00:00140 Ukrainian drones attacked multiple Russian regions overnight, Russia reports.
00:11The European Commission says Hungary's threat to bus migrants to Brussels are unacceptable.
00:21Vestager triumphant. Commission wins important cases against Apple and Google.
00:30Pope Francis has called for the protection of young people during his visit to Timor-Leste.
00:42The Israeli army launched a deadly strike on a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza
00:48on Tuesday. At least 40 people died, with scores wounded, according to the Hamas-run
00:53health ministry.
00:55The EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, blasted Israel over its actions in Gaza, describing
01:01the city's dire situation as a human-made tragedy.
01:05And the European Union will continue supporting the Palestinians, but at the same time knowing
01:09that we have to look for a political solution. Because to feed someone with a dinner tonight
01:16in order to be killed tomorrow is not exactly the solution.
01:22Borrell delivered the blistering remarks while visiting Egypt's Rafah crossing and
01:27threatened sanctions over settlements in the occupied West Bank.
01:32Not only these two ministers, but also some agencies, some institutions, which we believe
01:41are responsible for the illegal expansion of colonies in the West Bank, which are also
01:47being proposed as sanctions.
01:49The war has plunged the Gaza Strip into a humanitarian crisis. This is due to ongoing
01:54fighting, Israeli restrictions and the breakdown of law and order.
02:01Over 140 Ukrainian drones targeted multiple Russian regions early Tuesday, killing at
02:07least one person. Just outside Moscow, one woman was reportedly killed as drones hit
02:13two residential buildings, according to Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov.
02:18A video published by the Russian telegram channel MASH appeared to show a drone crashing
02:23into the building.
02:24Three people were injured in the attack, the Moscow governor said. The reported incident
02:45marks one of the largest drone attacks on Russian territory since it started its full-scale
02:50invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
02:53Overall, Russia's defense ministry said it intercepted and destroyed 144 Ukrainian drones
02:59over nine Russian regions.
03:02This would be the second major Ukrainian drone attack on Russia this month. On 1 September,
03:08the Russian military said it intercepted 158 Ukrainian drones over more than a dozen regions.
03:15The European Commission has sharply criticized the Hungarian government for threatening to
03:26bus migrants from Hungary's borders to the EU capital, Brussels.
03:32The Commission says the provocation, if followed through, would be illegal and would put the
03:37security of the passport-free Schengen zone at risk.
03:42First of all, in terms of the announcements made by the Hungarian authorities that they
03:47would transport irregular migrants from the Hungarian-Serbian borders to Brussels, in
03:53one word, basically it is unacceptable. So this action, if carried out, would be in clear
04:01breach of the EU law, but also it will be in clear breach of the principle of sincere
04:07and loyal cooperation, but also of the mutual trust.
04:10In addition, it will also undermine the security of the Schengen area as a whole.
04:16The threats are part of an ongoing spat between Budapest and Brussels after the EU's highest
04:22court slapped a 200 million euro fine on Hungary for restricting the right to asylum back in
04:282020. The Hungarian government has missed the first deadline to pay that fine. If it
04:33continues to refuse to pay up, the Commission could deduct it from Hungary's allocated share
04:38of the EU budget.
04:40Brussels has said it will leave no stone unturned to ensure Hungary refrains from carrying
04:45out its threats.
04:47The Commission is in touch with the Hungarian authorities to ensure that this action is
04:54not taking place and that Hungary refrains from it. We're also in touch with the neighbouring
05:01countries, but also with the justice and home affairs agencies, and we are also standing
05:07ready to use all our powers under the treaty to ensure that the EU law is respected.
05:15The latest escalation puts further strain on the relationship between Brussels and Budapest.
05:21Viktor OrbΓ‘n's government has taken a confrontational stance towards EU migration policies, claiming
05:27they force Hungary to allow irregular migrants to cross its borders.
05:38Germany is toughening its border controls by introducing temporary checks at all of
05:43its borders. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says it is an attempt to reduce irregular
05:50migration.
