Bobby Czyz vs Prince Charles Williams - Showtime Championship Boxing October 29,

  • last week
Transcript
00:00I am and Jim McDonnell managed to last seven rounds, but he paid a heavy price.
00:30He's a good fighter and he proved that he is a good champ, but I just feel it's my time
00:39now.
00:40Prince Charles Williams, as he's known in Philadelphia, is ready to be crowned king.
00:46His last defeat was four years ago to former world champion Marvin Johnson.
00:51Since that loss, he has climbed the light heavyweight ladder to become the number one
00:55contender in the world.
00:58It took Williams only two rounds to dispatch his last opponent.
01:05After a slow start in his career, Williams believes he has finally put it all together.
01:09I feel this was my talent.
01:11I just found it out and now it's paid off.
01:15It shows that I went on to become the United States light heavyweight champ, ranked number
01:21one in the world, giving it a fight for the world title, and it's just, like I said, it's
01:25a dream of my life.
01:27Basically, I think I have my sights set on, after beating Charles Williams, Tommy Hearns.
01:32I'm hoping that he'll come up to the light heavyweight division after he's victorious
01:35over Juan Lo Dan, if he is victorious, and make me rich and give me the credibility I
01:41so dearly crave.
01:42Charles Williams, he is 21-4-2 with 13 KO's.
01:43He won the USBA title over James Salerno, and now has his shot at the IBF world championship,
01:54and he will be challenging Bobby Chez from One Oc New Jersey.
01:59There is Charles Williams from Mansfield, Ohio, now lives in Philadelphia and has indeed
02:04become a Philadelphia fighter.
02:06In those ring wars there, he has matured into a top flight contender.
02:10Well, Gil Clancy, let's talk about Bobby Chez.
02:13Bobby Chez is a young man who's had certainly an odyssey of unusual proportions all the
02:20way to this world championship.
02:22He was a middleweight, his only loss was to Mustafa Hamsho, he's now the light heavyweight
02:27champion of the world.
02:28Is he as good as any of the light heavyweight champions that we've seen in recent years?
02:33Well, Tim, tonight should be the night for Bobby Chez.
02:36He's a champion of the world, but I think this is the kind of a fight that can really
02:40have the boxing public discover him, move him up into that superstar status, the way
02:44a Marvin Hagler and a Tommy Hearns and a Ray Leonard are.
02:47He has a real, real tough opponent in front of him, which has to bring out the best in
02:51Bobby Chez.
02:52And if you bring out the best, you're really going to see something.
02:53Tonight is the night I think it's going to happen.
02:54Thirty-two and one, he started boxing when he was six years old.
02:55He wants Thomas Hearns.
02:56You heard him say that in the feature that we showed you about Bobby Chez just a few
02:57minutes ago.
02:58He hopes that Hearns will come back up to the light heavyweight ranks.
03:10Hearns is, of course, the WBC light heavyweight champion, having defeated Dennis Andres for
03:16that title.
03:17And Chez hopes his big money fight and his big prestige fight will be against Tommy Hearns
03:22if he can get by a man who calls himself Prince Charles Williams.
03:27A lot of fans here from New Jersey, nicknamed Chappy on the back, Bobby Chez in the glitter
03:37of Las Vegas here, a sequined robe befitting the occasion.
03:40And in seeing Bobby earlier this morning after the weigh-in, likewise poised, confident and
03:46very relaxed.
03:47Let's take a look at the tail of the tape.
03:50Neither fighter had any problem at all making the weight.
03:53You can see they're well under the 175 limit.
03:56Hearns, 25 years of age, the height advantage clearly to Williams, but Chez is used to that.
04:01He has fought taller middleweights and virtually every light heavyweight he's been in with
04:05has been taller than he has.
04:06It has not affected him so far.
04:08He is making his fourth title defense of the IBF crown.
04:15The rules under the International Boxing Federation, 15 rounds, the championship distance, no standing
04:21eight count, three knockdown rule does apply.
04:24In other words, if a fighter is knocked down three times in one round, then the fight is
04:27over.
04:2810 ounce gloves will be used with the attached thumb.
04:31That's a safety measure.
04:32Three judges will do the scoring at ringside.
04:36And now let's go to our ring announcer, Chuck Hall.
04:38This is the gold main event of the evening.
04:4315 rounds of boxing for the IBF light heavyweight championship of the world.
04:49The official design by the Madison Athletic Commission for the next battle of the night,
04:54the judges are Glenn Amara, Michael Clea, and Dolphie Shirley.
04:58Your referee is Carlos Padilla.
05:02Introducing, in the blue corner, fighting out of Mansfield, Ohio, weighing in at 172
05:09and one quarter pounds, with a professional record of 21 wins, 4 defeats, 2 draws, and
05:1613 KOs.
05:18He is rated number one in the world by the IBF.
05:21He is the challenger, Prince Charles Williams.
05:28And in the red corner, from Waukee, New Jersey, weighing 173 and three quarter pounds, his
05:37professional record consists of 32 wins, 1 defeat, with 23 KOs.
05:45He is the IBF light heavyweight champion of the world, Bobby Chez.
06:00So we're ready for light heavyweight championship action.
06:03The IBF title, Bobby Chez in his fourth defense.
06:05Bobby Chez Williams, you're going to box for 15 rounds.
06:08You know the rules of boxing.
06:09Avoid using any kinds of power.
06:11Don't throw any punches during the break.
06:13It's not good.
06:14Don't beat people.
06:15You are being responsible for any misbehavior or resistance against you.
06:19Is that understood?
06:20Seconds.
06:21Come on.
06:22Fight him.
06:23That is referee Carlos Padilla from Las Vegas with the final instruction.
06:27Bobby Chez, 32 and 1.
06:29Charles Williams, 21, 4 and 2.
06:32And you saw the height advantage for Charles Williams.
06:34It's 6-2 to Chez's 5-10.
06:38I liked the stare down that both of them was giving just before the bell, just before they
06:41came out.
06:42Chez has defended his crown successfully against Willie Edwards, David Sears, and Diamond Jim
06:47McDonald's last fight on May 3rd of this year.
06:51Williams looks to be touching already really hard.
06:53He walked right out of that corner full of pep.
06:58Bobby better be careful in there today.
