00:01Meanwhile Donald Curry was cleaning up his half of the division. Finally after his win over Marlon Starling the war of words began
00:10Curry installed a second fight in Atlantic City. I should have been a press conference
00:14I challenged him at the press conference to come on and fight and I don't learn something out. I called him Bow Wow
00:20He's Bow Wow
00:22That was the word. I mean, I still think he's chicken. I you know, I won't believe it until I see him in the ring
00:29Believe it or not on April 14th the night before Hagler met Hearns these two rehearsed in the center of the ring
00:36We was playing around but he was so what size of me up by saying that boy if I was on the inside
00:43I eat the ribs up
00:44That's the first time I've ever been in a ring with with Milton and I was kind of sizing him up a little bit of
00:49What I can do to him and what he couldn't do to me. I caught him by saying there's only a dream
00:54You never get this close to me and I said one of these days
00:57Oh, I'm gonna get you here when I do look out
01:00Cuz here I come and finally these undefeated champions will meet for real
01:06We're live from the Hilton Center in Las Vegas, Nevada
01:09Where HBO Sports presents world championship boxing tonight?
01:14The World Walloway championship will unify the title as WBA and IBF champion Donald Curry meets
01:22WBC champion Milton McCrory, it's scheduled for 12 round
01:28This is the new Las Vegas Hilton Center
01:30It seats 8,500 and is adjacent to the room where history was made some seven years ago
01:36It was on February 15th of 1978 an Olympic gold medalist Leon Spinks with only seven pro fights to his credit
01:44Shocked the boxing world by dethroning the legendary Muhammad Ali
01:52Of the heavyweight championship
01:57And now over seven years later the Hilton is the site for another historic matchup to undefeated champions fight for one
02:06undisputed title
02:09Hello everybody, I'm Barry Tompkins as always along with the champ Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Merchant
02:14This one's for the whole ball to wax the undisputed welterweight championship of the world and Ray Leonard
02:20It's interesting that both Milton McCrory and Donald Curry have said they've been fighting in a closet under a 50 watt light bulb
02:25Both men have said readily
02:27They need a quality opponent to gain respect and this could be the one that could really do it for one of them
02:32Well Barry, this is much more than just unification of titles
02:35That's a matter of economics and I say that because quite naturally the winner will be able to demand more money and the recognition that
02:41He will receive will make him just a little more marketable and I'm able to reminisce quite some four years ago
02:46I think Thomas Irwin's here. So the anticipation is great. He is very tense because they were going for all the marbles
02:52So this fight is will bring the best out in both fighters Larry Merchant. It's interesting
02:56I think and I cannot remember when a champion and an undefeated champion at that
03:01Was more than a three-to-one underdog and yet that's the case tonight for Milton McCrory
03:05Well, the short answer is that more people think curry is going to win then think that McCrory is going to win
03:11The longer version of that story is that it is a puzzlement
03:15Milton McCrory is a champion and champions are hard to beat and he's unbeaten and an unbeaten fighter is hard to beat and
03:22His hit-and-run tactics just might neutralize curry if he were to give curry the fight of his life
03:27It wouldn't register on the Richter scale as a major shock
03:31Yet the bottom line on the line is this McCrory is regarded as a good fighter
03:38Curry is regarded as
03:40Possibly a great fighter and that's what we're here to see tonight
03:44Well, in fact, there are a lot of people are who feel that this could conceivably be the best fight of 1985
03:50Well, if it's going to be that it's got to be a pretty good fight because boxing has made big news in the year
03:561985
04:011985 began with the return of the macho, man
04:05In January Hector Camacho entered the ring after an eight-month layoff due to managerial and rumored drug problems
04:13Come on show showed very little ring rust as he celebrated the new year with a TKO in the fifth round over a game
04:20Louie Burke
04:23In Birmingham, England welterweight champion Donald Curry also found reason to celebrate his fourth round TKO over hometown favorite
04:30Colin Jones showed the world that curry was king of the WBA and the IVF
04:37February brought the rematch in Reno WBA lightweight champion Livingstone Bramble defended the crown
04:43He lifted from Ray Mancini just eight months earlier. It was a fight to the finish
04:50I would hate to be a judge
04:52Oh
05:02Bramble kept the WBA title Mancini would never be the same again
05:06It was just a matter of time before he would heed the wishes of loved ones
05:11No, man, it's his decision
05:15But if it's up to me, I've come to forget about it
05:19March blew in with chilling news about three of the greatest Latin fighters
05:23It was rumored Duran was broke as well as former champions Wilfred Benitez
05:30And Alexis Arguello
05:32There were also rumors of attempted comebacks
05:34The man who sent Arguello into retirement Aaron Pryor was back with his second fight in two years
05:39He defended his IBF junior welterweight title over Gary Hinton
05:42But soon after the boxing world would ask was this the Hawks last fight?
