00:00:00And welcome in, everybody. Glad you're with us. An NL West matchup on the show. It's the
00:00:17Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the San Francisco Giants. Along with Chris Singleton, I'm John
00:00:23Chambi. And Chris, we've got an opportunity to watch one of the true superstars of the
00:00:27sport, Roger Conner. Always exciting to see him in action. And it seems like he consistently
00:00:32finds a way to impact the game. Yeah, Boogie. It's offensively at the plate, defensively
00:00:37when he's on the bases. And this guy's just a heads up player, but he's got so much talent
00:00:42and he makes the most of that. I believe it starts with his preparation because you never
00:00:46see him give away an at bat. Coming up on the first pitch and our pitcher in this game,
00:00:56Tim Keith. But Chris, he hasn't exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I'll
00:01:01say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans,
00:01:06in front of the city. And you know, this guy, no different. He wants to be more effective
00:01:11here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven't been great at home. I'm sure
00:01:15he wants to turn that around and we'll see if he's able to start that in this one. So
00:01:19just about in is the speedy, the pitch. That one off the mark and we're underway. First
00:01:35pitch 716. Next offering is in for a strike. Bounce to the right. McCovey takes it to
00:01:57the bag. One out the top of the first. Time to check out the Dodgers lineup. Reggie Smith
00:02:23steps to the plate for the Dodgers. Smith having a really nice first season in the
00:02:28big leagues. Definitely a rookie of the year candidate. Out towards right center field.
00:02:47Snags it on the run. Two away down. And now the center fielder, Duke Snyder. Year in and
00:02:58year out, this guy an MVP candidate. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Right hander
00:03:14kicks deals. And a swing and a miss there. Well, it looks to have some quality stuff
00:03:21on the hill today. Start this outing out. Pepper in the zone. Arm is loose and firing
00:03:26him in there. Ball to strike. Just off the inside edge. Good fastball there. I think
00:03:41it was a purpose pitch. Just want to make that hitter's feet uncomfortable. And that
00:03:46location will definitely do it. Next offering is downstairs. No score, just getting started
00:04:00the top of the first. And now a full count. I mean, that's perfect location right on the
00:04:10black. I mean, over and over again, this guy demonstrates the ability to hit those spots.
00:04:16They're so tough to do anything with as a hitter. The three-two is off the outside edge
00:04:20and that is ball four. Very close off the outside corner. Could have easily been called
00:04:25a strike in that location. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Sean Green. First offering
00:04:34and it just misses. And a pitch. Green tries to check his swing. Now a look to third. No
00:05:00swing. Two oh. And he flips a breaking ball in there or a change up. Either one. Something
00:05:14off speed. Good arm action on it. Whatever it was. At the belt and fires. That misses.
00:05:24Now three and one. Snyder off of first with two away. And that's ball four. Pretty easy
00:05:43walk right there. Last pitch wasn't even much to think about. So two on with two away. Here's
00:05:49the catcher. Roy Campanella. In there and it's all in one. Now the best way to shake
00:06:01off yesterday's struggles is to get on the board early. They've got a guy in scoring
00:06:05position. They've got to find a way here to get him in. The pitch. Swing and a miss and
00:06:19that's strike two. Clearly all in on the fastball right there. But it was a change up. Bottom
00:06:25just fell out of it. He's going to have to make an adjustment. Swing and he breaks his
00:06:42back. McCovey takes it himself and that is the third out of the inning. Dodgers strand
00:06:48a couple. And now we'll see what the Giants can do. No score. You're watching Major League
00:06:54Baseball on the show. We go to the bottom of the first. And today's starter Clayton
00:07:06Kershaw. Chris, he is a fun one to watch do his thing out there. Well, he comes in carrying
00:07:12a career ERA under three. He's been fantastic ever since he broke into the big leagues.
00:07:18Can't wait to watch him pitch today. Bottom of the first. Now it's going to be Frankie
00:07:24Frisch singing. He's a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone
00:07:30in the sport. How difficult is that to do? I'll just look at the back of my bubblegum
00:07:34card. You'll see how hard it is. These guys are great, man. They have the ability to look
00:07:39out there, but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch. Those that can really sharpen
00:07:44things on the outer half. Those are the ones that become elite. And that one felled off.
00:07:58Kershaw fires. Good eye right there. Kershaw the 2-1. Foul ball. The 2-2. And now it's
00:08:24filled up. The wind of the pitch. High fly ball out of the left center field. Lee under
00:08:43it. One down. Batting second. Now we take a peek at the Giants lineup. They do a lot
00:08:54of things well in this offense, Zingy. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers
00:08:58work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OVP teams in the league. Well,
00:09:04what I love about it is it's an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional
00:09:09league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys, even during batting practice,
00:09:13when it doesn't matter, they're practicing that type of approach, Boog. And when you
00:09:17have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right
00:09:21in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level, which ultimately
00:09:26leads to a lot of success. Gathers and throws the first. Two up, two down. You know, you
00:09:32translate on base percentage. It's basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage,
00:09:37they don't make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheehan says, OVP is life.
00:09:43And up next for the Giants, Barry Bonds. In there for strike one.
00:10:07The wind and the pitch. Going to count one and two. That's a really good job of laying
00:10:23off the 0-2 high fastball. It's going to make that pitcher really have to respect this hitter
00:10:28even though he's behind in the count. And down on strikes he goes. And that's the third
00:10:33down. Giants are down 1-2-3. We played an inning, no score. Back here at Oracle Park,
00:10:49all set for the start of the inning. And at the plate for the Dodgers, Gil Hodges. Singing
00:10:55you can't ask for anything more, this guy checks all the boxes offensively. He's the
00:11:00ultimate professional. And it doesn't just start at game time. It starts in the afternoon the way
00:11:05he prepares and gets ready for the ball game. I tell you what, his teammates feed off of him.
00:11:09Now this ball is well hit. This one's got a chance. And it hits the base of the wall.