07:00He was nailed by a left hook.
07:04You know what I like?
07:05That sequence that they got.
07:06But that takes it away from the concentration.
07:08Because you're more or less trying to be out there looking pretty than anything else.
07:11That is some outfit that Chez has got.
07:13It's Las Vegas spirit.
07:15He looks like he fits right in with all of the neon out on the strip here in Las Vegas.
07:20Well, you know what I like?
07:21Chez threw a nice right hand to the body of Neal just then.
07:24He did great.
07:26Williams looks like a pretty good fighter, Bobby.
07:28Yeah, he looks very confident, I'll tell you.
07:30And I was worried about him this morning.
07:32Double jab.
07:33Hands up good and high.
07:35Good defense.
07:36But you know what I noticed?
07:37He's calling the press, isn't he?
07:38Yeah.
07:39One of them has broken a sweatshirt off.
07:42Don't forget Chez was knocked down by Willie Edwards in the first round
07:45before coming back to stop him.
07:48Well, there's already redness under the left eye of Bobby Chez.
07:52Chez is very crafty.
07:53That's what's good.
07:54That's what he got going in his favor.
07:58Charles Williams, born in Columbus, Mississippi.
08:01Especially in New Jersey.
08:02You know how New Jersey is.
08:04Growing up in New Jersey ain't easy.
08:06New Jersey, the home of Bobby Chez.
08:09Stay there!
08:13I'd like to know how much those trunks of Bobby Chez weigh.
08:17Certainly, if this fight goes long enough
08:20where he's really collecting some clutch,
08:22he's got to be carrying around a lot of weight.
08:24Good jabs by Williams.
08:25Williams is throwing real heavy punches.
08:26Good snappy jabs.
08:28Elimination by Chez and a good recovery.
08:31They're both throwing heavy punches.
08:34That could indicate a little problem for Bobby Chez
08:36because he nails Williams with two good punches
08:39and Williams punched right back.
08:41But you know, Bobby Chez is not moving his head the way he should.
08:43He's just moving his head side to side.
08:45That's how Williams is getting off with his jabs.
08:49Bobby punching at Chez.
08:50Backed up Williams for the first time.
08:53This is a war and it's only round one.
08:58I like when you say that word, war.
09:01Right hand by Chez.
09:03Two good right hands by Chez.
09:05Chez seems to be doing real good in here, I'll tell you.
09:07You know how it is when you become champion,
09:09you get very confident.
09:12When both guys throw right hands like that,
09:14Marv, if one guy lands, it's all over.
09:18It's both gambling.
09:20Now that's the way Chez should be moving his head.
09:24I'll take a 30 second mark in round one.
09:27I think what Williams should be doing is try to box more.
09:30He's trying to take Bobby Chez out there
09:32and he's getting hit as he's trying to take gamble.
09:35That's what he should be doing, boxing.
09:38Final seconds of the first round.
09:41Bobby jabs at Charles Williams.
09:43Williams with a jab at the bell.
09:47Well, some good things from both guys.
09:51Well, they established themselves very well in that first round.
09:53Marvin, I like that double jab of Charles Williams.
09:57If he keeps pumping that jab,
09:59it's gonna have an effect on Bobby,
10:00he's gonna start swelling up.
10:01Right, that's what he should be doing.
10:12Well, it looks like Bobby's getting a littleanic.
10:15He's going in with a double jab.
10:18It's a good one.
10:19It's going to have an effect on Bobby. He's going to start swelling up.
10:22Right, that's what he should be doing. I think he should be jabbing more and moving a little bit more.
10:27Because he's got the reach and he's got a nice right hand.
10:30Instead of trying to go to the body, Bobby's going to the body. It means that he's close.
10:34He's close enough to be hit.
10:39It's getting a little chilly out here, you know what I mean Gil?
10:42That can affect the fighters also.
10:44It's nice for the fighters because the fighters are not warmed up enough on the inside.
10:49They can't create problems.
10:51I like the way Williams leads his corner. He comes out of all positions right away.
10:57Maybe he should try moving around a little bit more and using his boxing technique.
11:03That's what I'm saying, behind that.
11:06He's moving in, which is nice. Williams is stepping in.
11:08But he can, like you said, use that jab enough, right there.
11:11That can create a lot of problems for Bobby.
11:13He just keeps fighting the way he's fighting. Williams is going to take him apart.
11:16Bobby has to gamble. He's the shorter guy.
11:18He has to slip that jab and start throwing off hard combinations.
11:21He can't stay on the outside with Williams.
11:24That's what Bobby's not doing. You can hear from the crowd.
11:26They're yelling at Bobby to move his head.
11:28He's very stationary. His head is very stationary.
11:30And Williams should use that jab as much as he can.
11:32Maybe create and open up a cut somewhere in Bobby's face.
11:36Well, he sure is using it.
11:38The caliber of competition for Williams at this point has not been real high.
11:41His best win over James Salerno and another over Jeff Lansing.
11:44But otherwise, not a lot of tough guys.
11:47But he certainly has come along rapidly in the latter stages of his career.
11:51Looks like a very polished fighter tonight.
11:54He does. He looks very ready for this fight. He's ready.
11:57I like what he did. He shot a left jab to the body and then he hooked it off.
12:01He hooked off the left toe.
12:03He just tried to throw a right hand over chest jab.
12:06Now what he has to do is come back with that straight right hand.
12:08Nice body shot by Bobby.
12:19That's what he's got to do. Use that jab, Williams.
12:23Looks like Jess is trying to figure something out.
12:25And Wiley is trying to figure it out.
12:27Williams is doing the job on him with that jab.
12:30Bobby has to take, like you said, Marv, before, a good offense is the best defense.
12:34And I think that's what Jess has to do. He has to let it all hang out.
12:37That's right. He's got to think about his defense instead of just going all offense.
12:43But Williams came right back with a right hand.
12:46Yeah, he rolled real pretty with it, you know.
12:48That's an indication that Bobby may be in a little trouble.
12:50If he can't hurt Williams with that right hand, it's going to be a long night.
12:59Bobby's head is nice and stationary.
13:01Williams has got to come back with a straight right hand.
13:11Williams looked like a very polished fighter out here tonight, if you could.
13:15Nice. Jab and hook off the jab.
