean like bees are singing and birds are buzzing?
00:04:27That's right.
00:04:28Oh, I hear cowbells.
00:04:46Yeah, that'll fix him up.
00:04:49He'll sleep for a while.
00:04:53Did he say sleep for a while?
00:04:55Sounded something similar.
00:05:05We'd better make a run for it, youngster.
00:05:07Nope, we got time. The Marianne always whistles her head off.
00:05:10Get folks out of the slums.
00:05:13Make way, folks. Make way.
00:05:15Thank you. Thank you.
00:05:16Make way for Miss Lacey Miller, the sweetest singer in Sacramento.
00:05:21Make way.
00:05:24People are staring, Helga, because they've never seen a bathtub before.
00:05:27Silly. Ain't worth a look, ain't they?
00:05:29Don't be so common.
00:05:31Make way, folks. Thank you.
00:05:33Make way.
00:05:37All they need is a brass band.
00:05:40Take it easy with that tub, boys. It's real porcelain.
00:05:42My, oh, my. Ain't the lady going to look pretty sitting in that?
00:05:46Any more remarks?
00:05:47You dang fool, that's Rick Dawson.
00:05:49Get out of here.
00:05:50Come on and bring the tub through, boys.
00:05:52Come on.
00:05:53See you all the way across.
00:05:54Bye.
00:05:55Don't drop it in that mud.
00:05:58Lacey, you can't sit foot in that.
00:06:00Oh, I should say not with my new slippers.
00:06:03Wait till I tear up a sidewalk.
00:06:06He knows I hate waiting.
00:06:08Take this on board, youngster.
00:06:10All ladies hate waiting.
00:06:12So they shouldn't be made to wait.
00:06:15Put me down.
00:06:16Nonsense.
00:06:17It's ankle deep.
00:06:18Look, I'm Lacey Miller.
00:06:19Nobody ever dared pick me up like this before.
00:06:21I'm happy to know you.
00:06:23My name's Craig.
00:06:24Tom Craig, lately a buster.
00:06:26Well, the sooner you get back there, the safer, stranger.
00:06:28I don't know.
00:06:30I'm beginning to like the weather.
00:06:39I don't teach you to lay hands on the lady I aim to marry.
00:06:42Oh.
00:06:43Well, in that case, I offer my sincerest apologies.
00:06:46Apologies for walloping you?
00:06:48No, for treating your bride-to-be like a package.
00:06:52What kind of lingo is this?
00:06:54Oh, he's from Boston.
00:06:56Which means I'm ignorant of the customs here.
00:06:58Back in Boston, I had to go through the customs.
00:07:00Now I have to go through the customs.
00:07:02I don't care.
00:07:03I don't care.
00:07:04I don't care.
00:07:05I don't care.
00:07:06I'm ignorant of the customs here.
00:07:07Back in Boston, it's considered good manners to carry a lady across a muddy street.
00:07:12And you had to tear up a sidewalk.
00:07:14Well, this ain't Boston.
00:07:15Don't let that worry you.
00:07:17Where is my hat?
00:07:18Here you are, mister.
00:07:19Here you are, sonny.
00:07:21Here, wait a minute.
00:07:22I'll bend it for luck.
00:07:24Hey, look at what he's doing.
00:07:26Now that's downright pretty.
00:07:28Well, if that don't beat all...
00:07:31I'll take you to your cabin, Lacey.
00:07:33Thank you, sir, for your elegant assistance.
00:07:36The pleasure was all mine.
00:07:38Oh, cut the palaver.
00:07:41Stand by your bow line.
00:07:43Raise up your gangplank.
00:07:44Here, Bill.
00:07:45Raise up your spear.
00:07:49Where are your stumps, you lazy swamps?
00:07:58Well, here I am.
00:08:00You sure are.
00:08:01How's your tooth?
00:08:02Oh, whatever you did to my tooth stopped it aching.
00:08:05Now, look, whatever I can do for you in return, I'll do.
00:08:08Wherever you go in this whole world, I'm going with you.
00:08:11Well, that's fine.
00:08:12Sounds like a nice, quiet life.
00:08:13Oh, but you don't understand.
00:08:15You see, while I haven't got a toothache, I'm as gentle as a mooing dove.
00:08:19And when I got one, I'm a raging, ferocious, long-haired sea lion.
00:08:23A-roaring for my prey.
00:08:25A-roaring?
00:08:26A-roaring!
00:08:27Well, in that case, I'll keep my painkiller handy at all times.
00:08:32Where do we sleep?
00:08:35Come on.
00:08:46I wish Britt was more polite.
00:08:48Like they are in Boston?
00:08:50His voice is so loud, and when he talks, he sounds like a cowherd.
00:08:53Oh, Boston?
00:08:54No, Britt.
00:08:55And I never saw him bend a silver dollar like that, either.
00:08:58I wouldn't think too much about that stranger, Lacey.
00:09:01Britt might not like it.
00:09:02And if Britt don't like a thing, life gets kind of untidy.
00:09:06What is it I won't like, huh?
00:09:07It's manners to knock on a lady's door. Really, it is, Britt.
00:09:11I was asking a question.
00:09:12Oh, yes, sir. Lacey was pondering about the house that you're building,
00:09:15and I said you mightn't like red carpets.
00:09:17Yeah, and I said that you'd give me anything I wanted.
00:09:19Of course I would.
00:09:21Gold carpets, if you wanted them.
00:09:23What do you say we don't wait for the house to be finished, huh?
00:09:25Let's get married right away.
00:09:26No, Britt. You promised to wait until the house was finished
00:09:29and everything the way I wanted before we tied the knot.
00:09:32I got you the bathtub, didn't I?
00:09:34Ah, that's nothing.
00:09:36I want cut glass, chandeliers, and gold doorknobs.
00:09:40Hey, Britt.
00:09:41Oh.
00:09:43I just heard Colin's on board.
00:09:45Colin.
00:09:47Here's where he gets you the gold carpets.
00:09:52Oh, it's a good thing I have quick wits, I'll say.
00:09:55Don't worry about Britt. I can twist him right around my little finger.
00:09:59Uh-huh, but someday he might bite the hand that twists him.
00:10:06Come here.
00:10:08You two wait out here.
00:10:14Hello, Colin.
00:10:15I told you, Dawson, I don't want nothing to do with you.
00:10:18You're a mighty hard man to do business with.
00:10:20Up in Sacramento, you keep so many men armed, there's no privacy.
00:10:23And you light out for Frisco without leaving a word.
00:10:26We got no business to talk about, and that's final.
00:10:29Here's $10,000.
00:10:31And here's a receipt for a half interest in your ranch.
00:10:35I'm buying in, like I said.
00:10:37That wouldn't pay for one quarter of the stock, and you know it.
00:10:40I'm warning you.
00:10:41You ain't holding me up like you did Hernandez and Markson and Treadwell.
00:10:45I'm waiting for you to sign that receipt.
00:10:46Get out of my cabin.
00:10:53What was the shot?
00:10:54Britt's a little busy in there.
00:10:55Oh, Britt.
00:10:56Someone hurt?
00:11:00Hey, wait a minute, Boston.
00:11:01I wouldn't go in there next one to be knocked down again but Britt Dawson.
00:11:04Really?
00:11:07Where do you think you're going?
00:11:08Could I be of any assistance?
00:11:09Why?
00:11:10Well, I heard the shot, and...
00:11:12Oh, you were sore bones?
00:11:13No, I'm a pharmacist.
00:11:15Druggist to you.
00:11:17Oh, a pill peddler.
00:11:18That's rich. Come on in. Have yourself a good time.
00:11:23Sit down.
00:11:27How did this happen?
00:11:29Clumsy galoot grabbed his gun up with a barrel, struck it against something, and it went off in his hand.
00:11:34That's how it happened, eh, Colin?
00:11:36Yeah.
00:11:38A fellow as careless as that oughtn't to own a gun.
00:11:41So be more careful in the future, friend.
00:11:47He's a very bad doc.
00:11:49It's only a flesh wound.
00:11:51Now tell me.
00:11:53How did it really happen?
00:11:55You hurt Dawson.
00:11:56Yeah, but somehow I don't quite believe him.
00:11:59You better.
00:12:01And not only that.
00:12:03We're going to have lace curtains on every single window.
00:12:05And red carpets on every floor.
00:12:07And two bathrooms.
00:12:09Including the one with a tub in it.
00:12:10Eh, Lacey?
00:12:13Why, Britt, you don't have to tell folks about our plumbing.
00:12:16They'll have Boston thinking we got no class in Sacramento.
