Carl Froch vs Andre Dirrell

  • last week
Transcript
00:00:00and he's been a great champion.
00:00:05Carl Frosch is 25 and 0
00:00:07and always finds a way to win.
00:00:09That was never more dramatically evident
00:00:12than when he crossed the pond in April
00:00:14and defended the WBC super middleweight title
00:00:16against Jermaine Taylor.
00:00:18Frosch was outboxed for most of the fight
00:00:21and trailed on points going into the last round
00:00:23then in an incredible rally.
00:00:26He stopped Taylor with 14 seconds remaining in the fight.
00:00:29He's being followed by his hometown fans
00:00:32who expect Frosch to once again find a way to win
00:00:36however long that takes.
00:00:41Andre Durell's been waiting for this moment
00:00:43almost his entire life.
00:00:45His grandfather first took him to a gym at age 10
00:00:48and his outstanding amateur career
00:00:50was punctuated by a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics.
00:00:54Durell does not dispute the fact
00:00:57that he's not as accomplished
00:00:58as most of the fighters in the Super 6,
00:01:00but his size, speed, and switch-hitting style
00:01:03make him a threat to Carl Frosch
00:01:05and the rest of the fighters in the tournament as well.
00:01:09Durell has serious, and I mean serious, star potential,
00:01:13and tonight just might be the night
00:01:15he demonstrates that skill and emerges as a star.
00:01:23The opening bout of the Super 6 World Boxing Classic
00:01:26is in the books.
00:01:27As you can see, Sam wins three points
00:01:30by knocking out Jermaine Taylor.
00:01:32Now we are just about ready
00:01:34for the second half of tonight's doubleheader
00:01:36as Carl Frosch fights Andre Durell.
00:01:39Carl Frosch is unbeaten in 25 professional fights,
00:01:43and Andre Durell has an unblemished record
00:01:46and is in his 18 pro fights.
00:01:49Two fighters who have never tasted defeat.
00:01:52Tonight, somebody's O has to go.
00:01:58♪♪
00:02:04They can say we haven't fought anybody.
00:02:06Come on, baby. It's fight time. It's fight time.
00:02:08You know, they can say that we haven't been tested yet.
00:02:12They could have easily picked somebody else,
00:02:14but I know I belong here,
00:02:17and I will prove a lot of people wrong.
00:02:20This is right after the knockdown.
00:02:22Right now, Jermaine Taylor's just showing too much respect.
00:02:24He's losing too much respect.
00:02:26I focus on my objective.
00:02:28My objective is Frosch, and I have to study him
00:02:30in every aspect of the sport.
00:02:32He wasn't turning into a U.S.A. in the street fight.
00:02:35No stance. It's gone. It's gone.
00:02:38I'm not underestimating him by no means,
00:02:40but I believe this is where my talent will show the most.
00:02:44Granddaddy.
00:02:45Hey, Daddy, the people want to know
00:02:48what you think Andre need to do to whoop Carl Frosch.
00:02:51All he got to do is what I taught him.
00:02:53Ha-ha! Yeah!
00:02:55Too bad we all can't fight more than one night.
00:02:58You know?
00:03:01The fight is in his hometown.
00:03:03He has a lot to prove,
00:03:05and he doesn't want to lose to a guy of my stature.
00:03:09I get in there. I whoop him.
00:03:11I take his belt.
00:03:13No excuses.
00:03:16It was just my time.
00:03:24I thrive under pressure.
00:03:26A lot of people fall under pressure,
00:03:28but I love when that adrenaline's released
00:03:30from the spinal cord.
00:03:31The fluid goes into your blood.
00:03:32It gives you that pump and that lift,
00:03:33and your hair stand up.
00:03:34I feel indestructible.
00:03:36I just want to do some damage, and I enjoy it.
00:03:42Fighting Jermaine Taylor, that was the first time
00:03:45I've ever been knocked down in my professional career.
00:03:47I kept cool. I kept calm.
00:03:49And going up round 12, I did what I had to do.
00:03:51I didn't leave it to the judges.
00:03:54I showed everybody what I'm made of.
00:03:57Just don't take too long with this time, Cole.
00:03:58Just get it over with, will you?
00:04:00Don't leave it till the last 14 seconds.
00:04:02My heart, my heart can't take it.
00:04:06I'm certainly not worried about Andre Durand.
00:04:08I've seen his record. There's no names on there.
00:04:11He's said a few things that are a little bit disrespectful
00:04:13to a world champion about what he's going to do
00:04:15and what I haven't got.
00:04:16I've had it all before.
00:04:17I'm too slow, and I don't punch hard,
00:04:19and I'm not experienced, or I've got no defense.
00:04:2225 fights, 25 wins, they all end up the same way.
00:04:27I'm usually flattened on the canvas.
00:04:29All I can do is wish him luck.
00:04:33Hal, in tonight's battle of undefeated fighters,
00:04:37what do you think the pivotal factors are?
00:04:40Crowd, the difference in age, experience,
00:04:43speed versus experience.
00:04:45What do you think?
00:04:46You know, so much of the charm of this tournament
00:04:49is the unknown, so it's appropriate that tonight,
00:04:52I think this fight hinges on what we don't know.
00:04:54Now, Karl Fratsch is a proven commodity,
00:04:56so it's Andre Durand that provides us with the mystery.
00:04:59A lot of firsts for him tonight.
00:05:01First time fighting a world-class opponent,
00:05:03first time fighting in this kind of a hostile environment,
00:05:06and he may be forced to go 12 rounds.
00:05:09That would be the first time he's ever done that.
00:05:11And in addition, you know,
00:05:13he has never really fought the exact kind of fight
00:05:16that he needs to fight tonight to beat Karl Fratsch,
00:05:18except maybe against Curtis Stevens.
00:05:21So really, there are a lot of challenges
00:05:23facing him tonight.
00:05:24No question about it, Antonio.
00:05:25Much of the talk leading up to tonight's fight
00:05:28has focused on the unique nature of this tournament.
00:05:31How do these fighters put aside all of that
00:05:34and concentrate on getting in the ring and banging?
00:05:37Well, you know what? With the super six,
00:05:38the stakes are high.
00:05:40It's gonna be very difficult.
00:05:41But with Karl Fratsch, he's defending
00:05:42his WBC super middleweight championship,
00:05:45and everyone's here to see him win.
00:05:47So he has an enormous amount of pressure on him.
00:05:49How does he kill Andre Durell's dream
00:05:51of becoming a world champion tonight?
00:05:54That remains to be seen.
00:05:56All right, with that in mind,
00:05:58it is time for the second part of our co-feature,
00:06:01our main event, coming to you from Nottingham, England,
00:06:05Andre Durell, the young man from Flint, Michigan,
00:06:08versus Karl Fratsch, the WBC champion.
00:06:12He is the world title holder,
00:06:15and now let's go inside the ring
00:06:18at Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:06:20Crowd chanting,
00:06:21Jimmy Lennon!
00:06:23Ladies and gentlemen,
00:06:26the time has come for the super six world boxing classic.
00:06:31Please welcome the boxers as they make their way
00:06:34to the ring.
00:06:36First, joining us to the blue corner,
00:06:39the undefeated challenger from the United States,
00:06:44the Matrix,
00:06:46Andre Durell!
00:06:51
00:06:57Andre Durell, the young challenger,
00:06:59born and raised in Flint.
00:07:01This former Olympic bronze medalist
00:07:03was abandoned by his father at an early age,
00:07:06taken in by his grandfather
00:07:09when he and his brother became too much to handle
00:07:11for a young mom.
00:07:13This man has been given a rare gift, folks.
00:07:16He possesses unbelievable speed and quickness.
00:07:19His nickname is the Matrix,
00:07:21and like a young Neo,
00:07:24he has yet to tap in to his true potential,
00:07:27but he is starting to believe.
00:07:31Tonight, we find out if he can truly be the one.
00:07:35
00:07:42
00:07:48If body language means anything
00:07:50and an incandescent smile does,
00:07:53Andre Durell apparently not affected by this scene,
00:07:57but sometimes you can't tell by what's on the outside.
00:08:00Most definitely.
00:08:01I mean, tonight, he's thrown in deep waters.
00:08:04I'm anxious to see can he swim with the big boys tonight.
00:08:07
00:08:12Andre Durell steps into the ring
00:08:15for the biggest challenge of his career.
00:08:18
00:08:23
00:08:29Now let's go back inside the ring to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:08:32Let's go.
00:08:34
00:08:42

00:08:51joining us to the red corner,
00:08:53the undefeated world champion
00:08:56from England,
00:08:58Carl Brauch!
00:09:13The champion, born and raised right here in Nottingham.
00:09:19Carl Brauch is the pride of Sherwood Forest,
00:09:22a true warrior, a modern day Robin Hood.
00:09:28At 32, Brauch lusts for international recognition,
00:09:34especially in the United States.
00:09:36He feels that this is the beginning of his era
00:09:39and knows that winning the Super Six World Boxing Classic
00:09:44will not only catapult him to the superstardom,
00:09:46but like his coach, even Robin of Locksley,
00:09:49make him legendary.