13:18He threw a jab and hooked off. That's only two punches.
13:20And he came back with it.
13:21Williams is scoring points.
13:24He came back with a straight right hand right after that.
13:2720 seconds left in round number two.
13:29Scheduled for 15, remember, under IVF championship rules.
13:36Will the Tom Hermansen roll then?
13:39I'm very impressed about this fight.
13:41I didn't think it was going to look this good.
13:45Nice.
13:46Right hand, that wobble, Williams.
13:47Another right hand, the bell.
13:49The count continues after the bell.
13:51Williams is up.
13:52Williams is up.
13:55When he's up, they've got to put him down.
13:57They have not been counting.
14:00No, that's because he got up.
14:02He got up, they don't count if he gets up.
14:06He went down and got right up.
14:12You've got to open that right arm now.
14:13You're waiting for it.
14:14You've got to take the lead.
14:15You've got to keep pumping that jab.
14:16And don't let him get to you.
14:18Keep pumping the jab.
14:19All right?
14:21We said Ches was trying to figure him out.
14:23And boy, did he figure him out.
14:25Right hand behind the jab.
14:27Put all one, two.
14:28And there's the other right hand.
14:29That may have done it for the night.
14:31Yeah, I don't think he's going to recover from this one.
14:33He should be boxing more.
14:35But as you know, Gil,
14:37you can hit a guy with a right hand
14:38and put him on a clear street
14:39and then hit him with the same type of power
14:41and then wake him right back up.
14:42That's right.
14:43Back into the fight he comes.
14:44You know, in that second round,
14:45as you fellows were commenting on it,
14:47Williams had been, by far,
14:49the superior boxer through the three minutes.
14:51He had the round won easily.
14:53And then suddenly,
14:54he lands with a big right hand.
14:56The last ten seconds.
14:57But Tim, we mentioned that Bobby has...
14:58Bobby's an offensive fighter.
15:00He can't stay out there
15:01and try to figure a guy out.
15:02This is the way he has to fight.
15:03This final way.
15:05Well, what Williams has got to do now
15:07is box and try to clear his head.
15:09I think he's hurt again.
15:10He's hurt again.
15:11Bounce free with Ches,
15:12putting his pressure on.
15:14This is a good finish.
15:16There it is.
15:18Carlos Padilla.
15:20The knockdown.
15:22Takes Ches away as he was in the ropes.
15:24That's a knockdown.
15:25Tim, here's a...
15:26Bobby Ches is one of the best finishers in the business.
15:29I'll be surprised if Williams can storm
15:31last this round, I'll...
15:35Williams in all kinds of trouble.
15:37Covering up, but still taking shots.
15:40And he's trying to punch back.
15:42He is. Now he is.
15:43He's trying to fight back.
15:44He's trying to fight back.
15:45This is where you have to learn how to grab and hold.
15:51You don't know how to hold.
15:52That's inexperience right there.
15:54Another right hand.
15:55That was the one.
15:56He missed the shot,
15:57and Williams hit him with a couple of good uppercuts.
15:59When you can't throw, you can't...
16:01And another one.
16:02Punch yourself out, you know.
16:03Bob, you know, you said that maybe
16:05you may wake him up by hitting him again.
16:07Williams looks like he's awake.
16:08That's what I was saying too.
16:10Bobby got a little tired throwing all those punches.
16:14Williams nails again with an uppercut inside.
16:17Bobby's trying to take his time to put his punches together.
16:19He's resting in there.
16:20That's what he's doing.
16:21I watch him come out like a bat.
16:24How do you know that?
16:29Oh, nice.
16:30Williams is waking up.
16:32Williams, good combination landed.
16:35And there's a jab back again.
16:37Absolutely turned it around here.
16:39And it looked like he was finished early in the round.
16:42He's getting wobbly right now, Tim.
16:44Good combination.
16:45And now he's in.
16:46He's wobbly.
16:47And neither one of them learned how to grab one.
16:51That uppercut is really doing damage.
16:53Well, Bobby doesn't know how to cross his arms.
16:55Now he is.
16:56Now he's crossing his arms.
16:59The best offense is the best defense,
17:01and Bobby's got to throw punches to get out of trouble.
17:03Absolutely right.
17:04He has to grit his teeth and punch.
17:08He let it all hang out at the beginning of this round,
17:10and then he may be arm-weary.
17:13Tim, you can still move your head when you're arm-weary.
17:17Bobby don't have any trouble moving it at all.
17:21Well, he's probably letting Williams throw a lot of punches,
17:24hoping that he'll tie himself up,
17:26leave himself open for another opportunity to score with a nice right hand.
17:30You know, Marvin, Williams throws nice, efficient punches.
17:33They're not the kind of punches that tie you up.
17:35He looks like a well-built light heavy.
17:38Boy, this is a tremendous comeback within this round
17:41for Williams, who was apparently out of it.
17:45Well, they started yelling that in the corner.
17:47He kind of woke them up.
17:48Yeah, they got good voices, and they brought him right back.
17:55Beautiful. You're beautiful. I love you.
17:59That's a good left hook by Bobby Chess and that big right hand.
18:02That was right in the beginning of the round.
18:04That's when Padilla jumped in, and he stopped Bobby from punching.
18:07He didn't have to stop him.
18:13Let's take a look now at some of the beautiful, efficient punches
18:16that Williams is throwing, nice short punches, damaging punches.
18:23I noticed that the ring girl right there, her blouse came loose,
18:26and she couldn't go in the middle of the ring just then.
18:28That's what I was looking at.
18:31You have to look at the fight as well.
18:33Things happen in the corner.
18:35We haven't missed anything marvelous.
18:37He caught the blue gloves in an earlier fight.
18:40Here's Williams out pumping that double jab against him.
18:44Well, he's got to get a hook off the two also,
18:46and then shoot the straight right hand.
18:49Bobby's starting to drop his left hand now, and he's backing up.
18:53He should be staying down a little lower,
18:54try to get back in the inside of Williams' punch.
18:57That's where he was effective when he caught him with the nice right hand.
19:01When Williams was draped over those smokes,
19:03you'd never think that he'd get up.
19:04But, you know, he wasn't down,
19:06and Padilla stopped Bobby's chest and punches.
19:09I think if you're stopping Bobby's chest and punching,
19:11you're supposed to stop the fight.