05:47Larry Holmes claimed that this fight against David Bay would be his last and with the TKO in the 10th
05:52Holmes stood by his claim that this was it with one exception
05:59This is it means I retired if I don't get an offer from me from Michael Sphinx by
06:07In the April
06:09I retired
06:11April was marked by what has been called
06:141985 greatest fight marvelous Marvin Hagler put his undisputed middleweight crown on the line against Thomas hit man Hearns
06:22Say again, good luck to both fight
06:25Working that jab he has a very quick jab. There's no denying
06:28In
06:38Hackers own words
06:39This was war and he went to work when he had to turn strictly found out the marvelous one was no April fool
06:46This third round TKO was no contest
06:51IBF lightweight champion Harry Arroyo was fooled by the ability of challenger
06:55Jimmy Paul Arroyo was knocked down three times and Paul walked away with a unanimous decision and the lightweight crown
07:02The WBA heavyweight crown also changed hands in his first defense since winning the title from Jerry Coetzee
07:08Greg Page lost it to Tony Tubbs
07:11confusion in the heavyweight division continued
07:15May brought Larry Holmes back to the ring
07:1840
07:22But Big Daddy wasn't facing Sphinx instead
07:25It was Carl Williams the two heavyweights battled it out for 15 rounds
07:28The young Williams hurt the older homes and although he kept his title the truth was that Larry had seen better days
07:35And it was written all over his face
07:37And since Jerry Cooney fought less than 10 rounds in 36 months
07:41It seems he came out of retirement to retire in San Juan WBA junior lightweight champion
07:47Rocky Lockridge retired too soon
07:49Wilfredo Gomez snatched his title proving that in order to beat a hometown boxer you got to knock him out for Gomez
07:55It was title number three
07:57In June Barry McGuigan was looking for title number one
08:01With dad's rendition of Danny boy the hometown hero went to work and his job was to capture the WBA featherweight title from Eusebio
08:08Pedroza after 15 rounds boxing's fastest rising star had dethroned
08:14Boxing's longest reigning champion with all the emotion of a fairy tale come true
08:24June also brought the first title defense for WBC heavyweight champion Pinklin Thomas
08:29Former heavyweight champion Mike Weaver was knocked down in round one and Thomas retained his crown
08:37And it took eight rounds for light heavyweight champion Michael Sphinx the TKO Jim McDonald
08:42Sphinx continued to dominate his weight class and made no secret of his intentions to move up and challenge Larry Holmes
08:57a
08:58man wanted by the police surfaced in July
09:01Roberto Medina aka John E Garcia was recognized by a rose tattoo on his chest when he fought gold medalist Meldrick Taylor
09:10Medina lost not only the fight but his freedom as well
09:13on that same night Pernell Whitaker TKO John Sinigau
09:18Evander Holyfield defeated Tyrone booze and Mark Breland TKO Don Shiner
09:26In Monte Carlo WBC welterweight champion Milton McCrory took on number one contender Carlos Trujillo
09:32For the quarry fans the odds were stacked in his favor and he quickly paid off as he put Trujillo away in
09:38Three the unification fight was just a matter of time
09:44In August it was macho time again as Hector Camacho tried to capture his second world title
09:50Champion Jose Luis Ramirez was dazzled for 12 rounds by the flashy contender and was knocked down in the third
09:57Camacho's glitter continued to sparkle, but hopes were doused of a Mancini confrontation when Ray decided to quit
10:07And a match with Aaron Pryor was also never to be Pryor's drug-related activities outside the ring proved to be his eventual undoing
10:15He had become his own worst enemy
10:18And in August it was confirmed that Arguello was again putting on the gloves
10:22I'm ready and I'm willing to do it and I'm let's see how far I can go
10:27A flamboyant Lonnie Smith knocked down champion Billy Costello five times in an eighth round knockout Smith claimed the WBC
10:34Super lightweight title and sent Costello into retirement at least for 1985
10:43In September Michael Spinks finally made a heavyweight out of himself
10:47And Larry Holmes was on hand to meet his challenge both fighters hoped to make history
10:52Spinks was trying to become the first light heavyweight to capture the heavyweight crown while Holmes was chasing the legend of Rocky Marciano
11:02For the winner and new
11:06Realizing the new mortality had eluded him a disappointed Holmes disappointed his fans
11:11Really want to get techno about the whole thing
11:15Rocky couldn't carry my jockstrap
11:18In October WBC featherweight champion Azuma Nelson of Ghana got one step closer to a unification fight with WBA champion Barry McGuigan
11:27When he delivered a devastating uppercut to knock out England's Pat Coddell in the opening round
11:31Meanwhile Marvelous Marvin Hagler claimed injury and backed out of his fight with John Mugabe
11:36In November all the boxing news came from out of the ring Don King praised America as he was absolved of any wrongdoing in the tax charges brought against him
11:47And after nearly two decades in prison former WBC heavyweight champion Barry McGuigan was sentenced to six years in prison
11:55And after nearly two decades in prison former middleweight Reuben Hurricane Carter was freed from a New Jersey jail
12:02Sadly though the boxing world mourned the passing of Customato
12:07Which brings us to December and tonight's unification bout between Donald Curry and Milton McCrory
12:15And so we await the start of only the third unification fight during the 1980s
12:21There was Spinks Kauai and of course there was Leonard Hearns
12:25And tonight McCrory Curry for the welterweight title
12:28And Ray let's talk about Donald Curry it's been said styles make fights
12:32And Donald Curry is a guy really who hasn't shown any one style
12:35He's been a puncher, he's been a boxer, he's been a counter puncher
12:38We don't really know who's going to show up tonight
12:40Well that's what makes Donald Curry such a special fighter
12:43He's able to adapt to any particular style
12:45And I've been impressed with Donald Curry the first time I saw him
12:47Because he's grown, he's mature, he's got a lot of experience
12:50He's a very intelligent boxer
12:52And I see him taking the fight to McCrory
12:54Working inside because he's a better inside fighter than Milton McCrory
12:58Well Donald Curry has been called pound for pound the best fighter of his time
13:02It's just that nobody seems to know it