00:15:35the undefeated WBC super heavyweight champion
00:15:40of the world, introducing El Coro,
00:15:44the Cobra Brawler!
00:15:57Once again, a referee in charge,
00:15:59now to give instructions, Hector Afur.
00:16:05Come on.
00:16:11Come on.
00:16:13I got them the fusion in the dressing room.
00:16:17I want a clean fight.
00:16:19Touch gloves.
00:16:21Good luck.
00:16:24All right, the question.
00:16:26We start with Andre Durell.
00:16:29Can he keep his composure fighting on the big stage?
00:16:33In this hostile environment,
00:16:35but the biggest question is,
00:16:37how will he react if he gets hurt?
00:16:41And for the champion, Karl Frosch,
00:16:43can he handle the speed and accurate punching
00:16:46of a sharpshooter like Durell?
00:16:48And can he take away Durell's confidence
00:16:52by keeping the pressure on him
00:16:54and making Durell uncomfortable?
00:17:03And we begin.
00:17:12This fight, we should mention,
00:17:14is being contested in a 20-by-20 ring.
00:17:16All of the super six fights
00:17:19will be contested in the same size ring,
00:17:21and of course, for Durell, size of ring is important
00:17:24because he presumably wants to move and use all of this ring.
00:17:27Karl Frosch keeping that left hand low.
00:17:30Durell also.
00:17:33Durell, a sharp, lightning-quick puncher
00:17:37with Roy Jones-type speed.
00:17:40But he finishes off low quite often,
00:17:43and sometimes he'll even pull straight back
00:17:45with his chin up.
00:17:48And at this level, it could really cost him.
00:17:51We note that Durell starts out as a right-hander.
00:17:54Of course, he likes to switch back and forth a lot,
00:17:57but right now he starts the fight as a righty,
00:17:59and Frosch told us he thought
00:18:01that was the weakest side of Durell
00:18:03and that he could pick him apart as a righty.
00:18:06Durell telling us that he will fight right-handed
00:18:10most of this fight, as you mentioned, Al.
00:18:17The Frosch jab has not been seen yet.
00:18:20There it is.
00:18:23Karl Frosch telling us
00:18:25that he wants to take Durell into deep water.
00:18:28He thinks that jet lag will set in around 5 or 6,
00:18:32and that's when he can really go to work.
00:18:37Frosch missing with the left hook.
00:18:40He also told us he wants to keep that right hand
00:18:43right under his chin
00:18:45to block and smother the Durell jab.
00:18:50Durell is talking to Karl Frosch.
00:18:53That's interesting ploy, Antonio,
00:18:56for any fighter in this atmosphere.
00:18:58That just lets you know his confidence.
00:19:00You know, he's really confident that he's here
00:19:02to take care of business tonight.
00:19:04What's obvious to me is the difference in hand speed.
00:19:07You can tell it's night and day.
00:19:21Both fighters taking their time.
00:19:23Early on, Durell very relaxed.
00:19:26Now he switches over to Southpaw.
00:19:32Frosch very familiar fighting Southpaws.
00:19:35He beats Paul Pascal to take the title.
00:19:39Pascal, a Canadian,
00:19:42now the light heavyweight champion.
00:19:47We saw the counterpunching of Durell a moment ago,
00:19:50and he did touch Frosch on the way in.
00:19:52He's gonna have to do that on a regular basis
00:19:54during the course of this fight.
00:19:59There's that stiff jab.
00:20:01Really quick.
00:20:02Durell has been doing a much better job
00:20:04sitting down on his punches
00:20:06his last couple of fights.
00:20:08And that's the end of the first one.
00:20:13The keys to this fight,
00:20:15very interesting for both men.
00:20:17For Karl Frosch, he's got to double the jab.
00:20:20This is a sequence he should continue throughout the fight.
00:20:22First, double the jab,
00:20:24which pushes Durell to the ropes,
00:20:27where he tends to gravitate anyway.
00:20:29And then Frosch can land the right hand.
00:20:32This could be a fight changer for him.
00:20:35For Andre Durell,
00:20:37he can't switch constantly from righty to lefty.
00:20:39He has to do it with a purpose, as he did in round one.
00:20:42He cannot be on the ropes.
00:20:44He's got to keep this fight in the center of the ring.
00:20:46He did that effectively in round one.
00:20:48He's got to throw combinations, but then get out,
00:20:50not stay there, and brawl with Frosch.
00:20:59Trent FM Arena in Nottingham, England,
00:21:022 1⁄2 hours north of London.
00:21:07Karl Frosch, the champion,
00:21:09versus Andre Durell, the challenger.
00:21:13Durell, 25 years old, Frosch, 32.
00:21:18Karl Frosch in the black trunks,
00:21:20Durell in the green.
00:21:24Frosch comes into this fight
00:21:27after rallying from a third-round knockdown
00:21:31to Jermaine Taylor
00:21:33to knock him out in the 12th round
00:21:36in his WBC super middleweight title defense,
00:21:40the first defense,
00:21:42back on April 25th in Connecticut.
00:21:45Frosch, there's the Frosch jab.
00:21:47He said this is his first few rounds,
00:21:49as we pointed out, were going to be more tactical,
00:21:51but he said he does not want to get himself in a big hole
00:21:54and be digging out from a hole in round six or seven.
00:21:57But when he does use the jab,
00:21:59he does push Durell back,
00:22:01and that's an important weapon for him.
00:22:03And the battle of the jabs not very even, really.
00:22:06Yes, they are.
00:22:07I saw in the first round where Frosch had more success
00:22:10when Durell switched to Southpaw.
00:22:13So we'll keep an eye on that and see how he does.
00:22:17Andre Durell, Southpaw now,
00:22:22forcing Karl Frosch to leave.
00:22:25Taking his time.
00:22:27He wants to stay off the ropes
00:22:29and fight this fight right in the middle of the ring.
00:22:33Now, Frosch is undefeated against left-handers.
00:22:35He's 3-0 and does not feel that's an issue for him.
00:22:38We'll see.
00:22:44Durell keeping very good distance.
00:22:48Double left hook connects.
00:22:50Good countering by Andre Durell.
00:22:52That is so uncharacteristic of Frosch
00:22:54to lead off with a wild left hook.
00:22:56That is, although that's a punch
00:22:58you can normally hit Durell with,
00:23:00that was oddly thrown for Frosch.
00:23:02Frosch with the right hand to the body.
00:23:06Two very patient fighters.
00:23:11Durell looks very composed, Antonio,
00:23:15to be on such a grand stage.
00:23:17Yes, he does, but, you know,
00:23:19the fight hadn't got started yet.
00:23:21Both the fighters are still trying to fill each other out
00:23:23before they settle in, and we'll see more action.
00:23:25You know, it's ironic.
00:23:27We talked about the idea of Durell
00:23:29squaring himself up to Frosch.
00:23:31It's been Frosch who has actually ended up
00:23:33making himself a more available target
00:23:35at certain points to Durell
00:23:37when he misses with those wild punches.
00:23:40Frosch having a problem getting close.
00:23:42He's trying to get in punching range.
00:23:44Double left jab.
00:23:46Landing for Durell.
00:23:48He's got feline quickness.
00:23:50Ooh.
00:24:00Okay.
00:24:06Round 2, scheduled for 12.
00:24:09Time-out.
00:24:11Time-out.
00:24:13Time-out.
00:24:15Time-out.
00:24:18We talked about the fact that Carl Frosch
00:24:20is missing and putting himself at risk
00:24:22to counterpunching by Andre Durell,
00:24:24and here's a perfect example,
00:24:26leading off with that left hook, being countered.
00:24:28In boxing, it's an old saying.
00:24:30When you make your opponent miss, you got to make him pay,
00:24:32and those hooks did make him pay.
00:24:38Let's listen in to the corner of Andre Durell.
00:24:41His grandfather, Leon Lawson, is his trainer.
00:24:49Great.
00:25:01Andre Durell, a 3-to-1 underdog,
00:25:03and from what I understand, there are a lot of businessmen
00:25:06in Flint, Michigan,
00:25:08putting a lot of money on this young man.
00:25:19Hector Afu is your referee of Panama.
00:25:23That was Carl Frosch saying welcome to England
00:25:25to Andre Durell.
00:25:27Andre Durell with a lot of conversation,
00:25:30as you mentioned, Al, for Carl Frosch.
00:25:32He switches to Southpaw.
00:25:34What do you think he may be saying, Antonio?
00:25:36I have no idea.
00:25:38I mean, I think he's fighting very good
00:25:40from the conventional stance
00:25:42and haven't seen much from the Southpaw stance,
00:25:44but we'll see. Maybe he has a plan.
00:25:48Well, the one thing he's doing with the switching
00:25:50is he's not doing it in such a way
00:25:52that he gets caught in between,
00:25:53and that was the danger for Durell.
00:25:55There's the Frosch jab,
00:25:57and that's so important to him early in this fight.
