00:00Oh, there's Mr. Vince Pergolatti.
00:17Here we go.
00:22We are underway. Maddy Garlott and Francisco da Silva.
00:26Garlott in the black and the white.
00:33In the black and the gold, Francisco da Silva, Andy Raymond, Nathan De Carlo,
00:39Brett Bonetti ringside calling the action here.
00:43It has been quite some time since we've seen Maddy Garlott in centering.
00:48We're going all the way back to July 2014.
00:53Still looks all right, doesn't he?
00:56He does, he does. He used to be a little bit lighter, obviously, back in the day.
01:01He started in the featherweight division. He looks a little bit heavier right now.
01:08But, yeah, first fight back since July 2014, like you said,
01:12and he's looking to start a new chapter in his book.
01:16I don't know why they do it, the boxers. They love the comebacks.
01:20It's about motivation. It's about determination.
01:23They have all got amazing resilience.
01:29He was quite the act back in the day, Brett, wasn't he?
01:32He certainly was, and I think that the house that Danny Green built
01:35has got something to do with him being in the ring tonight
01:37because he was actually, he had six fights here at HBF Stadium.
01:41He was known at Chelms Stadium back then.
01:43He was actually on the card in 2012 when Danny Green defeated Danny Santiago that night.
01:48And, obviously, Matt Garlett had a win that night as well.
01:51Yeah, debuted in this venue back in 2009, so he'll be really at home here.
01:57Yes, what is the old Chelms Stadium, now HBF,
02:02and walks across the ring, snapping out the jab a couple of times.
02:08Yeah, Matty Garlett fought for a 12-round regional title.
02:12Now, all of a sudden, he's way back down to four-rounders.
02:15It's almost like he's starting again.
02:17Very experienced amateur.
02:19He's been around the block so many times, Andy,
02:21so he knows what to do in there.
02:23He's just got to get his eye back in.
02:25Obviously, his shot's off.
02:27And, yeah, Da Silva, he's looking like a tricky customer,
02:30keeping his guard really high at this stage,
02:32but I think that he'll drop as the fight progresses.
02:36Slightly bigger of the two athletes, Da Silva.
02:40Matty Garlett.
02:42He's not going to be as smooth, as slick as he was,
02:45certainly not after all these years,
02:47but there was a time where Matty Garlett,
02:49oh, wow, to watch him was just beautiful.
02:52And you can already see glimpses of the athlete inside Matty Garlett,
02:57despite what his birth certificate may say.
03:02Yeah, I think it must be noted, too,
03:04that Da Silva hasn't had a fight since 2018 as well,
03:07and both boys really coming off the grass for this one.
03:10So they're evenly matched, that's for sure.
03:17Da Silva had three fights in 2017
03:19and won all those three fights as well,
03:21and then, as you said, Nathan, had a fight in 2018
03:24and had a break ever since.
03:26Unbelievable.
03:27As we see some highlights of that first round,
03:30there's a little bit of a feeling out round for both boys.
03:32Obviously has such a big, long layoff, both of them,
03:36so you can understand that
03:37that was a really good hook there from Matty Garlett.
03:40Like I said, once he finds his feet and finds his range,
03:44he's a really dangerous fighter, is Matty Garlett.
03:48On behalf of the promoters,
03:49a big thank you to our major sponsors,
03:51Emoco and the Kid Recruit,
03:53in conjunction with the Western Australian State Government
03:55through Tourism Western Australia,
03:57walking on a dream.
03:58This is history, and you're all a part of it.
04:05Little split around the left eye.
04:08That won't be an issue for Team Garlett.
04:13Back into it, round number two.
04:15We're just going for three-minute rounds.
04:19It'll feel like a 12-rounder for these two lads.
04:27Straight away, he starts much better this second round.
04:30The snappiness of that jab, followed up by that right hand,
04:33just missing the mark, the right hand.
04:34If he found a home for that,
04:36I'll tell you what, the silver would have felt it.
04:49Byron Bomba gives Pergolotti,
04:51a very experienced referee here in Western Australia.
04:58And in they go.
04:59Early stages of round number two.