00:12:19Oh, it'll be more dressy when he's joined us.
00:12:21That is, if you aim to stay.
00:12:23Oh, I aim to.
00:12:24I'm going to open a drugstore.
00:12:26Now, that's just what we need up there
00:12:28to make us a mountain out of there, folks.
00:12:30Well, they'll need it all right
00:12:31if you continue to be so quick on the draw.
00:12:33Now, how do you mean that?
00:12:35I don't see how even a clumsy galoot
00:12:37could shoot himself in his own right hand.
00:12:42Is that a polite way of calling me a liar?
00:12:44Now, Britt, he didn't call you anything.
00:12:46Don't you mix in this, Lacey.
00:12:47I asked you a question.
00:12:49Well, let's say that your version of how it happened
00:12:51shows a great deal of imagination.
00:12:52A fancy way of saying you don't believe me, huh?
00:12:54Frankly, it is.
00:12:58Now, Britt.
00:13:07You can't do this to my friend.
00:13:09Oh, no?
00:13:10No, you can't.
00:13:12Wait a minute, Boston, I'm coming with you.
00:13:19Make your choice.
00:13:21Anyone can have a bath or a drink on me.
00:13:23Here's my notion.
00:13:25We don't want that pill peddler in Sacramento.
00:13:27And if he turns up, anyone who calls himself my friend
00:13:29will run him out of town.
00:13:31Come, Lacey.
00:13:33Come on, folks, let's sweat our windpipes.
00:13:45Well, where do we go from here, pal?
00:13:48Sacramento.
00:13:50Sacramento?
00:14:02Well, what about it?
00:14:03No good, Jakes, he won't rent it.
00:14:05Well, let's sashay along to a friendlier town.
00:14:07Come on.
00:14:08I'm gonna rent a shop in Sacramento
00:14:10if I have to pay somebody into being my landlord.
00:14:13Hey, there's the fellow Dawson knocked overboard
00:14:15off to Marianne.
00:14:17Yeah?
00:14:18He dried out kind of nice, didn't he?
00:14:20Yeah.
00:14:27Good morning.
00:14:29Morning, stranger.
00:14:31Who owns the place next door?
00:14:33Well, if you come right down to it, me.
00:14:35I want to rent it.
00:14:37Open a chemist's shop.
00:14:39Certainly it won't interfere with a trade like yours.
00:14:42Your name wouldn't be Craig, would it?
00:14:45Yes.
00:14:47Why?
00:14:48Nothing.
00:14:49Good day.
00:14:50And shut the door behind you.
00:14:52What's the matter with this town?
00:14:54Why won't anybody rent me a shop?
00:14:56Word's going around.
00:14:57You won't find nobody in town
00:14:58that'll have any truck with you.
00:14:59So good day.
00:15:00Well, why not?
00:15:02I long of Dawson.
00:15:04Britt Dawson.
00:15:06What is he, king around here?
00:15:07Just about.
00:15:09Now get along quick before somebody sees you.
00:15:11All right, Drambot, keep your beard on.
00:15:13Get along.
00:15:15Another scared rabbit.
00:15:17Well, there's just one more place.
00:15:19Over by the saloon.
00:15:27This store hunting is sure dry work.
00:15:30And me feet are just a killing me.
00:15:32All right, go rest them at the bar.
00:15:40Hey, give me a beer.
00:15:41Make it long and make it wet.
00:15:45Hey, that's Lacey Miller over there, isn't it?
00:15:47What's she doing here?
00:15:48She works here, mister.
00:15:49This is Dawson's place.
00:15:53You're going to take a short journey over water,
00:15:54but you just did that from Frisco.
00:15:56That's not news.
00:15:57Well, it's in your fortune.
00:15:59Here you are next to the king of spades,
00:16:00but that's Britt, of course.
00:16:01Won't you tell me something different?
00:16:03All right, all right, here.
00:16:05Shovel them over and cut again.
00:16:07And keep your mind on your wish.
00:16:10And keep my mind off it.
00:16:12And keep my mind off it.
00:16:17One luck of any.
00:16:19The last empty shack in town belongs to Mr. Dawson's girl.
00:16:24And the saloon belongs to Dawson, too.
00:16:26I think that would be an unhealthy joint.
00:16:32No, no, not that.
00:16:34Oh, give me a whiskey.
00:16:36Make it double.
00:16:38Never mind.
00:16:41Uh-uh, there's a new man coming into your life.
00:16:43What's he look like?
00:16:44Trouble.
00:16:45How do you do, Miss Miller?
00:16:47I've never seen anything happen so fast.
00:16:49Well, if it ain't Mr. Boston.
00:16:51Surprised?
00:16:52No, I heard you were in town.
00:16:54Have you rented your store yet?
00:16:56Kind of fancy the one next door.
00:16:58Know who it belongs to?
00:17:00And you still got the nerve to ask me to rent it to you?
00:17:02Does it take nerve?
00:17:04Does it take nerve?
00:17:05Go away, Helga.
00:17:07Oh, I understand.
00:17:08You'd be the last person in the world
00:17:09to want to do anything against Mr. Dawson's wishes.
00:17:11Oh, no.
00:17:13I ain't afraid of him.
00:17:15I don't have to be afraid.
00:17:17You see, I do as I like around here, Boston.
00:17:19Would you like me for a tenant?
00:17:21Lacey, I...
00:17:23Helga, I know what I'm doing.
00:17:25Say, what would you sell there?
00:17:27Everything in the way of medicines.
00:17:29With no doctor here, it's a real necessity.
00:17:31Ought to be a gold mine.
00:17:33Say, you could charge a dollar a pill.
00:17:35Well, that's not exactly the idea.
00:17:37I'd charge a fair price and expect a fair profit.
00:17:39Oh.
00:17:40Does that spoil the plan?
00:17:42I'd give you half the profits for rent.
00:17:45Half?
00:17:46Mm-hmm.
00:17:47Oh.
00:17:48Say, that'd make us partners, wouldn't it?
00:17:50Yes.
00:17:51Partners?
00:17:53She'll be sole owner ten minutes after Britt finds out about it.
00:17:57Scared, Boston?
00:17:59I'll take a chance.
00:18:01Is it a deal?
00:18:04Sealed.
00:18:06Thanks, partner.
00:18:07Partner?
00:18:10Come on, kegs.
00:18:12We're in business.
00:18:13Oh.
00:18:24Now get out and stay out!
00:18:26We sure made it hot.
00:18:30Let's roll into the palace for a drink.
00:18:32What's going on next door?
00:18:34It's a real sign, kegs.
00:18:36You can see it a mile off.
00:18:38Hey, you!
00:18:40Hey, I wish you wouldn't holler when I'm hammering!
00:18:50A fine thing shooting at a man with nails in his mouth.
00:18:54Let's put him up.
00:18:55You get through with your little joke, you might let us in on it.
00:18:57My name's Joe Dawson.
00:18:59My brother say you could have this store.
00:19:00I didn't consult him about it.
00:19:02Nobody store keeps in this town without Britt Dawson's say so.
00:19:05Except me.
00:19:06Gonna look real nice, isn't it?
00:19:08You think so?
00:19:09Yank that sign down, chick.
00:19:10I wouldn't do that.
00:19:12Maybe you get the idea by decorating it with lead.
00:19:15That's the way we do it.
00:19:20I'll take care of it.
00:19:22I'll take care of it.
00:19:24Go play Indian someplace else.
00:19:26Say, what's going on around here?
00:19:28Oh.
00:19:30Little brother Dawson wants to wreck the shop.
00:19:32Little brother Dawson had better watch out for himself.
00:19:34I'm partners in this shop.
00:19:36You're partners?
00:19:37Yeah, so you better run along and mind your own business.
00:19:39Does Britt know about this?
00:19:41Why don't you ask him?
00:19:43I will.
00:19:47Well, what do you think?
00:19:48Oh, yeah.
00:19:49It's wonderful.
00:19:50Is this the way it's supposed to look?
00:19:51Oh, the stock isn't here yet,
00:19:53but wait till I get that front window fixed
00:19:54with the colored bottles and stuff.
00:19:55Oh, yeah.
00:19:56It'll be very pretty.
00:19:57Let's celebrate at the palace with a drink.
00:19:59Just the thing to wash down those nails I swallowed.
00:20:01A keg of beer, a keg of nails.
00:20:03It's all the same to him.
00:20:04I gotta get some work out of him.
00:20:06We'll celebrate later.
00:20:08Let's fix the sign.
00:20:22Let's go.