00:26:00Now Durell's getting closer and closer to those ropes,
00:26:02which is where he gravitates to,
00:26:04but Frosch not yet taking advantage of it.
00:26:06Durell looking to counter.
00:26:08Frosch cutting off the ring now.
00:26:11Getting closer and closer.
00:26:15Straight left to the body for Durell.
00:26:18Durell is a combination puncher,
00:26:22and he's very effective and dangerous
00:26:25when he uses his combinations,
00:26:27but when he relies on just a one-two or a hot shot,
00:26:32he gives his opponent an opportunity.
00:26:35Let's see if he lets his hands go.
00:26:37In this fight, I think Durell is wary
00:26:39of trying to throw all those combinations
00:26:41because it leaves him open for big shots from Carl Frosch.
00:26:44Maybe later, but not early in this fight.
00:26:49So far, what Andre Durell has done very well
00:26:51is counterpunching.
00:26:53He has done it fairly well.
00:26:54He has, and in this round,
00:26:55it seems as if he's coming out
00:26:57trying to put a little hurt on Frosch in this round.
00:27:04And a reminder that Carl Frosch
00:27:06has often been in this position
00:27:08where early rounds, much like we saw
00:27:10with Arthur Abraham in his fight with Jermaine Taylor,
00:27:13where there are rounds that don't go his way,
00:27:16it's not a sprint for Carl Frosch.
00:27:18It's a marathon.
00:27:22Great counterpunching.
00:27:28And a smile comes across the face of the champion.
00:27:33Andre Durell has been known to run in fights.
00:27:37He did it versus Curtis Stevens in 2007,
00:27:40actually embarrassed himself.
00:27:42Stevens, a big puncher,
00:27:44and Durell running for most of that fight.
00:27:47He has settled down since then.
00:27:49Now, you know, Durell landed a great counterpunch a moment ago,
00:27:52and then Frosch landed a right hand,
00:27:54and Durell did the right thing.
00:27:56He motored away from there.
00:27:58Now, Durell getting out of the corner.
00:28:00Frosch pins him now.
00:28:04This is going to be a cat-and-mouse game.
00:28:12Rachel Cordingly, the girlfriend of Carl Frosch.
00:28:28Next to her, Carl's mom,
00:28:31who said to her son, of course,
00:28:33don't wait till last second to win this one.
00:28:36His mother, Carol, in attendance.
00:28:39That's where the counterpunch came from, Durell,
00:28:41and then Frosch follows him around the ring
00:28:43and lands a right hand.
00:28:45That shows you two things,
00:28:46the great counterpunching of Durell
00:28:48but the determination of Frosch.
00:28:51Oh, that's a straight, perfect straight left hand,
00:28:54but like you said, Frosch was determined to get his back,
00:28:57and I think this fight now will be held in close quarters.
00:29:00Close quarters now.
00:29:03Wasn't pretty, what Carl Frosch did,
00:29:05but he got the punch in.
00:29:13Round 4 scheduled for 12.
00:29:16Carl Frosch, the champion in black,
00:29:20Andre Durell, the challenger,
00:29:23in the green trunks.
00:29:26Now, Carl Frosch spars with fighters
00:29:28from Brendan Ingle's stable here in England,
00:29:33who we just saw one of Brendan's fighters,
00:29:35Junior Witter, who switches all over the place,
00:29:37and they do.
00:29:38His fighters don't even know
00:29:39what they're supposed to be at any given moment.
00:29:41They're lefty, they're righty.
00:29:42He said that really prepares him for Andre Durell.
00:29:45We'll see.
00:29:47Durell, sharp left hand.
00:29:49Now he's starting to sit down a little bit.
00:29:58We have not seen all our pressure yet from Carl Frosch,
00:30:01and that's probably to Andre Durell's benefit.
00:30:03He's had a certain amount of breathing room
00:30:06to at least get his feet under him here.
00:30:08Most definitely.
00:30:09I mean, Durell camp felt confident
00:30:10coming into this fight that their speed,
00:30:12foot speed and hand speed,
00:30:13would be the difference in this fight.
00:30:15They felt that if Jermaine Taylor
00:30:17could have as much success as he had against Frosch,
00:30:20why can't they?
00:30:21Ooh, beautiful combination by Durell.
00:30:25Two-punch combination.
00:30:26Now he's starting to go after Frosch a little bit.
00:30:29He's warmed up.
00:30:31He's still relaxed.
00:30:32Some blood coming out of the nose of Durell.
00:30:36Sticks Frosch with another short jab.
00:30:39And Frosch also trying to go to the body there.
00:30:41That's important for him at this point in the fight.
00:30:45And look at the quickness of Durell
00:30:46as he steps off the line.
00:30:50Now some blood maybe
00:30:52coming out of the upper lip of Andre Durell.
00:30:58It's interesting.
00:30:59Even though he's doing fairly well in this fight,
00:31:01he's the guy that has the bloody nose and bloody mouth.
00:31:04But Frosch has gotten some shots in.
00:31:09Looking at this fight, this round here,
00:31:11I believe Frosch is telling himself
00:31:12he's gonna have to take some chances.
00:31:14He's gonna have to take some risks
00:31:15in order to solve the speed puzzle against Durell.
00:31:18You couldn't be more correct, Antonio.
00:31:20And this is the moment when he realizes it.
00:31:22And literally, he sees blood.
00:31:24And there's a right hand to the body.
00:31:26Frosch is going to the body,
00:31:27and that's important right now.
00:31:33Andre Durell, very seasoned.
00:31:35We told you about his bronze medal at the Olympics.
00:31:39He's fought in 236 amateur fights
00:31:42with a 214 and 22 record.
00:31:48You can feel this fight,
00:31:49the intensity heating up as we move forward.
00:32:02Six seconds remaining in the fourth.
00:32:07These are very close rounds.
00:32:14The Flintstones are here.
00:32:17Andre Durell's family, his mom Lola,
00:32:20his brother Anthony, his fiancée Aliyah.
00:32:34Andre Durell, we mentioned the countering
00:32:36he's been able to do.
00:32:37Frosch, when he misses,
00:32:38often puts himself in a position there.
00:32:40He misses with the jab,
00:32:41and Durell with the not one but two punch combination.
00:32:46And you see it again, Antonio.
00:32:49Yeah, he's leaning out.
00:32:50He's reaching out there.
00:32:51Like I said, he has to take chances
00:32:53in order to solve that speed.
00:32:54And so he's saying, hey, cautious to the win.
00:32:56I gotta do whatever I have to do to get inside.
00:32:59And we should point out,
00:33:00if you've never seen Carl Frosch fight,
00:33:02he has a granite chin.
00:33:03He was down against Taylor,
00:33:04but to knock him out is a difficult task,
00:33:07even to hurt him.
00:33:08Carl Frosch told us that Durell will start feeling tired
00:33:12after five or six rounds.
00:33:14Durell coming over only six days in advance.
00:33:17Frosch thought he should come over
00:33:19between 21 days and three weeks in advance.
00:33:22He called Durell cheeky, disrespectful
00:33:26for not coming over here and training properly.
00:33:29That may have been a slight overstatement, you know?
00:33:34Ooh, very nice right hand by Durell.
00:33:36You see the hand speed.
00:33:41We talked about the fact that Andre Durell
00:33:43hadn't yet in his career fought a fight
00:33:46in which he did what he's doing right now,
00:33:48and that is box but not run,
00:33:50not engage in silly exchanges with people.
00:33:54Well, he is doing his best
00:33:56to fight exactly the right kind of fight.
00:33:58It's a very close fight right now,
00:34:00but he is doing the right thing.
00:34:01Yes, he is, and it seems as if he's growing up
00:34:03right before our eyes, you know?
00:34:04And I just commend him on his fighting style right now.
00:34:08If he can stay with this, he should do well tonight.
00:34:11But I have to say, Al, this is a fast fight.
00:34:13I mean, they're fighting with a lot of intensity,
00:34:15and can he withstand this through 12 rounds?
00:34:19Fratch hasn't yet put the kind of wild pressure on him
00:34:22that we might expect, but he has kept pushing him back
00:34:24and kept attacking.
00:34:26Another right hand by Durell, and Fratch throws him down.
00:34:34Is this MMA?
00:34:37A sumo game?
00:34:40You're gonna...
00:34:41You may mistake him for Fedor,
00:34:43who you're gonna see soon.
00:34:52So Carl Fratch with the hip throw.
00:34:54Andre Durell...
00:34:57gets back on his feet
00:34:59and goes back to work.
00:35:01He's been the busier fighter.
00:35:03And can't you feel, sitting here at ringside,
00:35:06What we don't know yet
00:35:08is when Carl Fratch lands a major punch.
00:35:10We haven't seen him land something really strong yet,
00:35:12and that's gonna tell us the final piece of the puzzle
00:35:15about how Andre Durell will do tonight.
00:35:17Unless Fratch never does,
00:35:19in which case Andre Durell did a great job.
00:35:21It'll be a shutout, but that throwdown was,
00:35:23I believe, a frustration throw.
00:35:25He hadn't landed the punch he thought he could land,
00:35:27and, you know, he's boxed him in the middle of the ring.