05:01Garlett, really the aggressor here.
05:06He's initiating the fight,
05:09depending on what you are looking for.
05:13Back of ticks there.
05:14Back in the day, Andy, he was known as a really slick boxer,
05:17even in the amateur days.
05:18He was really good.
05:19And I think when he starts with his jab,
05:21that's when he looks the best.
05:22Sometimes he's leading with that right hand,
05:24but keeping himself exposed.
05:25Obviously, putting his chin up in the air
05:27when he leads with that right hand.
05:28If he can get back on the jab
05:30and start everything off that jab,
05:32I think he's going to really put himself
05:35in the forefront for this win.
05:42Really using that jab nicely.
05:45Garrett seems to have that speed advantage at the moment
05:49and the power advantage probably to De Silva.
05:53I say it respectfully,
05:54but it's probably actually a bit surprising
05:56that Maddie's got the speed advantage.
05:58Natural athlete, I get all that,
06:00because it's been ten years
06:02since he gloved up professionally.
06:07This fight is so important to him as well.
06:09You mentioned before, Andy, about the Stephen Michael Cup.
06:12Stephen Michael is a legend Australian rules footballer
06:15in not just WA, in Australia as well,
06:18Hall of Famer in the AFL.
06:20And this trophy means a lot to both fighters.
06:27Back into that centering position,
06:29snapping out the left hand to Silva.
06:32And this is where both boys have to work.
06:34It's only a four-round contest, Andy.
06:36You obviously have to stake your claim very quickly,
06:38because you let a round slip by,
06:40all of a sudden you're behind the eight ball
06:41to get a decision.
06:42So both boys should really take advantage
06:44of every opportunity they've got
06:46throughout this whole three-minute duration,
06:48that's for sure.
06:52Final 30 seconds of round number two.
06:55As I said, we're shooting for just four three-minute rounds.
07:01You could see the pace of this bout
07:03drop off the edge of a cliff
07:05by halfway through round number four,
07:07if indeed we do go that far.
07:11Stop, stop, stop, stop.
07:17Nice.
07:20Introductory fight back into it for Matty Garland.
07:26Well-titled boxing proudly supported
07:28by the West Australian State Government
07:30through Tourism Western Australia.
07:32They have been just fabulous
07:35in the lead-up to tonight's action.
07:38You see some replays of that second round,
07:41and it started faster than it finished, that's for sure.
07:43Both boys already starting to feel the pinch,
07:45obviously, coming off those lengthy layoffs.
07:48It started really fast,
07:50and it started with that jab first from Matty Garland.
07:53So that was a good turn there from De Silva,
07:55got his man where he wanted him to be,
07:57right in that corner.
08:00Things starting to heat up here.
08:07Wide eye, Matty Garland.
08:13He is all ears inside the corner.
08:16Very calm corner too.
08:18We've spoken so many times
08:20about how important it is
08:22that 60-second rest between trainer and athlete.
08:28Doesn't need to be hurried,
08:29doesn't need to be rushed,
08:30doesn't need to be rushed,
08:31doesn't need to be rushed,
08:32doesn't need to be rushed,
08:33doesn't need to be rushed,
08:34doesn't need to be rushed,
08:35doesn't need to be rushed,
08:36doesn't need to be hurried,
08:37doesn't need to be rushed,
08:38doesn't need to be panicked or frantic.
08:43And it doesn't have to be information overload.
08:45Obviously, when boys are fatigued
08:48and women are fatigued in the corner,
08:50the last thing they can do
08:51is absorb too much information.
08:53So one or two instructions,
08:54and that's all they need.
08:55That's about all us blokes can take
08:57if we're being super honest.
09:01Big supporter base over here, Matty Garland.
09:03He's a really good guy, isn't he, Brett?
09:05Like, he's...
09:06Because he's that type of guy.
09:08He's a guy really easy to like.
09:10Certainly is, and he's been around for so long.
09:12As soon as the fight got announced,
09:14the boxing fans over here
09:15knew exactly who he was and what he'd done.
09:17So it's great to see him back in HBF Stadium tonight.