19:12You know what, this is the biggest opportunity,
19:14and you've got to go all the way out.
19:16It's a dream.
19:17And every fighter that's been put on the pay of gloves,
19:19I think this is a dream.
19:29Williams' comeback.
19:30Well, we're talking about the sub-Philadelphia fighters.
19:32Here's one.
19:35Yeah, but he's getting a little careless in there.
19:37If I was him, I think I would back up a little bit more.
19:39Yeah, Ches woke up a little bit now.
19:41He realizes what he's in with.
19:43That uppercut is what's really bothering him.
19:45Well, Ches is crushing his arms now on the inside,
19:47which is much better.
19:48He has to punch back for now.
19:49He just can't let this guy punch out.
19:51But that's what he's doing.
19:52He's staying low and waiting for Williams to lift his head up
19:54so he can catch him with a hook.
19:56Also, Bobby's eyes look to be puffing up, his right eye.
20:00He knows that Bobby's not shooting straight right hand anymore,
20:02and that's when they caught Williams the first time.
20:08I'm sure we'll see him again.
20:10Well, he better start throwing it soon.
20:13Williams is trying to take the play away from him.
20:15That double jab.
20:16I think Bobby will be able to time it,
20:18because he does it over and over again.
20:20That was a nice right hand thrown by Williams,
20:22but a little off.
20:24He'll have to step in with that right hand.
20:27He'll have to step in with that right hand.
20:28Double jab again.
20:32A minute to go.
20:33Round 4.
20:35Bobby's hurt Southpaw there for a minute.
20:40Well, any doubt about Williams' conditioning
20:42has certainly been erased,
20:43as he was nearly out at the end of round 2,
20:46and early in round 3,
20:47the core punishment.
20:49Then turned that round around entirely.
20:53Looks like none of that ever happened to him at this point.
20:56Well, Bobby's starting to get the head start again now.
21:07Ches has to counter those jabs.
21:09He just can't let this guy keep him.
21:11Right hand over the jab.
21:12That's what he's got to throw more on, Phil.
21:16Now come back with the right hand.
21:20Bobby's got his head hurting a lot.
21:22He's got to go with that body,
21:23because he just saw the man.
21:25Big right hand by Ches.
21:29End of round number 4.
21:36Hey, Phil, you ready to pick it up a little bit?
21:38I don't think he can handle it.
21:39You've got to beat him to the punch.
21:40Don't wait for him.
21:41You understand what I mean?
21:42Do what you've got to do.
21:43You know what to do.
21:44Then we'll show you everything to do.
21:45We'll do it for you.
21:46That's all we ask.
21:47Do what we chose you.
21:48All right?
21:49Hold on.
21:50Okay?
21:51Slip the jab and point to the body.
21:53I don't know where.
21:54You see what I mean?
21:55Slip the jab, Bobby.
21:57You understand what I mean?
21:58Slip the jab.
22:02Slip the jab and left hook to the body.
22:04Slip the jab and right hand to the body.
22:06The head's going to be too big.
22:08The head's going to move.
22:09Nothing else is going to move.
22:12A little swelling over the right eye.
22:14Now Bobby Ches and being attended to
22:16has been a Tommy Park to the instructions.
22:18There you see our CompuPunch stats
22:20through round number 4.
22:22Williams has been the busier boxer
22:24and that's his style.
22:26Despite the fact that he was in trouble
22:28late in round number 2
22:31and early in round 3.
22:33I'm surprised that Williams
22:35had only landed 6 more punches
22:37which seems to me like he landed 106 more
22:39with those jabs.
22:41I'll tell you one thing.
22:42Yes, 3, 4, 5, 6.
22:446 jabs in a row by Williams.
22:457, 8.
22:48Even in the CompuBox for us today
22:50I tell you Tim, you know.
22:52It's what's happening.
22:53And they told Bobby he has to slip that jab
22:55and hook to the body
22:57and slip the jab and throw right hands to the body.
22:59Number 1, he's not slipping the jab.
23:00And number 2, he's not hooking.
23:05You're starting to look like Antefroma
23:07with that eye all puffed up like that.
23:09Well, they have to get some pressure on that eye.
23:12Ice and pressure.
23:13Right hand by Williams, of course.
23:15What they use now is that iron metal.
23:17Ensmo.
23:19It says Ensmo.
23:20And I guess it does end the swelling.
23:22That's the idea.
23:23Each of them is puffing up with that ice on it.
23:26Nice metal ice thing.
23:28Put it right on there.
23:29Ches is not punching enough right now.
23:31He has to punch.
23:32He's got to go more to the body.
23:34Because this kid here, he's head hunting a lot.
23:36And Bobby don't have the technique
23:38to move the head enough.
23:40Now the body.
23:41He got inside Ches and he just stops punching.
23:43That's when he has to do the damage.
23:45When he gets close.
23:46Well, Charles is the much taller.
23:48You know, Williams is the much taller.
23:50And the more effective one with the jab.
23:52Bobby knows he's got to get on the inside.
23:54That was that right hand of Ches.
23:56But he backed up out of there.
24:10It's amazing that Williams lasted that round.
24:13Because Ches is usually a very good finish.
24:15That's what he's saying.
24:16You can wake him right up.
24:17You've got to learn how to finish him off.
24:19What's that?
24:27He hasn't.
24:28He's not punching.
24:29He's not punching back yet.
24:30He's not punching back at all.
24:32His eyes don't look like anything to him.
24:34Williams is piling up the points here in the fifth round.
24:40The jab has been pouring at will.
24:42His eyes are going to be closing, I believe.
24:44His eyes don't look too good, this.
24:46Bobby's looking to nail him with one big punch.
24:48That happens a lot of times.
24:49If you hurt a guy early, you keep looking for the same punch all night.
24:52And while you're looking for it, the other guy wins the fight.
24:55He's hitting you.
24:56He's hitting you to the point.
25:00This is an interesting fight because you don't know who's going to go.
25:05Bobby's waiting a lot now.
25:07He's trying to wonder what kind of position he's in.
25:14And Williams fired right back.
25:30That's the end of round number five
25:32and another round on my scorecard, at least, for Charles Williams.
25:37He's going to blow your nose.
25:39Get out of here.
25:40Put the ice back.
