00:00So Niners played without Christian. They played with pieces of Brandon
00:04Iuke scored 32 eight straight drives, but six of them were field goals. So
00:11And as we move into a new season as anybody sort of adjusted their thinking in terms of that age old
00:16Who's the most important 49er? And yes, we're jumping off at a baseline of they're all good
00:23There no one's diminishing anyone and yes
00:27The Niners are a lesser team immediately of any of these top players
00:31Leave the field from Brandon to Debo to George to Christian to Brock
00:35To Trent to Fred to Nick and by the way, it could keep going
00:39you know to me we haven't even brought up the likes of Charverius Ward and and
00:44And you know who fun go when he gets back and there's all kinds of important pieces out there
00:49Um, Ryan and Lafayette here on Willie and Debbie. Hi Ryan. What's up?
00:55Hey guys, how's it going? Good
00:59Good I just wanted to add a little bit. First of all answer the question. I think it's Brock Purdy
01:03I think I think your leader and you calm in the pocket. He brings a sense of serenity
01:07I almost want to say to the team
01:09But I think one of the things that some of the people that are not feeling so hot on him
01:13There's like the tracks from he doesn't really play with a lot of excitement with a lot of wow
01:19Factor, you know what? I mean? I think that people watch him play and he's I mean boring
01:24It's not the right word, but just kind of this calm consistency where it doesn't really have a lot of those explosive
01:29Oh my god, did you see that moment?
01:32But they're just consistently good and they've been consistently good since he's taken the wheel Ryan just for our frame of reference
01:39Give us some quarterbacks who do
01:42Play with that when you look is that you know
01:44You watch Patrick real homes make a back behind the back toss to Kelsey you go your jaw drops you go
01:50Oh my god, do you see that? It's moments like that where it's just something
01:55almost crazy
01:56And I think he doesn't make those crazy decisions to the a doesn't have to and he doesn't put himself in crazy situations
02:01I mean, I totally get the vibe you're putting out there Ryan
02:04Thank you
02:04But I also like the behind the back passes from Patrick are not what makes Patrick Patrick
02:09Like that happens twice a year and I don't even know if it's complete and you know sidearm round the back
02:16whatever they're doing the dip see do or with their huddle or whatever they're doing out there and
02:22Patrick's just great. I understand the mobility factor like Lamar Jackson is really exciting. Josh Allen is really exciting
02:29I don't know if y'all got a chance to watch Jaden Daniels play football last week
02:33It's kind of exciting like he doesn't yet too exciting. Well, he doesn't yet go through a lot of progressions
02:38but if he does he is going to be
02:42Fantastic, like he's got a real presence about him
02:44And obviously he's very mobile fast and and sees the field really well, so I I get that aspect of it
02:52Here's what's confusing to me and I'm not here to tell you Brock is some like Oh Wow factor exciting player to watch
02:59But the whole draft ism thing and the conversation surrounding Brock
03:05Often to me leads to people
03:08ignoring things that he does do
03:11like Brock well Brock doesn't run yeah, he does I
03:16Like one of the most important first downs of the year came in the playoffs last year on a total breakdown scramble
03:24You know the famous not this week's IU drop
03:27Last year's IU drop sure the the famous play against Seattle where he absolutely went crazy
03:32and then went to one side of the field then went back to the other side of the field and then on the run
03:37delivers a dime in the corner of the end zone like
03:40Maybe it doesn't happen a lot
03:42But I don't think Brock is just like like Jimmy was kind of
03:47Boring for sure that like eight throws in the NFC title game
03:52Will you be hard-pressed to find any quarterback now in the NFL who is quote boring?