13:04He's a very quiet guy, a very sensitive guy
13:07And tonight he's on a mission to prove the optimists right
13:20Donald Curry
13:38Donald Curry
13:40A 24 year old whose story began in a small home just outside of downtown Fort Worth
13:44He was raised by his mother Hazel
13:46While Donald dreamed of playing for the nearby Cowboys
13:48He settled on a different sport
13:50This guy named Wes Parker used to come up in his big truck
13:54And everybody used to jump in the back of it and go off to the gym
13:58And I just followed the crowd to the gym
14:01And I happened to be good at it and kept with it
14:04And after 400 amateur fights and the 1980 Olympic boycott
14:09Donald turned professional
14:11I think if I had went to the Olympics and won the gold medal and got everything soon
14:15I don't think I would have been as disciplined as I am now
14:19As a fighter, as a trainer
14:21I wouldn't have it no other way because I came up
14:24I was a hungry fighter, I'm still hungry
14:27And it makes me work harder
14:29Then in his 16th pro fight he won the welterweight title
14:32His purse, $75,000
14:35I still didn't think nothing of the boycott
14:38Of missing out on the Olympics
14:40Until I won the world title
14:42When I beat John Sokwang
14:44Then it started coming all back to me
14:46Wow, what an opportunity that I missed
14:49And I was kind of upset but there was nothing I could do about it
14:52So I just continued to win as a professional
14:55As welterweight champion, his road to glory was haunted by personal problems
14:59In 1984, Donald Curry fought off three welterweight challengers
15:03And family tragedies which at times seemed too much to endure
15:07Older brother Bruce had won the WBC junior welterweight title
15:10But in 1984 he lost it to Billy Costello
15:13Afterwards he fired a gun at his trainer Jesse Reed
15:16And was found not guilty by reason of insanity
15:19I had read a little bit about it in the paper
15:22But it didn't affect me like I thought it was
15:25I used it more as a motivating factor
15:27I think one, probably the biggest asset about Don Curry
15:31Is that I have a strong mental mind
15:34No one can pause in this mind
15:36Because if you pause in the mind you can easily be defeated
15:38The day that I heard about it
15:41It was like two days before I was fighting Marlon Stall
15:45In the most important fight of my career
15:48While Donald struggled to continue
15:50A judge sent Bruce to a psychiatric hospital
15:53As if it wasn't enough, more bad fortune followed
15:56In August of that same year
15:58Donald's 18 year old sister Angela
16:00Was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident
16:03And Don was actually out in front of the club
16:05Visiting with some of his friends
16:08When there was a motorcycle accident
16:11Just up the street here
16:13He actually saw the accident
16:15Not knowing at the time that his sister was involved
16:18And of course he rushed to the hospital
16:20Where she was fatally injured
16:23It was like I was paralyzed, I couldn't move
16:25I stayed in bed, I didn't eat anything
16:27I lost a lot of weight
16:29I just couldn't do anything
16:31But after the two weeks that passed
16:33It wasn't doing me any good
16:35I had to talk to myself
16:37I was laying in bed talking to myself
16:39What I'm doing is doing no good for me
16:42She would want me to continue on
16:44To do the best I can in boxing
16:46And win this and win that
16:48Take care of Hassan Michael
16:50And I think he was probably
16:52The biggest turnaround for me
16:54For his motivation
16:56And wanting to continue my career
17:05The Medal Toughness of Donald Curry
17:07Is testimony to the ordeals
17:09He and his family have met
17:11Head on
17:36And tonight is Donald Curry's biggest night
17:39This for the undisputed Welderweight Championship
17:42You know it was more than five years ago
17:44That Larry Merchant saw a young Donald Curry fight
17:46Called his friends and said
17:48I've just seen the future Welderweight Champion
17:50He's been talking about him ever since
17:52And will continue to do so right now
17:54Larry
17:56All week long people have been asking me
17:58To describe Donald Curry to them
18:00To suggest a fighter that he resembles
18:02And I've been saying
18:03Well he's a pure boxer-puncher
18:05No ruffles, no shuffles
18:07And then I've been adding
18:09Almost apologetically
18:11That he sort of reminds me a little bit of
18:13Well, Sugar Ray Robinson
18:16Even now it's very hard to say
18:18It's sort of like describing your new house
18:20As a little bit like the Taj Mahal
18:23Maybe his mother put it best
18:25After seeing him play ball
18:27She said all the other kids were making the noise
18:29He was just being good
18:31No frills, no embellishment
18:33In or out of the ring
18:35If he were an actor
18:37He wouldn't chew on the scenery
18:39If he were Jules
18:41He'd be a perfect string of pearls
18:43That's why there's no magic or drama
18:45Attached to him
18:47At least as yet
18:49But with his ability
18:51As well as his ambition and his passion
18:53That too will come
18:55But it's also a danger
18:57When you take the curve at high speed
18:59You may run into a wall
19:01Or a left hook
19:03And your opponent
19:05Is someone like Milton McCrory
19:07Who merely wants to be the best he can be
19:09But who's laying in the weeds
19:11Waiting to pounce
19:13On a first mistake
19:15When you think of Detroit
19:17What do you think of?
19:19An automobile plant most likely
19:21When the subject changes to boxing
19:23It's Tommy Hearns
19:25Who probably first comes to mind
19:27But now there's another big wheel in Detroit
19:29His name
19:31Milton McCrory
19:34If you didn't know the difference
19:36You might think this was
19:38Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous
19:40If it was
19:42This week's show might include Larry Holmes
19:44Giving us a tour of his estate
19:46In Eastern Pennsylvania
19:48And Hector Camacho
19:50Visiting the beaches of Southern California
19:52It is the unusual life
19:54Of many boxing champions
19:56We'd also take a look at Milton McCrory
19:58What makes him so unusual?
20:00Just the fact that he's
20:01So usual
20:03While many boxers have come from
20:05Broken families and neighborhoods
20:07Which support fighting
20:09Such was not the case with this boxer
20:11We was never forced to box
20:13Or to look for boxers
20:15To make a quick living
20:17No we didn't need that
20:19The McCrorys were your basic middle class family
20:21Who brought up their six children
20:23In a very middle class neighborhood of Detroit
20:25So then why would Milton
20:27Ever become a boxer?