00:11:15And that's a leadoff double. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job
00:11:23of going the other way. Number 10. Here's the third baseman, number 10. That one's in there,
00:11:49Owen Wan. After the loss yesterday afternoon where they really didn't ever get things going
00:11:53on offense, I think this is an important opportunity right here to pick up an early
00:11:57run. Second inning here, no score. Owen to as he waves at that one. Hitter's got some
00:12:11good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into
00:12:16the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether
00:12:22or not he can score on that base hit. And the pitch. And down on strikes. Not what you're
00:12:47looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout. And there's one away. It becomes pretty difficult
00:12:54as a teammate when a guy's struggling like this. You don't know if you want to go up
00:12:57and tell him to keep swinging it or if you want to give him his space, what exactly he
00:13:00needs. But right now it's clearly a struggle for him. And you're just hoping that somehow
00:13:05some way it'll click and he can get out of this as quickly as possible. And now Zach
00:13:15first pitch and he just misses. And he deals. Good eye right there. When you get ahead in
00:13:37the count, there's no doubt that the success rate goes up. And that's what he's been doing.
00:13:42It's made a big impact for him in recent games. And the right hander deals. Bonds moving
00:13:52back for this one. The two one. That one fouled off.
00:14:22Bounce to the left side. The throw to first two down. Well, he didn't recognize change
00:14:33up earlier enough. Got out in front a little bit, rolled over on it and beat it into the
00:14:37ground. The shortstop Peewee. And the batter will be the shortstop Peewee. First offering
00:14:57misses the mark. Oh, he never moved because he never had time to. But that kind of velocity,
00:15:03we prefer that pitcher work away. And a 1 0. Ground ball to the right side. Could be
00:15:14extra bases. And that's going to get into the corner. Run scores easily. And it's one
00:15:20nothing. Safely into second. He's got a double. Oh, a swing like that can help you come out
00:15:25of this struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game. But all he's trying to
00:15:30do at this point is help his team win. So the batting order turns over. Now it's the
00:15:41Dodger leadoff hitter, Jackie Robinson. Way inside and that hit him. Well, that one might
00:15:52sting for a bit, but it helps the team and it boosts the O.B.P. move. Sometimes that
00:15:57tradeoff is worth it, but sometimes it's not. Reggie Smith. Smith in the box with two gone.
00:16:12And it takes a look at a called strike. And he's down 0-2 as he swings through it. Cold night like
00:16:26tonight. Last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find
00:16:31that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you're going to try to catch things out. There's a swing
00:16:36and a drive. One run across. Frisch with a relay throw. He beats it safe. It's 3-0. Well, he found
00:16:51himself behind in the count right there, but he didn't give in. That's a good sound coming off
00:16:55the bat, man. And as he connected out front and ripped it into the outfield, that's one of those
00:17:00swings where you just don't even feel the ball hit the barrel. That's a pure stroke. Duke Snyder
00:17:06steps to the plate for the Dodgers. And that's in there for strike one.
00:17:25Righty to the plate. And that one wrapped foul.
00:17:37Got him. Good job at damage control right there. But three score in the inning. Two of them on this
00:17:58two-run double. It's now 3-0. Welcome back. Bottom of the inning. Here's a big power threat.
00:18:17Willie Mays. Kershaw back to work. And that one in the air center field. Snyder under this one.
00:18:30Calls it in, and there's one away. Batting fifth, the first baseman Willie McCovey. And here's the
00:18:45first baseman Willie McCovey. In there for strike one. One down, bases empty. Pitch misses there, and
00:19:08it's one and one. Patrick Johnson calling the balls and strikes. Pretty standard zone for Johnson.
00:19:14Sometimes you might get a little jumpy, a little excited and expand the zone, but usually you at
00:19:19least feel like the guy on the mound is earning it. And that's important because you got to make
00:19:23guys earn it. Swang and a miss. Now one of two. How much were you aware of the umpire scouting
00:19:30report, or even who was going to be umpiring? Not a whole lot. I mean, there were a couple of
00:19:35umpires that weren't real good. But outside of that, you just kind of went into the game,
00:19:40especially back when I was playing. The next offering misses, and it's two and two.
00:19:48The pitch. Hard hit left side. Tosses to first. Already two out here in the home
00:20:05half of inning number two. And digging in for San Francisco, Jeff Kent.
00:20:15This to third. Fires across the diamond, and it's a one-two-three inning. Nothing doing there for
00:20:33San Francisco. They trail it here, three-nothing. On to the third inning. Now it's the Dodger
00:20:44cleanup hitter, Sean Green. On the mound, he's got to remember his offense can score a lot. So
00:20:52if he can hit the reset button from here going forward, there's still a chance that his club
00:20:56can win this ballgame. First offering misses badly for ball one. And the pitch.
00:21:14Swings through that one. Well, he looks fresh out there. Just needs to get a little more confidence
00:21:24and remember how good he's been in the past. Next offering is down low. The pitch. Swings
00:21:49through that one for strike two. Stays alive.
00:22:19And the righty deals. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. One away. Roy Campanella
00:22:33grounded out his first time. He might just be the best hitting catcher in the game today.
00:22:38Well, Boog, he's so valuable. Does a good job behind the plate, but offensively, he's a middle
00:22:44of the order type of bad, especially when you talk about catchers and their number one job is
00:22:50to handle a pitching staff and prevent runs. This guy is able to add runs by producing them.
00:22:55Next offering upstairs. Good purpose pitch right there. Trying to tease him,
00:23:02get him to raise his sights, pop something up and make it an easy out.
00:23:06Next offering misses and now three and 0.
00:23:18Kicks and deals. That pitch gets the inside corner and that's strike one.
00:23:26And here it comes. Good plate appearance there. Able to take the walk. Well, he tried to nibble
00:23:42right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn't offer at it. Now he has somebody to
00:23:46worry about over at first. Man at first with one gone. Gil Hodgins steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
00:23:56In there in its own one. There was a high velocity fastball in the zone. I think a
00:24:09little frustration from walking the previous hitter. He's got good stuff. Pitch inside the
00:24:14zone and trust it. Next one misses and that's ball one.
00:24:27Next offering popped in the air. Right field. Two down.
00:24:45The batter. Number 10. Now the third baseman. Number 10.
00:25:10That one's in there. 0-1. When you're struggling out there on the mound,
00:25:14hitters know that there'll be plenty of opportunities within the at-bat to try to
00:25:18get something to hit hard. Next offering is in for a strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit.
00:25:32First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He's gonna have to
00:25:37figure something out and figure it out quickly. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that is that.
00:26:05One left for LA, but they lead at 3-0.