09:23Good moment for Garland.
09:25Yeah, it was.
09:26And he's continuing to set up nicely with the jab.
09:31The question for both these guys
09:32is whether it's a thing.
09:33It is a thing for some fighters,
09:35but some fighters can come back after a long layoff
09:37and just put it on.
09:39Certainly their timing's a little bit off.
09:41I mean, obviously, I've seen a lot more of Garland
09:44than De Silva,
09:45but, I mean, he just used to be so sharp and so snappy
09:48and used to just rock the head back
09:50of his opponent continuously.
09:52But obviously, you know, with age and obviously that layoff,
09:55he hasn't got quite the sharp skills he used to,
09:58but that's expected, I guess, with all that time off.
10:03Pumping out the left hand, De Silva.
10:06As he has done a couple of times, De Silva,
10:09he might be throwing the left hand out,
10:11but he's not following it up with anything
10:13and he's almost just standing there in the pocket.
10:15Exactly.
10:16And he's going back in straight lines, Andy,
10:18so that's allowing Garland to march forward.
10:20So when he's going backwards,
10:22he needs to come off on angles
10:23and obviously, you know, create that bit of movement
10:26so Garland almost falls over himself.
10:28At the moment, he's just going back in a straight line
10:31and Garland can just keep on going down
10:33and keep on throwing his punches down the pipe.
10:38Final minute, round number three.
10:41Francisco De Silva and Matty Garland
10:45contesting for the Stephen Michael Cup,
10:49as Brett explained earlier.
10:53Pushing out the left hand again, Garland.
10:55De Silva just hasn't initiated enough for mine.
10:58And that's, he's being very reactive at the moment,
11:01but he's just getting beat to the punch at this stage
11:04by Matty Garland.
11:08The jab's coming out well for Garland,
11:10but right now, he's overreaching with his right hand.
11:13Every time he throws his right hand,
11:14it's almost like he's overreaching,
11:16so he's not bringing his feet with his punches
11:19and, you know, once again, I'm wondering
11:22might be a little bit more critical,
11:23but, I mean, that time off would have played a massive factor,
11:26but if he can start fine-tuning these things,
11:29it'll be great for the future and for this comeback.
11:33What's the plan for Matty Garland, Brett?
11:35Is this a one-off or are we looking at
11:39part two of a decorated career?
11:41It's an interesting one, Andy,
11:43because, again, that trophy that we see
11:45the girls holding right now,
11:46this is basically part of the reason why he came back
11:50and the fact that he had six fights here before,
11:52part of history as well,
11:53so such a big occasion.
11:55As soon as the call came,
11:56he had no hesitation on signing up straight away,
11:59so I believe it's a one-off at this stage
12:01after such a long layoff.
12:02He wants that trophy pretty badly
12:04and he's got one more round to do it.
12:08But you never know with these guys.
12:10Exactly right. They love it.
12:11And a win might change everything, too.
12:14Get that hunger back.
12:15Exactly.
12:17This is it, the fourth and final round
12:20in our first televised bout.
12:23Matty Garland and Francisco da Silva.
12:26We are live around Australia on 7+.
12:29It is da Silva in the black and the gold
12:32and Matty Garland in the black and the white.
12:35Garland from mine,
12:37comfortably ahead on the judges' scorecards
12:40after five rounds.
12:43Comfortably ahead on the judges' scorecards
12:46after three rounds.
12:49The longer you've been in boxing,
12:50the more you see, I guess,
12:52and you can never be 100% certain
12:55exactly what the judges are thinking,
12:57but for Matty Garland,
12:59too slick,
13:01volume of punches as well,
13:03and deserves to be ahead on the judges' scorecards.
13:06Certainly. He's just outworking him.
13:08Obviously, he's punching three to his one.
13:11So, yeah, he's deserving to be in front,
13:14that's for sure.
13:18He's worked on a lot in this fight.
13:19He's just trying to establish that jab
13:21and I think that's been the key.
13:22He started off each round a lot better than da Silva,
13:25so whether da Silva sways a couple of the judges
13:28at the later stages of the round,
13:30you never know,
13:31but I totally agree with your assessment.