20:29There's a lot of guys that live on this block
20:31You know we all around the same age
20:33And we was all into different sports
20:35We all played a lot of sports together
20:37Football, baseball
20:39And then my friend Jimmy Paul
20:41He started boxing
20:43He told us some stories
20:45And we started boxing too
20:47There was about ten of us
20:49Went down to the gym to box
20:51In the end the block produced
20:53Somewhat of a championship stable of boxers
20:55Today Jimmy Paul is the IBF lightweight champion
20:57And Milton's younger brother Steve
20:59Who recently turned pro
21:01The ring was not where young
21:03Milton McCrory had hoped to be
21:07A four-sided diamond was more like it
21:10I said in my heart I want to be
21:12A world champion baseball player
21:14But I'm a world champion boxer
21:16I'm in the wrong sport
21:18But I know the truth of the matter
21:20Is that I'm the champion of boxing
21:22I'm proud of it though
21:24Some dreams may never die
21:26But perhaps it would be very safe
21:28To say that Milton certainly
21:29Made the right decision
21:32In 1983 he defeated
21:34Colin Jones of England
21:36To win the welterweight title
21:38Yet that has not seemed to change
21:40The new champion's lifestyle
21:42In or out of the ring
21:44Upon becoming champion
21:46Many boxers become the owners
21:48Of castle-like homes
21:50Parading entourages
21:52And overbearing jewelry
21:54Such has not been the case
21:56Of champion Milton McCrory
21:57The word entourage
21:59Is not even a part of his vocabulary
22:01And the only jewelry is a gold chain
22:03Which is as unnoticeable as his presence
22:05I pretty much like to speak
22:07To the same way before I became champion
22:09I like to carry my own gym bag to the gym
22:11I pretty much like to be to myself
22:13And I like to speak with the way
22:15Before I became champion
22:17I just like to be that way
22:19And stay that way now
22:21In a sport that lends itself
22:23To extravagant lifestyles
22:25It's refreshing to see a young man
22:27Achieve goals that he never intended
22:29Or needed to achieve
22:31While there are other dreams
22:33That to this day
22:35He's still hoping to catch
22:39And there he is
22:41Milton McCrory
22:43And we trust that he will do better
22:45At catching punches
22:47Than he does at baseballs
22:49So Milton McCrory
22:51Looking very relaxed
22:53And we should point out Ray
22:55That we saw him I'd say 45 minutes ago
22:57Before a championship fight
22:59And he remains that way right now
23:01Well let me tell you from experience
23:03What it looks like
23:05He's cool and composed
23:07But inside those butterflies
23:09Are just flying around
23:11Milton McCrory a fighter
23:13Who really has something to prove
23:15Perhaps even more than Donald Curry
23:17He's probably even a lesser known champion
23:19Than is Donald Curry
23:21Both men of course are undefeated
23:23And Milton McCrory
23:25Having lost the toss of a coin
23:27Comes in first
23:29There's his record
23:3127 wins, no losses
23:33He had the one draw
23:35That was Collin Jones
23:3722 knockouts
23:39So he can't punch
23:41Most of his knockouts however
23:43Came early on
23:45First 17 opponents
23:47Went the way of the knockout route
23:49So Milton McCrory
23:51Again remaining very cool
23:53Very calm
23:55He was talking about
23:57People like Thomas Hearns
23:59Or Joe Lewis
24:01Might be his heroes
24:03Nope, his hero he says is Al Kaline
24:05Who incidentally caught a baseball
24:07Considerably better
24:09Than Milton McCrory
24:11Meanwhile Donald Curry
24:13And Curry conversely looking all business
24:15And that's what it's all about
24:17Because he seriously knows exactly
24:19What he has to do to be effective
24:21Against McCrory
24:23He knows full well he must be very aggressive
24:25And take the fight to Milton
24:27Let's talk about Curry being all business
24:29He was as early as 8 o'clock this morning
24:31Well I noticed the other day
24:33That he was relaxed
24:35He was confident
24:37But he was coldly angry
24:45That is Akbar Mohammed
24:47Leading Donald Curry into the ring
24:49And Curry stern expression on his face
24:54They call him the Cobra
24:56He is that quick
25:01And there's the record of Donald Curry
25:0323 wins, perfect record
25:06And according to a lot of boxing observers
25:08Getting better with every fight
25:10So Donald Curry is now in the ring
25:12Let's take a look at how these two compare
25:15And the only real difference there
25:17Is the height of Milton McCrory
25:19He's got Donald Curry by 2 1⁄2 inches
25:21But really that is not a significant factor
25:23Everything else very comparable
25:25Between these two
25:27So that is the story
25:29The common opponents of these two fighters
25:31Both rather significant
25:33Roger Stafford
25:35And as you can see Curry knocked him out in one round
25:37While McCrory took 10 to decision him
25:39And Colin Jones
25:41The one draw on McCrory's record
25:43Coming against Colin Jones
25:45Curry it should be pointed out
25:47Fought Colin Jones after those two McCrory fights
25:49And knocked him out in four rounds
25:51And here is our computer toy
25:53Which will give us a quantitative
25:55Rather than a qualitative look at the fight
25:57You see that Donald Curry in these three fights
25:59Threw in the area of 55 punches
26:01And landed about 30 punches a round
26:04A high percentage of landed punches
26:09And here is McCrory
26:11Who is much busier
26:13Throwing a lot of flicking jabs
26:15And landing almost the same number of punches
26:17As his opponent
26:19Let's take a look at the rules in this fight
26:21Once again
26:23The one that really stands out
26:25These WBC rules
26:27The one exception
26:29The three knockdown rule is in effect
26:31Now Donald Curry wanted that rule
26:33And he did get that
26:35So WBC rules with the one exception
26:37Three knockdown rule is in effect
26:39The man is knocked down three times in a round
26:41That is the end of the fight
26:43Right now let's get up to the ring announcer
26:45Chuck Hall for the introduction of these two champions

28:39His opponent
28:41From Fort Worth, Texas
28:43He too weighed 146 and 3 quarter pounds

28:49With 23 wins
28:51No defeats
28:53And 18 KO's
28:55He is the IBF
28:57And WBA
28:59Welterweight champion of the world
29:01Presenting
29:03Donald
29:05The Lone Star Cobra
29:07Curry
29:14Alright
29:16We both have construction in the dressing room
29:18Any questions from Mr. McQuarrie's corner
29:19Or the Chief's second
29:21Any questions from Mr. McQuarrie's corner
29:23Or the Chief's second
29:25Alright let's get it on
29:27Let's get it on
29:29And a word about the odds
29:31You asked me before Barry
29:33What I've learned is that there's been very little
29:35Betting actually on the outcome of the fight
29:37But the odds have gone from even money
29:39To 2 to 1
29:41That it won't go the distance
29:43Some champions in the ring
29:45And everybody's expecting them to put it out there
29:47And try to win
29:49I never saw a fighter as relaxed as Milton McQuarrie
29:51And as intense as Donald Curry
29:53Was the marvelous Marvin Hagler
29:55Versus Tommy Hearns fight
29:57When Hearns came in very relaxed
29:59And Hagler came in all business
30:01Well with Curry he's very serious
30:03And his punches are a lot more accurate
30:05Than McQuarrie
30:07McQuarrie's trying to use that jab
30:09Keep Curry at bay
30:11Keep him on the outside