03:57You have guys who are more efficient and Brock Purdy's very efficient
04:01He doesn't do a lot of things that make you think oh my god
04:04This guy is an unbelievably elite athlete
04:06But what he does is make the ordinary play almost every time and he makes some special plays
04:13And I was watching the Minnesota game from last year back Brock Purdy made four or five throws
04:1915 or 20 yards down the field that were straight rips a couple to IU
04:24George Kittle heated up in the second half and the longest run of the game was a Brock Purdy 17 yard scramble
04:30That helped them eventually cash in and get points
04:33So you're right about the the mobility when he wants to run when he needs to run
04:38He's gonna do it, and he's gonna get the first down was Tom boring Tom Brady. Yeah, it may be
04:44I mean it was boring that they always won
04:46But you know and Tom would just he would kind of wiggle wobble back in the pocket
04:52And then the rush would come in and every single time before they got to him
04:56He would throw some
04:58off-speed Greg Maddux fastball right to a guy and you know Gronk for 14 or Moss for 36
05:06But whoever it was Edelman and all the rest of the little fellas, so maybe he was boring
05:11It was boring that he was always that good. I don't think it was boring for Patriots fans. No sir at all no sir
05:16I don't know what quarterback you would look at now in the league and say I mean this Kirk is boring cousins boring
05:23I'm just trying to think like I'm just asking yeah, because I'm with you like I don't I don't get bored watching football
05:30And if no, but it's Kirk cousins boring
05:35Who else
05:37Daniel Jones is boring, but that's more like frustrating. Well. Yeah, like Bryce young. He's just terrible. He can't see that poor kid
05:45Yeah, well, I mean who could have seen that coming you draft a quarterback at 510 exactly, but he can't see
05:53Yeah, I can't see over the people
05:55I don't know if you know this but offensive linemen and defensive linemen or gargantuan human beings
06:01Yeah, Armstead is 6-8 and DeForest Buckner 6-7 just a couple of the alums here Bryce young is I mean
06:08I don't know how Kyler Murray's sort of kind of makes it work although
06:12I'm not even a hundred percent sure that he's good, but he's so dynamic with not boring. You're not boring
06:18But Bryce young can't see yeah, well and who could have seen that coming, Carolina
06:23just
06:24Anyway for me, there's not boring. It's it's good or bad
06:27Brock is good. He's a system QB
06:30But that is a big time compliment
06:33And I would say that to Alex Smith, and I've said it to him before when we've interviewed him the game manager label
06:38That's a compliment because if you're a good game manager
06:42You're managing to win games, and that's what the quarterback is supposed to do
06:46Let's go to Tom in the city hi Tom. Thanks for calling. What's up?
06:50Hey guys, I just want to say man. I listen to you guys all the time
06:53I just want to shout out you guys guys do a great job. Keep me entertained on the way home
06:58But I just wanted to say man if we're gonna talk about stats, and we really need to talk about the interceptions
07:05You know I used to give Jimmy about two or three interceptions a game
07:08And that's not really what my expectation is the property no property comes out there and balls. He protects the ball
07:14He moves it down the field and he does this thing
07:18You know I always think of it like this if we're talking about
07:22Quarterbacks, you know would Joe Montana be the goat without Bill Walsh. You know what is is is
07:29Jimmy G or Brock Purdy as good as they as they were without
07:34Kyle Shanahan
07:36You know that's just my two cents on it in there. What do you guys think yeah, Tom?
07:41You're like
07:42Santa your questions are leading
07:44I think there are more statements than questions
07:46And I like agree with you, but when you say like would Joe Montana be the goat without Bill do it the other way, too
07:52Would Bill be the goat without Joe?
07:56Probably not probably not you know I mean would Bill Belichick be the goat without Tom
08:01Yeah, that's that's a hard. No for me, and I think absolutely I think the world of Bill
08:06But that that's what I'm getting out
08:08There have been other high-level offensive minds who didn't win multiple Super Bowls all right
08:14Let's go here, then let me ask it this way
08:17And and it's early because Brock Purdy is not a Super Bowl winning quarterback yet, and he is only
08:24Coming up on what I know it's his third year
08:26But essentially hasn't even played two full years as a starting quarterback in the NFL
08:32Who is the other because if Shanahan?
08:35Gets the credit and we've gotten plenty of you on the Xfinity mobile text line who have sort of answered our question that way
08:42Will we go who's the most important player on the 49ers now?
08:45And we're listing players and everybody's like dude you left out the most important one, and it's Kyle Shanahan exactly all right
08:53Who's the other?
08:54great coach in
08:57the NFL who won Super Bowls and
09:00The quarterback was just along for the ride
09:05That's interesting interesting way to put it, and you know you could look at Sean McVeigh Matthew Stafford
09:11Yeah, Matthew Stafford like right. He was a big
09:15Numbers guy in Detroit, but he never won until he got to McVeigh, and I think that was more of a byproduct of an aggressive
09:22Trade season and free agency where they brought in like what seven or eight high-priced guys for the year
09:27And and they want it so I wouldn't say that Stafford was fully along for the ride
09:32But he had done nothing before he got to McVeigh mm-hmm other than that you'd have to go to the the quarterbacks that we always
09:39disparage Brad Johnson
09:41Friend of the program right, but those were all Trent Dilfer those are all considered one-offs of course like they happen one time
09:48Right and and and obviously the Shanahan at this point it has happened to no times
09:53Drew Brees got the one with Sean Payton
09:55But I you know drew Brees again very good quarterback throughout his career
09:59And then he got Sean Payton, and they won right so was he dragged along that seems a little unfair to a guy
10:06Who's going to the Hall of Fame?