00:20:36Let's sing a song about a man that everyone should know
00:20:40A funny face, old-timer, known as Californian Joe
00:20:44He owns a lazy swayback mule that travels mighty slow
00:20:48The mule's a little faster than old Californian Joe
00:20:52Oh, slow, Californian Joe
00:20:56Known from the Pacific to the Texas Alamo
00:21:04There was a man beneath his hat that some folks might call hair
00:21:08He wore his beard down to his knees, but old Joe didn't care
00:21:12He went and bought a curry comb to brush his hair one day
00:21:15And when he lifted up his hat, two pigeons flew away
00:21:19Oh, slow, Californian Joe
00:21:23Known from the Pacific to the Texas Alamo
00:21:30He used to wander all around as quiet as a mouse
00:21:34But Joe was sure to be there when the drinks were on the house
00:21:38Oh, slow, Californian Joe
00:21:42Known from the Pacific to the Texas Alamo
00:21:46Oh, slow, Californian Joe
00:21:50Known from the Pacific to the Texas Alamo
00:22:06Darling, that fella aiming to read in here?
00:22:09There's no telling. He sure is a queer fish
00:22:16Who is he, anyway?
00:22:18Craig's Pharmacy, the new druggist
00:22:20Druggist? Remind me to ask him to let my aromatisse
00:22:30No monkeying with that hand
00:22:33Oh, say, Mr. Britt
00:22:36Would you buy me a little snort?
00:22:39Get out of my way, Whitey, you drunken buzzard
00:22:46Say, Britt, there he is
00:22:48Yeah, there's Craig. But have you seen the sign on his store?
00:22:50Yes, and I want to know how he and it got there after my orders
00:22:53Ask Lacey
00:22:54Lacey?
00:22:55Yep, she told me personally
00:22:56Their partner's in the store
00:22:57You know better than to lie to me, Joe
00:22:59Cut my throat if it ain't the truth, Britt
00:23:01Just dance with me
00:23:08I don't understand
00:23:09You need a mite more paint
00:23:11He started to clap, and then when I finished my song, he started to read again, just like he wasn't interested
00:23:16You'd better hurry and change
00:23:17Oh, Britt! When did you blow in?
00:23:20Get out of here, Helga
00:23:21Since when do you start giving orders around me, Britt?
00:23:23Since now. Get, Helga
00:23:25I ain't contradicting no one
00:23:27What makes you so good-tempered today?
00:23:29What is this I hear about you being partners in a drug store?
00:23:31Oh, that
00:23:32Well, are you or aren't you?
00:23:34You don't have to shout. Of course I am
00:23:37Why shouldn't I go in business if I feel like it?
00:23:40Business?
00:23:42Now, Britt, you don't have to be like that
00:23:45I had the shack standing there doing nothing, and I had a chance to make a little money out of it
00:23:50I wish I could believe this was on the level
00:23:53Maybe you will when I tell you that I get half the profits
00:23:57Huh?
00:23:58And being no drug store in town, there'll be plenty
00:24:01And you know that we can charge him a dollar a pill?
00:24:04Then you're not just doing this for his benefit
00:24:09Britt, since when did I do anything for anybody's benefit but my own?
00:24:15That's right, lady. For a minute I was forgetting
00:24:19Look, Britt, I've got to change for the next song. You'd better run along
00:24:22All right. But remember, if I catch Boston so much as giving you the eye, I'll put a slug in him
00:24:29More beer?
00:24:30No, thanks
00:24:35Good evening, Boston
00:24:37Oh, hello. How are you?
00:24:40You don't act like you recollect I had you thrown overboard
00:24:43Yes, I remember all right. How have you been since?
00:24:47How have I been?
00:24:48Yes. You know, you oughtn't to give way to those outbursts of temper
00:24:53Yes. You know, you oughtn't to give way to those outbursts of temper
00:24:57It's bad for you. Accelerates the pulse, overworks the heart, gives you indigestion
00:25:07You mean to say you're not sore at what happened?
00:25:09Why should I be? You didn't really interfere with my plans
00:25:14I'm in Sacramento and opening my drug store
00:25:19There you are
00:25:20Oh, Mr. Craig, could you recommend some rubbing oil for Tonkin's shoulder?
00:25:24I think so. Put a teaspoonful of this in a pint of boiling water and just apply it
00:25:31Don't rub it in or you'll take the skin off
00:25:33Sometimes I've wanted to do just that
00:25:35Not with anything from my shop, please
00:25:37Tonics may be tonics, but I can't get Archie to take this
00:25:40So I'll take my money back if you please
00:25:42Well, what's the matter with it, Archie?
00:25:43Don't like it
00:25:44That's too bad. I was raised on that fine old remedy
00:25:48It's a great muscle builder, too
00:25:51Gee, look at it
00:25:52Well, for lamb's sake
00:25:53We'll take it back, Ma
00:25:54Get me one, Ma. Get two
00:25:56Two?
00:25:57Yeah, I got a date to fight Archie
00:26:05What are you doing out here that's so useful?
00:26:07Just admiring your washing
00:26:10You get shirts so nice and clean
00:26:12I don't know how I ever got along without you
00:26:14That's the last cleaning and washing I'm doing for you
00:26:16How's that?
00:26:17Well, a single girl can't do for a fellow regular without people talking
00:26:20And I got my good name to consider
00:26:22People talking? Saying what?
00:26:23Oh, nothing
00:26:24Just asking if you and I are aiming to get hitched
00:26:28Well, you better get out of here quick and permanent
00:26:30Oh, I say, thanks
00:26:31Well, I think I'll get in the laundry first
00:26:34What are you doing with my gun?
00:26:35Oh, I used to be a mighty pretty shot
00:26:37Excuse me
00:26:47Thank you
00:26:49Any questions?
00:26:51Helga, be mine
00:26:53Why?
00:26:54Kegsie, this is such a surprise
00:27:00Now that you've seen the whole town, Ellen
00:27:02Yes, what do you think of our Sacramento?
00:27:04Haven't seen a man I'd sit at the same dinner table with
00:27:06Oh, naturally. The settlers are rather crude, but the...
00:27:08Good heavens, who's that?
00:27:13Oh, she's just the singer from the dance hall
00:27:15She looks like she just escaped from a bird cage
00:27:18And over there is the new drug store
00:27:21And is that by any chance the new druggist?
00:27:24I'm sure I hope you'll make a success of it, Mr. Craig
00:27:27Well, thank you, Mrs.
00:27:32Coggins is the name
00:27:33Coggins? That's a downright shame
00:27:36Settle a pretty girl with a name like that
00:27:38Somebody ought to change it for her
00:27:40Coggins is my name, young man
00:27:42Yeah
00:27:43Huh?
00:27:44Oh, sorry
00:27:49Is this the new drug store everybody in town's talking about?
00:27:52Hey, look out there!
00:27:55Look out!
00:27:57What are you trying to do, run me down?
00:28:03Think she owns the street?
00:28:05Oh, quiet, you're scaring the horse
00:28:07I feel faint
00:28:09Ellen, Ellen! She's fainted
00:28:15Ellen!
00:28:18Ellen handles horses like a man, she's never afraid
00:28:21Yes, it's very odd
00:28:23What can we do?
00:28:25Go in the back room and get some water
00:28:27Hold her
00:28:39I'm all right, it must have been a touch of the sun
00:28:42If there's not enough sun out, it's a warmer rattlesnake
00:28:50And that's how I bid goodbye to San Francisco
00:28:52Oh, so you didn't like my hometown
00:28:54Well, I didn't see the best part of it until you came to Sacramento
00:28:59Ooh, fried chicken
00:29:00Men always like fried chicken, don't they?
00:29:02It's all I need to make life perfect and complete
00:29:05That is practically all
00:29:09It certainly is a beautiful view, isn't it?
00:29:11It certainly is
00:29:13Hey, Boston
00:29:15You're wanted at the store
00:29:16The man's here from San Francisco with the medical supplies
00:29:18Why does Tom have to go?
00:29:20He won't leave them unless he checks the list
00:29:22I would pick my one day off
00:29:24It's a good thing you didn't bring anything hot, it might get cold
00:29:41Oh, will I find I'm worthy of the heavens to ascend
00:29:48Where congregations may break up and sermons have no end
00:29:57Jerusalem, my happy home, nay, let me die in your arms
00:30:06Jerusalem, my happy home, nay, never here to be
00:30:14When shall my labors have an end?
00:30:18When I my joy shall see
00:30:29Oh, Senor Hernandez, go get me a glass of punch, por favor, eh?
00:30:32Me too, Jose
00:30:36Rosita, I'm sure he'll propose to her tonight
00:30:38Oh, but Ellen won't accept, she doesn't love him
00:30:42Now what are you two saying about me?