30:13But see inside Barry
30:15Curry's a much more effective fighter
30:17Curry going downstairs early in the first round
30:19He's timing that jab
30:21That jab of McQuarrie
30:23And coming with the kind of right hand
30:26And another good left hand
30:28McQuarrie is a little tight here
30:31And see Curry's doing the right thing
30:33He's staying right on top of him
30:35Another thing
30:37He's starting to telegraph his punches
30:39Beautiful combination
30:41Drives McQuarrie into the ropes
30:43He bounces off the ropes
30:45Ray you were saying he can't be on the ropes
30:47He can't be on the ropes
30:49He has to get out of the body
30:51And come back to the head
30:53Another thing Barry
30:55Is the jab of McQuarrie
30:57Is starting to slow down now
30:59This early in the round
31:01He needs to get that jab back
31:03Not even half way into the first round
31:05Again it is Curry pressing the action
31:08And Curry looks to be a lot stronger
31:11Very good defense
31:13He has better defense than McQuarrie
31:15Keeps those hands high
31:17Keeps that chin tucked
31:20He's making every punch count
31:23And it also seems
31:25That Donald Curry feels
31:27That McQuarrie can't hurt him
31:29He hit him a couple of fairly good shots
31:31And Curry didn't even flinch
31:33Didn't even take a half step back
31:35You notice that McQuarrie now
31:37Is starting to double up on his jab
31:39What he's trying to do
31:41Is trying to bait Curry in for that good right hand
31:43McQuarrie has a devastating right hand
31:45And another good left hand
31:47And McQuarrie is in trouble
31:49Curry is on top of him
31:51He's hurt
31:53You notice his knees buckle
31:56Another left hand
31:58Curry is going to stay right on top of this man
32:02McQuarrie is still in trouble
32:14He knows how high that
32:16Curry keeps those hands
32:18He's fighting a perfect fight this time
32:22There he ran to the right hand of McQuarrie
32:24That was the first wild punch
32:26That Curry has thrown
32:40Keep the punches up
32:43End of the first round
32:45Huge round for Donald Curry
32:48A very dominant round
32:50A classic round
32:52For Donald Curry
32:54You're looking at Milton McQuarrie
33:15And here is Curry in action
33:17With a good right hand
33:19Which he'll show right one minute
33:21Staying close to left hand
33:23That was the left hand
33:25A perfect punch came down and over with the left
33:27Here it is from another angle
33:29Curry measuring his man
33:31McQuarrie a little bit off balance
33:37He took an awful good punch
33:39He's remaining competitive
33:41Let's see what he comes up with in this round
33:43Second round
33:45Emmanuel Stewart telling McQuarrie
33:47I believe he's going to burn himself out
33:49We'll see
33:51I doubt that very seriously
33:53So in the meantime
33:55He's landed those big bombs on McQuarrie
33:57In fact if there's been any question
33:59Of either man's stamina
34:01The question has been of Milton McQuarrie
34:03The low blows
34:05That's being thrown by Curry
34:13Donald Curry now is trying to work that body
34:15Throwing some vicious shots to the midsection
34:17He took a left hand from McQuarrie there
34:21And there was a counter punching left hand
34:26McQuarrie's best bet
34:28Is to use that jab
34:30To keep his man in the center of the ring
34:32What's happened here
34:34He's given Curry momentum
34:36And Curry's going to keep taking the fight to him
34:42Another good right hand by Curry
34:49And downstairs with the right hand by Curry
34:52You listen to the sound of the blows being landed
34:54That tells you that these guys
34:56Are putting a lot of body
34:58Are getting a lot of leverage behind each punch
35:08A left hand
35:10Down goes McQuarrie
35:12And left hook
35:16He's in trouble
35:23Curry right back
35:25It's over
35:27This one is history
35:39You couldn't see a more picture perfect
35:40Fight than Donald Curry fought tonight
35:43He has the makings of being a truly
35:45Great, great fighter
35:47I would say
35:49Great, great fighter
35:51Donald Curry has proved
35:53That he has the makings of a great champion
35:55He threw a left hook
35:57And right hand
35:59Milton McQuarrie is still down
36:01And we will keep an eye on him
36:03We will of course
36:05Let you know
36:07What condition he is in
36:08They will keep him there
36:10As a precautionary measure I'm quite certain
36:14You will not see a better left hook than that
36:16That was one of the best left hooks I've seen executed
36:18Picture perfect
36:21Minute and 53 seconds of the second round
36:25It was all serious business by Donald Curry
36:28He did not waste a punch
36:30He threw maybe one or two awkward punches
36:32Milton McQuarrie being looked at
36:34By the doctor
36:36He is conscious
36:39We want to keep the crowd in the ring
36:41Away from Milton McQuarrie
36:43They're putting an ice bag under his head right now
36:45The concern Barry
36:47Was when he was knocked down
36:49His head actually hit the canvas
36:51And that's what the concern of the physicians
36:53They will take no chances
36:55Sports medicine has gotten
36:57So far advanced in the last several years
36:59Everybody very conscious
37:01Of the tragedies in this sport
37:03And in other sports
37:05Barry let's take a look at it
37:06We'll see the first knockdown right here
37:08And it was as pretty as you're going to see
37:10You can appreciate
37:12It happened so quick
37:14Appreciate the power
37:16The execution of the left hook
37:18Thrown by Donald Curry
37:20There he stepped in with the left hook
37:22Picture perfect right on the chin
37:24You won't see a better left hook thrown by anyone
37:26When they teach this sport
37:28At this point I don't think
37:30That he should have continued
37:32Because he's still wobbling
37:34The right hand
37:36He was saying to Mills Lane
37:38On that shot that we just saw
37:40In the corner a moment ago
37:42I'm okay, I'm okay
37:44And Mills Lane then waved him on
37:46But you can see his legs were still rubbery
37:48And as he walked out
37:50He walked straight to the right hand
37:52Milton McCrory appears to be alright
37:54They're keeping him down
37:56And will do so as a precautionary measure
37:58Now he comes to his feet
38:00And they will sit him down on a stool
38:02All this very precautionary
38:04Milton McCrory is conscious
38:06On the back of his neck
38:08He appears to be okay
38:10Watch the right hand thrown by Donald Curry
38:12He walks straight towards McCrory
38:14And there
38:16Solid right hand
38:18And McCrory is out for good
38:20Well there is no questioning
38:22The talent of Donald Curry
38:24Based on tonight's performance
38:26Well the power and the way he threw the punch
38:28Was just perfect
38:30You've always said that so much
38:32Of a boxer's power of course
38:34Comes not from the hands but from the feet
38:36And it was both on the left hook
38:38And on that straight right hand
38:40That he threw to finish it off
38:42Well Barry you see the whole fight
38:44The way that Donald Curry worked his body
38:46He stayed down to the body
38:48And when the opportunity presented itself
38:50He went to the head
38:52He was a much stronger puncher
38:54Just relax, just relax for a few minutes
38:56And then we'll have you get up
38:58And walk around for us a little bit
39:00And show everybody you're okay
39:02Give the crowd a big wave
39:04Put up a hell of a fight
39:07Come on, Jesus Christ man
39:09Is it like that?