00:35:29I mean, we all felt that that was Durell's advantage point.
00:35:34Durell fought Tony Hanchaw in May,
00:35:36got in trouble in the first round,
00:35:38almost got knocked down,
00:35:40but then came back to score a very impressive
00:35:43fifth-round stoppage.
00:35:46Hanchaw's previous fight was with Roy Jones,
00:35:49a loss as well.
00:35:51And this time, Fratch...
00:35:54decides not to drop Durell,
00:35:57but he does give him a parting shot.
00:35:59Yeah, Carl Fratch, that's the second time
00:36:01he's blatantly hit on the break,
00:36:03and you have to think, perhaps,
00:36:06there might be a possibility of a point deduction
00:36:08at some point soon.
00:36:10And Antonio...
00:36:14Durell keeps going with that straight left hand to the body.
00:36:17What could that potentially set up?
00:36:19Well, instead of a lot of things,
00:36:21it neutralizes your opponent, keeps him at a distance.
00:36:25And this is what they're fighting for,
00:36:27the Super 6 World Boxing Classic Cup,
00:36:32super middleweights, 168 pounds, finish your thought.
00:36:35Like I was saying, you know,
00:36:37great fighter Floyd Mayweather uses that punch.
00:36:40Hold on. Be quiet.
00:36:44Floyd Mayweather Jr. uses that punch excellently.
00:36:47He keeps an opponent at bay,
00:36:49and then he can set up anything, the right hand or the hook,
00:36:51so I think Durell is doing pretty much the same thing.
00:36:54An example of the wrestling activity
00:36:56we saw in the last round,
00:36:58frustration by Froch or just an awkward moment.
00:37:05The Trent FM Arena in Nottingham,
00:37:08Karl Froch, the WBC world title holder.
00:37:13This is his second defense here
00:37:16at the Super 6 World Boxing Classic,
00:37:18the super middleweights.
00:37:21He defended it at first against Jermaine Taylor,
00:37:26and now in one of the biggest tournaments in the world,
00:37:31he'll do it against Durell.
00:37:35We talked about how well Andre Durell would do
00:37:37with all the nervous energy
00:37:39that he would have early in the fight.
00:37:41That hasn't been a big issue for him.
00:37:45He shows his skill to slip punches as well
00:37:49because he hasn't fought like he has nervous energy.
00:37:51No, he's fighting definitely with a lot of composure,
00:37:55a lot of energy, I might add, and he's trying.
00:37:58He's trying to really show the people
00:38:00that he deserves to be WBC champion.
00:38:06Now, we have to think about the possibility
00:38:08that Andre Durell has already made Karl Froch
00:38:10respect his power because Karl Froch
00:38:12is not attacking with as much abandon.
00:38:15Aside headlock, I'll tell you what,
00:38:17your MMA experience is going to come in handy, guys.
00:38:20I know.
00:38:22Froch missing with a wild left hook.
00:38:25Froch's technique is worse than normal,
00:38:27and I mean, he's not normally a pretty boxer.
00:38:30His technique is not great tonight,
00:38:33and he's throwing way too many wild left hooks.
00:38:35Well, his technique isn't great
00:38:37because he's never fought anybody as quick as Durell.
00:38:41Karl Froch, he beat Jermaine Taylor,
00:38:44he beat Jean Pascal, nice left hand by Durell.
00:38:49And now some dirty boxing by both fighters.
00:38:53And Hector, a fool,
00:38:55will have a conversation with both gentlemen.
00:38:58You sure you want to use the word gentlemen?
00:39:01Nice right hand by Froch.
00:39:03It's heated up now, but for Andre Durell,
00:39:05this is a trick bag.
00:39:07You don't want it to heat up too much.
00:39:09No, you don't. I mean, he has to stay focused.
00:39:11I mean, all the little dirty, nasty things
00:39:13that Karl Froch is doing, that's a veteran move.
00:39:16You know, we got Bernard Hopkins,
00:39:18he's perfected those type of moves.
00:39:20It's important that Durell stay focused on the job at hand,
00:39:23don't get outside himself.
00:39:25And Durell doesn't want too many of these wild exchanges either.
00:39:28No, he don't, because it gives Froch opportunity
00:39:31to land that big punch.
00:39:33And Karl Froch, conversely,
00:39:35wants it to get a little ugly in there
00:39:37and give himself some opportunities
00:39:39to land something big.
00:39:41Froch, a very unorthodox fighter,
00:39:43not a typical British fighter.
00:39:45He keeps his hands down by his waist
00:39:47to throw that fluky left hook.
00:39:50But right now, Andre Durell isn't there.
00:39:53You know, the problem for Froch is,
00:39:55he is not by nature a left-hook artist.
00:39:57If there is one punch that you are more likely
00:40:00to land against Durell, it's the left hook.
00:40:02And you see Froch watch that on the tape.
00:40:04He's trying to throw that punch, but it's not getting there.
00:40:16Let's go!
00:40:18Let's go!
00:40:27Don't let your combinations get in the way.
00:40:33That's all right.
00:40:35Protect yourself at all times.
00:40:37Protect yourself at all times.
00:40:39Don't worry about what's ahead of you.
00:40:45OK?
00:40:55Move to your left with your glove here.
00:40:57And then double up your attack, OK?
00:40:59Do you understand me?
00:41:00One, two, up, then right hand, left hook, all right?
00:41:02One, two, up, right hand, left hook.
00:41:04Carl, you've got to be busy now with the balance, all right?
00:41:10Don't give him a counter-shot.
00:41:12Don't give him a counter-shot.
00:41:14And that's the end of round 7.
00:41:19Carl Froch, 11-0, fighting in his hometown of Nottingham.
00:41:25Nice combination by Durell.
00:41:27And he'll hold on.
00:41:30Robert McCracken, the trainer of Carl Froch,
00:41:33a former super middleweight contender himself,
00:41:39a very, very fine trainer.
00:41:42Yeah, the former British Commonwealth middleweight champion, actually.
00:41:46And he had a record of 33-2 during his career.
00:41:51Retired in 2001.
00:42:01Round 7 scheduled for 12.
00:42:04And Durell is in.
00:42:11Al, where do you have this fight halfway through?
00:42:13A lot of close rounds, so you can take your pick,
00:42:17but I've got a 58-56 for Durell at this point.
00:42:21But again, a number of those rounds were close,
00:42:23so it's... this is an intriguing fight to score, to be sure.
00:42:28Remember, though, Froch gets stronger as the fight goes on.
00:42:33He has to start making something happen.
00:42:35The most troubling aspect of this fight for Carl Froch
00:42:38is that he is pinning a lot of his hopes on the left hook,
00:42:41and it's not there for him.
00:42:43Not tonight, and I want to commend Durell
00:42:45on just his boxing ability tonight.
00:42:47Froch has been unable to get set or planted
00:42:50in order to throw his power shots.
00:42:52Yeah, that's a very good point.
00:42:54And that's because he hasn't been able
00:42:56to put Durell against the ropes.
00:42:59Durell doing a lot of holding.
00:43:01Hector, a fool.
00:43:03And Durell mad because he thought
00:43:05Froch hit him behind the head there.
00:43:07And the Froch jab now disappearing,
00:43:09and that was a weapon he felt he needed very much.
00:43:12Left, straight left hand to the body,
00:43:14and he chops up top.
00:43:16Andre Durell holds on, takes a ride.
00:43:22A minute left in the round.
00:43:28And Durell is down.
00:43:35Carl Froch trying to make Durell fight.
00:43:37Hector, a fool, telling him to stop holding.
00:43:40Durell has been doing a lot of holding
00:43:42and refuses to fight inside.
00:43:47Carl Froch is turning this into a brawl or trying to.
00:43:50He's doing his best to make it that.
00:43:53Now, there's the stuff Andre Durell can't do,
00:43:56And that's Froch's best chance
00:43:58of turning this fight around,
00:44:00making it a dogfight, making it sloppy.
00:44:02Now Froch holding and hitting.
00:44:04Durell complaining, but getting hit.
00:44:06Bad move.
00:44:12Oh, beautiful left hook by Durell,
00:44:14right on the button.
00:44:16Froch tried to throw an uppercut from too far out.
00:44:19Durell countered him.
00:44:21Getting to be fun here.
00:44:24Durell and Antonio can stand there and fight Froch
00:44:28toe-to-toe. He's got that kind of quickness and skill.
00:44:31But I wouldn't advise him to do that.
00:44:33I think with Froch being a devastating puncher,
00:44:36Froch being a devastating puncher,
00:44:38anything can happen. He still has a puncher's chance.
00:44:40You think he's tired?
00:44:42No, in fact, I think Durell's breathing a little hard
00:44:44right now in the corner. I mean...
00:44:48Now, there was a lot going on,
00:44:50many plots and subplots in the last round.
00:44:52Most of them not quite within the rules.
00:44:54Here's where Froch was held by Durell.
00:44:58And he's banging Durell on the side of the head,
00:45:00so we had two different rule violations going on
00:45:02at that point.
