00:00Friday night greetings one and all.
00:10Monique Chuzon here to recap the major events of the week just passed here and abroad in
00:16the global roundup.
00:18And as always, the country's top newsmakers, top bills, the busy work week, leading his
00:22team in government and spearheading government's love to the country's poor, indigents and
00:27marginalized sectors.
00:29On Tuesday, the president paid a visit to the country's leading childcare and treatment
00:34center for kids afflicted with a dread cancer illness located in Quezon City.
00:40He saw for himself the ongoing construction of the 20-story Legacy Center of the Philippine
00:46Children's Medical Center for Advanced Pediatric Specialty Care and the empowerment of childhood
00:51cancer awareness throughout the nation.
00:55Likewise, he touted the newly installed diagnostic machines and state-of-the-art instrumentation
01:00and equipment that are key to early detection and forked over 150 million pesos more for
01:07facilities and equipment upgrade.
01:11In his speech, he hailed the men and women physicians and specialists of the PCMC and
01:16extended his heartfelt gratitude in their commitment and dedication in helping the kids
01:22battle the debilitating disease and for showing all what it truly means to not give up.
01:29On Wednesday, in continuance of sharing and spreading of lifeness and lifesavers, the
01:35president headed to his roots in Neck of the Woods, where he turned over 69 patient transport
01:40vehicles or ambulances to the provincial governments of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and
01:47Pangasinan in a ceremony in Pauay City, Ilocos Norte.
01:52With the turnover, the region's constituents can expect enhanced accessibility to health
01:57care and improved disaster response capabilities.
02:00Yesterday, the president took his response and relief team to a nearby coastal city in
02:07the National Capital Region to hand out financial and relief assistance, from the Presidential
02:12Assistance to Farmers, Fisherfolk and Families Program.
02:16The livelihood of the mostly fisherfolk community was hit hard by the oil spill off of Limay,
02:21Bataan, that drifted to the fishing grounds of Manila Bay, covering the Camanava region.
02:29Later in the afternoon, the president went to the Agrarian Reform Office headquarters
02:34in Quezon City to hand out a 1,100 certificates of condemnation and mortgage release papers,
02:413,000 Bulacan farmer beneficiaries and 287 certificates of land ownership awards to
02:48farmer recipients from Nasugbu, Batangas.
02:54Capping his busy workday yesterday, the president shed off his formal and work get-up for a
02:59hoodie pullover, together with his wife and first lady, for last night's meet-and-greet
03:04with the Philippine delegation to the just-concluded 2024 Paris Paralympiad.
03:11He, the first lady and children handed out a million pesos to all athletes in the Philippine
03:15team to celebrate the country's successful campaign in the 2024 Paris Paralympics in
03:21last night's meet-and-greet in Malacañang.
03:28And at this juncture, let's hear from VOA's Chris Casquejo for the Asia Weekly Report.
03:41Vietnamese Americans weigh in on the immigration debate before the U.S. election.
03:46Welcome to VOA Asia Weekly, I'm Chris Casquejo in Washington.
03:49That story is just ahead, but first, making headlines.
03:53Hundreds of junior doctors in India's West Bengal state ignored a court order to return
03:58to work.
03:59Instead, they staged an overnight sit-in Wednesday to demand justice for a female colleague who
04:05was raped and murdered.
04:07The doctors want better security at hospitals.
04:10Vietnamese President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. says powerful pastor Apollo Kibuloy will face
04:15sex trafficking charges in Manila before any possible extradition to the United States
04:20on similar charges.
04:22Kibuloy turned himself in on Sunday.
04:25Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company says it has restarted trial removal of nuclear
04:31fuel debris from the disabled Fukushima Daiichi plant.
04:35The preparatory work was suspended in August because of an error installing the extraction
04:39equipment.
04:40The debris consists of nuclear fuel along with parts of the plant's infrastructure and
04:45is estimated to weigh around 880 tons.
04:48Pope Francis arrived in Singapore on Wednesday afternoon for the final leg of his 12-day
04:53four-country tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania.
04:57Senior officials greeted him at the airport along with four children wearing national
05:00costumes.
05:01The Vatican says Singapore counts about 210,000 Catholics among its nearly 6 million people.
05:08Their bodies have been recovered after a flash flood swept away an entire village in
05:12northern Vietnam, killing 30 people and leaving dozens missing, as deaths nationwide from
05:18a typhoon and its aftermath climbed to 199 on Thursday.
05:23More than 1.2 million Vietnamese immigrants live in the United States, many arriving after
05:28the Vietnam War.
05:30Most recently, a new wave of migration has sparked debate in the Vietnamese American
05:34community and has become one of the main talking points this election season.
05:40VOA's Elizabeth Lee spoke with voters in Texas, the state with the second largest Vietnamese
05:45immigrant population in the U.S.
05:49Hong Pham's life in Vietnam versus the United States is like day and night.
05:56Life was very hard back then.
05:58I earned a living as a pedicab driver traveling between towns in southern Vietnam.
06:04When communists took over Saigon in 1975, Pham was sent to a re-education camp for serving
06:10in the South Vietnamese military.
06:13He eventually made his way to the U.S. on a humanitarian program.
06:17But now a wave of undocumented Vietnamese people is aiming to enter the U.S. through
06:21its southern border.
06:23The number caught by U.S. Customs and Border Protection jumped from just under 300 in 2022
06:29to more than 3,000 in 2023.
06:32CBP logged more than 3,200 so far this year.
06:36Attorney Shannon Pham is in touch with some of them.
06:39If people are not quite educated and they just got fed all these false stories about
06:45how easy it is, they play with their own life.
06:49Pham says many migrants pay tens of thousands of dollars to traffickers to make the dangerous
06:54trip from Vietnam to China, then Europe, South America, and then to the U.S.
07:01Immigration has become a hotly debated issue in this year's U.S. presidential race.
07:06I don't think there's disagreement on the fact that there are problems with our immigration
07:10system.
07:11The debate is really about what to do about it.
07:14The Trump administration wants to reduce the numbers.
07:17The Democratic administration wants to reduce, but really better regulate.
07:22Those who flee communism have a legitimate reason to be in the U.S.
07:26I'm not in favor of granting asylum to those who come here illegally because of economic
07:31reasons.
07:32While Pham's views echo those of the older Republicans in the Vietnamese community, some
07:36younger Vietnamese Americans who were born in the U.S. don't share them.
07:41My mom is more conservative.
07:42She's one of those people that wants people to come over here legally, and I get that.
07:46She is overlooking the fact that everybody just wants to come here and have a better
07:51life.
07:52The migrants who make it here live in limbo, hoping to find work and waiting to see whether
07:57the next president will let them stay.

08:08I'm Chris Cascajo.
08:09Finally, Cuba, the birthplace of salsa and many other rhythms that conquered the world,
08:15has surrendered to a K-pop invasion.
08:18Dedicated fans gather in Havana almost every weekend to show their moves to K-pop.
08:22Earlier this year, Cuba and South Korea re-established diplomatic relations.
08:27Thanks for watching VOA Asia Weekly.
08:38And that's all she wrote for the week in review.
08:41Join us again next Friday for the next weekly recap of the major events here and abroad.
08:47Always make it a habit to stay connected by catching the news right here.
08:51This is Monique Tuzan wishing you all an eventful weekend ahead, and thank you for watching
08:55The Global Roundup.