00:26:08Set for the bottom of the third. Now it's the right fielder. Obviously a guy who makes good
00:26:30contact, hits for average, but one of the things in today's game, the value in the fact that
00:26:35he hits both righties and lefties. And a foul ball. Next pitch is downstairs.
00:27:06Kicks and fires. Swing and a miss, and he struck him out and one away. Really love the pitch
00:27:16sequence right there. I'm telling you what, pitcher and catcher on the same page right now.
00:27:19And now the shortstop, Travis Jackson. This one chopped on the ground, but foul.
00:27:49Swing and a foul. Pushed off to the right.
00:28:08Line drive, and that's a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away.
00:28:14Just so sound in his mechanics. Hits against a firm front side,
00:28:20and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field.
00:28:25And here's the rookie catcher, number 28.
00:28:29First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:28:40Jackson leads off first with one away.
00:29:00The next pitch misses. Two balls, no strikes the count.
00:29:40A little wrinkle to that. I think there was. Yeah, a little slider action.
00:29:55Swing and a miss. Struck him out, and there's two away.
00:29:59Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We're seeing more fastballs in that location.
00:30:04Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger.
00:30:15Back to the top of the lineup, Frankie Frisch.
00:30:27That hits the dirt, and that is ball one.
00:30:34Two outs.
00:30:38On a line, base hit.
00:30:42Throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on, and two out.
00:30:46And his hitting streak continues. There have been almost no bad days for him in the past month.
00:30:52This guy's really good. He's got a lot of power.
00:30:56He's got a lot of speed. He's got a lot of speed.
00:31:00There have been almost no bad days for him in the past month.
00:31:04This guy's running hot, Boog, and people around the league are paying serious attention
00:31:08to this streak now, especially the pitchers that are trying to slow him down.
00:31:12So digging in, Roger Conner. He's 0 for 1.
00:31:16Ball one.
00:31:26First pitch, just misses.
00:31:36First and second, two down.
00:31:46Next pitch is outside.
00:32:08They say it went.
00:32:16Two on, two outs.
00:32:20In the dirt.
00:32:24Nothing happening on the bases, though.
00:32:28Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second.
00:32:32Nothing happening on the bases, though.
00:32:36Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second.
00:32:48Left field. Wheat has a beat on it.
00:32:52Makes the catch. Inning over. Giants leave a couple.
00:32:56Still down, 3-0.
00:33:02And welcome back.
00:33:06John Schambe with Chris Singleton
00:33:10and set to lead off the fourth, Zach Wheat.
00:33:26And a pitch.
00:33:32There's the strike. Not sure if he was expecting for the pitcher to come right at him,
00:33:36but he got a nice cookie there and just watched it the entire way.
00:33:48Fought off foul.
00:34:02Next offering upstairs.
00:34:06Really good take, especially with two strikes.
00:34:21Here comes a pinch.
00:34:25That one misses. It's 2-2.
00:34:32And that's
00:34:36downstairs and outside.
00:34:50And he walked him.
00:34:54A great back and forth and that it bad. He had to lay off some
00:34:58really close pitches and somehow, Boogie, found a way to keep the
00:35:02bat on his shoulder right there. I'll tell you right now, I couldn't have done it.
00:35:14Bunt attempt, but that goes foul.
00:35:18Runner at first with no outs here.
00:35:28Next offering is downstairs. Good speed on the base
00:35:32pass. He handles the bat very well. I wouldn't be surprised
00:35:36if the skipper puts on some type of hit and run or run and hit.
00:35:44Keith over to first. Wheat back in standing.
00:35:58The next offering
00:36:02misses and it's 2-1.
00:36:08Nobody out. Runner at first.
00:36:18Next offering is fouled back.
00:36:282-2 now.
00:36:32Grounder might be 2.
00:36:36Fired to second. On the stretch. It's a double play.
00:36:48Back to the top of the Dodgers order.
00:36:52And the batter now, Jackie Robinson. Good contact guy, good defender.
00:36:56This guy makes great contact. One of the best
00:37:00in the game at putting bat on ball. He's got such quick hands and he's
00:37:04gaining pitch recognition. That keeps him square to the plate and there's a good chance
00:37:08that his bat stays in the zone a long time and that produces solid
00:37:12contact consistently.
00:37:16Swing and a miss.
00:37:20And the count even 1-1. You know, you hear about a lot of guys who are
00:37:24three sports stars in college. Jackie Robinson, a four sports
00:37:28star. He was a division one standout in baseball, basketball, football
00:37:32and track. And a 1-1.
00:37:38Swings over the top of that one. And I think we can all
00:37:42be thankful that Jackie chose to pursue baseball. As great a football or basketball
00:37:46player as he might have been, it couldn't have matched his achievements on the diamond.
00:37:50Next pitch is outside.
00:37:54Righty delivers.
00:37:58The punch out there.
00:38:02And good work there as he gets a 1-2-3.
00:38:06♪♪
00:38:10♪♪
00:38:14Back here in San
00:38:18Francisco. Now the left fielder, Barry Bonds.
00:38:22The Giants in striking distance but have some work to do.
00:38:26Boog, it starts with the laid off man. Need a good at bat out of him right here.
00:38:30Kershaw back to work.
00:38:34Still fun to imagine what Jackie could have done
00:38:38as a pro football player. He led the nation in punt return yardage
00:38:42two years in a row in college at UCLA. So we know he was explosive.
00:39:04♪♪
00:39:08♪♪
00:39:12♪♪
00:39:16♪♪
00:39:20That one hammered
00:39:24center field. That's back there.
00:39:28Turning, looking, and that one is gone.
00:39:32The circle to bases is 14th of the year.
00:39:36It's 3-1.
00:39:40♪♪
00:39:44♪♪
00:39:48♪♪
00:39:52♪♪
00:39:56♪♪
00:40:00Oh, that one got in the jet stream on a line drive.
00:40:04We saw the numbers on the backs of the jerseys of the outfielders, which is usually
00:40:08bad news, and all of a sudden they're back in this ballgame.
00:40:12Willie Mays
00:40:16the next giant to hit.
00:40:20First off, bringing it just misses.
00:40:24Mays!
00:40:28♪♪
00:40:32The big lefty turns,
00:40:36kicks, deals, and now 2-0.
00:40:40To account to a guy with this much pop at the dish, you better expect him to be
00:40:44turning on something. It's going to either get hit hard to the pull side, or the fans
00:40:48better look out in the stands.