00:45:04And later on, a lot more stuff going on, Antonio.
00:45:09The only thing I saw wrong there was he held him
00:45:11behind the head as he punched him.
00:45:13But other than that, that was fair game.
00:45:17He's spoken like a warrior.
00:45:19Right hand by Froch.
00:45:21He lands a couple on the inside.
00:45:24And Durell counters him.
00:45:26Well, he didn't get a chance to counter him there,
00:45:28but Froch did well on the inside.
00:45:30So that was an intriguing round.
00:45:36Round 8 scheduled for 12.
00:45:38Karl Froch, the champion, in the black trunks.
00:45:40Andre Durell, the challenger, in green.
00:45:47And we are now at the point in this fight
00:45:49where, and I still think it's a very close fight.
00:45:51I actually gave the last round to Froch.
00:45:53I think it's only a one-point fight.
00:45:55But this is the point in the fight
00:45:57where Froch is believing that Durell
00:45:59will, in fact, get a little fatigued,
00:46:01as Antonio pointed out.
00:46:03Well, he's hoping that he gets fatigued.
00:46:05Yeah, well, you can always hope.
00:46:07Beautiful left jab by Durell.
00:46:11Now he goes downstairs.
00:46:14Very patient and poised fight so far by Andre Durell,
00:46:18and that was the thing that you didn't know
00:46:20whether he could do.
00:46:22So win, lose, or draw in this first tournament fight,
00:46:24what Durell has shown is that he can keep his poise
00:46:26and fight a certain style,
00:46:28and he's done that tonight.
00:46:30And Froch hasn't made him change it.
00:46:32Now Froch putting his hands up high.
00:46:34Durell slipping.
00:46:36Good thing Karl Froch didn't hit him there.
00:46:39He would have been down.
00:46:41Karl Froch didn't hit him there.
00:46:43He would have been disqualified or had points taken away.
00:46:48Nice right-hand counter by Durell.
00:46:55Froch is not going to the body nearly as much.
00:46:58Oh, there he did it right on cue.
00:47:00Punching behind the head.
00:47:02I'll tell you, Karl Froch is giving us a clinic here
00:47:04on some rough tactics.
00:47:07Both fighters have been flirting with point deductions.
00:47:12Durell for holding
00:47:15and Froch for hitting behind the head.
00:47:18And there he's holding and hitting again,
00:47:20but Durell using his head a little bit,
00:47:22so a lot going on.
00:47:26Froch can't use his jab a lot now
00:47:28because he gets countered by Durell.
00:47:30Nice left hook, got through.
00:47:32Nice.
00:47:35Durell getting a little braver with those combinations.
00:47:38He got touched with him in the left hand
00:47:40by Froch on the way out of there.
00:47:43Froch cannot cut the ring off on Durell.
00:47:45He needed to do that.
00:47:47Oh, my.
00:47:52Did that punch change this fight?
00:47:54We'll see. Maybe it did.
00:47:57Froch coming in with his head.
00:48:0314 seconds to go in the 8th round.
00:48:17Andre Durell, Karl Froch,
00:48:208 in the books.
00:48:24Maybe for the first time in this fight,
00:48:27Andre Durell felt the power of Froch
00:48:30in that last round.
00:48:32It is a left hook.
00:48:34Finally, that punch got in for Karl Froch.
00:48:37He closed the distance, and there it is.
00:48:40Now, Froch is a better puncher with the right hand
00:48:43than the hook, but there's no question
00:48:45that that punch got in for Karl Froch.
00:48:48Now, Durell's left hook,
00:48:50he's a better puncher with the right hand
00:48:52than the hook, but there's no question
00:48:54that that punch altered things a bit for that round.
00:48:57For Durell, the good news is it came
00:48:59toward the end of the round,
00:49:01and he was able to slide through those remaining seconds.
00:49:04Let's see if that's a fight changer.
00:49:1110 seconds, guys.
00:49:15Second round, round 9.
00:49:24Round number 9, scheduled for 12.
00:49:27Karl Froch in black, Andre Durell in the green.
00:49:32This is a title fight.
00:49:34Karl Froch is the champion,
00:49:37the WBC world title holder.
00:49:41This stage one matchup here
00:49:43at the Super 6 World Boxing Classic,
00:49:45the super middleweight's 168 pounds.
00:49:49Our first fight of the evening,
00:49:51and our other co-feature,
00:49:53Arthur Abraham was electric
00:49:56as he knocks out Jermaine Taylor
00:49:59in the 12th round.
00:50:01Now the Froch jab is getting home a little bit.
00:50:07But to Durell's credit, he continues to keep this fight
00:50:09in the center of the ring,
00:50:11but the jab of Froch is making a difference.
00:50:13Froch with very long arms.
00:50:15He's getting closer.
00:50:17There's a little swelling under Durell's right eye.
00:50:20There's a little knot there.
00:50:22I don't know if that'll be any significance
00:50:24as the fight goes on.
00:50:26Good left hand.
00:50:35Ooh, very nice.
00:50:38Left hand by Durell,
00:50:40right on the chin of Karl Froch.
00:50:43Now he switches southpaw.
00:50:45He'll switch step by step,
00:50:47steps around, and Froch ties him up.
00:50:52Durell, very lackadaisical right there,
00:50:54leaving himself wide open.
00:50:56Froch, though, not able to do it.
00:50:58Straight right hand, left hook by Durell,
00:51:00and he smiles because he caught Froch coming in.
00:51:04Another left hand by Durell.
00:51:06I think he was smiling to try and tell Froch
00:51:08I wasn't hurt, and we'll see.
00:51:11They exchanged punches then.
00:51:13They both got hit.
00:51:14Durell pot-shotting him now.
00:51:16Staying on his bicycle.
00:51:18Froch pinning him on the ropes.
00:51:21Durell waiting, and a hold.
00:51:23It looks as if Durell is slowing down a little bit.
00:51:26He has to pick it up.
00:51:28He's not moving as well as he was early in the fight.
00:51:31He's getting stuck on those ropes a little bit more.
00:51:34There's a subtle change in this fight.
00:51:36Whether it continues in these later rounds
00:51:38remains to be seen, but Froch has got something going,
00:51:40and Durell better stop talking to the referee
00:51:42and start defending himself.
00:51:46Froch once again warned for holding behind
00:51:48and hitting behind the head.
00:51:50And that's happened a lot, and you could make the case
00:51:52for a point being taken from Carl Froch.
00:51:54Nice double jab, triple jab by Durell.
00:51:58Froch, though, stalking him.
00:52:00He's got to make this thing ugly now.
00:52:04Froch will make the argument that Durell's
00:52:06putting his head in a position where he can't help
00:52:08but hit him behind the head, but whether that's
00:52:10the real argument remains to be seen.
00:52:12But see Durell now getting caught on those ropes,
00:52:14counterpunching well, but he's in danger there.
00:52:18This has been a good round for Carl Froch.
00:52:20Yeah, he can't lean back with his head
00:52:22straight up on the ropes right now.
00:52:24I actually think that was a good round for Andre Durell.
00:52:27Really? Yes, I do.
00:52:30He caught him numerous times.
00:52:35There's Durell's family.
00:52:37That's his girlfriend, Aliyah, to the left.
00:52:40What are your combinations, boys?
00:52:43Round 10, baby. You got three. Can you take these three?
00:52:45Yeah. All right.
00:52:47No more combinations, Andre.
00:52:53Try not to hold him.
00:53:00Use that jab.
00:53:02Great quality, baby.
00:53:07Yeah, put your punch together.
00:53:09You've got three rounds left.
00:53:11Okay, threes and fours. Put him there and move him.
00:53:13And then he'll walk up to you.
00:53:15Use your brain. Come on.
00:53:24All right, Al. Unofficially, how do you have this score?
00:53:26I have a deadly...
00:53:28Well, I've got a one-point margin
00:53:30for Durell at this point in the fight.
00:53:34This is the 10th round.
00:53:36Durell has only gone 10 rounds one time.
00:53:38He's never gone 12,
00:53:40and he went 10 rounds against Curtis Stevens
00:53:42on June 16, 2007.
00:53:44Won a decision.
00:53:48When we spoke with Durell and the fighters,
00:53:50I mean, this is the point, the 10th round,
00:53:52when you've gone through a hard fight
00:53:54and the champion is not willing to give,
00:53:56that you will be questioning yourself.
00:53:58Can you get there? Can you make it through?
00:54:00This is where he has to dig deep and show the world
00:54:02that he's championship material.
00:54:04He's been 10 rounds one time in his career,
00:54:06never 12.
00:54:10Durell pushing through
00:54:12on that last combination.
00:54:14Wild right hand by Karl Froch.
00:54:16Karl Froch has five stoppages
00:54:18from round 8 or later,
00:54:20and he's 3-0 in 12-round decisions,
00:54:22and he is, of course,
00:54:24the winner in the Taylor fight
00:54:26that went into the 12th round.
00:54:28But all those numbers mean nothing
00:54:30if Andre Durell can box
00:54:32as he did in portions of the early rounds.