00:30:44Oh, we were just talking about you and Mr. Craig
00:30:47Has he proposed yet?
00:30:48No, but he will before the evening's over
00:30:51He's very much in love with you, Ellen
00:30:53He will be terribly sad when you say no
00:30:55Who's saying no?
00:30:57But you don't love him
00:30:59Well, what if I don't?
00:31:00You girls are so old-fashioned
00:31:02He's good-looking and a gentleman
00:31:05With my father's backing, I can make him a big man in San Francisco
00:31:08Is the young lady present who promised me this dance?
00:31:11Oh, why, I'd forgotten all about you
00:31:15Fine
00:31:24Ellen
00:31:26I, uh, this is the first time, uh
00:31:30Are you in the mood for a very important question?
00:31:33I guess I'm in the mood
00:31:34Well, then I'm gonna ask you right here and now
00:31:38Tom, will you please go in the house and get my fan?
00:31:41Before I ask you the question?
00:31:43Yes, please, it's on the big chest in the hall
00:31:45Oh, all right
00:31:53Oh, hello
00:31:54Well, what is it this time?
00:31:56I'm looking for Tom Craig
00:31:57With some other trumped-up call to the drugstore?
00:32:00You don't fool me one bit
00:32:02Funny, I see through you too
00:32:04Throwing yourself at his head, trailing him like a bloodhound
00:32:07Now even trying to poke your nose in here
00:32:10Haven't you any pride?
00:32:12No, but at least I never pulled a fake feint on him either
00:32:16Why, you cheap-painted hussy
00:32:20Well, thank goodness that I'm not lady enough to hit anybody
00:32:27Here's your fan, Ellen
00:32:28Oh, hello, Lacey
00:32:30Who wants to see me now?
00:32:31Old man Higgins is very sick
00:32:33His little boy's down at the drugstore and won't leave until you get there
00:32:36Well, I guess I'd better go then
00:32:38Well, of course you must go, Tom
00:32:41Poor man, I hope it isn't serious
00:32:43Well, don't forget
00:32:45I'll be down at the dock tomorrow to see you off and ask that question
00:32:48Goodbye till then
00:32:50Good night, Miss Miller
00:32:52Good night
00:32:54She has a remarkably sweet disposition
00:32:57Yes, I've never met anything quite like it
00:33:02Lacey, wait a minute, Ellen
00:33:05I told you about Higgins and that's all I came for
00:33:13Here you are, Sonny
00:33:15The directions are on the label
00:33:17If he doesn't feel better in the morning, let me know
00:33:19Oh, Boston! Boston! Boston! Boston!
00:33:22Hey, what's wrong now, Cage?
00:33:24It's the Dawsons. They're on a land-grabbing tear
00:33:26And the Petersons' house is burning
00:33:28And the Liberts would drive out
00:33:30And it was only with what they stood up in
00:33:33Doesn't anybody fight back around here?
00:33:35Well, what's one man against that whole gang?
00:33:37Well, can't we get them all together?
00:33:39Hey, you better shake a leg, kid
00:33:40The last thing, they were on their way to your house
00:33:42But my pa's not able to lift a hand
00:33:44Oh, don't worry, Sonny. We'll get you some help
00:33:46Let's round up some of the neighbors and give the Dawsons a reception
00:33:49Come on, Cages
00:33:50Are you with us?
00:33:51You're darn tooting, I'm with you
00:33:59Hey!
00:34:11Tompkins! Tompkins!
00:34:13Yeah, yeah, yeah
00:34:14Oh, what in tarnation?
00:34:15The Dawsons are riding
00:34:16We're rounding up some of the neighbors
00:34:17And gonna try to stop them at the Higgins' place
00:34:19Will you come along?
00:34:20As soon as I get my pants on
00:34:21Good
00:34:22Hey, Bates!
00:34:23Who's there?
00:34:24Colin!
00:34:26What's the matter, Colin?
00:34:27Ride over to the Higgins'
00:34:28We're getting up a hot reception for the Dawsons
00:34:30Well, it's about time
00:34:31I'll be right along
00:34:33Shake a leg and don't lose any time doing it
00:34:36I'll be there
00:34:40Meet you at the Higgins' place
00:34:41Right
00:34:56You'd better hide the horses around back of the house
00:35:04Hello, Archie
00:35:05Hello, Mr. Bates
00:35:06Hello, Mrs. Higgins
00:35:07Well, how are you, boy?
00:35:08Not so good
00:35:09Hmm?
00:35:10Sure glad you got here
00:35:11You can help us get pouring to the wagon, Mr. Bates
00:35:13He had not to leave the house
00:35:14Let's take him up in the loft
00:35:16You mean up the ladder?
00:35:17Sure, take the young'uns and go on up ahead
00:35:19Right step smart, George
00:35:20We'll get him up
00:35:21Come on, mister, give me a hand
00:35:22There he is
00:35:29Fine time for me to be laid up
00:35:31Well, that's all right
00:35:32Come on, Archie
00:35:41Hey, they're here
00:35:42I can hear them
00:35:43We're entirely since Craig and the rest of them
00:35:46We're no match for the whole gang
00:35:52Higgins!
00:35:53What are we going to do?
00:35:54We stole them somewhere, eh?
00:36:03Get in there
00:36:04You're going to have a baby
00:36:06You crazy
00:36:07Come on, get out
00:36:09I'll have it
00:36:11And I ain't even married
00:36:15Higgins!
00:36:23What are you doing here?
00:36:24I might ask you the same question
00:36:26I'm looking for Higgins
00:36:27He ain't here
00:36:28Where'd he go this time of night?
00:36:29I...
00:36:30Look who just rode up
00:36:31Packing a gun, too
00:36:32Isn't that the custom in this part of the country?
00:36:35Quite a gathering here tonight, eh?
00:36:37I heard that Mr. Higgins was ill
00:36:39Not Mr.
00:36:40The missus
00:36:41Missus?
00:36:42Yes, the mister went up the river ways to...
00:36:44To get a doctor
00:36:47Don't get too close, Brett
00:36:49Might be catching
00:36:50Oh, don't be afraid of catching bad, Dawson
00:36:52She's having a baby
00:36:54Lie still, Miss Higgins
00:36:56I'll heat some rocks to put at your feet
00:36:59She been suffering much?
00:37:00Not yet
00:37:02But you can never tell about a woman like Mrs. Higgins
00:37:05She'd die before she'd even let out a whimper
00:37:07Yes, yes
00:37:09How insignificant is man when confronted with the divine mystery of birth
00:37:14And the courage of a woman like that
00:37:17I don't suppose that means anything to you
00:37:19Nobody can say Brett Dawson don't respect motherhood
00:37:23Don't worry, ma'am
00:37:24We'll wait for your old man outside
00:37:32I'll show you how I respect that mother
00:37:36How are you fast-talking son of a...
00:37:39We're in trouble
00:37:40There's a crowd coming over the hill
00:37:41Come on, Brett, we're in trouble
00:37:43Hey, we're outnumbered
00:37:44I said get out of here
00:38:13No!
00:38:26Tell them again how you stalled them, Jigs
00:38:28Well, Bates told Dawson I was gonna have a baby
00:38:32Hello, Mama
00:38:35I bet Brett and Joe are biling mad by now
00:38:38Biling at Craig anyhow
00:38:40He gets all the credit for them being three-four
00:38:43It's about time they got a dose of their own medicine
00:38:45Sure, the prescription's simple
00:38:46You take a bunch of angry men defending their homes
00:38:49Mix well and serve hot to the Dawsons
00:38:52Folks, let's drink to the cure of the Dawson disease
00:38:55And let's always make it Craig's prescription
00:39:01Something's wrong, honey
00:39:02Brett and Joe are stalking behind the drugstore
00:39:04And they ain't looking for pills
00:39:05Look, I'll run over
00:39:07You keep Boston here
00:39:08Even if you gotta hog time
00:39:15They're still inside, whooping it up
00:39:16He's gotta come out sometime
00:39:35Hello, Lacey
00:39:36Taking the air kind of late, ain't you?
00:39:38Who are you and Joe waiting for?
00:39:40Me and Joe?
00:39:41Taking the air ourselves
00:39:43With your gun drawn so you don't feel chilly, huh?
