00:00These malnourished infants have been receiving care at a children's hospital in Port Sudan,
00:07to some of the casualties of the devastating 16-month-long war that's wrecked the country.
00:14On a visit to the hospital, the director-general of the World Health Organization said insufficient
00:19action was being taken to stop the conflict as he spelled out the scale of the crisis.
00:25Sudan's conflict has so far killed more than 20,000 people. This is an underestimate, by
00:30the way. Displaced over 10 million people inside the country and forced another two
00:38million to flee to neighbouring countries. This is the largest internal displacement
00:45of people in the world today.
00:49Sudan was plunged into chaos in April last year when tensions between the military and
00:54a powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces, exploded into open warfare
00:59across the country. UN-backed human rights investigators have urged the creation of an
01:04independent and impartial force to protect civilians, accusing both sides of war crimes,
01:09but in particular the Rapid Support Forces of crimes including rape, sexual slavery and
01:15persecution on ethnic grounds.
01:18Having a protection force or protecting civilians is really paramount in this war and in this
01:25crisis and it's critical that both all sides in this conflict are respecting international
01:32humanitarian law and protecting civilians.
01:36UN officials emphasised though that the best protection for civilians was a ceasefire,
01:41leading to a lasting political solution.
