04:16When I spoke to him earlier on today,
04:17he said watch out for him today.
04:19He's going to be kind of a dark horse, if you like.
04:21He said there's no works which aren't something
04:23that Justin Cooper loves,
04:25and he said on top of that,
04:26he's one of the fastest guys in the rhythm.
04:28As Eli Tomac looks to make work of his teammate there
04:32and take that lead,
04:33but Justin Cooper obviously still in a great position.
04:35Guys, I said he's fast in the rhythm section.
04:38He's good in these fast, wide, open sections.
04:41Now we're going to see if he can hang on the back

05:46versus forcing it when he's not back to 100% yet.

05:51the broken thumb and surgery for Jet Lawrence,
05:5366 days since surgery, back to racing now.

05:58He's had about four months at this point,
06:00and an incredibly quick recovery for these two, James.

06:04I mean, the fact that he's out here riding is impressive,
06:06but yeah, going over that table top,
06:08I think it's just a g-force,
06:09and right before the finish line,
06:11when he went into that wall,
06:12you could see how his body collapsed.
06:13That would be an injury.
06:14If it is hurting, that would be a problem, Will.
06:17Yeah, I just wanted to fill you guys in on this recovery,
06:19because it is, like you said, Jason,
06:21incredibly fast compared there to the other two riders
06:24with similar injuries.
06:25And talking to his physiotherapist,
06:27Dr. G, as everyone calls him, Dr. Gubnik,
06:29he said, honestly, this was just the work
06:31that Jet Lawrence put in.
06:33He's asked him to come to California
06:35during his six weeks of rehab there,
06:37and he said he went into physio two times a day,
06:41every single day during that time.
06:43He'd go to lunch, he'd come back again.
06:45And he said that work,
06:46he's like, we can't prove it necessarily,
06:47but that work there definitely shows.
06:49Obviously, he's got youth on his side, too.
06:51Well, it's helping.
06:52He needs everything he has got,
06:53because he's battling Cooper.
06:55He's familiar foes from the 250 class,
06:58and now Lawrence is up to second.

07:02breaking that hard,
07:03and the resistance coming through the handlebars

07:11One thing that really impresses me with Jet Lawrence,
07:15I know he's not winning,
07:16I know he didn't win the first moto,
07:18but being able to come out here
07:19and stick to your game plan,

09:17so maybe that's a different formula

09:21it'd make me have a few nightmares for sure,
09:23but Chase Sexton is a champion.

10:04he's struggling with,

10:12this is really, like, the first time
10:14that Jet Lawrence has been able to get
10:16in a really good battle on a faster track
10:19with the guy like, with Eli Tomac.

10:23it would be cool to hear Jet's reaction
10:26to what this battle is like
10:28riding behind Eli on a faster hybrid track
10:33and not only Supercross.
10:34Do you remember last year
10:35in Jet's rookie pro motocross season,
10:37Eli was out?
10:38Yes, and Jet had a lot of thoughts
10:40about coming into Supercross
10:41and he had not raced Eli
10:42and he wanted to learn from the hands
10:45of one of the greatest riders to ever do it.
10:47And we are finally getting that type of battle.
10:50We had so much talk about Sexton versus Lawrence,
10:53but let's not take the multi-time champ,
10:56the living legend,
10:57the man who is second on the all-time wins list
11:00for Supercross.
11:01Oh, Phil Micheletti, the veteran,
11:03is out for a great first moto.
11:06But this is the battle
11:07between the living legend
11:08and the next star of this sport.
11:10They're fighting for the win today
11:12and who knows what momentum that could mean
11:14for the future.
11:15Absolutely.
11:16And this race is going to come out,
11:18Eli missed that quarter out there,
11:19but Eli, this is all the experience
11:22your whole career
11:23because he knows at one point,
11:25he's not going to pull away from Jet.
11:26And so what you start doing,
11:27you start having that race against him.
11:30Like, okay, once he closed in,
11:31I'm going to have to pick it up here.
11:33So Eli's racing to win this race,
11:36but he's not racing to pull away from Jet.
11:38He knows that ain't probably going to happen.
11:40So we'll see how this plays out
11:42and hopefully that number four
11:43kind of stays in that distance.

12:49When we first saw Jet start to add pressure,
12:52that's where he was making the time up.
12:54He's able to pull away from Sexton
12:55and make up a little bit of time.
12:57It seems like Eli's a little bit faster
12:59everywhere around.
13:00So if Eli can put, I think, that together
13:02and maybe figure out a couple of things,
13:03I think he's capable of pulling away.
13:05But Jet just has a couple of lines
13:07that are keeping him in this race.
13:08Yeah, no, I agree.
13:10I mean, Jet definitely has,
13:11and he's keeping his momentum up,
13:13which obviously is going to help him.
13:14But to me, I don't think it's whether
13:16Eli can pull away.
13:18I think Eli could.
13:19He's just not trying to do that
13:20because it's going to be harder for him
13:22as far as he can't pull away enough
13:24to make this race easy.
13:26But he's going to make sure that Jet,
13:28it's almost somewhat easy to keep him close to you,
13:30keep him contained.
13:32And the veteran rider that Eli is, right,
13:36he's going to run his pace.
13:37I don't think that...
13:38He's not going to try to pull away.
13:40Does he want to pull away?
13:41Of course he does.
13:42But I think he rides at the highest level
13:44that he possibly can.
13:46And what that rewards him
13:47is what that rewards him.
13:48I mean, a lot like when you and I
13:49used to race, James.
13:50I mean, if I go over the limit
13:52trying to beat you
13:53and I know I can't pull away from you,
13:55I'm either going to go into the red zone
13:58and get tired and fatigued
13:59or I'm going to risk falling down.
14:01So Eli and how much experience he has,
14:04I think this is helping him in that situation.