00:39:46We're waiting for your friend Craig
00:39:48He interfered with the little business we had up to the Higgins place
00:39:50But tonight his interfering days are over
00:39:52Why, he was there because the old man was sick, it was his duty
00:39:54It's no go, Lacey
00:39:55He was there and he made fools out of us
00:39:57So you better mooch out of the way of any shooting
00:39:59All right, Brett
00:40:00But I may as well warn you
00:40:02If you harm him in any way, you're out of my life for good
00:40:05Seems to me you're mighty upset about your business partner
00:40:08She's stuck on him, that's why
00:40:10You keep out of this
00:40:12Well, Lacey
00:40:13Why, sure I'm upset
00:40:14I kind of feel responsible for him
00:40:16If I hadn't wanted to make money out of the drug store, he wouldn't be here
00:40:19And if you lay a hand on him, we're through
00:40:24All right, Lacey
00:40:25You win
00:40:27You know I wouldn't do anything to lose you
00:40:29Sweet singing coyotes
00:40:32Why, Brett
00:40:34You're a real gentleman
00:40:36That being the case, allow me the honor to escort you back to the Mirror Palace
00:40:40Stylish, like they do in Boston
00:40:49Good night, ma'am
00:40:51Sweet dreams
00:40:52How's that for manners?
00:40:53Fine, Brett
00:40:54Thanks
00:41:02What's your hurry?
00:41:04Never thought you'd be hand-picked into being a softy
00:41:07Can't you see she's lying, trying to save Craig's hide?
00:41:09Of course she's lying
00:41:10She means that, about not marrying me if anything happens to him
00:41:13So this has got to be done some way she doesn't know I had a hand in it
00:41:16Let me do it, Brett
00:41:17In fact, it'd be a pleasure
00:41:18No, she'd lay to me just the same
00:41:20She's got to be a smart one
00:41:22Like the time we got the Johnsons for stealing their own cattle
00:41:26You're a smart one
00:41:27Like the time we got the Johnsons for stealing their own cattle
00:41:31Say, there's a tonic that he's been pouring down everybody
00:41:35Sure
00:41:36That whole shebang that gave us the shooting party tonight, take it
00:41:39That's right
00:41:40You wait here
00:41:53I got a notion to take a swig of this, I'm so weak-like
00:41:56You're strong enough for me, kegsy-wegsy, plenty strong
00:42:03When I get a toothache, I'm too strong for any sheriff's posse, too
00:42:08Which reminds me, Helga, I ain't fit to marry no woman
00:42:13No matter how good a shot she is
00:42:16If you have a reason, it better be good
00:42:20Well, it's a long of this tooth
00:42:23When I get a toothache, I'm a raging bull
00:42:27I shoot up joints, I throw bartenders out of windows
00:42:30I slap widows, I kick babies
00:42:33I'm a terror
00:42:34I'll bet
00:42:36I'm liable to throw you off a roof, I'm liable to cut your head off with an axe
00:42:43You see, I just can't let you marry me, Helga
00:42:48Oh, you can't
00:42:50Well, it's on account of my tooth
00:42:53You're too fine a woman for such a fate
00:42:56Just the mention of it starts it aching, the light
00:43:00Well, if that's the case, you better go in the back room and have a little nap
00:43:03And I'll finish everything out here
00:43:05Oh, that's fine of you to take it that away
00:43:07Oh, think nothing of it
00:43:21Ellen!
00:43:23Oh, I'm sorry
00:43:25Wait a minute
00:43:29Don't go on board
00:43:31Hello, everybody. Have an apple?
00:43:35If you'll excuse me, I'd like to speak to Ellen
00:43:37Senor, it is not proper without a chaperone
00:43:40Well, then we'll make it a family session
00:43:43By now, Ellen, you know that I love you
00:43:45And I want to marry you
00:43:46But Tom...
00:43:47Now, don't say this is so sudden
00:43:49You've seen this coming on for a long time
00:43:51It is correct only to make the proposal to the parent
00:43:54When she produces a parent, I'll gladly propose to him
00:43:57But right now, what do you say about it?
00:44:00I'll ask father as soon as I get to San Francisco
00:44:02While we're waiting for his consent, why don't you say yes anyway?
00:44:06Yes, anyway
00:44:09Senor, this is highly irregular
00:44:11All aboard for San Francisco!
00:44:14Ellen, hurry, you're going to miss your boat
00:44:16Estos americanos
00:44:19Estos americanos
00:44:50Pretty, isn't it?
00:44:52Oh, hello
00:44:54I saw you from the road
00:44:56Well, that's fine
00:44:59What are you doing?
00:45:00Oh, thinking
00:45:01What about?
00:45:02A man in Boston
00:45:04Oh
00:45:05He was my roommate in school
00:45:07Oh, I see
00:45:08He's a good man
00:45:09He's a good man
00:45:10He's a good man
00:45:11He's a good man
00:45:12He's a good man
00:45:13He's a good man
00:45:14He's a good man
00:45:15He's a good man
00:45:16He's a good man
00:45:17He's a good man
00:45:18He was my roommate in school
00:45:19Skinny little galoot, always talking about fate
00:45:22You know, the thing that makes you suddenly decide
00:45:25Not to take a certain train, but to take another one
00:45:28The one you missed is wrecked
00:45:30Or, maybe the one you took is wrecked
00:45:32And you'd have been safe on the other one
00:45:36Scary, isn't it, when you get to thinking about it?
00:45:38Yeah
00:45:39Particularly, when you think of how
00:45:40Little things can change your whole life
00:45:43I know what you mean
00:45:44You go along following a sort of, um, um
00:45:46How to
00:45:47Yes. Then suddenly something happens that doesn't seem to amount to anything at all at the time.
00:45:52No. But when you look back, you can trace it and say the change began right then.
00:45:57That's it. Boston, are you trying to make up your mind about something?
00:46:03Oh, no. I'm just thanking my lucky stars I did what I did six months ago.
00:46:08See, the day before I left Boston, a man offered to set me up in business, on a big scale.
00:46:14Common sense told me I should take it.
00:46:17But something else told me to go on to California like I'd planned.
00:46:21I didn't even take a day to think it over.
00:46:23I just left and traveled 3,000 miles and arrived just in time to catch a boat you were on.
00:46:30If I'd have started the day sooner or a day later, I might have missed you and the girl I'm going to marry.
00:46:39And the strangest part of it is that I didn't settle in San Francisco where she lives,
00:46:45but I picked Sacramento where she came on a visit.
00:46:49That's one for Charlie's books.
00:46:54Who's Charlie?
00:46:55The man in Boston.
00:46:58So it was serious with you and her.
00:47:01Plenty serious.
00:47:04Good luck, Boston.
00:47:16What do you want, Whitey?
00:47:18I want a drink.
00:47:19We don't sell liquor here. Roll into the Mirror Palace.
00:47:22Well, they just rolled me out of there. There's no more credit.
00:47:25Hey, what's in them bottles? Ain't that liquor?
00:47:28That's tonic waiting to be delivered to respectable folk.
00:47:31Now get yourself out of here. Go on.
00:47:36My dear.
00:48:01Oh, my tooth!
00:48:04Such a dirty trick, creeping over the innocent man in his sleep.
00:48:07March. Mustn't keep the preacher waiting.
00:48:09Preacher?
00:48:10Mm-hmm.
00:48:11Well, he won't be in now.
00:48:12Come back here!
00:48:13Yes, dear.
00:48:14The preacher is in and your tooth is out.
00:48:17And I'll be in a minute.
00:48:18You'll be in a minute.
00:48:19Oh, my tooth.
00:48:20Oh, my tooth.
00:48:21Oh, my tooth.
00:48:22Oh, my tooth.
00:48:23Oh, my tooth.
00:48:24Oh, my tooth.
00:48:25Oh, my tooth.
00:48:26Oh, my tooth.
00:48:27Oh, my tooth.
00:48:28Oh, my tooth.
00:48:29Oh, my tooth.
00:48:30The preacher is in and your tooth is out.
00:48:31So pick up those feet or my handbag might go off.
00:48:34Yes, I will.
00:48:35That's better.
00:48:36Yes, I will.
00:48:37Okay.
00:48:55Well, here's to you, Andrew.
00:49:06Want to stop in at the store?
00:49:08No, thanks.
00:49:09You can send me down to the palace.
00:49:12Tom, look.
00:49:13What's happening?
00:49:14What's the crowd for?
00:49:17Here he comes now!
00:49:18There he is!
00:49:23What's wrong here?
00:49:24Flemming!
00:49:25You got a mind of explaining to do to what's great?
00:49:27What kind of explaining is he going to do?
00:49:28Tell him what?
00:49:29He's laying dead in his store.
00:49:30He's bought McCraig's Mixture by him.
00:49:31Empty.
00:49:32That's right.
00:49:33Don't be too long explaining.
00:49:43What's going on here?
00:49:44What's the matter?