39:11Hold a second
39:13Wait a minute
39:15And so the good news is of course
39:17That Milt McCrory is talking to people
39:19And you heard the doctor say
39:21We'll keep you sitting around
39:23And he'll be able to get up and walk around a little bit
39:25Obviously he's very disappointed
39:27Asked what round it was
39:29And his trainers told him the second round
39:31He has to be disappointed
39:33But I'll tell you he was in there with a buzzsaw tonight
39:34Now Donald will get the recognition
39:36That he deserves
39:38I mean this fight here
39:40Because there's very few fighters
39:42That could have given him this type of publicity
39:44And recognition
39:46There is his record up to the minute now
39:4824-0, 19 knockouts
39:50And he seems to be getting better
39:52With every fight
39:54And Larry Merchant has made his way over
39:56First to speak with the loser
39:58The former champion Milt McCrory
40:00Larry you got it
40:02Milt McCrory has regained consciousness
40:04Are you alright now Milt?
40:06He knows where he is
40:08He knows everything about what's going on
40:10He's come out of it very nicely
40:12He's very disappointed
40:14That he lost the fight
40:16But that's the main thing
40:18Alright, he's alright
40:20We'll get Donald Curry for you in a moment
40:22Okay, thank you very much Larry Merchant
40:24You heard the doctor who was doing the talking there
40:26Saying that he is alright
40:28Now both fighters congratulating one another
40:30We will make our way over to Donald Curry
40:32Just as soon as we can get through the chaos
40:34That is currently going on in the ring
40:36Larry Merchant right now
40:38Getting next to Donald Curry
40:40And we'll have a chance to see it
40:42Let's go up to Larry Merchant right now
40:44Who is with the champion Donald Curry
40:46Larry
40:48Donald Curry
40:50Did you anticipate something like this?
40:53Well not really
40:55Usually I don't get a strategy
40:57I don't get that feeling until I get in the ring
40:59And Milt was a lot taller than I thought he was
41:01So I was going to try
41:02To fill him out the first couple of rounds
41:04Make him work hard
41:06And then I seen I was physically stronger than he was
41:08So then I started
41:10I really started taking it to him
41:12I could out muscle him
41:14And I caught him with a good enough hook
41:16It looked as though you didn't think he could hurt you
41:18About midway through the first round
41:20Well I did
41:22After I hurt him I started trying too hard
41:24I started kind of lunging with punches
41:26And my corner came back to me
41:28When I went back to the corner
41:30They told me to set him up
41:32And I did so
41:34And I stepped in with the hook
41:36Let's take a look at the knockdown
41:38The first knockdown
41:40Describe it to us as you see it
41:42Well it was a left hook
41:44My corner had been telling me
41:46Throw that left hook
41:48He was wide open
41:50I caught him right off his jab
41:52Why are crunk fighters wide open for a left hook?
41:54Most of them drop their left hand
41:56And they keep their hands low
41:58I thought he was a lot faster than what he was
42:00As far as the jab
42:02Inside the jab with the left hook
42:04You seemed to come out
42:06Almost in a cool fury
42:08Like you just couldn't wait
42:10To get at this man
42:12Well in the last couple of fights
42:14It's kind of been that way
42:16I would like to go back to boxing
42:18But I physically
42:20I thought I was a lot stronger
42:22So I went out and took it to him
42:24And he never gave you any problem at all?
42:26Not really
42:28He hit me with some good shots in the first round
42:30Anything that endaved me
42:32I usually do
42:34Let's then take a look
42:36At the final knockdown
42:38Well it was a right hand
42:40I knew it was all over
42:42Because I snapped his head back
42:44I knew then that it was over
42:46You've talked about
42:48Going right straight up
42:50To the middleweight division
42:52Or at least the junior middleweight division
42:54Can you carry that punch with you?
42:56Can you hurt big guys like that?
42:58I think so
43:00When I move up to the 54 pound
43:02I think I can handle
43:04The middleweight
43:06In maybe another year or so
43:08You wait all this time
43:10To become the unified
43:12Welterweight champion
43:14And now you say after one fight
43:16You're going to abandon the title
43:18Or are you going to defend it at all?
43:20I don't think so
43:22I think I want to go up and
43:24Fight junior middleweight
43:26I don't think the credibility
43:28In the welterweight division
43:30There's nobody there
43:32That's going to matter
43:34In the long run
43:36Name some of them
43:38Mike McCollum, Tommy Hearns
43:40Santos
43:42Davey Moore
43:44It's a lot of good junior middleweights
43:46Bring them out
43:48What does this mean to you
43:50In terms of your saying
43:52That you want to be more than
43:54Just a champion
43:56That you want to be a boxing
43:58Figure in history?
44:00Yeah I think that's my goal
44:02More for longevity
44:04Not really longevity
44:06But history
44:08I want to be named in the same
44:10With my man Sugar Ray Leonard
44:12Well you've got a way to go
44:14But you're on your way
44:16Back to ringside
44:18Let's go up to the ring
44:20And have Chuck Cullen
44:22Get the official decision
44:24Ladies and gentlemen
44:26The time
44:28One minute
44:30Fifty three seconds
44:32And the winner
44:34And new undisputed
44:36Welterweight champion of the world
44:38Donald
44:40The Lone Star Cobra
44:42Curry
44:45So a most impressive victory for him
44:47You know it's interesting to me Ray
44:49You don't think of boxing too much
44:51As a team sport
44:53And yet you heard him say
44:55Cronk fighters all dropped that left hand
44:57So somebody obviously was looking at films
44:59Looking at tapes
45:00Not just Curry but the whole team in the corner
45:02Well the Curry group
45:04They did their homework
45:06And they studied films and tapes
45:08And I tell you
45:10What I like mostly about Donald Curry
45:12He's so modest
45:14I mean he fought a magnificent fight
45:16He got the job done
45:18And he spoke very highly
45:20And nice guys don't always finish last
45:22This one just won a great fight
45:24Let's take a look then
45:26As we go back to the second round
45:28We'll pick it up just into the second round
45:30As he punches up
45:32That's about the only negative you can find in this fight
45:34Well Donald Curry fought the perfect fight
45:36You know he stalked his leg
45:38Cut the ring off
45:40He worked the body
45:42He used his jab
45:44Got closer to McCrory
45:46Kept McCrory off balance a great deal
45:48You see here those body shots
45:50Although some were considered low
45:52He stayed on top of McCrory
45:54Do you see McCrory dropping his left hand here?