25:42Bobby chairs corner, and they're working on that right eye.
25:45Now, what you're doing is you're holding your head still when he's punching.
25:49You've got to slip and go under that jab with level to the body.
25:53Okay?
25:54Now, he's reaching in with that jab.
25:57You can just bend your knee.
25:59Bend your knee and go to that body.
26:02You're pulling up, and you're pulling up these jabs.
26:04Okay?
26:05Now, if you're getting jabbed coming back,
26:08then park your hand.
26:10Then park your right hand in front of your face.
26:12Fight.
26:13Tim, you have a whole minute to work on an eye.
26:15If he has a swelling like that, they should have that end swell on there
26:18with pressure for the entire minute.
26:20You don't tickle his eye with it.
26:21You use pressure and keep the pressure on.
26:25Yeah, it doesn't look like they were accomplishing much at all
26:27with what's called the end swell.
26:30You need the pressure with the end swell and the cold,
26:33and you have to keep it there.
26:34Take advantage of the full minute.
26:36Not the 10, 15 seconds.
26:38There's a lot of swelling around the right eye of Bobby Chez.
26:41Vision is still good, but how long that'll last,
26:43we'll find out as things progress here.
26:46The excellent jab of Charles Williams will be pecking away at it, no doubt.
26:51Well, you know, for a taller man,
26:53a shorter man has to go to the body more than a taller man.
26:57Well, he's being told to do that in the corner, Marvin,
27:00and there's no response from him.
27:01He's in the corner.
27:02He doesn't look very confident.
27:04Well, he was looking like he was losing his composure,
27:06but now he's coming back.
27:07Well, he nailed him with the good right hand again,
27:10but that's what he has to do.
27:11He has to grit his teeth, and he has to make some more of those.
27:13He's not going to outpoint winners.
27:15He can't get away from that jab,
27:17and that's a very frustrating feeling.
27:20Bobby Chez, fourth defense of his IVF title.
27:24I like his tattoo.
27:25I'm not sure.
27:27Make a little thin cut underneath the eye.
27:31He's allowing Williams to do what he wants to do.
27:38Solid left hook by Williams.
27:43The woman from Columbus, Mississippi,
27:45lives in Mansfield, Ohio, and came out of Philadelphia.
27:49Bobby tried to counter back with a right hand after Williams threw it.
27:52That's what he's got to do.
27:54He doesn't look that uppercut again.
27:56He's pulling back.
27:57Straight back.
27:58A no-no in boxing.
28:00He has to stay there, let it all hang out,
28:03and don't worry about getting tired.
28:05He's supposed to be in condition.
28:07He's stationary again.
28:10He's pulling back every time.
28:12And Williams gets up.
28:14He's stationary again.
28:16Pulling back every time.
28:18And Williams gets in good position.
28:20Keeps pumping that jab.
28:21Keeps his hands good and high.
28:30That's the kind of combination that Williams has got to use,
28:32not just one or two punches.
28:34Three or four of those, real quickly.
28:39Bobby's got to go to the body right here.
28:40He's got him on the rope.
28:41Now work.
28:44Get back up out of there again and give Williams more time.
28:47What he does, he steps right back,
28:48and he gets right in the range of Williams' jab.
28:51That was a home run, Bobby, but it didn't land.
28:58Should have came back with a left hook on that.
29:03Bobby seems to get confused when he gets hit.
29:06When he gets hit, it takes him a little too long to recover.
29:09Well, I think he's trying to wait for this guy to get tired.
29:11This guy is never getting tired again.
29:15Bobby, you know, he's not good.
29:19He's not crossing his arms again on the inside.
29:21He can't put up with that uppercut.
29:24Coming to the end of round number six.
29:26Another solid round for challenger Charles Williams.
29:34Don't forget, still to come in our program tonight,
29:38the WBC middleweight championship.
29:41Thomas Hearns trying to make history,
29:43being the first man to win four titles
29:45in four different weight divisions.
29:47And there we look into the dressing room of Thomas Hearns,
29:51a trailer parked nearby at this outdoor stadium.
29:54The Las Vegas Hilton, he has already won the welterweight,
29:57junior middleweight, and light heavyweight crowns
30:01in his brilliant career.
30:03Only two losses mar his record.
30:06One of them to Sugar Ray Leonard,
30:07the other to the man on my right, marvelous Marvin Haglund.
30:10There is Juan Domingo Roldan
30:12trying to follow in the footsteps of Carlos Monzon
30:14and Hugo Porro, two former Argentinian world champions.
30:20And they've been very confident,
30:21talking knockout of Thomas Hearns.
30:25Here, you're looking at Bobby Chez
30:27trying to defend his crown against Prince Charles Williams
30:31from Mansfield, Ohio, who has had the best of it
30:35despite being knocked down in round number two.
30:39You know, by being knocked down,
30:40I mean, Williams worked harder than I think.
30:42And that sometimes could be, you know,
30:45it's the best thing for Williams.
30:47Bobby is staying exactly where he should not be staying.
30:50He stays right in the range of Williams' jab.
30:53He's either got to get inside, move to the side,
30:55but just don't stand there and eat those jabs all night.
30:59He's got to start moving from side to side.
31:01I think he's getting tired also.
31:02I think he's getting a little frustrated
31:04with those jabs and frustrations.
31:06He looks very frustrated.
31:10He has to let it all hang out.
31:12He has to do what I don't do.
31:14Williams can't mess with his jab.
31:16He just can't mess with it.
31:19More swelling and bruising around that right eye of Chez.
31:27Chez is starting to land a jab of his own now.
31:31He's got to use more than body pushing.
31:35He has to rub him up.
31:37He has to make a wall out of him.
31:39He's standing outside trying to figure him out.
31:41All the time he's trying to figure him out,
31:42the other guy's throwing points,
31:43he's popping that jab at him.
31:45And also, Chez is starting to box now.
31:48He's moving.
31:49He's using his legs now.
31:50And that could create a lot of problems.
31:52Let's see what else he probably has if he tries that.
31:55Now Chez is bouncing.
31:58Now Chez is bouncing.
32:00He helped Chez.
32:02Something has to happen.
32:07Oh, yeah, indeed.
32:08He landed a couple of body shots because he was moving.