00:54:34Under 2 minutes to go.
00:54:36Left hand connecting for Durell.
00:54:38Froch answers with a stick jab.
00:54:44Durell is staying
00:54:46a little bit too long
00:54:48in one spot.
00:54:50He has to continue to move
00:54:52and do the things that work for him
00:54:54in this fight.
00:55:00Body work by Froch,
00:55:02which he should really have been doing
00:55:04a lot earlier in this fight.
00:55:06That's probably one of the things
00:55:08he'll look back on and be annoyed with.
00:55:10What is this?
00:55:12Oh, my.
00:55:16Don't know if I'm on board with this,
00:55:18because with all the things
00:55:20that have gone on in this fight,
00:55:22I don't think there's a point
00:55:24in this juncture where a referee
00:55:26needs to intersperse himself
00:55:28into this fight,
00:55:30especially given the fact
00:55:32that Froch himself has been guilty
00:55:34of many different infractions.
00:55:36That's a huge point to be deducted.
00:55:38Especially if this fight's
00:55:40as close as you say it is, Al.
00:55:42Right, and we don't know,
00:55:44but it seems like it's a fairly close fight.
00:55:46And what will that do
00:55:48to Andre Durell's psyche?
00:55:50Well, you can see Andre Durell
00:55:52getting out of the corner,
00:55:54but Durell has to take the title
00:55:56from the champions.
00:55:58Oh, big left hand by Durell.
00:56:00He's got to really dig down deep,
00:56:02as you mentioned, Antonio,
00:56:04and there's gonna come a point
00:56:06where he has to just stand there and fight.
00:56:08And he did it right there
00:56:10with two monstrous right hands,
00:56:12but he's shown wild left hooks, Andre Durell.
00:56:14He cannot leave himself open
00:56:16with a dangerous puncher like Froch.
00:56:18You know, it's counterproductive.
00:56:20Still the movement is there for Durell,
00:56:22and that's a big plus for him,
00:56:24but this tricky round
00:56:26because of that point deduction.
00:56:28Nice left hand again. He hurt Froch.
00:56:30Froch is hurt.
00:56:32Durell, uppercut.
00:56:36Froch coming back off balance.
00:56:38He really tagged him
00:56:40at the end of the round.
00:56:42Andre Durell.
00:56:49Put your legs out.
00:56:51Put your legs out. Put your legs out.
00:56:53Listen, put your legs out. Listen to me.
00:56:55I keep telling you, don't rush in, all right?
00:56:57Listen. You're listening to me.
00:56:59Don't rush in. Do you understand what I'm saying to you?
00:57:01Carl, you're walking in
00:57:03with your hands down, what he just said to you.
00:57:05Put your chin down behind the jab.
00:57:07Behind the jab. Listen to me.
00:57:09Listen to me, son. Behind the jab now.
00:57:11You're listening to me. Is your mind clear, yeah?
00:57:13Carl, behind the jab,
00:57:15slip and slide to the front.
00:57:19Andre Durell,
00:57:21who was being pushed back at this point,
00:57:23and there was a lot of grappling
00:57:25and holding and punching
00:57:27on the inside.
00:57:33The big punch from Durell
00:57:35and punches that appeared
00:57:37to hurt Carl Froch.
00:57:39The handspeed an issue.
00:57:41Well, you know, with that point being taken away,
00:57:43he knew he had to have a big finish
00:57:45to possibly make this a 9-9 round.
00:57:47Froch told us
00:57:49that he'll do anything to win.
00:57:51He felt like he's a warrior
00:57:53and the most important thing
00:57:55was to go in there and take his opponent's scalp.
00:57:57Andre Durell
00:57:59has never seen the 11th round before.
00:58:03So we'll see how he reacts.
00:58:05Kudos to Durell
00:58:07for one important thing.
00:58:09He has switched lefty to righty
00:58:11but stayed in that posture long enough
00:58:13so that he's not getting caught switching.
00:58:15And that, to me, is the most key
00:58:17strategy for him.
00:58:19There he switches again, though,
00:58:21and Froch can't take advantage while he's doing it.
00:58:23Oh, look at the head movement!
00:58:25Wow! And he comes up
00:58:27with a left hand!
00:58:31Incredible speed
00:58:33and quickness.
00:58:35That was a telling sequence in this fight.
00:58:41Froch not as aggressive now.
00:58:43Looks to be slightly confused.
00:58:47How do I get to this quick guy?
00:58:49Durell keeps sticking his tongue out at him.
00:58:51Uppercut, left hand!
00:58:53Froch hurt again!
00:58:55Froch is in trouble!
00:58:57Now he'll hold on!
00:58:59You'd think by any chance
00:59:01that Durell was thinking about those three points.
00:59:03Well, he better be careful if he is,
00:59:05but he is certainly showing...
00:59:07Oh, big hook by Froch!
00:59:09That's the kind of punch that could turn it around again
00:59:11and did it! We'll see.
00:59:15Stylistically, this is wrong for Durell,
00:59:17but it's creating a lot of excitement
00:59:19and he may well be winning this round,
00:59:21and probably is, it's just he's putting himself in danger.
00:59:23Carl Froch wants to try
00:59:25and land something to change the dynamic
00:59:27of this fight.
00:59:35Good body work a moment ago there by Froch,
00:59:37again, coming probably too late in the fight.
00:59:41Durell and Froch
00:59:43exchanging punches now.
00:59:45Durell is pulling out
00:59:47with his hands down.
00:59:49Look at him roll, slip.
00:59:51Old-school fighting right here.
00:59:55Andre Durell, nice defense.
01:00:11Durell's hands are down.
01:00:19Another left hand grazing the top of Froch's head
01:00:21by Durell. Froch just smiles
01:00:23and continues to move forward.
01:00:25You know, it's intriguing. Strategically,
01:00:27this round favored Froch,
01:00:29but Durell won the round,
01:00:31and that's pretty amazing here in round 11.
01:00:33Yes, it is.
01:00:35Durell still punching.
01:00:37Unloading now, the end of the 11th.
01:00:39One round remaining.
01:00:45Worry on the face
01:00:49of the ladies.
01:00:55This was a telling moment
01:00:57in this fight. Durell making
01:00:59Froch miss a lot,
01:01:01and then coming out of that with a vengeance
01:01:03with a big left hook
01:01:05that pushed Froch back.
01:01:07He took the pushed Froch back
01:01:09and then standing there.
01:01:11He doesn't go anywhere.
01:01:13A moment of bravado
01:01:15for Andre Durell.
01:01:17He got to go.
01:01:19Andre Durell.
01:01:25Don't let him get no lucky shit on you.
01:01:27Get his ass.
01:01:29Get a wall.
01:01:312, 10, 7.
01:01:33Yes.
01:01:35Back him up.
01:01:47The 12th and final round.
01:01:49Leon Lawson telling
01:01:51Andre Durell, his grandson,
01:01:53he won't get a decision here.
01:01:55You better go out and knock him out.
01:02:01Well, the young kid has arrived.
01:02:03Like you're supposed to go out and fight
01:02:05championship rounds.
01:02:07Take my hat off to him.
01:02:11Interesting advice,
01:02:13given the fact that Durell,
01:02:15we assume,
01:02:17that isn't the best way for him
01:02:19to fight against Froch, except
01:02:21when he had the last round of round 11
01:02:23that was a brawl, he ended up winning the round.
01:02:25Of course, the judges from Italy, Mexico, and Belgium,
01:02:27they are international, but
01:02:29we are in England.
01:02:31Durell, a new territory.
01:02:33The first time he's gone 12.
01:02:37And the pace of Froch has slowed
01:02:39a bit as well right now in this round.
01:02:41He's not attacking with wild
01:02:43abandon.
01:02:53Uppercut landing by Durell.
01:02:55Froch
01:02:57steps back on the ropes and lands
01:02:59a good uppercut of his own.
01:03:01And that's the first time we've seen a good uppercut
01:03:03from Froch, and many of his knockouts
01:03:05in previous fights have been with that uppercut,
01:03:07not been able to land it against Durell.
01:03:09A minute and 30 remaining
01:03:11in the 12th and final round.
01:03:15A nervous tension in this crowd.
01:03:17The crowd never quite got into this fight
01:03:19because Froch didn't put together enough rallies.
01:03:21The WBC
01:03:23super middleweight title on the line.
01:03:25The champion, Carl Froch,
01:03:27here in Nottingham,
01:03:29in black, the challenger,
01:03:31Andre Durell in green.
01:03:35Durell, left hand!
01:03:37He leads in on Froch.
01:03:39Andre Durell fighting until the very end.
01:03:43Under a minute.
01:03:47Pivotal moment. Remember the point deduction
01:03:49in this fight. Will that be
01:03:51the difference? Durell has fought
01:03:53rounds 11 and 12 very
01:03:55well for a fighter who has never been
01:03:57to this territory.
01:03:59He said he was ready.
01:04:01Forget the jet lag question.
01:04:05Whether he got here
01:04:077 days before or 3 weeks before,
01:04:09Andre Durell was ready to fight 12 rounds.