00:49:45Whitey's been murdered.
00:49:46Murdered?
00:49:47Poisoned.
00:49:48Poisoned?
00:49:49He's dead.
00:49:50Let's find out.
00:49:51He's dead, all right.
00:49:52By what means, Brookist?
00:49:58Poisoned.
00:50:00Must have been enough laudanum in that bottle to kill a mule.
00:50:03How'd it get there, Craig?
00:50:04I don't know.
00:50:05Let me through.
00:50:06Let me pass.
00:50:07Oh, quit shoving.
00:50:08This is a free show for all of us, Miss Lacey.
00:50:18Well, Craig?
00:50:19They've all been tampered with, every last one of them.
00:50:21Can you explain how it could have happened?
00:50:23Well, someone must have poured laudanum in this big bottle
00:50:25that I mix a prescription in.
00:50:26You keep laudanum in this shop?
00:50:27Of course.
00:50:28This is a drug store.
00:50:29Just a minute, folks.
00:50:30Mr. Craig has been a friend to everyone.
00:50:32Mind your own business, Eli.
00:50:37Wait, wait.
00:50:38Proceed, mates.
00:50:40You use it to mix medicine for folks?
00:50:42Yes, but only a few drops at a time.
00:50:44And then your hand slipped this time, drugist.
00:50:47Folks, I don't say this man done it intentional,
00:50:49but he made a mistake that could have killed half of this town.
00:50:53What's happened, friends?
00:50:54Look at that crowd.
00:50:55Sizable and sore.
00:51:00What's going on, neighbor?
00:51:01They're trying the druggist for pipes and whiting.
00:51:04Come on, Fred, let's get inside.
00:51:05No, better not mix in.
00:51:06It might have been my kid.
00:51:08Sounds like they'll be bringing him out in a minute.
00:51:18Get a rope, somebody.
00:51:19Get that buggy down by the big tree.
00:51:21You're not going to use my rig, Freddy Lynching.
00:51:23All right, use him, snook boy.
00:51:49Tom!
00:51:51Tom!
00:51:52Put him up there.
00:51:53Put him up on the line.
00:51:55There she is, fighting like a wildcat to save that pill pillar.
00:51:57No fighting won't save him now.
00:52:07Put him up there.
00:52:09Gold!
00:52:10Gold!
00:52:11Gold!
00:52:12Gold!
00:52:13Gold!
00:52:14Where'd you find it?
00:52:15Let me see it.
00:52:16Let me see it.
00:52:17Let me see it.
00:52:19Gold! Gold! Look at him!
00:52:21They're picking it up in chunks.
00:52:23Where did they find it?
00:52:24Well, what are you waiting for?
00:52:25Huh? Why, I'm your friend.
00:52:27So you're going to stand around here and watch me hang when you could be out grabbing yourself a rich claim.
00:52:31Hang on.
00:52:32Forget friendship, man.
00:52:34That fella's talking about gold.
00:52:36Gold that you can buy anything in the world with.
00:52:38Can't see.
00:52:39Gold!
00:52:40Gold lying around on the ground waiting for you to pick it up.
00:52:43Now go on, get out of here before everybody in California eats you to it.
00:52:46Gold! Gold! Everybody, gold!
00:52:48Look, I'm going to be the first one to stake it.
00:52:50I'm going to stake a claim right away, folks.
00:52:52Got the lead. Come on, let's go.
00:52:54Let's get gold.
00:52:55Gold, come on.
00:53:01That fella has the devil's own luck.
00:53:03Yeah, sure.
00:53:04But what are we hanging around here for?
00:53:05Let's get in on that gold grab.
00:53:07Come out of it. First he'll keep.
00:53:09You're right.
00:53:10I can come back and get him.
00:53:11With a gold mine for Lacey to dry her eyes on, she won't feel so bad.
00:53:15Let's go.
00:53:26Boy, that's as near to a funeral as I ever want to get.
00:53:28If you hadn't pulled my tooth, I could have gotten mad enough to handle that whole crowd.
00:53:32What are you doing?
00:53:33Oh, well, we're married.
00:53:34Yeah, we are.
00:53:38Ain't he wonderful?
00:53:40That's my man.
00:53:44THE END
00:54:14© BF-WATCH TV 2021
00:54:44© BF-WATCH TV 2021
00:54:50Well, what luck did you have with the bighorn that calls himself our new town marshal?
00:54:54He refused to open the case.
00:54:56So that's what he calls bringing in law and order, huh?
00:54:59Did you come right out and accuse Dawson?
00:55:02Certainly.
00:55:03But all bighorn, I'd say, ain't interested in your personal feuds.
00:55:09Well, I guess that closes up our business permanent, huh?
00:55:13Now, Brit isn't coming back and hollering to this whole town that Craig's innocent.
00:55:17No, but he's coming back, all right.
00:55:19Because I'm still walking around.
00:55:22But as far as this store goes, we might as well admit it.
00:55:25We're whipped.
00:55:28Right closed on the window.
00:55:31Cologne soap?
00:55:32We might as well finish in style.
00:55:40Lem, you and Pike take the bags of dust over to the palace safe.
00:55:42Chick and I are gonna pay a call on the pill peddler.
00:55:44Too bad Joey ain't here to see the fun.
00:55:46He's having his fun seeing that folks don't cut in on our claim.
00:55:55Closed, huh?
00:55:56Had to skip town. Ain't that a pity?
00:55:58Too bad you can't say goodbye personal.
00:56:00Let's make the closing official.
00:56:13It's our friend, Dawson.
00:56:21Hello, Lacey.
00:56:22Brit.
00:56:23Must come up British, but you're prettier than ever.
00:56:25Glad to see me, huh?
00:56:27Sure, but you don't have to squeeze the life out of me.
00:56:31And you'll be a sight gladder when you've seen what I brought you.
00:56:34Jumpin' coyotes, where did you get such large nuggets?
00:56:37From a claim up at Bogus Thunder.
00:56:39Come on, Red. Drinks on the house.
00:56:40Yes, sir.
00:56:41For everybody.
00:56:43You and me too, honey.
00:56:44To celebrate the pill peddler's departure.
00:56:47Oh, I think you're a bit previous, Brit.
00:56:50Well, well, Craig.
00:56:53I figured you were halfway to Boston, but now with your tail between your legs.
00:56:57You figured a lot of things wrong, Dawson.
00:57:10Stop it! Stop it, someone!
00:57:40Stop it!
00:58:10Stop it!
00:58:37Are you ready to talk, Dawson?
00:58:40Now you're gonna tell these people who doctored the medicine that killed poor old Whitey.
00:58:43What's going on here? Break it up, that's the idea.
00:58:45Break it up. Get him off of there.
00:58:46Don't pay any attention to him, Marshal. He's crazy.
00:58:48I bet he and his men committed murder.
00:58:50I'm not concerned with any arguments that happened before I took over the law here.
00:58:53I rule this fight broke up permanent, and I'll slam both of you in the calabouse if you don't keep away from each other.
00:58:58Not till I make him talk.
00:58:59Grab him, get him. Grab him.
00:59:02For assault, battery, ignoring, and disregarding the law,
00:59:06and pushing a United States Marshal around,
00:59:0860 days. Now march.
00:59:16What did you have to call the Marshal for?
00:59:19Tom had Britt ready to sing his song.
00:59:21Yeah.
00:59:22Come on, Red, set up those drinks I was ordering before this little squaw blew up.
00:59:26Step up, folks, and wet your windpipes.
00:59:32What's the matter, Lacey? Ain't you thirsty?
00:59:38You want to tell me a joke?
00:59:56What's the idea of throwing this back at me?
00:59:58I don't want it or anything else from you from now on.
01:00:00Why? Because I had a fight with your pill peddler?
01:00:02Oh, no. Something a little more important than that.
01:00:09Where do you think you're going?
01:00:11Anywhere from here. I'm not particular.
01:00:14Look, Lacey, I got to know the reason for this.
01:00:16The reason is the way Whitey died.
01:00:19He died because your high snootin' friend from Boston doesn't know his business.
01:00:22No. But up to now, I must admit, you had me fooled.
01:00:26I might have known that you were behind this lynching.
01:00:29You were the only person in town who had anything against him.
01:00:33Did he teach you to say this?
01:00:34No. He didn't say a word. He's much too decent.
01:00:37So let go of my arm. I want to finish packing.
01:00:41Listen here, Lacey. I don't admit monkeying with anything.
01:00:44What I can't get is why you're taking on like this.
01:00:46Fun narration. I've killed men before.
01:00:48Yeah. But shooting out in the open has something square and fair about it.