00:40:52Popped up foul territory behind the plate.
00:40:56And there's one down.
00:41:00That was a good hard fastball with some nice ride up in the zone right there.
00:41:04Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end
00:41:08just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it's a pop up
00:41:12and an easy out for the defense.
00:41:16Willie McCovey the next to hit.
00:41:26And that's in there
00:41:30for strike one. Generally second, third time through the lineup
00:41:34you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them.
00:41:38Looks like he's doing a nice job of it.
00:41:42...
00:41:54Left hand batter waits.
00:41:58And a foul ball. He stays alive.
00:42:060-2
00:42:100-2 now.
00:42:14And fouled off.
00:42:26Next offering is down low. Now one and two.
00:42:30The wide to kick the pitch.
00:42:34Now a screamer into the outfield.
00:42:38Snyder brings it in. And there's two down.
00:42:42Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it, but sometimes you hit it too hard
00:42:46and right at someone. You're looking for one of those loop hits to get a knock sometimes.
00:42:50Two outs. Base is empty.
00:42:54Now it's the D.H. Jeff Pence. 0-1.
00:42:58He grounded out in his first at bat.
00:43:02...
00:43:06In there and it's 0-1. Well he's been incredibly efficient in this one.
00:43:10First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That's well above
00:43:14league average. And that's what's allowed him to pitch well up until this point.
00:43:18Two down. Nobody on.
00:43:22Stays alive.
00:43:26...
00:43:34Way inside. Gets out of the way.
00:43:44It's a 1-2.
00:43:48And a swing and a miss. And that's that.
00:43:52When the Giants go deep, it's bye-bye baby.
00:43:56It's now a 3-1 ball game.
00:44:08We go to the top of the fifth. And now here's the Dodgers designated hitter
00:44:12Reggie Smith.
00:44:16The pitch.
00:44:22And that's a strike.
00:44:32Now 1-1.
00:44:38The pitch.
00:44:42So now 1-2.
00:44:46...
00:44:50The wind of the pitch.
00:44:54And a foul ball. He stays alive.
00:45:02The 1-2.
00:45:10And now 2-2.
00:45:15The 2-2 now.
00:45:19On the ground, right side. Oh, can't pick it up
00:45:23cleanly. And safe! Bang, bang, play.
00:45:27But speed wins on a great effort there. Just a cookie down the middle.
00:45:31I mean, those are the ones you dream about. The ones in the cage you're just hoping you get in a ball
00:45:35game. Right down the middle, not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it.
00:45:39And now they've got some speed on first. So we'll see if they try to get him into motion.
00:45:43And next for L.A., Duke Snyder.
00:45:51And the first pitch misses for ball one.
00:46:07At the belt and fires.
00:46:11That's a bullet, but it goes foul.
00:46:26Left-hand hitter waits.
00:46:30So a foul ball makes it 1-2.
00:46:34The pitch.
00:46:38To third. Dives and he can't hang on.
00:46:42And he beats it. That's a hit. Great try there.
00:46:46At the play, Sean Green.
00:46:50And the first offensive pitch.
00:46:54And he can't hang on.
00:46:58And he beats it. That's a hit. Great try there.
00:47:14At the play, Sean Green.
00:47:20And the offering is not close.
00:47:40Fly ball down the right field line. If it's fair, it's gone.
00:47:44And that is gone.
00:47:50Over the bat.
00:48:06When a guy's got a real hard fastball, you can't over swing.
00:48:10All you've got to do is get the bat head to the spot. If you do, he supplies the power.
00:48:14And you'll get to jog around the bases like he did right there.
00:48:20Here comes the manager out of the Giants dugout.
00:48:24And he will make a move to the pen.
00:48:28We'll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound.
00:48:38New arm for the Giants.
00:48:42Montee Ward. And we'll see how he performs in this situation.
00:48:46Down big.
00:48:58And here's the catcher. Roy Campanella.
00:49:02Roy Campanella.
00:49:06Swings through that one. 0-1.
00:49:16Swing and a miss.
00:49:24Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two.
00:49:28Just not able to catch up to that velocity.
00:49:40And a 0-2. And he chases that one.
00:49:44And that's the first out.
00:49:48That's a curveball that people like to describe as a hammer or Uncle Charlie.
00:49:52And you can see why. It's not a looping slow curve.
00:49:56He throws it hard and it gets plenty of bite on the end.
00:50:00Gil Hodgins steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
00:50:04Out in front.
00:50:08And foul to the left side.
00:50:12Ward. Pretty much every manager's dream coming out of the pen.
00:50:16High strikeout. Low walk. That is a recipe for success.
00:50:20Well, for a manager, when you can have that
00:50:24one special arm in the bullpen that you know is just reliable,
00:50:28tell you what, that makes his job a whole lot easier to manage a ball club.
00:50:32Next pitch is popped up. McCovey makes the grab.
00:50:36And they're two down. And as a hitter, are you thinking swing from pitch one?
00:50:40I'm trying to get comfortable. I'm trying to recognize what's he got today?
00:50:44What's he going to throw? How's he going to come at me?
00:50:48Try to get as much intel as you possibly can to give yourself a chance to succeed.
00:50:52Two outs. Base is empty. Here's the third baseman. Number 10.
00:50:56First pitch doesn't find the zone.
00:51:20Right-handed reliever.
00:51:24There's the strike.
00:51:36And the right-hander deals.
00:51:40This one popped up. Foul ground. First base side.
00:51:44McCovey makes the catch. And that'll do it.
00:51:48Big three-run shot for the Dodgers.
00:51:52And this is now a 6-1 ball game.
00:52:03We head to the bottom of the fifth. And digging in for San Francisco,
00:52:07Orlando Cepeda.
00:52:15The wind of the pitch.
00:52:19Ball one there.
00:52:25And the pitch.
00:52:29Base hit. Left center field.
00:52:40Travis Jackson getting ready to hit.
00:52:44Really good piece of hitting last time. Going to the opposite field.
00:52:49And he swings and misses.
00:52:53And it's nothing in one.
00:53:18And that one almost got him.
00:53:48And the pitch.
00:53:52Popped up right side. Robinson on the move.
00:53:56That one gets down for a hit.
00:54:00Throwback in quickly. First and second now with nobody out.