01:04:13It just never gave Froch an opportunity
01:04:15to truly land anything big.
01:04:17I mean, he's winging away,
01:04:19but nothing's landing.
01:04:21One big left hook and an occasional right hand,
01:04:23and that's about it.
01:04:2515 seconds remaining.
01:04:27Now,
01:04:29this round 12's a pretty close round.
01:04:31Let's see who finishes
01:04:33off strong. Durell
01:04:35backpedaling. Durell.
01:04:37Froch closing in.
01:04:39Unloading.
01:04:41Durell, and that's it.
01:04:53Good luck, baby.
01:04:55Good job.
01:05:09Now Froch
01:05:11will now leave it
01:05:13in the hands of the judges.
01:05:15Andre Durell
01:05:17does 12 rounds for the first time.
01:05:19Durell does 12 rounds for the first time.
01:05:23Looks sharp, crisp, composed.
01:05:27Did do some moving in the ring.
01:05:29Held and was deducted
01:05:31a point.
01:05:33But he came on strong
01:05:35in the end.
01:05:43Karl Froch wanted to demonstrate
01:05:45to American audiences,
01:05:47especially that he had
01:05:49a higher skill level than
01:05:51they were led to believe. He did not accomplish
01:05:53that tonight because it
01:05:55wasn't a skillful performance by him.
01:05:57It really wasn't. Not at all. I mean, he never
01:05:59could get his feet up under him for the power shots.
01:06:01His punches just looked like
01:06:03he was winging them instead of throwing them
01:06:05with his body underneath him. And he
01:06:07had opportunities. I mean, Durell was
01:06:09reaching a lot late in the end of the
01:06:11fight. He had opportunities, just could never
01:06:13capitalize. You're totally correct,
01:06:15that's exactly true. And
01:06:17part of the reason
01:06:19why I think the
01:06:21technique of Froch
01:06:23wasn't so good is the quickness
01:06:25of Andre Durell, which affected him
01:06:27most definitely.
01:06:41Points are at stake right now
01:06:43in this tournament, and
01:06:45this crowd is nervous
01:06:47as I move fighters inside the ring.
01:06:53Alright, let's get the
01:06:55official decision
01:06:57from our ring announcer,
01:06:59Jimmy Lennon Jr.
01:07:03Ladies and gentlemen,
01:07:05after 12
01:07:07rounds of action,
01:07:09we have a split
01:07:11decision.
01:07:17Judge at ringside, Alejandro Brochin
01:07:19scores the bout 114
01:07:21to 113
01:07:23in favor of
01:07:25Andre Durell.
01:07:31Judge at ringside, Massimo Barrovecchio
01:07:33scores the bout 115
01:07:35to 112
01:07:37in favor of
01:07:39Karl Froch.
01:07:45Judge at ringside, Daniel Van Der Veel
01:07:47scores the bout 115
01:07:49to 112
01:07:51in favor of
01:07:53the winner
01:07:55and still
01:07:57champion,
01:07:59the
01:08:01Paul
01:08:03Froch!
01:08:09Karl Froch
01:08:11retains his
01:08:13WBC
01:08:15super middleweight title
01:08:17with a split decision
01:08:19over Andre Durell.
01:08:23And the difficulty I think
01:08:25with that, and of course remember
01:08:27there was a point deducted
01:08:29at one point, but he would have still won
01:08:31the fight of Karl Froch. I think the
01:08:33difficulty some will have with the split decision
01:08:35is the 115-112
01:08:37split decision. I think you could see
01:08:39it being a point closer
01:08:41but that's
01:08:43two judges having it by three
01:08:45points for him is where some
01:08:47and certainly Durell's supporters will
01:08:49have issues. Well I know
01:08:51as an experienced fighter myself
01:08:53I mean you never know what these
01:08:55judges are looking for. I mean
01:08:57some judges really admire
01:08:59the aggressive fighter that's pressing
01:09:01the fight, that's making the fight.
01:09:03And my hat goes off to Durell.
01:09:05He fought his fight, they gave him
01:09:07the blueprint, he executed. I thought
01:09:09he did more of the things that he should have did
01:09:11in order to be successful in life.
01:09:21That's his mom, Lola, in the middle.
01:09:23Not a happy
01:09:25trip for them. We were with them at the hotel
01:09:27a lot leading up to this
01:09:29now it doesn't end so well. You know,
01:09:31it was a close fight, make no mistake about it
01:09:33and you can make the case for Carl Froch winning.
01:09:35I think that margin on the two judges
01:09:37scorecards is what will bother people
01:09:39and you
01:09:41hit it on the head Antonio. What did they like
01:09:43in this fight?
01:09:45And our Jim Gray is
01:09:47standing by with Andre
01:09:49Durell. Alright Gus
01:09:51thank you very much. Andre what is
01:09:53your reaction to that decision? Well
01:09:55we know who we are, we're hometown favorite.
01:09:57I worked my ass off.
01:09:59He came on strong in the last round
01:10:01but I know I put it off enough.
01:10:03I boxed enough to gain
01:10:05a decision but it didn't go my way.
01:10:07The point that was taken
01:10:09away from you. Did you feel
01:10:11as though there were many times in this fight where
01:10:13Froch could have had a point deducted? I still don't know
01:10:15why he took the point from me. I'm still
01:10:17clueless on the point for leaning on him.
01:10:19He been holding me, hitting me in the back of the head the whole
01:10:21time, bringing me down to one knee.
01:10:23He been rough the whole fight man.
01:10:25If he didn't take a point from me without no warning, I don't
01:10:27remember warning him telling me
01:10:29to not lean on him.
01:10:31He took the point for that but like I said
01:10:33we know where we at man but I'm going to hold my head up with pride
01:10:35because I know one day I'm going to still become world champion.
01:10:37Your grandfather told you
01:10:39going into the last round that you needed a knockout.
01:10:41Did you ever feel as though you
01:10:43would have an opportunity to win a decision
01:10:45here in Nottingham? Of course I did
01:10:47otherwise wouldn't have came out here. Like I said I'd do anything
01:10:49for that WBC world title belt.
01:10:51This is the first one.
01:10:53I got another fight next.
01:10:55This ain't going to motivate me and make me work harder.
01:10:57Like I said the most dangerous one
01:10:59is the one who got that loss first.
01:11:01What did you learn in this fight?
01:11:03First time you went 12 rounds, obviously
01:11:05you could have won a decision had it gone another round
01:11:07or judging saw it a little differently.
01:11:09What did you learn? Well two judges didn't get
01:11:11it extreme, I don't understand it
01:11:13but that I
01:11:15can go to full 12. I can work my ass
01:11:17when need be and
01:11:19I'm a warrior you know.
01:11:21But like I said
01:11:23we in this on time, he got this decision.
01:11:25He didn't say nothing for us, he tried.
01:11:27How will you handle this disappointment?
01:11:29Get in the gym and work harder, what else can I do?
01:11:31This is what I do, this is my sport, this is my life and I love it.
01:11:33Arthur Abraham had a big victory
01:11:35tonight against Taylor
01:11:37over in Berlin. He will be your next
01:11:39opponent. I know you probably haven't thought much about
01:11:41that. However here's another guy that's
01:11:43powerful and obviously displayed
01:11:45that this evening. Yes he did.
01:11:47He's a warrior.
01:11:49I'm sure my fight will be a lot tougher
01:11:51going against Abraham.
01:11:53I got to get in the gym and put in that
01:11:55extra mile.
01:11:57You got a lot to say to Fratch during this
01:11:59fight. What were you talking about? Basically
01:12:01just hold my head and him couldn't handle
01:12:03me as far as boxing went.
01:12:05But he was pulling on me, he was holding
01:12:07me. He was knocking me down.
01:12:09He got the decision, he fought rough.
01:12:11Did you grow up a lot in your own mind
01:12:13tonight? A lot, yes I did.
01:12:15Like I said, 12 rounds is crucial
01:12:17and 12 rounds is hard. I know I trained
01:12:19for it.
01:12:21You know I just got to get out there.
01:12:23I got to get in the gym now and
01:12:25execute my game plan a little better.
01:12:27What happens is what happens tonight
01:12:29and I definitely will learn from it.
01:12:31Andre, terrific performance and we will see you
01:12:33next round. Thank you. Alright.
01:12:35We'll have Carl Fratch in just a moment. Let's go back over to Gus Johnson.
01:12:37Alright Jim,
01:12:39let's see how the scoring
01:12:41went for Fratch and Durrell.
01:12:43We look at the
01:12:45Italian judge Bervecchio
01:12:47who had a wide margin as did
01:12:49Van de Veel. 115-112.
01:12:51Relatively wide for Carl Fratch.
01:12:53And Alejandro Rochin
01:12:55scoring it for Durrell, liking his
01:12:57boxing despite the point deduction
01:12:59making Durrell the winner by 8 points.
01:13:03Unofficially on press
01:13:05row. All of these
01:13:07writers, well two of them from
01:13:09Britain, Claude Abraham with Boxing News
01:13:11he had it for Fratch.