01:00:52Killing with poison is sneaky and lowdown.
01:00:56Look here, Lacey. What's come over you?
01:00:58I tell you, I had nothing to do with it.
01:01:00Oh, let's forget it and start all over again.
01:01:03You struck it awful rich.
01:01:04I can even give you those gold doorknobs you were talking about.
01:01:07Let me go, Britt. If you kept me here till doomsday, it wouldn't make any difference.
01:01:11Go to your quack pill peddler. He can have you and welcome.
01:01:34Hey, this scheme of going up to the camps is all wrong and I won't have no part of it.
01:01:37Rest your tonsils. Wear a gold and you're coming. Take this.
01:01:40Hey, why don't you use some tact?
01:01:42Let her go in there and say goodbye to him alone.
01:01:44What?
01:01:46Oh, maybe you're right.
01:01:47But it ain't going to do any good as far as she's concerned.
01:01:50He's always acted more like a hitching post than a two-legged man.
01:01:53Oh, shut up.
01:01:54Hello there, Boston.
01:01:55Why, Lacey, don't you look grand.
01:01:57Oh, it's just a little traveling outfit that Helga and I ran up.
01:02:00You going someplace?
01:02:01Sure, to the gold mines with the rest of the world.
01:02:03Thought I'd just come in and say goodbye.
01:02:05Don't tell me you're going to take gold.
01:02:07Sure I am. The easy way.
01:02:09Out of miners' pockets.
01:02:11Figured they needed entertainment right now.
01:02:13Can't sit in the back of an empty car.
01:02:15Can't sit in the back of an empty car.
01:02:17Can't sit in the back of an empty car.
01:02:19Can't sit in the back of an empty car.
01:02:21Can't sit in the back of an empty car.
01:02:23Can't sit in the back of an empty drugstore for the rest of my life.
01:02:27I'm sorry our partnership was such a failure, Lacey.
01:02:31Oh, that.
01:02:33I don't regret any of it.
01:02:36That a letter from San Francisco?
01:02:38Oh, yes. I'll be leaving soon, too.
01:02:41Ellen's coming up and we're going back together.
01:02:46Oh.
01:02:49Good luck, Boston.
01:02:50You too, Lacey.
01:02:53And if you ever get to San Francisco...
01:02:54Oh, yes. Drop in and have dinner with you and the wife.
01:02:57No thanks. I'm just hoping that I never see you again.
01:03:01Why?
01:03:03Don't you know?
01:03:24Making me shove off and leaving Boston with no one to look after him.
01:03:28Oh, he'll do fine once he's hitched to Miss Snippetypuss up the Frisco.
01:03:32Listen, you two. I don't want to hear any more talk about him.
01:03:35I want to forget that I ever set eyes on him.
01:03:37Don't ever hear his name mentioned again.
01:03:39Come on, Boston!
01:03:41Shut up!
01:03:42Quiet!
01:03:54Hey, partner!
01:03:55What do you want here, lady?
01:03:56How big a camp is this?
01:03:58Well, it's 30 shacks or so. The folks started a-sickin'.
01:04:01You all look puny as if you could do with a good meal and some sleep.
01:04:05There, get up!
01:04:06They need entertainment like a dead horse needs fly.
01:04:11What's the name of this camp?
01:04:13Brandy Gulch.
01:04:14Say, did you pass the doctor on the trail up?
01:04:16A short, stouty fellow with gray hair?
01:04:19No. Is anybody sick?
01:04:20Anybody sick?
01:04:22Half the camp's down with a fever.
01:04:49Hello there!
01:04:52Are you from Sacramento?
01:04:54Yeah.
01:04:55Well, I'm Dr. Claggett.
01:04:56Did you bring those medical supplies?
01:04:58What supplies?
01:04:59What supplies?
01:05:00Howlin' coyotes. Don't they know we've got an epidemic on our hands?
01:05:04Epidemic?
01:05:05Yes. Typhoid fever.
01:05:08And we got no drugs to treat it.
01:05:10We got no food or comforts.
01:05:13And in every camp for miles around, men are dying like flies.
01:05:17Doctor, you gotta save Carson.
01:05:19You can't leave him like this.
01:05:21Burning and raving with fever. You gotta do something.
01:05:23Mrs. Carson, what can I do? I'm helpless.
01:05:26What?
01:05:27Doc, isn't there something we can do to help?
01:05:32What do you think you could do here, Lacey Miller?
01:05:34We got enough trouble without women of your kind.
01:05:39Look, Miss Carson.
01:05:41Don't take on like that. Maybe Helga and I could help.
01:05:44Sure we'll help.
01:05:45So, will you show us where we could shake down, please?
01:05:48All right. I'll take it real kind of you, Lacey.
01:05:51Thanks, Miss Carson.
01:05:56I don't suppose there's any of those fellows down in Sacramento that give a hang about these poor devils dying up here.
01:06:01I know someone. Tom Craig, a druggist.
01:06:04Kegs, get a fast horse and white light blazers and bring him back here.
01:06:07Why don't I get a horse?
01:06:08Well, use my horse. He's a wizard.
01:06:13Come on. Come on.
01:06:15Tell him we need enough for an army.
01:06:19Hurry up, Tom.
01:06:21If I'd known all this was going on, I certainly wouldn't have come to make the trip back with you.
01:06:25You wouldn't want me to show my appreciation by leaving my stock and trade behind, would you?
01:06:30Oh, Boston.
01:06:32Oh, Boston. Oh, I'm so glad I caught you.
01:06:34They sent me.
01:06:35Carell, all the medicine you've got. Everything you've got. Hurry up.
01:06:38What on earth are you talking about?
01:06:39Oh, him. They want him up at the camps.
01:06:41There's fever. Nothing to fight it with.
01:06:43Nothing to fight it with?
01:06:44No, there's only one doc and he's working like mad.
01:06:46Well, that's terrible. Are there many cases?
01:06:48Well, all the camps have got him.
01:06:49It's so bad at Bear Claw that Lacey and Helga pitched in as nurses.
01:06:54Oh, that woman.
01:06:55Oh, come on, Ellen. I don't think Lacey started an epidemic just to see me.
01:07:00She did send you, didn't she?
01:07:02Well, I suppose you could say she had a hand in it.
01:07:05Well, it looks like I'll have to go.
01:07:07Why? Why should you risk your life for a lot of riffraff?
01:07:11Well, they're people. They need help.
01:07:14Oh, you and your high ideals. Where did they ever get you?
01:07:18Why, they're the very same people that turned against you.
01:07:21They even tried to hang you.
01:07:22Oh, well, that doesn't interest...
01:07:23Well, if it doesn't, it should.
01:07:25Well, let's just forget the whole idea, Boston.
01:07:28Don't go, Case.
01:07:30Ellen, I...
01:07:31I'm going back to San Francisco. Are you coming with me?
01:07:35I'm going to the gold camps first.
01:07:37Then don't bother to come after me.
01:07:39If and when you come back.
01:07:45I saw the same look in a rattlesnake's eye once
01:07:48when I accidentally stomped on it.
01:07:52Let's see how we're fixed for medicine.
01:07:54What you got here is only a drop in the bucket.
01:07:56The doc said he wants enough for an army.
01:07:58Well, then we'll get enough. And an army to take it.
01:08:02Thanks for your cooperation, Marshal.
01:08:04Oh, it's easy enough to get the medicine for an epidemic,
01:08:06but I don't see how you're going to get the people to walk right into the thick of it.
01:08:09Well, you have the supplies ready. I'll round up the people.
01:08:11They wouldn't even stop to listen to Gabriel's horn.
01:08:13Let alone you.
01:08:14They'll have to.
01:08:15Sometime.
01:08:31Here, Kegs. Eat that up.
01:08:33Here, Kegs. Eat that up.
01:09:00Hold it, everybody!
01:09:02Quiet down. Let's don't get in a panic.
01:09:05I got a message for you.
01:09:07I don't know whether to appeal to your good sense or your courage,
01:09:11because I don't know how much of either you have.
01:09:14What's that? What's he getting at?
01:09:16I do know you're facing something that's going to call for both good sense and courage.
01:09:23You think you're running away from the fever.
01:09:25Well, you aren't.
01:09:26Some of you already have it, and you're carrying it to others,
01:09:28the same as it was carried to you.
01:09:30Now, ain't that too bad.
01:09:32What's he trying to say? We ought to stay here and die like flies?
01:09:36No.
01:09:37Word just came through from San Francisco that they're sending us all the medical help we'll need.
01:09:42They're also sending enough supplies and medicines for the gold camps.