14:09And that's exactly what I meant.
14:10Like, Eli, yeah, he could probably go faster,
14:12but what does that put him at?
14:13But it's a lot easier just keeping him here.
14:15When he gets close, get on the gas.
14:17Eli looks very aggressive to me.
14:19He looks really comfortable.
14:20And with that paddle tire,
14:22there's going to be parts of this racetrack
14:24where he is going to struggle.
14:25If you notice, some of the exits at the corner,
14:27it's like he's sliding out a little bit more than Jett.
14:30But then in the sand section,
14:31this latter part, it's working for him.
14:34So find out. Six minutes left.
14:36And I'm going to tell you,
14:37like, Jett's in a tough spot right here.
14:39I mean, the dude is getting absolutely pelted with roost.
14:43And those things are like sitting in front of a paintball
14:45and just getting absolutely annihilated by it.
14:48And you're having to hold your breath at times.
14:51He's in a tough spot.
14:52Yeah. And you notice when Eli went on that table top
14:54and jumped off, his rear end was spinning.
14:56That's that paddle tire.
14:58And the difference between the two,
14:59maybe he can't get the grip that he wants to
15:01because it's so hard right there.
15:03But still, those guys are running.
15:05And that number four, he's still right there.
15:08Problem is not getting there.
15:10It's getting past them.
15:11And that's where the challenge comes with Chase.
15:13And it's so hard to pass these guys at this level.
15:16They're so good at their craft.
15:18And they have a sense, you know,
15:20they know they have a good idea most of the time
15:22of where you might get by them.
15:24So they'll close that opportunity off for you,
15:27trying to get by, which makes it that much harder
15:29to make a move.

15:42And here is this year's pro motocross champion,
15:44Chase Sexton, closing and closing and closing on those two.

15:55shuffled back to sixth, ahead of Malcolm Stewart.

16:29So see if Eli can get that quad.

16:35And it does seem like a jet would actually hit that.
16:38It would mean getting so much more time.

16:47doing it the way that Eli does,
16:49it just puts too much force on that thumb.
16:51And I'm totally speculating right here,
16:53but it would seem like it'd hurt a lot more.

17:01And as this race is going, he is only getting better.
17:04It's about as close as he has been to tow back.

18:53once he realized that Eli, once he pulled away
18:56and he started closing him, Jet probably was like,

19:10I mean, that's worth half a second a lap easily.

19:15he's happy in a lot of different ways right now.

19:19but this number one continues to do what he's doing.

19:25if Jet was able to come off the injured list and win,
19:29and now it has gone beyond theory.
19:31This is practice now.
19:33And the way he's doing it at the second moto
19:35at the end of the day,
19:37the place that you thought maybe you might have a chance,
19:39because of that wrist being faded,
19:41he hasn't raised, he'll probably get tired.
19:43He's looking like the strongest rider on this track.
19:46Oh, just insult to injury.
19:48He can't let up, though, because Tomac is right there.
19:52And this is interesting.
19:54This is the championship points at SMX as they run.
19:57Tomac putting in one last charge toward Lawrence.
20:00He cannot get that quad, though, through the rhythm.
20:03Oh, Jet messed that rhythm up well,
20:05and then Eli messed it up, too.
20:08Man, it's like when you get excited,
20:10it's like, oh, I got him, and then you make a mistake.
20:12But say nothing more.
20:14Eli Tomac and Jet Lawrence,
20:16I mean, all these guys who came up,
20:18but really cool to see these two riders out front
20:20have stepped up, they came for this playoffs,
20:22and, man, they must have missed racing.
20:25Two injured riders, Tomac and Lawrence,
20:28out for the summer with thumb injuries,
20:30and they are going to go 1-2
20:32and make up a lot of ground in the SMX championship
20:35because they were pretty far back in the rankings.
20:38I believe 8th and 11th ranked coming in
20:40because they missed so many pro moto cross rounds,
20:43but they're making up that ground in a hurry.
20:46And there you see, Lawrence would be only four points
20:49off of Sexton in the championship.
20:51Yeah, you can tell these guys are struggling,
20:53see, going down that.
20:55Yeah, the overcast has broken off,
20:57and the sun is actually blaring down,
20:59and take a look at it when they come back this direction.

21:15Now, we've seen these guys, both of them,
21:17struggling on this rhythm section,
21:19so if Eli can get this thing good,
21:21you know, he might not pass him in the rhythm section,
21:23but if he can get out, we know how fast it is
21:25once you hit that quad towards the end, too.
21:28You tell anyone in these stands,
21:30they're getting Lawrence and Tomac battling for the lead
21:32in the last lap.
21:34That's what they paid the ticket price for, as advertised.
21:37This would be huge for Eli
21:39if he can get him.
21:41See, Jet went a little wide.
21:43He wants to make sure he got over that rhythm.
21:45Come on, Eli.
21:47Oh, he missed it. He missed the quad.
21:49I'll tell you what, though.
21:51Overall, in my opinion, James,
21:53I think this is a win-win for both riders
21:56for their own reasons.