32:11Yeah, but his hands, Chez's hands were dropping
32:12and his head's not moving.
32:16That's what he's got to do.
32:17Keep the pressure right on him.
32:18Keep throwing those points.
32:20Yeah, what a good guy, Williams.
32:21Good combination.
32:25Nothing disturbs Williams.
32:26He doesn't get upset.
32:27He just keeps pumping away.
32:30And this is all around 7, 7, 6, right?
32:35Well, you know Bobby Chez is a very tough customer.
32:38Yeah, that left hook at the end,
32:40it could have been the end.
32:41It was just good.
32:42Chez's coming right back now.
32:44He's trying to figure him out.
32:45And that's the kind of fight he's having.
32:46He's going to fight, like you said,
32:47be a bulldog in there.
32:49He's got to be a bulldog in there.
32:51Move another home run for him, Martin.
32:53Yes.
32:55He's got to get down low.
32:57Those knees.
32:58Oh, he's bouncing now.
33:00He's trying something a little different.
33:05I think he's going to help him too much.
33:07Williams is a nice jab.
33:08He's got a beautiful jab.
33:12And Williams is taking the fight, like I said.
33:14He's not afraid of him at all.
33:18Nice.
33:19Good uppercut by Williams.
33:20Beautiful right uppercut.
33:21That's a good mallet, Chez.
33:22That's bounce over.
33:23Beautiful right uppercut.
33:25Now you've got to come back.
33:26You've got to repeat.
33:32Well, it was a better round for Chez.
33:34And Fancy is scoring it for him.
33:35But I think, again, it's one of those things,
33:37if you look at the three minutes,
33:39my judgment, Williams won the round.
33:41So how do the judges see it?
33:42Do they remember the latter part of it?
33:44Give it to Chez.
33:47I thought he started to move.
33:48He did better.
33:49I thought that Chez landed some very hard punches that round.
33:52Very effective punches.
34:11Well, they're fired up over there.
34:13That's for sure.
34:14They've got to be pleased with his body.
34:18And his nickname is Smiley when you're in court.
34:23Bill Hayward, Leon Muhammad in the corner of Carl's Williams.
34:28Marty Feldman, manager Gary Stapleton.
34:32Nearby, cheering them on.
34:33Don't be about it.
34:34Don't be about it.
34:35Bobby, go to him.
34:36Don't make him feel the fire.
34:38Don't make him feel the fire.
34:39Are you seeing double?
34:42I'm not seeing double.
34:43I'm not seeing double.
34:44OK, go.
34:50I think Charles is going to come out real strong.
34:52This is going to be a good round right here.
34:54They're both going to let it this round.
34:56Chez knows that the doctor is thinking of stopping the fight,
34:58so he has to gamble.
35:00You see Chez now starting to go forward.
35:02Starting to go forward, and that's what he's got to do.
35:04Put the pressure on this big guy.
35:07Move the head.
35:08Get in the inside.
35:09Throw the punches.
35:10Put the combination together.
35:11Use two hands.
35:14There you go.
35:15Two hands.
35:16Keep that head down.
35:18There you go.
35:20Nice right hand.
35:24Now he'll stop again.
35:32The CompuBox folks tell us that Williams has 380 jabs,
35:36190 by Chez.
35:37They're going at it right now.
35:38I love this round.
35:39And Williams is wearing, again, some effective punches inside.
35:42Short, little uppercuts.
35:46Round 8 scheduled for 15,
35:48and the pressure clearly on the champion, Chez.
35:51Worried about his vision.
35:52Nice job, Chez.
35:55Now it's all there to put his punches together.
35:57Nice right hand by Williams.
36:00And another right hand.
36:03Chez can't wait.
36:05He cannot wait.
36:08He's dropping his hands.
36:09Chez is dropping his hands.
36:11Looks a little fatigued out there.
36:19Right through the 8.
36:20Almost clinical performance now by Charles Williams.
36:24Good right hand by Williams again.
36:27And another.
36:29Right down the pipe with that last right hand.
36:33Doesn't appear that he's got that one-punch knockout power,
36:37but, boy, does he put some hurt on you,
36:39and he's lumped the face with the champion, Chez.
36:41Just a very efficient fighter.
36:45Doesn't let you rest.
36:46Stays on you all the time.
36:49Well, that's what conditioning does.
36:52I like a fighter like that.
36:54Instead of standing looking at the guy,
36:56when you're not doing anything else,
36:57you can always pump that jab, and that's what he does.
36:59Nice uppercut.
37:00You've got to put his punches together to get him going.
37:02I don't know what the power is.
37:03Unless Bobby does something big,
37:05I don't think this fight has much longer to go.
37:07And unless they do a better job in the corner on that right eye.
37:10That's what he's got to do.
37:11Stay low and get away from that jab.
37:17He's just fighting a good fight.
37:19Good combination by Williams.
37:20Good combination, and I'm not confident today.
37:23I'm not confident this time.
37:27Well, Chez now is just...
37:41Coming to the end of round number eight.
37:45Looks like Chez has even lost his tap on his punches.
37:48He's often been going backwards more
37:50than he has through the fight to this date.
37:53Looks like a weary warrior at the moment.
37:55He's fighting with one eye now.
37:57We've got six more to go, baby.
37:59You understand what I mean?
38:00All right.
38:04You've got to move your head inside.
38:10You watch the way they're fooling around with that hand swell.
38:14Instead of keeping it,
38:15they have to keep it on that eye and press it.
38:18Keep it there for the full minute.
38:20I wonder if they've got any ice,
38:21if they're keeping it in ice.
38:25You don't tickle the guy.
38:26What's the point in that?
38:27Smash it right against there.
38:28Keep it on and hold it there.
38:30Well, you know...
38:34Dr. Homansky, the gentleman with the glasses there,
38:37is the number one position tonight.
38:40There are three positions in attendance,
38:41but he is the one in charge.
38:46And did not come into the corner,
38:47but clearly watching closely here.
38:49We're into round number nine.
38:53Well, you know what?
38:54Charlotte's got to throw the left hook now
38:56because Bobby's got a problem with that vision.
39:00Bobby has to throw enough punches
39:02to keep William from punching,
39:04but he stands against.
39:05He's right out at the right range.
39:08He says,
39:09this is where you want me to be,
39:10this is where I'll be.
