The Great British high street has had a difficult few years, between the coronavirus pandemic and the rise of online shopping, but suggestions that the NHS could take over some empty buildings might offer a glimmer of hope to both the health service, and the life of our streets.

00:00Hi I'm Theo with Manchester World and today I'm out in the streets of Manchester asking people
00:03about our high streets and the high streets have struggled in recent years with the move towards
00:06online shopping and the coronavirus pandemic so we want to know whether people have ideas
00:10to encourage more independent businesses to move out to high streets or whether they think that
00:14it would be a good idea to allow the NHS to rent some of those buildings out for their own use.
00:18Obviously the NHS is like the core part of the UK, it's very important and if it's going to
00:23benefit the high streets and also for the NHS then that's like a good thing.
00:27It might work in some places, I do think that maybe what could help would be a remission of
00:35business rates to encourage people to actually set up in those shops.
00:40But I know people that have had like their own small businesses and because of just like the
00:44increasing like cost of living over the past few years like they've had to shut down and
00:48like they've missed out on so many opportunities.
00:50I really don't have any ideas it's just sad to see businesses going under
00:55and the decline of the high street. I've got no ideas unfortunately.