01:13:13Neil Hickman who is from
01:13:15the Express here also had it for
01:13:17Fratch. However Jeff Powell, a very
01:13:19revered writer here in England
01:13:21had the fight a draw. And I think
01:13:23that kind of scoring just feels
01:13:25a little more appropriate either way you look at it
01:13:27than maybe the 115-112 scores.
01:13:33So Carl Fratch retains
01:13:35his title. He did it the
01:13:37hard way. Not a very pretty
01:13:39fight for Carl Fratch. However
01:13:41he walks out of the ring victorious
01:13:43and he's standing ringside with our
01:13:45William Gray.
01:13:47Alright Gus, thank you very much. Carl,
01:13:49your reaction? Did you feel as though you won this fight?
01:13:51Yeah, I definitely felt I won the fight
01:13:53from round 1 through to round 12. I got
01:13:55hit with a couple of shots
01:13:57rushing in when I went wide with a few shots.
01:13:59I walked into a very very fast
01:14:01left counter punch. Let's not forget
01:14:03Andre Durrell. He's a very fast
01:14:05very quick hand. He's got a good range
01:14:07and he's a great fighter. Now
01:14:09if you put speed and timing
01:14:11and accuracy together
01:14:13and negativity, which is what I was tonight, negativity
01:14:15then you can survive against anybody. He didn't
01:14:17want to stand and fight. The minute I got close
01:14:19quarters and tried to rough him up and make a
01:14:21fight of it, the fight which I want to be involved
01:14:23in, he either jumped on the floor
01:14:25got shoved on the floor, complained to the referee
01:14:27held on. Every excuse in the book really.
01:14:29So, you know, what am I supposed to do?
01:14:31If he's not going to stand and fight like a man, like a
01:14:33warrior, then all I can do is take what's there.
01:14:35I took what's there and I'm still champion.
01:14:37So I'm happy. That was a comfortable night for me.
01:14:39I'm really really... I've got no aches and pains.
01:14:41I'm not damaged. I think I walked on to one or two
01:14:43shots. I can't believe it was a split decision.
01:14:45But there you go. That was one point by the
01:14:47Mexican judge. You can't believe that
01:14:49it's a split decision. Then would you be able
01:14:51to understand in any way how he feels
01:14:53that he got a hometown decision and that the only reason
01:14:55that you won is because we're here in Nottingham?
01:14:57No, that's nonsense. That's nonsense.
01:14:59He's got to come back with something.
01:15:01Excuse me. He's got to come back with something.
01:15:03But you know, he's a proud
01:15:05fighter and if he wants to make an excuse
01:15:07then he can make an excuse. But all the fans
01:15:09tonight will probably agree with me
01:15:11that not just because they're hometown fans... Of course they will.
01:15:13They're here. They're for you. This is your town.
01:15:15Not just hometown fans. My fans come to
01:15:17see a fight. They know what I'm capable of. They know what I can do.
01:15:19And I wasn't able to show what I can do tonight
01:15:21because the minute I stood close quarters
01:15:23and tried to have a trade-off, he leaned right back
01:15:25and ran and at times
01:15:27jumped on the floor. I didn't even really
01:15:29manhandle him like I could because the referee was on my case.
01:15:31It was a dissatisfying
01:15:33night for me but a comfortable enough night.
01:15:35I'm still champion and I picked up two points
01:15:37in a fabulous Super 6 tournament.
01:15:39So, you know, there's
01:15:41pluses and negatives to come from that fight.
01:15:43Did you feel as though you should have been awarded
01:15:45one of those points for fouling
01:15:47when in many instances
01:15:49could have been the opposite? It could have gone either way.
01:15:51I don't know if you saw the low blow that Jermaine Taylor
01:15:53suffered tonight. That was a point decision.
01:15:55A point deducted. He stands for the referee.
01:15:57Andre Durell was holding non-stop.
01:15:59If he's going to duck low, I'm going to hit him on the back
01:16:01of the head because it's there to be hit. That's fighting. That's boxing.
01:16:03If he's going to give me the side of his head,
01:16:05I'm going to take it. Not illegally, but because he's
01:16:07ducking low, it's the only thing you can take.
01:16:09So what am I supposed to do? Stand there and wait for him to come up?
01:16:11Because he comes up with a great left hook and he caught me
01:16:13with one of them. So I've got to be careful in there.
01:16:15I'm in there to win the fight and winning is what I did tonight.
01:16:17I'm not 100% satisfied because
01:16:19I like to feel like I've been in a fight and I feel like
01:16:21I could go back in there and do another 12 rounds of Andre Durell
01:16:23and beat him again.
01:16:25Carl, you will now have
01:16:27Mikel Kessler coming up next.
01:16:29I know it's a little early to be thinking about that
01:16:31but there are those who had thought and even you
01:16:33in our production meeting was looking
01:16:35somewhat ahead because you didn't feel as though that this
01:16:37was going to be the ultimate test.
01:16:39What are your thoughts on facing Kessler next?
01:16:41I'm looking forward to fighting Kessler. There you've got a proud warrior
01:16:43who will stand and have a fight and he will exchange
01:16:45blows. He will stand toe-to-toe with me.
01:16:47At times, he's a good boxer. He moves well
01:16:49and he's got slick skills but
01:16:51at times he will stand and have a trade-up with me
01:16:53and that's what the fans want to see.
01:16:55That's what the Super 6 is all about. People fighting
01:16:57to be winners and to achieve the
01:16:59goal of becoming the undisputed champion,
01:17:01the undisputed champion and super middleweight champion
01:17:03of the world and Mikel Kessler will bring that fight.
01:17:05That will be a massive fight. I've got a slippery little sucker
01:17:07out the way there in Andre Durell.
01:17:09He's a good fighter but he was very slippery
01:17:11and he'll come back. He'll come again but
01:17:13he'll never beat the Cobra.
01:17:15Carl, congratulations to you. We enjoyed being here
01:17:17in Nottingham. Thanks for having us and
01:17:19good luck in your next fight. I'll see you soon. Thank you very much.
01:17:21All right, Gus, back over to you.
01:17:23All right, let's take a look
01:17:25at the standings. Two down,
01:17:27one more to go.
01:17:29Andre Durell has won. Yeah, I'm off to a
01:17:31big start with the knockout
01:17:33victory and Carl Fratsch with
01:17:35a decision, split decision,
01:17:37getting the two points
01:17:39and it's very interesting
01:17:41because what Andre Durell showed
01:17:43even though he didn't win a point was he belongs
01:17:45in this tournament.
01:17:49Gus Johnson along with Al Bernstein
01:17:51and Antonio Tarver and Antonio we'll start
01:17:53with you. Your reaction
01:17:55to Carl Fratsch's victory
01:17:57and the way Andre Durell
01:17:59fought this evening? I thought that
01:18:01Carl Fratsch did have some points.
01:18:03Durell did a lot of holding.
01:18:05If you look at his fights in the past,
01:18:07he has been a fighter that has fallen
01:18:09down in the ring numerous
01:18:11times. He has run in the past
01:18:13but he did show terrific hand
01:18:15speed, some great skill, and
01:18:17also composure and stamina.
01:18:19Most definitely. I mean, you have to take your hat
01:18:21off to the champion, Fratsch. I mean, he
01:18:23kept coming. He pressed the fight
01:18:25and sometimes you just
01:18:27don't know what the judges are looking for.
01:18:29I mean, if they're looking for aggressive
01:18:31pressure boxing, then
01:18:33you have to go with Fratsch. If you're looking
01:18:35for skill, movement,
01:18:37and a lot of boxing ability, then you go
01:18:39with Durell. So you just never
01:18:41know what the judges are looking for tonight, but I say
01:18:43this for Durell. He proved tonight
01:18:45that he belonged in the top six,
01:18:47the super six classic.
01:18:49In our first fight of the evening,
01:18:51Arthur Abraham, a 12th
01:18:53down, incredible knockout
01:18:55with Jermaine Taylor. First of all, Jermaine
01:18:57Taylor, by the way, was taken to the hospital
01:18:59after the fight, suffering
01:19:01from a concussion, and they are
01:19:03just observing him for this
01:19:05evening in Berlin, but
01:19:07Arthur Abraham out of the gate quickly. He
01:19:09has three points. He gets two for a win, one
01:19:11for a knockout, and boy, what a
01:19:13knockout it was. It was vintage
01:19:15Arthur Abraham in the sense that
01:19:17he used that defense, he used
01:19:19his bursts of power, and
01:19:21the fight went almost exactly
01:19:23to script as we would have thought it would.
01:19:25And by the way, let me mention about this fight,
01:19:27you know, if Carl Fratch wasn't a fighter, he'd be a
01:19:29lawyer, wouldn't he? He talks as good
01:19:31a game as he fights. You know,
01:19:33he spoke his piece very well at the end.
01:19:35That's right. All right, Al, great working
01:19:37with you as always, and Antonio,
01:19:39terrific insight on tonight's
01:19:41fight. Special thanks to Steve
01:19:43Albert and Steve Farhut in Berlin.
