00:00A community in shock. The residents of the Sudanese Red Sea state have begun to bury
00:06their dead after the Arbat Dam collapsed Saturday night. At around three in the morning, deadly
00:13floodwaters surprised people in their beds, washing away their homes.
00:18The water swept away around 40 people. We recovered some bodies and there were people
00:25that survived. I called some people from the area where I'm from, the Tabub area, and they
00:31told me that all the houses and everything was swept away.
00:38Search and rescue personnel have been deployed to help those stranded, with General Abdel
00:43Fattah al-Burhan visiting the affected area.
00:49We received a message saying there were people who were stuck in seven cars and that they
00:53tried to get them out but couldn't. There were seven lorries carrying families, elderly
00:58people and children. We then received another call and were told that the dam had collapsed.
01:12The Arbat Dam is the main water source for Port Sudan, located 40 kilometres away. The
01:18city is the base for the government and aid agencies, and home to hundreds of thousands
01:22of people displaced by the war with the rapid support forces.
01:27The Sudanese dams help the country manage the seasonal heavy rainfall, however the war
01:32has wrecked civilian infrastructure.