39:11He doesn't belong there.
39:13He can't see that jab coming at all now.
39:15He's totally blind in one eye.
39:19And that's a terrible feeling to be in,
39:20a terrible position to be in.
39:25Can't see that jab at all.
39:35That's the way Bobby's got to fight,
39:36in the inside, wait and see.
39:39Now Williams is cut over the eye.
39:43There's a cut over the right eye of Charles Williams.
39:47They have found some head contact
39:49in the bands on the ropes above it.
39:52Now sometimes when a fighter cuts another fighter,
39:55not only does it handicap the guy that's cut,
39:58but it gives the other guy a surge of adrenaline.
40:02Makes him a little more confident.
40:03Yeah, he is now.
40:04He's just showing it now.
40:06It felt like he was out of the fight.
40:08Now he sees he cut the guy,
40:09knows he's got a shot again.
40:11Well, now it looks like it'll get even.
40:12That's what he wants to do.
40:14Try to get it even.
40:15He's trying to protect that eye now.
40:19He's got to stay low.
40:20He keeps pulling back.
40:21He has to stay low and he has to keep punching.
40:24Go forward.
40:27He stays out there and tries to study Williams.
40:29All he does is get kicked apart.
40:36Chez has cut around the mouth now.
40:40That's a flip there.
40:41They've got their feet tangled up.
40:46Looks like Bobby wanted to touch gloves with him,
40:48like in a gym workout.
40:50He's got to get mad and forget about a gym workout.
40:52He's cut on the chin.
40:55The eye is closing.
41:00You get to know what a championship fight is about.
41:02You've got to go all out.
41:07Well, he tried to nail him with that right hand again.
41:09It worked so good earlier.
41:10Yeah, he threw that overhand right.
41:13Looks like a little snap has gone out of his hands.
41:16Yeah, well, if he put his feet together like he's doing right now,
41:19he can hang in there and stay a little closer.
41:21He's got to get in the inside of that jab.
41:25He's staying right on the outside of it.
41:26He's got to get in the inside.
41:27He's looking to get in the inside.
41:30He hasn't bent his knees.
41:31He hasn't bobbed his knees in the entire fight.
41:33That's what you have to do to move inside a jab.
41:37The whole side of his face is swollen.
41:40Keep it in the back.
41:42Back and neck again.
41:44Big right hand by Williams.
41:46That went good.
41:47That went good.
41:48The uppercut has wobbled Chez.
41:49Hit the bell.
41:53Another impressive round for Williams.
41:55Even though Chez rallied briefly,
41:57Williams was able to keep the play.
42:01That's what he's got to do.
42:02You have to take it away from the champion.
42:04You have to be aggressive in there.
42:06You've got to want it.
42:07I just want to watch him do this round.
42:08Go back to your jab.
42:09Your jab is what you do.
42:12Go back here near the final seconds of the round.
42:14There was that left to the ear.
42:15Big right hand by Williams behind it.
42:18Beautiful combination.
42:19Straight jab.
42:20There's that vicious uppercut again.
42:22That wobbled Chez.
42:23The uppercut.
42:24He wasn't ready for it.
42:25And then the bell sounded.
42:27And it looks like it's all over.
42:29It is.
42:30They have stopped the fight.
42:32Dr. Flip Komanski
42:34in concert with the referee Carlos Katia
42:38and Charles Williams.
42:39I don't think he could quite believe
42:41that he wasn't having to go out for the 10th round.
42:44But he is the new IBF light heavyweight champion.
42:48Prince Charles Williams from Mansfield, Ohio
42:51has become a tough Philadelphia fighter
42:54and has won himself the world title
42:56in the fourth defense by Bobby Chez.
42:59And he was clearly the better man.
43:01Knocked down at the end of round two.
43:03He came back and dominated the action
43:05from that point forward.
43:07Exactly what I was saying in the beginning.
43:09You can hit a guy.
43:10Put him on twisty.
43:11Then hit him again with that hard punch
43:13and wake him right up.
43:14And that's exactly what he did.
43:15And ever since from that point on
43:17I've seen Williams winning.
43:23So there is Bobby Chez.
43:25Bobby Chez.
43:26Disappointed crowd around him
43:28being attended to there.
43:29Tremendous lump over his right eye.
43:32And they could have used that ice bag
43:34a little earlier perhaps.
43:35But Charles Williams was the better man.
43:38And look what they give the announcement
43:40from Chuck Hall.
43:42Congratulations.
43:46Ladies and gentlemen
43:48on the advice of the ringside position
43:50Dr. Flip Komanski

44:03of the world
44:04Prince Charles Williams.
44:24Here we go.
44:25We're with the new champion
44:26Prince Charles Williams.
44:27Get that mouthpiece out
44:28so you can talk Charles.
44:29Take your time here.
44:30Everybody in this corner
44:31plenty excited.
44:32That's understandable.
44:36Charles.
44:37Charles what a tremendous victory for you.
44:39When I saw you just earlier
44:40about a couple of hours ago
44:41you seemed very confident.
44:43And you certainly came in here
44:44and took the play away.
44:45When you were knocked down
44:46there at the end of round number two
44:48did you imagine that you could possibly
44:50come back the way you did?
44:52Yeah definitely.
44:53First of all I have to say
44:54thanks to my mighty Jesus Christ
44:55giving me the spirit and power
44:56to win this fight.
44:58And thanks to my trainer
45:00and everyone that was involved
45:01and all my sparring partners.
45:03When Bobby hit me
45:04and knocked me down
45:05I knew he was a champion.
45:07It gave me more courage
45:08to get up and fight harder
45:10if I want to be a world champ.
45:13And I get up and I fought hard
45:15and thank God
45:16that I came out victorious.
45:18When you were planning for this fight
45:19in training and so on
45:20did you see it going away
45:21forget the knockdown
45:22but the course of the fight
45:23the way that you were able to
45:24out jab and take control of him
45:26is that what you expected?
45:28Yeah.
45:29I expected to come in
45:30I knew I had the hand speed
45:31and the punching power on him.
45:33But he surprised me
45:34with the punching power
45:35he was in great condition
45:36but thanks to my trainer Billy
45:38he got me in great excellent shape
45:40for this fight.
45:41And I knew I had
45:42the hand speed
45:43and the punching power on him.