45:56Well McCrory has a tendency again to reach in
45:58Reach in I mean he comes in with his head first
46:00But Curry was able to counter that
46:02There you see he throws the right hand
46:05You know it's interesting also I think
46:07He likened himself to you
46:09To Sugar Ray Leonard
46:11And I think you never went into a fight with a particular style
46:13You fought the fight to suit the man you were fighting
46:15When he fought Roger Stafford
46:17He was an aggressive fighter
46:19When he fought Elio Diaz
46:21He was a counter puncher
46:23When he fought Nina LaRocca he was also aggressive
46:25When he fought Colin Jones he was just a flat footed banger
46:27Curry fought the best fight for a guy like McCrory
46:29He just stayed aggressive
46:31Very good defense
46:33You have to be impressed with his defense
46:35And never really gave McCrory any breathing room
46:37Beautiful left hook
46:39I mean I really have to take my hat off to Donald Curry
46:41Because he had balance
46:43He had leverage
46:45And you saw the power of that left hook
46:47The other thing that he seems to do
46:49That the man on my right Sugar Ray Leonard used to do too
46:51Is he doesn't waste any punches
46:53He takes his time
46:55He makes every punch count
46:56Every time, that's exactly what it was
46:58He literally knocked the man out with two punches
47:00He had the left hook, the man got up
47:02He took a nine count, he said I'm okay
47:04He came back, one punch, right hand, he was down
47:06Well as he walked towards the ring
47:08You saw that he was all business
47:10He wasn't smiling, wasn't laughing or anything
47:12Whereas that Milton McCrory
47:14Was pretty much trying to dance to the song
47:16And it didn't really pay off
47:18Is it a fact that all cronk fighters do that kind of thing?
47:20Do you feel that cronk people are going to have to go back
47:22And kind of take a look at their own stable?
47:24Well what has happened
47:26Is that a lot of people
47:28They try to emulate Thomas Hearns
47:30And they have a tendency to drop that left hand
47:32And prove to be a big mistake
47:34Both McCrory and Curry
47:36Have said that they would feel more comfortable
47:38Going up one division
47:40At least to a junior middleweight division
47:42If not to a middleweight division
47:44Do you see that happening or do you see somebody
47:46As Donald Curry said
47:48That he might have a couple of fights in a welterweight division
47:50Anybody that can compete with him in a welterweight division?
47:52I think that Donald Curry will move up to the junior middleweight
47:54Like he stated, there are no real quality fighters
47:56In the welterweight division
47:58Whereas he can move up for Thomas Hearns
48:00Or Mike McCullins
48:02And in the future, a Marvin Hagel bout
48:04Would be mega bucks
48:06I would have to think so too
48:08And people are going to really start to take notice now
48:10Of this man
48:12Let's take a look at a most interesting graphic here
48:14Here's the best won and lost record
48:16In welterweight championship bouts
48:18And right now it's Donald Curry up there
48:20In some pretty select company
48:22Sugar Ray Robinson of course, six wins and no defeats
48:24And now Donald Curry along with Tommy Ryan
48:26With two losses
48:28What does it mean though for a fighter to go up
48:30Now you heard Larry Merchant ask Donald Curry
48:32Can you go up and still pack the punch
48:34He says he feels he can in a year or so
48:36What do you think?
48:38He can because he's a young guy
48:40He's steady growing Barry
48:42And he's not taking anything away from himself
48:44By putting on that additional weight
48:46Because it is natural weight
48:48And the way he looked, he looked physically stronger
48:50Than Milton McCrory and he proved that
48:52He was able to out muscle McCrory
48:54And McCrory never really was into the fight
48:56Donald Curry at all
48:58Yeah I think that's the other thing
49:00We've talked about what a great left hook he had
49:02And what a good finisher he was
49:04With that straight right hand
49:06But his defense as you touched upon a moment ago
49:08Was probably equally as good as his offense tonight
49:10Donald Curry is what you call a fundamentalist
49:12I mean he keeps his hands high
49:14And he bobs and weaves
49:16He throws the left jab
49:18He comes back with the left hook
49:20And tonight all he needed was the left hook
49:22And the right hand to finish things up
49:24He came into this fight incidentally
49:26Obviously the reputation as a counterpuncher
49:28Is not one that's going to make you a lot of money
49:30Do you feel that his reputation will change
49:32Based on tonight's victory?
49:34Well tonight's fight and victory
49:36Is going to make him even better
49:38And it won't change anything
49:40If anything it will make him better
49:42Good counterpuncher but a lot of offense too
49:44He took the initiative, took the fight right to the man
49:46And the results of course really were in the pudding right there
49:48You saw the fact that he knocked the man out
49:50In the second round, that was the proof
49:52Let's go up to the ring now and Larry Merchant
49:54Larry
49:56I have two questions for all of this
49:58Little all of this
50:00One is why wasn't there any music
50:02In the champion's ring this week?