00:54:04Two consecutive base hits for these guys here. With the way defenders track down
00:54:08balls these days, I mean both from the infield and in the outfield, there really
00:54:12aren't a lot of base hits on balls hit like that. But there's always a little room
00:54:16back behind the first and second baseman to drop a long dart in there.
00:54:20And he found a way. And you can feel this crowd waking up a bit here
00:54:24as the guys are starting to make some noise with their bats.
00:54:28Stands in now and watches strike one.
00:54:46Next offering is down low.
00:55:06Ground ball left side. Could be two.
00:55:10Over to Jackie. They get one. And they get him easily at first.
00:55:14Double play.
00:55:18The batter, number eight. Second baseman, Frankie
00:55:22Fritz.
00:55:26And now Frankie, one for two.
00:55:30First pitch, not close.
00:55:50Kicks and deals.
00:55:54And that one is lifted in the air.
00:55:58Makes a nice running catch.
00:56:02And that's the inning.
00:56:16Back here at Oracle Park.
00:56:20And now here's a speed threat. Outfielder, Zach Wee.
00:56:24I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense
00:56:28and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on
00:56:32that's going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about.
00:56:36The right hander back to work. Pitch misses there. And it's
00:56:401-0.
00:56:44And that's in for a strike.
00:56:56And a pitch.
00:57:00And it is 2-1.
00:57:14And a swing and a miss.
00:57:36Right hander kicks, deals.
00:57:40Fritz stays alive.
00:57:44He was a little out front but did a good job keeping the hands back long enough to foul that pitch off.
00:57:52Comes to 2-2.
00:57:56And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes.
00:58:00That's a pretty nasty pitch right there. I'd call it a power curveball in the 80s.
00:58:04It's got so much spin on it and you really don't have a lot of time to sit back
00:58:08and watch what it's going to do before you have to commit. It was a good one for the swing and strikeout.
00:58:12And up next for Los Angeles,
00:58:16Peewee Reese. He's turned into one of the best short stops in the game.
00:58:24And first offering is fouled off.
00:58:38And a righty deals.
00:58:42And it's even up.
00:59:08So now 1-2 to Reese.
00:59:12Bounced up the middle.
00:59:16On to McCovey. Two quick outs to open the top of the sixth.
00:59:20First of all, that's just a nice job to even get to that ball.
00:59:24And then even more impressive was the throw. Off balance.
00:59:28Had to try to in the air get his shoulders turned and make a strong throw.
00:59:32Does show off the strength of the arm. We're usually used to seeing that kind of arm strength from the shortstop.
00:59:38And he drops it down the third baseline.
00:59:42And he beats it. He's safe.
00:59:50He was racing down the line
00:59:54and probably didn't assume he was going to be safe until his foot hit the bag
00:59:58and looked up for the umpire. Nice bunt and great hustle to get himself a knock.
01:00:02Reggie Smith steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
01:00:06Ward checks the runner.
01:00:10Robinson dives back in safely.
01:00:14Reggie Smith steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
01:00:18Ward checks the runner. Robinson
01:00:22dives back in safely.
01:00:34And there's something you don't see very much
01:00:38in today's game. The pitch out.
01:00:44Two outs.
01:00:52Two outs.
01:00:56And another ball.
01:01:00He's really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity.
01:01:04Try to get a rollover. Something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield.
01:01:14The 2-0
01:01:18is in for a strike.
01:01:30The pitch.
01:01:44And that's through there for a strike.
01:01:483-2. Two out. Runner on first.
01:01:52A lot of movement in the infield. Hitter's got to stay focused on the pitch.
01:02:043-2 down.
01:02:08Swag and a miss. The velocity blasted it right past him.
01:02:122-3-4. Two up in the home half of the 6.
01:02:16It's the Dodgers 6 and the Giants 1.
01:02:24Welcome back. We go bottom 6.
01:02:28And now here is Roger Conner.
01:02:32It's interesting. He plays kind of a power spot defensively,
01:02:36but runs pretty well. So when you're looking at that position,
01:02:40you're not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does.
01:02:52On the ground to first. And base hit.
01:02:56And a board on the leadoff single.
01:03:00Well, as hot hitting continues, he's been getting great results lately.
01:03:04Just a simple ground ball the other way. They had eyes on it, man.
01:03:08That's all you need to do. Just let the ball travel. Put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole.
01:03:12And at first, Barry Bonds.
01:03:20That one's in there. 0-1.
01:03:24And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed,
01:03:28it makes the whole team that much better.
01:03:38Line drive. Base hit.
01:03:46Lead runner holds up.
01:03:50They're at first and second with nobody out.
01:03:54Back-to-back singles. Off the bat, that one registered at 105 miles per hour, man.
01:03:58That is smoking. And these days you hear it all the time, but the numbers just don't lie.
01:04:02If you can drive a ball like that, more often than not, you're picking up a knock.
01:04:06There's a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ballgame.
01:04:22Maze. The next to hit takes ball one.
01:04:26If you're on the mound right now, you know you have to retire this hitter.
01:04:30If he gets on base, it could open up the floodgates for this offense to score some runs.
01:04:36Swing, and that ball smashed on a line.
01:04:40Tracks it down for the out.
01:04:44And there's one down.
01:04:48The first baseman, number 44, Willie.
01:04:52Willie McCovey, the next Giant to hit.
01:05:06First offering misses badly for ball one.
01:05:18And he deals.
01:05:22Bounding ball here, rolls foul.
01:05:26Runners at first and second with one gone.
01:05:36Ground ball right side.
01:05:40Could be two. Hodgins over to second.
01:05:44Back to first, double play. And that's it for the inning.
01:05:48We're through six-fold. It's the Dodgers six and the Giants one.
01:06:00Back here at the ballpark, we go to the top of the seventh.
01:06:04Leading off, Duke Snyder.
01:06:08With this kind of lead, he can swing freely. Try to hit the ball out of the park.
01:06:12Do what he loves to do.
01:06:16The pitch. That one misses.
01:06:20One and O. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen.
01:06:24Mickey Welch getting ready to go.
01:06:34Swings and misses.
01:06:38And it's one and one.
01:06:56And the pitch.
01:07:00That's off the mark. And it's two and one.
01:07:10Here comes the pitch.
01:07:14Out to short. Jackson picks it up. Fires over to first.