01:09:46And it's up to us to get them there.
01:09:48It's going to take every wagon, horse and able-bodied man we have to get them through.
01:09:52Are you out of your head? Think we're crazy?
01:09:54You asking us to go into that death trap?
01:09:57I'm not asking you anything.
01:09:59I'm just telling you how things stand, and it's up to you.
01:10:03You can stampede out of here like a lot of cattle and spread this fever into every town in California if you want to.
01:10:09Or you can stay here and get help if you're sick, and give help if you're not.
01:10:14It's in your hands, so make up your minds.
01:10:22Pioneers!
01:10:30I've got two wagons I'll donate. Somebody can drive the other one.
01:10:33Charlie, I'll drive the other one.
01:10:37Reckon I'll go with him. I ain't got no women folks to worry about.
01:10:40Me neither.
01:10:41I ain't seen a man yet can stand and tell me I'm afraid and prove it.
01:10:44Me neither.
01:10:45I reckon I'll go along. Come on.
01:10:52Dang, if I don't think I'm going with him.
01:10:54That spellbinding morse head of his.
01:10:56I'm glad you didn't.
01:10:57When did you get me, did you?
01:10:58We're going to need Craig around for a while.
01:11:00What for?
01:11:01Get the wagon train. Start it for the camp.
01:11:03Since when did you mind people dying?
01:11:05Use your head. Those folks up in the camps are rolling in gold.
01:11:09And if we corner all the medicine, we can swap it for every nugget they've dug in the last six months.
01:11:13How do you figure to grab the wagons?
01:11:15They have to go through Digger Pass, don't they?
01:11:17Well, we'll be there waiting for them.
01:11:19You know, Brett, I've got a hander to you.
01:11:21Thanks.
01:11:22But remember, I claim the pleasure of picking off Craig personal.
01:11:25Let's get going and round up the rest of the gang.
01:11:52Digger Pass is a half a day's ride.
01:11:54Good. We ought to be bear claw by nightfall.
01:11:57Live it up, boys. We're on the last lap.
01:12:03Come on, boys. Once we're through the pass, the going's easy.
01:12:09Them wagons are sure taking a long time.
01:12:11Clem, any sign of those wagons yet?
01:12:14No, not a sign of nothing except Pike.
01:12:22Well, Pike, my boy, how are things up at Bear Claw?
01:12:25Are the folks up there ready to swap all their dust for a little medicine?
01:12:28It's awful bad, Brett. Fever's got most everybody down.
01:12:31Lacy's up there.
01:12:33Lacy?
01:12:34Yeah. She and Helga got their hands full taking care of sick folks.
01:12:39Lacy's up at Bear Claw.
01:12:41What of it?
01:12:42She might get the fever. Maybe she's got it already. I've got to get to her.
01:12:45We've got a date with the wagon train.
01:12:46I've got to get Lacy out of there.
01:12:47We get the wagons first.
01:12:48You can take care of the wagons.
01:12:49Listen, Brett, I ain't taking those wagons alone while you go chasing around after Lacy.
01:12:52Have you forgotten she threw you over for the first soft-talking dude that came along?
01:12:56Why don't you get smart? She never had any use for you anyway.
01:13:00Now maybe you'll stop your yapping.
01:13:02I'm going to get Lacy and you're going to take care of those wagons.
01:13:13The wagons are coming!
01:13:15From now on, I'm giving the orders around here.
01:13:17When this job is finished, every man gets his equal share of the dust.
01:13:20Any arguments?
01:13:22Well then, get on your horses and follow me.
01:13:47We haven't got a chance here. Make a run for it.
01:14:13Let's go, men!
01:14:43Let's go!
01:15:13These teams can't keep up this pace. Pull over into that draw.
01:15:43Let's go!
01:16:13Higher there, Craig! I want those wagons!
01:16:25Come and get them!
01:16:26It sounds like the Dawson's.
01:16:29It is the Dawson's.
01:16:43Got him.
01:16:57You have enough yet, Craig?
01:17:01Our only chance is to get them out of those rocks.
01:17:03Yes, if you want any drivers left.
01:17:05Well, I guess I better go up there and have a chat with them.
01:17:09Why, they'll fill you full of lead.
01:17:10Hold your fire, Dawson!
01:17:13Why, Dawson, you're crazy!
01:17:14Let go of me.
01:17:21That morsehead, what a target for a bullseye.
01:17:23Hold it. We need him to order the train to surrender.
01:17:26I'm coming up to talk to you.
01:17:28Chuck your gun away and come on up, Craig!
01:17:38Keep him covered.
01:17:44You walked right into it, eh, Craig?
01:17:49I have a proposition to make you.
01:17:51We make the proposition.
01:17:52You order that wagon train to surrender or we shut your mouth up and you're permanent.
01:17:55And you've got five minutes to make up your mind.
01:17:57I can't understand you fellas at all.
01:18:00Most of you need what's in that wagon train as much as the people in the gold camps.
01:18:04Sure we do. It's a swap for all the gold they got.
01:18:06Oh, so that's your plan.
01:18:08Well, from the looks of you, most of you won't get that far.
01:18:11Funny you giving me five minutes.
01:18:13What kind of talk is this?
01:18:14I know the signs of the fever, Dawson.
01:18:16Look at that man's handshake.
01:18:18Look at his eyes.
01:18:20You fellas have been drinking that river water at the claim, haven't you?
01:18:24Well, that's where the fever comes from.
01:18:26And out of all the people in the camps, what makes you think you'd escape it?
01:18:29And it isn't exactly a pleasant way to die.
01:18:32Burning with fever.
01:18:34All twisted and twisted.
01:18:36Burning with fever.
01:18:37All twisted up in agony and fighting for breath.
01:18:41And frankly, I don't like the look of any of you.
01:18:44Especially you, Dawson.
01:18:46So now if you're smart, you'll call this gunfight off.
01:18:49And let me try and save you with the stuff in the wagon train.
01:18:52If it's not too late.
01:18:54We'll get all the medicine we want.
01:18:55Rush the wagon, boys!
01:19:00Now talk yourself out of this, will you?
01:19:07Joe had it coming for him.
01:19:09Get the wagons to Bearclaw.
01:19:36Up there at the red door!
01:19:44You go on up to Gospel Creek!
01:20:07Up the river to Red Dog!
01:20:10Crank on up the river!
01:20:17Crank, am I glad to see you.
01:20:19Besides drugs, did you bring food, blankets?
01:20:21We brought everything.
01:20:22Unload the wagons, men!
01:20:24First two wagons go on to Shinbone Creek!
01:20:27Doctor's a badly wounded man in this first wagon.
01:20:29Will you take a look at him?
01:20:30Sure.
01:20:31Tom!
01:20:34Tom!
01:20:36Thank heaven you're here.
01:20:38Why, Lacey.
01:20:40You look so different.
01:20:43Yes, these are my working clothes from now on.
01:20:46I hope sending for you didn't get you into any trouble.
01:20:49On the contrary.
01:20:51It got me out of it.
01:20:55Oh, uh...
01:20:56Lacey, Britt Dawson was badly wounded.
01:20:59Britt?
01:21:00He wants to see you.
01:21:03Oh, no.
01:21:05It's no good, Doc.
01:21:07I got it bad.
01:21:09And final.
01:21:11There's Lacey.
01:21:16What a deal.
01:21:18I could have had you for a nurse.
01:21:21Hold your hand.
01:21:25Now I haven't got the strength.
01:21:27Nobody go.
01:21:29Nobody go.
01:21:32I got something to say.
01:21:35Before witnesses.
01:21:39The medicine that killed Whitey.
01:21:44Eye doctors.
01:21:49Boston is no way to blame.
01:21:53Thanks, Britt.
01:22:00A house.
01:22:03With a gold doorknob.
01:22:07If you want them.
01:22:29There's gold in the valley.
01:22:31There's gold in the hill.
01:22:33There's gold in the river.
01:22:34And gold in the mill.
01:22:36So empty your cabins.
01:22:38And empty your mill.
01:22:39To hold all the gold in the hill.
01:22:42What's this?
01:22:45That's my wife taking down the washing.
01:22:52Come in, dear.
01:23:00I'm not going to do that washing all over again.
01:23:03McKeever, pick him up.
01:23:06To laundry.
01:23:08So empty your cabins.
01:23:10And empty your mill.
01:23:12To hold all the gold in the hill.
01:23:15I've traveled through south through the rain and the snow.
01:23:18But this is as far as I go.
01:23:21So empty your cabins.
01:23:23And empty your mill.
01:23:25To hold all the gold in the hill.
01:23:55The End