13:33I think that Garland is ahead on the cards so far,
13:36but, again, he's got under a couple of minutes
13:38to see whether da Silva can turn it around.
13:40At least on our cards.
13:41Yeah.
13:43Unfortunately, our opinions don't particularly matter.
13:46It's the three scoring judges at ringside.
13:49This is like being at home for me, boys.
13:52My opinion doesn't count.
13:54We've seen strange things in the world of boxing,
13:56haven't we?
13:57Haven't we?
13:58And that was good, a good variation.
14:00That was probably the first time
14:01both boys have gone to the body there.
14:03You saw Matty Garland start with a jab
14:05and then came down to the body
14:06with a straight right hand and scored.
14:09Obviously, these are smaller round fights.
14:12You don't invest in the body too much
14:14because they don't really catch up with you.
14:16There's more head-hunting with these shorter round fights.
14:19Nice left there by Garland.
14:22We mentioned this earlier,
14:23and we'll mention this while there's a couple
14:25of smaller athletes in the ring
14:27where it's super lightweight at the moment.
14:29We've got the biggest legal size ring
14:33you can have in boxing.
14:36It is a monster ring,
14:38so quite often you see it provides room
14:43for a boxer to get out of the way
14:45and not to engage.
14:46But these two, these two older statesmen
14:50and little fellas,
14:52they're at a good pace.
14:54It really has considering the size of the ring
14:56and that you've got so much room
14:58and so much area to hide.
15:00Certainly, and part of it's because
15:03Matty Garland knows how to cut off a ring as well.
15:05You can see sometimes he's tracking down
15:07and putting his opponent in the corners,
15:10and that helps as well.
15:11Just by a slight shuffle of his back foot,
15:13bringing it up, squaring himself off,
15:15making it hard for his opponent to escape left or right.
15:18Final stages.
15:23Last couple of seconds of this one, Matty Garland.
15:26Welcome back to professional boxing.
15:29It has been over 10 years,
15:31and observe that smile on the face.
15:34What an adrenaline rush, an emotional rush
15:38it would be for Matty Garland at the moment.
15:41He was a semi-mate of Enter here under Danny Green
15:44on a couple of occasions.
15:46Very popular young fella.
15:50And he's about to have a trophy added
15:53to his cabinet at home.
15:56He looks exhausted.
15:59I love it.
16:01He had a good look at that Stephen Michael Cup
16:03on the way through.
16:04You can tell by Francisco da Silva's reaction
16:06as soon as the bell went,
16:08he felt that he hadn't done enough.
16:19Little nick around the left eye.
16:22No issue whatsoever moving forward.
16:27See Des Headland in the ring as well,
16:29former Brisbane Lion Premiership player
16:31and a fantastic champion for the Fremantle Dockers,
16:34Fremantle Football Club as well.
16:36Part of Paradigm Entertainment has put together
16:39this fantastic card tonight.
16:41It looks like he could throw him the big fella too.
16:43I wouldn't want to be standing across the ring.
16:46James O'Shea has the numbers in,
16:48so let's get the boys centering.
17:00Which is often easier said than done.
17:06All right, ladies and gentlemen,
17:07we'll get set to make this one official.
17:09We're now two fighters to center ring
17:11as we present our trophy here,
17:13the Stephen Michael Cup.
17:15Please put your hands together.
17:16Tim Kelly for the West Coast Eagles
17:17in the ring with us, ladies and gentlemen.
17:18He's going to make the trophy presentation here.
17:20Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together
17:22for James O'Shea.
17:24Ladies and gentlemen,
17:28put your hands together for both fighters.
17:30What a great fight here.
17:37The first card reads 40 to 36.
17:39The second judge judges the contest 40 to 36.
17:42And your third judge scores about 40 to 36.
17:46A unanimous decision.
17:48And the winner of the Stephen Michael Cup,
17:51and it goes to the blue corner,
17:54Matt Garland.
18:07He's going to make the presentation here.
18:11Very proud moment from Matt.
18:17All right, ladies and gentlemen,
18:18we'll grab a couple of words.