45:44And I know sooner or later
45:45that I'll go catch him.
45:47But when he knocked me down
45:48he surprised me
45:49with the punching power that he had.
45:50I didn't expect for him
45:51to hit that hard.
45:52Well now of course
45:53once you got that lump over his eye
45:54we're going to go back
45:55into the fight
45:56show you some of the action from it.
45:59Here is early on in the fight
46:02when you were knocked down
46:04by Bobby Chez
46:05a big right hand
46:07wobbled you
46:08and another right hand
46:09will send you down here
46:10and it looked like
46:11maybe it was curtains
46:12for Charles Williams early.
46:14Yeah.
46:15But I was in excellent shape
46:16like I said
46:17thanks to my trainer
46:18that gave me the strength
46:19to be able to get up
46:20and win this fight.
46:21Well you sure had to be
46:22in great shape.
46:23It was a tribute
46:24to your conditioning
46:25and your stamina
46:26because it could well
46:27have been over there
46:28the round ended
46:29and even early
46:30in round number three
46:31he came out
46:32of course he saw
46:33you were still not
46:34quite back to form
46:35and went after you
46:36but suddenly
46:37you turned it around.
46:38Did he get a little arm weary
46:39in that exchange
46:40at the early part
46:41of round number three?
46:42Yeah really.
46:43I think as he knocked me down
46:44and I get up
46:45and started to punch
46:46the best thrown
46:47I took it hard from him.
46:48Tremendous uppercut.
46:49Marvelous.
46:50Marvin Hagler commented
46:51on that great uppercut.
46:52You used that very effectively
46:53throughout the fight.
46:54Oh yeah definitely.
46:55I worked on that
46:56all in the fight.
46:57As I watched the tape
46:58of Bobby
46:59I seen all the guys
47:00that he was fighting
47:01wasn't throwing uppercuts
47:02he would be
47:03overly coming with it.
47:04When he comes up
47:05he leaves his hand open
47:06for the uppercut
47:07and that's all I was
47:08working on in the gym.
47:09Charles you were the challenger
47:10you were the underdog
47:11the talk was
47:12maybe of a Chaz
47:13Hearns fight
47:14and now suddenly
47:15it's Charles Williams
47:16in the picture.
47:17Will you come back
47:18after the light heavyweight?
47:19Yeah definitely.
47:20I think I proved to the world
47:21that I am a great champ.
47:22I beat the best champ
47:23in the light heavyweight division.
47:24I take my hat off
47:25to Bobby.
47:26Bobby is a great fighter
47:27and I feel
47:28right now
47:29Hearns
47:30Hagler
47:31whoever
47:32Rodan
47:33want to come up
47:34I'm ready for him.
47:35I feel
47:36it's my time
47:37and I'm the best
47:38in the light heavyweight division.
47:39Well you certainly proved
47:40the IBF championship
47:41here tonight.
47:42Congratulations to you.
47:43Prince Charles Williams
47:44can we get Bobby over?
47:45Can we get Bobby over?
47:47Bobby
47:48Bobby Chaz
47:49and
47:50I'm not surprised
47:51that he agreed
47:52to come over
47:53despite
47:54what must be
47:55a devastating
47:56loss for him
47:57and he's got the sunglasses
47:58on already
47:59but
48:00Bobby
48:01you had the guy down
48:02at the end of round 2
48:03it looked like
48:04Williams might be finished
48:05for the night
48:06but were you surprised
48:07he was able to bounce back
48:08like that?
48:09Well he wasn't down
48:10and he jumped in
48:11to give him an 8 count
48:12when there's no such thing
48:13as a standing 8 count
48:14in Las Vegas
48:15and I used a little more energy
48:16than I wanted to
48:17so I relaxed
48:18a little bit
48:19knowing I had 2 rounds
48:201 pretty good
48:21and I got hit with a left hook
48:22in the eye
48:23and it closed
48:24like immediately
48:25and it's not the vision
48:26that bothers me as much
48:27as the pain
48:28every time I got hit
48:29it was just more
48:30than I could take
48:31I stayed there and tried
48:32for another 6 or 7 rounds
48:33but
48:34you know
48:35I think it was
48:36a wiser thing to do
48:37than jeopardize my health
48:38and I had to fight
48:39another day.
48:40Well that's right
48:41I don't think there's any
48:42question about that
48:43he had an excellent jab
48:44and it was a good target
48:45for him.
48:46Well I had trouble
48:47seeing it
48:48and you know
48:49it's right
48:50the jab was coming
48:51from my right side
48:52I had a little trouble
48:53seeing it
48:54and I caught him early
48:55I had him in trouble
48:56if there was another
48:5715 seconds in first
48:58round fights over
48:59but sometimes
49:00a little luck in timing
49:01or part of the elements
49:02it wasn't my day
49:03you know those days
49:04are bound to happen
49:05I trained hard
49:06it had nothing to do
49:07with my conditioning
49:08or what not
49:09again I felt
49:10there was no such thing
49:11as a standing 8 in Vegas
49:12he wasn't down
49:13he was in trouble
49:14and Carlos Padilla
49:15came in and gave him
49:16an 8 count
49:17he wasn't down
49:18and he did do the wrong
49:19thing there.
49:20Alright Bobby
49:21well now of course
49:22only your second loss
49:23and as you've already
49:24indicated
49:25better to save your
49:26health here
49:27not try to go on
49:28with the eye in that
49:29condition
49:30obviously you're
49:31expecting to come
49:32right back.
49:33Well yeah
49:34I've been beat before
49:35with the ham show fight
49:36and the first loss
49:37is much more devastating
49:38at this particular point
49:39I lose a title
49:40so you know
49:41I'm really dejected
49:42I've been fighting
49:43for a lot of years
49:4415 years
49:45since I'm 10 years old
49:467 years a pro
49:47I've got another 5 years
49:48I'll be back
49:49and hopefully
49:50Williams will still
49:51have it
49:52so it'll be some
49:53sweet revenge
49:54just gives me
49:55something else
49:56to shoot for.
49:57Alright Bobby
49:58well it was a
49:59courageous display
50:00once the eye
50:01was so badly swollen
50:02we look forward
50:03to seeing you
50:04back in action.
50:05I'll be back.