50:06Watching him work out
50:08He's one of the few fighters in modern times
50:10Who don't have a lot of hot music around them
50:12To inspire them
50:14Now it occurs to me I know why
50:16He knows that he makes the music
50:18He beats on those drums pretty effectively
50:22Another thing I was thinking about
50:24Was something he said earlier in the week
50:26That this fight is the first fight
50:28Of the rest of his life
50:30Indeed it will be
50:32Now he will try to follow in the footsteps
50:34Of three outstanding welterweight champions
50:36Who went on to become middleweight champions
50:38In modern times
50:40Ray Robinson, Carmen Basilio, Emil Griffith
50:43That's pretty good company
50:45So out there in front of him
50:47A major, major fight
50:49One of these years
50:51Perhaps a year and a half down the road
50:53Marvin Hagler
50:54We're waiting for Marvin
50:56Barry
50:58Okay thanks Larry
51:00There is an interesting note to that
51:02And it is consistent with his character I think
51:04That he doesn't have a lot of music playing
51:06I think he's a very quiet guy
51:08In fact he said, we talked about heroes earlier
51:10We said Milton McCrory's hero was Al Kaline
51:12Well his heroes are John McEnroe and Eddie Murphy
51:14He said he likes big mouths
51:16And the reason he does
51:18Is because he's not one, he wishes he could be
51:20Well his personality won't let him be that way
51:22He's a nice guy, he's a champion
51:24No question about it
51:26You want to see one more time just how great he is
51:28We'll take another look
51:30Just before the knockout in the second round
51:32And that is McCrory of course
51:34The gold trunks on the right of your screen right now
51:36If you just happen to tune in
51:38Even that was a good right hand
51:40Very, very patient, taking his time
51:42He's making every punch count
51:44And he sees himself just getting closer and closer
51:46And ready to drop the bomb
51:48Which was the left hook
51:50And it is coming up in just a moment
51:52And it came from nowhere
51:54And he's not going to let him be that way
51:56With power
51:58He missed with a left hook there
52:00But that was the last one he was going to miss
52:02It was short, it was sweet
52:04And it was very effective
52:06I'll tell you when they draw it up on the chalkboard
52:08That's got to be the way they do it Ray
52:10That is the exact way
52:12You might hear, just to interrupt
52:14Mills Lane say are you okay
52:16Well you notice that
52:18McCrory didn't have a chance at all
52:20Because as soon as Mills Lane let him proceed to fight
52:22Donald Curry was right there
52:24And that one was history
52:26So a great champion we might have seen tonight
52:28And it's a champion who seems to be getting better
52:30And better and better
52:32His mind in addition to his body
52:34Just seems to be in the right place
52:36Everything seems to be working very well for him
52:38He has the right attitude for a champion
52:40And I think there's a lot of great things
52:42In the future for Donald Curry
52:44You're going to see a lot more
52:46Bigger things for Donald Curry
52:48I was going to say I always ask you
52:50What does this guy have to do to be even better
52:52And I don't even know if I can really honestly ask you
52:54But he knows exactly what he has to do
52:56And he gets the job done
52:58And the fact is
53:00The guy is a nice guy
53:02You know everybody now certainly
53:04Is going to be talking about a Marvin Hagler fight
53:06And there is some question
53:08As to whether Marvelous Marvin Hagler
53:10Is going to want to get in there right now
53:12With Donald Curry
53:14Well yeah Marvin will fight anyone
53:16Because he's that type of champion
53:18But the fact of the matter is
53:20Like Donald Curry stated
53:22The fact that in a year or so
53:24They're going to let him just jump in the ring
53:26With a middleweight
53:28The junior middleweight category is perfect for him
53:30Because he has the height
53:32He has the talent, the experience
53:34And most importantly the power to deal with those guys
53:36Marvin Hagler of course has said
53:38That he only wants three more fights
53:40And then he'd like to get out of it
53:42He'd like to just take Carlos Monzon's record
53:44And say that's it I'll see you later
53:46But do you think the lure of the big bucks
53:48With a guy like Donald Curry will be enough
53:50Oh it has to because people are going to start talking
53:52They're talking now
53:54Like the guy before this fight said
53:56His walking around weight was 163 pounds
53:58But Donald Curry's walking around weight
54:00Was only 156 or 157
54:02So I don't know would he just be
54:04Kind of a blown up welterweight
54:06Not really because when I was fighting as a welterweight
54:08147 I would walk the streets around 56, 57
54:10So it's a natural weight
54:12But it's not really just that
54:14When you look at Marvelous Marvin Hagler
54:16And you look at Donald Curry
54:18At least I see two different kinds of fighters
54:20I don't know why I just have this image
54:22That Hagler is just a bigger stronger guy
54:24And that's just the way his body looks
54:26And is built as opposed to Donald Curry
54:28Who's a little bit more wiry
54:30More like you actually
54:32Well Hagler is a monster and his body speaks for itself
54:34But Donald Curry he's going to continue to grow
54:36Get bigger and stronger and more developed
54:38You know we talked about the fact that
54:40Donald Curry doesn't waste any punches
54:42He just goes ahead and does his business
54:44The punch stat figures from tonight's fight
54:46I think are most revealing
54:4858% effectiveness tonight for Curry
54:50And they weren't so much jabs
54:52He went with some bombs
54:54He was pretty much just using a jab
54:56And just trying to keep his man off
54:58But Donald Curry stayed in his chest
55:00Didn't allow him to have any punching room
55:02Because like I said earlier
55:04That Donald Curry is a better inside fighter
55:06Than Milt McCrory
55:08Well the 18% effectiveness from McCrory
55:10Is indicative of just how good Donald Curry plays defense also
55:12Oh for sure because
55:14In other words when he got inside
55:16He was able to dish some punches to the midsection
55:18And I think those punches too
55:20Took their toll on Milt McCrory
55:22What do you feel McCrory's real strength is
55:24He's the kind of guy who can really get in there
55:26And bang away
55:28Now obviously against Milt McCrory he did
55:30But McCrory is a guy who
55:32When I think he hit him a couple of times
55:34Obviously Curry said well this man can't hurt me
55:36And I'm going to go ahead and bang away at him
55:38But what's his natural style
55:40Well with McCrory he needs to box
55:42He tries to do that
55:44But what you have to understand Barry
55:46Is the fact that Donald Curry
55:48Was so much stronger physically
55:50Than McCrory
55:52And McCrory just couldn't get out of the way
55:54And he used that reach advantage
55:56But Haggles right in his chest
55:58One final thing
56:00We've talked about the champion Donald Curry
56:02We haven't talked too much about Milt McCrory
56:04He's a guy who's always said
56:06I don't really care too much for boxing
56:08I just do it because that's the way I make my living
56:10Now with a devastating loss like this
56:12What's going to come of him
56:14It's going to affect him quite naturally
56:16Because when crunk fighters lose
56:18Especially as devastating as that knockout was
56:20It has a tendency to take something away from them
56:22Alright so that just about brings this one to a close
56:24And we look forward to a comprehensive look back
56:26At the year in sports
56:28Culminating in the presentation
56:30Of the Sportsman of the Year