01:07:18That's the first out at the top of the seventh.
01:07:22The right fielder, number 15,
01:07:26Sean Green.
01:07:30And now, Sean Green. This guy has turned into a beast.
01:07:44First offering. Misses the mark.
01:07:52And now, two and nothing.
01:07:56And now, two and nothing.
01:08:00As that one missed below the knees.
01:08:08Two-oh.
01:08:12Ball inside.
01:08:28And there's the strike.
01:08:32Clearly taking all the way there in that three-oh count. It was a cookie right down the middle.
01:08:36The three-one.
01:08:40Late that time, and it's strike two.
01:08:52Downstairs, and it misses. Ball four.
01:08:56Oh, you know this guy wants to swing it, but he's showing some good patience in this one.
01:09:00It's the second time he's taken ball four.
01:09:04Troy Campanella will hit next.
01:09:08Known for his rocket arm behind the plate.
01:09:20First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
01:09:24Some guys are just more confident if they can track that first pitch out of the hand of the pitcher.
01:09:28They don't care if they fall behind 0-1.
01:09:34And now, the count is even.
01:09:46And here it comes.
01:09:50There's the strike.
01:09:54That big curve inside is a pitch that can buckle you a little bit.
01:09:58Looks like a fastball out of hand, and then just drops over that inside part of the plate.
01:10:04And it's a strike.
01:10:28Kicks and fires.
01:10:32Green.
01:10:36Around third. Oh, the throw is wild. One run is in.
01:10:44Absolutely
01:10:48hammered that baseball very loud coming off the bat.
01:10:52107 was the exit velocity, and at that speed, it's going to be a great result
01:10:56more often than not.
01:11:02Hill Hodgins
01:11:06steps to the plate for the Dodgers. A guy who makes an impact
01:11:10not just at the plate, but also in the field.
01:11:14And the first offering is not close.
01:11:24One away with a runner at third.
01:11:33And there's the strike.
01:11:37Man, he was really tardy on that fastball. Great job of setting him up
01:11:41by throwing the curveball, add some velocity to it on the next pitch, can't catch up.
01:11:49Next offering is in for a strike.
01:12:03Righty
01:12:07delivers, and down on strikes.
01:12:11Two gone now.
01:12:15Number 10 steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
01:12:19And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here.
01:12:24Oh, that got him on the mound.
01:12:28Not in time. Great effort, but it's an infield hit.
01:12:38Up next for the Dodgers, the left fielder,
01:12:42Zach Weitz.
01:12:46Zach Weitz.
01:12:56So a man aboard, and at the plate for the Dodgers,
01:13:00Zach Weitz. A strikeout and a walk.
01:13:04First pitch, just misses.
01:13:17That's through there for a strike.
01:13:36Oh, now this one gets away at the plate.
01:13:40And the runner stays where he is.
01:13:44Pitch misses inside.
01:13:48Three and one.
01:14:08Swing and a miss. Blew it by him at 99.
01:14:13Back to work.
01:14:17Three-two now.
01:14:21The right-hander gives up the two-out walk.
01:14:25Boog, do you think you could draw a walk in the bigs if we gave you enough at bats?
01:14:29Boog, that's a good question.
01:14:33I think that if they do a walk in the bigs,
01:14:37they're going to be able to get the ball.
01:14:41I think that if they gave the pitcher a full scouting report on me,
01:14:45yes, I think I could draw a walk.
01:14:49They hand the ball over to a new arm, Amos Russo.
01:14:53Hasn't pitched in a while. He's had the last five days off.
01:14:57Peewee Reese steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
01:15:01Not the easiest thing. When you're talking about a guy that's, you know,
01:15:05perhaps is going to be in the rotation, maybe a long relief guy to not start an inning,
01:15:09to come into an inning with pressure on it and try to get yourself comfortable.
01:15:13And first offering is fouled off.
01:15:23At the belt and fires. Just missed.
01:15:27The 1-1.
01:15:31Good spot for the hitter.
01:15:35Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on.
01:15:39Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch.
01:15:47Next one misses. And now 3-1.
01:15:51Two on, two outs.
01:15:55And it's ball four. He missed down low.
01:15:59Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there.
01:16:03Pretty much gifted in first base with a quick free pass.
01:16:07So the lineup for the Dodgers is a little bit different.
01:16:11They're going to be a little bit more aggressive.
01:16:15They're going to be a little bit more aggressive.
01:16:19So the lineup flips over. Now it's the second baseman, Jackie Robinson.
01:16:23And Boog, I'd say he's due.
01:16:31First pitch, not close.
01:16:35Base is loaded. Two down.
01:16:43Sliced hard but fouled.
01:16:47Next pitch, off the plate.
01:16:51Two and one.
01:16:55Boog, in situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate.
01:16:59Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down.
01:17:03The pitch.
01:17:07Brings it in.
01:17:11And it's in.
01:17:15And it's in.
01:17:19And it's in.
01:17:23And it's in.
01:17:27And it's in.
01:17:31Brings it in for the third out.
01:17:35Midway in inning number seven.
01:17:39And it's time to stretch. It's the Dodgers eight and the Giants one.
01:17:49Set for the last half of the seventh.
01:17:53And now the DH, Jeff Kent.
01:17:57The designated hitter. The pitch.
01:18:01They've got a potent lineup. And when you think about teams capable
01:18:05of rallying from this kind of deficit, they're right at the top of the list.
01:18:17Ripped on the ground a second. And it finds its way
01:18:21through for a hit. Off to a good start with a leadoff dot.
01:18:25Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there.
01:18:29He wasn't able to elevate it, but he put a great swing on it. Right on time.
01:18:33Good, balanced approach. And just blasted it through the infield.
01:18:37Man at first. And up next for San Francisco,
01:18:41Orlando Cepeda.
01:18:45Next pitch downstairs. Ball one.
01:18:55And now the lefty.
01:18:59And a foul ball.
01:19:19Ripped on a line.
01:19:23Green makes the catch. And there's one down.
01:19:27It was all over that fastball right there. Tell you what, if he gets under it
01:19:31just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that's way back.
01:19:41And up next for the Giants, Travis Jackson.
01:19:53And that's in there for strike one.
01:20:09And the pitch.
01:20:13That one missed.
01:20:23That's down and in.
01:20:53All right, Jackson.
01:20:57And the pitch.