10:07I mean those those and the other one-offs the Flacco the Brad Johnson the Trent Dilfer
10:12Like I'd argue even though the Niners haven't gotten over the top you never saw those guys
10:18Oversee even the coaches didn't oversee a five to six year period where you were dancing around in the Final Four almost every year
10:26Yeah, that didn't happen that didn't happen with Gruden in Tampa Bay
10:29No, um you know Harbaugh is an interesting one with the Ravens because he's now kind of been around the block
10:36He's great coach. He's a great coach. He's been around the block now with multiple different people
10:42But you know again. Yeah, Flacco. That was a that was a one-timer
10:46Baltimore didn't even want to pay Joe Flacco going into that year
10:49Yeah, where they ended up winning a Super Bowl Harbaugh has won. Yeah, I was one your point
10:53Yeah, and you know the other coaches
10:56It's very few coaches who have danced around it as much as Kyle and not gotten one
11:00I believe he's the the poster child of course and his quarterback got an absolute truckload of credit one of the all-time greats and
11:08And maybe the closest thing to it right now would be Mike Tomlin who seems to go to the playoffs every year
11:14But doesn't have any good players on offense I mean so that's incredible in and of itself, but that's like
11:23Scraping in at a nine-and-eight wild card and back when Tomlin did win a Super Bowl
11:28Do you hear anybody be like well Roethlisberger's just riding on Tomlin's coat?
11:33Nobody said that
11:35Like nobody's ever done that before well that was his second year as a head coach that too
11:40So we're still getting to know him had he gone on to have future success
11:45He might have gotten more of the lion's share of that one than Big Ben does and the rest of the great Steelers that they
11:50Had but it's testimony to what one can do for you because Tomlin won that back in
11:562008 and here we are 16 years later, and yeah, they go nine and eight every year
12:01They never have a losing record, but they have made a lot of noise since then and he's untouchable and here we go again
12:07He's want to know he has more wins this year than touchdowns
12:12That's classic. Yeah, I believe you. Yeah, there was a six field goal win right unbelievable
12:17This is what they do every year. It doesn't matter the scenario. Let's get two new quarterbacks
12:23Let's have a bunch of hijinks going on that week
12:26Russell Wilson's our starter just kidding Justin Fields our starter
12:29We're gonna go on score no touchdowns and cover the spread winner. It's just incredible
12:35Absolutely incredible you know that one if you wanted to have this conversation in Pittsburgh. I think your answer might be TJ
12:42Yeah, like who's the most important Steeler probably he won that game
12:47Yeah, make her cousins look hurt, and that's the way they go about doing it
12:52It's you know I wish the San Francisco Giants took that same approach to pitching and defense
12:56But that's one for another day, and I think that the Shanahan identity is
13:02So strong that yes Brock Purdy is very important
13:05But I do think it's the scheme and the offensive line and what they're able to do
13:09To make it so Brock Purdy doesn't have to go out there and carry them
13:13That's why I think Shanahan deserves more credit than maybe anybody else
13:18Well by the way and now our conversation heads sort of like to the next step up on the staircase
13:24That's what the one thing I've never understood
13:26When Ka Shanahan has such a hard time with certain media members with certain portion of the fanbase
13:34Kyle Shanahan has such a hard time and takes a lot of criticism
13:39Yet I find just as many people have this point that we're talking about right now
13:43And that's why my brain gets yanked out of its head and spills all over the ground because it's like wait a minute
13:50You're gonna tell Kyle Shanahan is apparently the only coach in the NFL
13:54Where his team can compete for a Super Bowl without a good quarterback or without an important quarterback or without an elite?
14:02Quarterback or whatever he can do that
14:05Yet you still find a way to be like this guy's overriding in the choker. He's arrogant like white right someone help me understand
14:13Which it is because if Brock Purdy is just a dude and there is evidence because Jimmy Garoppolo
14:19I don't even know if he was a dude
14:21You know what I mean, and you still went to a Super Bowl so if all of that is true
14:26How are we not kissing the ground that Kyle walks on?
14:29Nobody else can do that
14:32I wonder if people have those similar those double views that you were just laying out if one person believes both those things
14:38Brock Purdy he's just a system guy, but Kyle Shanahan
14:42He's overrated is there any one individual that has both of those beliefs probably is those two things run?
