00:00The leader of the far-right AFD in Thuringia calls his party's success in Sunday's state
00:06elections a historic victory.
00:11Russia attacked Ukrainian cities Kharkiv and Kiev early Monday morning and also reported
00:16a Ukrainian shelling in Belgorod.
00:20Strikes and protests disrupted Israel with demonstrators crying out against what they
00:24say is their government's failure to return hostages taken by Hamas.
00:35The leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany in Thuringia, Björn Höcke, has called
00:39his party's success in Sunday's state elections a historic victory.
00:44It's the first time since World War II that a far-right party appears set to enter a state
00:49parliament with the AFD polling at over 32 percent of the vote.
01:11The conservative Christian Democratic Union has fallen to second place in Thuringia but
01:16is slightly ahead in the polls in neighboring Saxony.
01:19The CDU's minister-president for the state, Michael Kretschmer, said his party was ready
01:24to govern.
01:39The Greens, one of the three parties that makes up Germany's ruling coalition, performed
01:43poorly in both states.
01:46The party's leader in the German parliament said he was more disappointed about the strong
01:50showing of the AFD than he was about the poor polling for his own party.
02:09Many view these results as a barometer of public sentiment for the current government
02:13ahead of next year's national elections.
02:16But the inconclusive results in both federal regions means forming a government will be
02:21very difficult.
02:22It's extremely unlikely that any other party will agree to put AFD in power by joining
02:27it in a coalition.
02:29The CDU's national general secretary, Carsten Linnemann, said his party will stick to its
02:34long-standing refusal to work with the far-right group.
02:40Yesterday marked the very first time since the Nazis were in power that the far-right
02:44has won a state election in Germany.
02:48Far-right party Alternative für Germany, or the AFD, celebrated coming first place
02:52in Thuringia and second place in Saxony, according to the first-exit polls.
03:18AFD applauded the historic results, according to Sunday's exit polls.
03:24But will they be able to form a coalition?
03:48A counter-protest was held outside the Erfurt parliament as exit results came in.
04:18Voter turnout was much higher this year compared to the previous elections in 2019.
04:37The main losers of this election were the current coalition parties, Social Democrats,
04:42Greens and the Liberals.
04:46Russia has launched a barrage of drones, crews and ballistic missiles at Kiev Monday
04:50morning.
04:52Residents were sent into bomb shelters as several explosions rocked the city.
04:57One person was injured from falling debris, according to Kiev mayor Vitaly Klitschko.
05:03The head of Kiev's city military administration said over 10 cruise missiles, about 10 ballistic
05:09missiles and a drone fired at the Ukrainian capital and its suburbs were destroyed by
05:14Ukraine's air defenses.
05:19In the Russian city of Belgorod, a Ukrainian shelling reportedly damaged a kindergarten,
05:24a commercial facility, several residential buildings and cars, said governor Vyacheslav
05:29Gladkov.
05:31Just hours earlier, a strike in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv damaged a gas pipe and wounded
05:36dozens.
05:38Local firefighters tried to quench flames from leaking gas.
05:42This comes a day after Russia's military reported 158 Ukrainian drones targeted multiple
05:48Russian regions in one of the biggest attacks of the war.
05:55Israel was disrupted by strikes protesting the government's failure to return hostages
06:00taken by Hamas.
06:02The strike came after hundreds of thousands poured into the streets after six hostages
06:07were found dead in Gaza.
06:09However, it was ignored in some areas like Jerusalem, reflecting deep political division.
06:14A labor court ruled the strike must end, accepting a petition from the government saying it was
06:19politically motivated.
06:21The head of Israel's largest trade union said it would abide by the decision and instructed
06:26members to return to work.
06:32Exit polls show that Azerbaijan's ruling party secured a narrow victory in Sunday's snap
06:37election.
06:39Initial results show President Ilham Aliyev's new Azerbaijani party won 68 out of 125 seats,
06:47down from 69.
06:49Altogether, 11 political parties are represented in the parliament as a result of these elections,
06:58but these are preliminary results.
07:01And so, and all other, just 10 political parties get altogether 13 seats in the parliament.
07:09And the turnout, according to the preliminary results, for the whole country was 37.27%.
07:21The new Azerbaijan party has been in power since 1993.
07:27Initially led by Haider Aliyev, the party is now under the leadership of his son, who's
07:32often accused of ruling heavy-handedly and suppressing dissent.
07:39The election comes less than a year after Azerbaijani forces reclaimed the Nagorno-Karabakh
07:43region, which had been under the control of Armenian forces since 1994.
07:49Voting was held in the region for the first time in 30 years.
07:58The Gotthard Base Tunnel, the main rail connection between Switzerland and Italy, reopens on
08:03Monday more than a year after an accident forced its closure.
08:08It happened on August 10th last year, when a Swiss Federal Railway's freight train derailed
08:12due to a broken wheel.
08:15The derailment caused the train to crash into the gate, separating the western and eastern
08:20tunnels, causing severe damage.
08:22An investigation after the crash revealed that hairline fractures in a wagon wheel caused
08:27the accident when pieces came away, causing the carriage to jump the tracks.
08:32And the clean-up operation was also problematic.
08:53SBB estimated last year that repairing the damage would cost in the region of 135 million
09:01euros, but the company said this week that the final price tag was 159 million.
09:07Taking almost 17 years to complete after decades of planning, the Gotthard Base Tunnel is the
09:13longest railway tunnel in the world, stretching 57 kilometers under the Swiss Alps.
09:19It's an essential link between Switzerland's German and Italian-speaking cantons, and costs
09:2410 billion euros to construct.
09:30The first day of school is the beginning of a new stage of life for children, and it's
09:34a great big holiday for them.
09:36118,000 first graders will start school this year in the Czech Republic, and a total of
09:42998,000 pupils will attend primary schools.
09:47For parents today, this means considerable financial expenditure.
10:07You need to add the cost of a school canteen, the after-school club, sport or art clubs,
10:12and other activities.
10:14The expenditures of school are also rising up, mainly due to the increased heating and
10:19energy costs.
10:31The rising cost of school is growing problem, especially for poor parents and single parents,
10:36but also for the children of Ukrainian refugees.
10:40The Czech Republic hosts about 340,000 such refugees, most of whom are single mothers
10:46with children.
10:47Nora Friedrichova's wardrobe Prague is the largest humanitarian center in the Czech Republic
10:53with direct material aid.
10:55Here donors bring items they don't need, which can be then taken by parents in need after
11:00proper registration.
11:11During the next week and the week after that, they will be giving out school supplies for
11:17all parents and school children in need.