01:21:01And now the count filled up three and two.
01:21:17The pitch.
01:21:21Fouled off again. And it remains three and two.
01:21:37Kicked San Dios. Swing and a miss.
01:21:41And he got him. So he's gotten deep into this game.
01:21:45And at least so far, not showing a ton of signs of fatigue.
01:21:51Now it's the Giants catcher number 28.
01:22:07In the air, out towards right center.
01:22:11Green drifts towards it. Puts the squeeze on it.
01:22:15And the inning is over. One left for San Francisco.
01:22:19And that's the end of this one-ball game.
01:22:29Ready to begin the eighth. And now here's the Dodgers designated hitter.
01:22:33Reggie Smith. The MO for him is contact.
01:22:37The guy who's going to deliver average. Not a ton of power.
01:22:41He's looking to hit a line drive somewhere. That's why it's a team. And when you look at a lineup,
01:22:45it's great. Swing and this one's blasted. It's got a chance.
01:22:49Pulls it in on the warning track.
01:22:53He was all over that first pitch fastball.
01:22:57Just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit.
01:23:01And next for L.A., Duke Snyder. One for three.
01:23:05On the ground, right side.
01:23:09And foul ball.
01:23:21Next offering is in for a strike.
01:23:25Signs of movement in the Giants' bullpen. Madison Bumgarner.
01:23:29The left-handed reliever appears to be getting loose.
01:23:33Slice the other way. That's a base hit.
01:23:37So they get a man aboard with a one-out single.
01:23:41All over that one right there.
01:23:45Against good pitchers, you've got to take advantage of the mistakes.
01:23:49That was right in his wheelhouse, and he didn't miss a stitch.
01:23:53Now it's the Dodger cleanup hitter, Sean Green.
01:23:57And first offering is fouled off.
01:24:09And the Dodgers take the lead in the second half.
01:24:13And the Dodgers take the lead in the second half.
01:24:17And the Dodgers take the lead in the second half.
01:24:21And the Dodgers take the lead in the second half.
01:24:37And that one just missed off the outside edge.
01:24:45And the right-hander deals.
01:24:49And he almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit.
01:25:03Base knock, center field. They get it in quickly.
01:25:07So first and second, now one out. Sheesh.
01:25:11Singy, that was a laser shot. And a good thing we have stack cast to give us the details.
01:25:15Yeah, get out of the way on that one. That ball flew out of the box at 112 miles per hour.
01:25:21You talk about generating a ton of power in that swing.
01:25:25He did it with quick hands, good lower half, and just unloaded on that ball.
01:25:29And here is Roy Campanella.
01:25:33First pitch, and he just misses.
01:25:45Slapped foul.
01:26:01Here's a 1-1.
01:26:05And there's a foul ball.
01:26:15Here's a 1-2.
01:26:19A rope into right, and that's a base hit.
01:26:23Coming around third is Duke. He will score. It's 9-1.
01:26:27A little more back spin on that instead of the top spin.
01:26:31And he's jogging around the bases rather than pulling up at second.
01:26:35Hodges.
01:26:39And now the first baseman,
01:26:43Gil Hodges.
01:26:47That hits the dirt.
01:26:51Ball one. Well, he's just given up three straight hits, and now
01:26:55behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call
01:26:59a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit.
01:27:03Right-handed reliever. That's a strike.
01:27:07And now it's even 1-1. Well, triple digits on the gun. I know
01:27:11there are more guys that can reach that now than in the past, but it's still
01:27:15impressive to watch.
01:27:27And down on strikes he goes.
01:27:31And there are two outs. You know, that's got to be very frustrating for this
01:27:35guy. He knows the strike zone extremely well, and you know what? Good hitters
01:27:39are not going to compromise. He'll take that punch out, but ultimately
01:27:43stick with his plan and have more success than anything else.
01:27:47And up next for Los Angeles, number 10.
01:27:51And he swings and misses at the initial offering.
01:28:01Two outs, two in scoring position.
01:28:09And that one gets away at the plate. Nothing
01:28:13happening as the count evens at one.
01:28:171-1 now. And a breaking
01:28:21ball drops in for a strike. If he doesn't get a knock right here, that pitch
01:28:25he just took is going to eat at him for a while. You might not see another pitch
01:28:29like that from a top-level guy like this.
01:28:33Two outs.
01:28:37On the ground to third. And it gets by him.
01:28:45Man, he just absolutely turned on that one.
01:28:49Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying in his mechanics.
01:28:59Now on the bump, Madison Bumgarner. He comes
01:29:03in with his team trailing by a bunch, so he'll try to keep it where it is.
01:29:19Zach Weed steps to the plate for the Dodgers. This guy is one of the
01:29:23best athletes in the sport.
01:29:27In there and it's 0-1.
01:29:47And a foul ball left side.
01:29:570-2 now.
01:30:01That one blasted deep to right. Way back there.
01:30:05And it one-ups the wall.
01:30:09Lead runner gets the stop sign at third. It's a two-out double.
01:30:13Second and third now. Back-to-back base hits. He hit that ball
01:30:17really well. The deep right field right there. Got a pitch to drive and just
01:30:21stayed through it nicely. Didn't quite have the trajectory to clear the fence, but
01:30:25you're always happy with an extra base hit.
01:30:29Peewee Reese steps to the plate for the Dodgers.
01:30:33Turned on, but foul wide of third.
01:30:49And a pitch.
01:30:53Pops in there. Back to Ordon with the breaking ball. Just got the corner.
01:30:57There's nothing you can really do with that.
01:31:01Here's the 0-2. Popped up. Jackson
01:31:05settles under this one. Brings it in. And that is that.
01:31:09Last half of the eighth coming up.
01:31:13It's the Dodgers 11 and the Giants 1.
01:31:23And welcome back. Here's a speed threat.
01:31:27Frankie Frisch leading up for the Giants.
01:31:31The second baseman, Frankie Frisch.
01:31:35Kershaw back to work.
01:31:39And takes low for ball one. Activity in the bullpen
01:31:43for the Dodgers. Kenley Jansen preparing to come on if needed.
01:31:53The 1-2.
01:31:57The 1-2.
01:32:21The 1-2.
01:32:25Misses off the outside edge.
01:32:29The 1-2.
01:32:33The 1-2.
01:32:532-2 now.