14:49Anathema or counter. Thank you to one another because if Brock is just a system guy
14:55Then the system is pretty kick-ass because he is what 18 and 5 as a starter in this
15:01System and if Brock Purdy is amazing and Kyle Shanahan's overrated then okay Brock Purdy's doing this despite
15:08Kyle Shanahan, I just that's a hard one for me that
15:13Hard to navigate both of those parallel beliefs Wow you know it's why
15:19It's why I hold quite frankly both of them in in such high regard
15:24Because there is tucked into all of this the thing that that that I sort of downplayed does have some truth to it
15:30I just want to see it go both ways and that is to say that like
15:35Two really good people at their jobs have found each other and that elevates the whole thing
15:41To a level that that we haven't seen before and I know that nobody wants to acknowledge that until you win the last game
15:48But I do think that's where we're at like I know that it's like well Jimmy lost the Super Bowl and Brock lost the Super Bowl
15:55So they're the same thing if you want to look at it through the lens of the Super Bowl only go right ahead
15:59That's fine. I don't see it that way. You know what I mean like I was at a party on Monday night
16:04So were you where you're just looking at this thing going my god?
16:08Like this and that team's supposed to acquire half of Brandon Iuke
16:14Christian McCaffrey and Dre Greenlaw right my god like
16:19They're they're overwhelming
16:21How good they are they're very good overwhelming how good they are
16:26Unfortunately, it's September and it's not late January because that's what I think is
16:32One of my favorite things about being a football fan is the roller coaster that every team is going to go on even Carolina
16:39They're gonna probably have a game or two or they win and that boy. We're seeing a bright spot
16:44They'll be brighter days ahead Carolina was at the kiddie park, but anyway
16:48No, you're right
16:48but the ups and downs are not gonna be as high as with the 49ers because last year's a good example where
16:54You're humming at five and oh you lose three in a row and it's like oh boy
16:57Not that we all were giving up, but it was all of a sudden that bubble got burst
17:01So no, they'll be they'll be though at minimum. They'll be weekends where we come in there on Monday and be like
17:08WTF for sure how was that and last year against, Minnesota was one of those weekends and it was sure
17:14you know it was Debo got hurt early and Christian had the oblique issue and Trent didn't play and
17:20You look tired and flat and your defense you could tell that something was up
17:25Because they were not vibing with the coordinator. You said you what you went back and watched the whole game today
17:31Yeah, you watched the whole game early drop-off at the daycare. Don't tell the wife. I think she knows yeah with the words out
17:37Yeah, that's the story for another day and so I went home
17:40I had time and so I'm like, you know what I want to do a little tape run through some tape here, Minnesota
17:45So what's the whole thing I watched a condensed version, but I watched a good 45 minutes of it
17:50Okay, skip through some yeah a flag and we're gonna huddle and I love the refs as much as anybody
17:55But I saw that show already watch that part in slow-mo sometimes
17:59Yeah
17:59if I have free time look at him when he does this holding call because you can see that he sees something and then you
18:04Go to the pocket and you grab the yellow hanky
18:06I know you got throw it up now unless you're in the backfield then you throw it laterally
18:11So what'd you see I saw a defense that didn't know what they were doing and
18:16We talked about matching the rush with the secondary. That was a great example of them not doing that
18:20I saw the zero blitz that we all talked about on that
18:24The big play at the end of the first half and Charverius Ward has a chance to pick it and he does it it's more
18:30Than a chance. Well, he got his hands on it. The ball is in his bread basket. I go down as a drop
18:34Yeah, maybe that play the zero blitz call which ultimately led to Steve Wilkes is firing
18:40McCaffrey with a fumble Brock with a bad giveaway, but in general, I thought the Niners on balance were the better team that day
18:48But you had a moody miss field goal. You had a red zone fumble
18:52You had two bad Brock picks and you still only lost by five speaking of moody
18:57And maybe this is because I was in the building did Kyle say that one of his field goals hit the bar
19:03Did one of his field goals hit the bar on now on Monday night?
19:07Yep, yeah, it hit off the upright and then went in still left up right now really inside
19:12Sitting there at the stadium from a side view. They all looked fine to me
19:16Yeah, got one of them was that close would have been to your right and on the up the upright
19:22That was the furthest one away
19:23Cuz I just see the kid go up and I sort of like look at the fans behind
19:28The goalpost to give me an idea like is it good? Is it wide? Is it in?
19:33So one of them Nick the other bar, yeah, I don't remember which one yeah, it's not a clang even that's scary more than Nick
19:39It was a clang. It was a clang. It was a clang to the right like a 45 degree clang. So make that bong sound
19:47Totally, maybe Shanahan should have went for it on the fourth down
19:50You know make it a b-plus for someone who had moody
19:55Outscore Aaron Rodgers by 18 points to win a fantasy game by a half a point
19:59I needed every single one of them Jake Moody's. Yeah, you did. I needed all of them