05:53Until we come to a strong protection of EU foreign borders with the new European asylum
05:58system, we have to control our national borders even more. These checks also allow effective
06:05withdrawal.
06:07Temporary border controls will be set up at the land borders with France, Luxembourg,
06:12the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark for a period of six months.
06:18The same measures are already in place on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic,
06:23Austria and Switzerland.
06:27Europe's Schengen area allows for free travel between member countries. However, member
06:32states are allowed to introduce border checks if they feel there is a threat to internal
06:37security.
06:40Faeser adds that the government has already notified the European Union of the intended
06:45controls.
06:49Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing
07:00to discuss deepening trade relations, the Spanish government said.
07:05The leaders also discussed international conflicts such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Spain
07:23is a member of NATO, an alliance that China says prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin
07:29into war. While the two countries have differing opinions on the fighting, Sanchez and Xi agreed
07:35on strengthening bilateral ties. The call for dialogue comes as relations between China
07:40and the EU reaches boiling point, with Brussels slapping hefty tariffs on Chinese-made electric
07:46vehicles. The leaders did not announce any specifics pertinent to electric vehicles at
07:51the meeting.
07:53The European Commission has won two court cases against big tech companies Apple and
08:00Google. Apple will now have to return 13 billion euros in taxes to Ireland after the European
08:07Court of Justice revised the previous ruling and concluded that the US company did benefit
08:12from artificially low taxes between 1991 and 2014.
08:17Ireland granted Apple unlawful aid, which Ireland now has to recover. Few member states
08:25were relying on tax rulings and aggressive tax planning arrangements to become a more
08:32attractive destination for multinational investment. This harmed other member states and the European
08:39taxpayer, of course.
08:41This is the final judgment, but in a statement, Apple, whose European headquarters are in
08:46Ireland, still expressed disagreement and insisted that there has never been a special
08:51deal. The US company believes the Commission is now trying to retroactively change the
08:56rules and ignore that Apple was already paying taxes in the US. But for Oxfam, this is a
09:02case of tax justice that will help small companies, but above all, citizens that will benefit
09:07from recovering taxes.
09:09We are just talking about fair taxation. When a company like Apple paid 0.005%, this is
09:18unfair. There is no European citizens, maybe some billionaires, that pay so few taxes.
09:25So I think it's really an issue of eleven playing field. And I mean, we should pretend
09:33companies and also wealthiest individuals to pay more. These are not profits that go
09:39into investment.
09:42In the second case, the European Commission also won a judgment in its favour against
09:46Google Shopping. The European Court of Justice ruled that the company favoured their own
09:51services over their competition, abusing their dominant position in the market.
09:57US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are gearing up for their first
10:04ever debate ahead of the 2024 elections in November. The events will take place in Philadelphia
10:11on Wednesday at 3am Central European Time.
10:15The debates will offer American voters their most detailed look at a presidential race
10:20that's dramatically changed since President Joe Biden dropped out in June.
10:26And as the only scheduled debate between the two candidates, it's likely to be a defining
10:31moment for both their campaigns.
10:37Pope Francis has called for the protection of young people during his visit to Timor-Leste.
10:43By doing so, he indirectly acknowledged the abuse scandal involving independence hero
10:48Bishop Carlos Jimenez Bello.
10:50And let's not forget so many children and teenagers who have been hurt in their dignity.
10:57This phenomenon is flourishing all over the world. We are all called to act as a responsibility
11:04to prevent all kinds of abuse and guarantee a serene growth for our young people.
11:12Timor-Leste is the first country in the world to have a presidential election.
11:18Timor-Leste is the most Catholic country outside of the Vatican. Its residents were eager to
11:24welcome the first Pope to visit them as an independent nation.
11:28This is the Pope's third stop on his 12-day Southeast Asia and Oceania tour, having previously
11:34visited Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.
11:38After Timor-Leste, the Pope will visit Singapore before returning to Rome on the 13th of September.