01:32:57On the ground to the left.
01:33:01Now batting, third baseman,
01:33:05Roger Conner.
01:33:09And digging in for San Francisco, Roger Conner.
01:33:13He's got the power, but great contact skills. One of the best
01:33:17contact hitters in the game.
01:33:21First pitch doesn't find the zone.
01:33:25And that misses off the outside edge.
01:33:39The 2-0 is in for a strike.
01:33:43He's just about to throw his 100th pitch. Man, he's got a chance to get through this eighth inning
01:33:47if he can get two more quick outs.
01:33:51Next offering is downstairs. A rare three-ball count here.
01:33:55He's been throwing strikes all day. Gotta be ready to hit if you're in the box.
01:34:05The big lefty turns, kicks, deals.
01:34:093-2 now. Well, you can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch.
01:34:13Guy hasn't thrown it very much. You gotta focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time.
01:34:17And a swing and a line drive at a right field.
01:34:21And that's a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away.
01:34:25Another multi-hit game for him. He's been really hot lately.
01:34:29Anytime you rip a line drive the other way, you feel really good about what you did at the plate.
01:34:33You trusted your hands, you let the ball travel, and you took the barrel straight to it.
01:34:37That's great work right there.
01:34:41Here comes the skipper, and we're going to see a pitching change in this spot.
01:34:45The ball will depart, and as he heads for the dugout, we'll take a quick break.
01:34:49New arm on the mound when we get back.
01:34:53Number 54 on the pitch here.
01:34:57And a healthy-sized lead for him to go to work with.
01:35:01Number 54.
01:35:13Barry Bonds, the next Giant to hit.
01:35:21And the first pitch misses for ball one.
01:35:31And that skips into dirt.
01:35:35To account, you really don't want to give in here.
01:35:39You've got to work the edges. Really execute a pitch.
01:35:43Hopefully you can get back into this count.
01:35:47Next offering misses.
01:35:51Ball three. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate.
01:35:55Well, it can be a little tough coming from the bullpen mound to this mound,
01:35:59but you've got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn't.
01:36:03We'll see how this at-bat turns out.
01:36:07Ground ball. Could be two. Robinson. Toss to second.
01:36:11Throw to first, but he beat it.
01:36:15The center fielder, number 24, Willie Mays.
01:36:19Man at first. Now the Giant's forehitter,
01:36:23Willie Mays. Great speed and great power.
01:36:27A great athlete, quite simply.
01:36:35First offering misses badly for ball one.
01:36:39He's like Mike Trout. You figure whatever you put in his hand, whether it's a bat, whether it's a golf club, whether it's a basketball,
01:36:43he can do it and get it done. And a rare talent.
01:36:47So much fun to watch.
01:36:51And now it's even up.
01:36:57Right hander
01:37:01kicks, deals.
01:37:09Now one
01:37:13fouled off, two and two.
01:37:17Swing and a miss.
01:37:21Struck him out.
01:37:25And that'll do it.
01:37:29So the Giants leave one. They trail by double digits.
01:37:3311-1.
01:37:41Back here in San Francisco. We go to the ninth.
01:37:45Now at the plate, Jackie Robinson.
01:37:53A wide kick to pitch.
01:37:57There's a strike. There it was. Oh, oh, here it is. Hit it.
01:38:01Gets a take. Gets ahead in the count.
01:38:09Next offering is in for a strike.
01:38:13Well, he didn't like those first two pitches. Now in an 0-2 hole, he's going to have to battle,
01:38:17hope he gets a mistake. One guy that was really great, once the count got to two
01:38:21strikes, Miguel Cabrera. Line drive, caught.
01:38:29The batter, number eight, designated hitter, Reggie
01:38:33Smith. And at the plate for the Dodgers,
01:38:37Reggie Smith. A switch hitter batting right.
01:38:43In there.
01:38:47In there for strike one.
01:38:55The wind and the pitch.
01:38:59And a foul ball.
01:39:03Next pitch misses.
01:39:07One and two to count.
01:39:11Kicks and fires.
01:39:15Swings through that one. It's a strikeout.
01:39:19That's out number two.
01:39:23Stepping in, the long ball threat, Duke
01:39:27Snyder.
01:39:31Duke Snyder.
01:39:39First pitch, and that's in for a strike.
01:39:43Left-hand batter waits.
01:39:47That one ripped.
01:39:51Makes a nice grab and a full sprint. And that'll
01:39:55do it. Five, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth.
01:39:59It's the Dodgers 11 and the Giants 1.
01:40:05Here comes the closer here in the ninth, Eric Gagne.
01:40:09And he'll try to keep this big lead right where it is.
01:40:21Back here at Oracle Park, so bottom of the ninth.
01:40:25And here's the first baseman, Willie McCovey.
01:40:29The first baseman, Willie McCovey.
01:40:33And a pinch.
01:40:37And ball one. Clearly didn't come out of his hand the right way. Left that curveball
01:40:41way up.
01:40:45Righty to the plate.
01:40:49Foul ball there.
01:41:01Left-hand hitter waits.
01:41:05And a count one and two.
01:41:09Here comes a pinch.
01:41:13Ball now. This one is blasted to right.
01:41:17Forget it. Way back there and gone.
01:41:39A breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics.
01:42:07There's no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically.
01:42:11He deserves that home run.
01:42:15Jeff Kent digs in now for the fourth time tonight.
01:42:19Now batting, the designated hitter, Jeff Kent.
01:42:23And that's in there for strike one.
01:42:27Nobody on, nobody out.
01:42:31Here at the last half of inning number nine.
01:42:35Next pitch inside.
01:42:39And it's a ball to strike.
01:42:43And here comes.
01:42:47In the air, right side. Green drifts towards it.
01:42:51And makes the grab.
01:42:55And there's one away.
01:42:59The right fielder, number 30.
01:43:03Orlando Cepeda.
01:43:07And up next for San Francisco, Orlando Cepeda.
01:43:11First offering. Misses the mark.
01:43:33And that's outside.
01:43:35Giving up that home run earlier, just doesn't seem like he wants to challenge him.
01:43:512-0.
01:43:53And that's in for a strike.
01:43:55In today's game, not that many fastball counts.
01:43:57But hitters still in the back of their minds, they're looking for one.
01:44:02Excellent pitch selection to go with.
01:44:06And he deals.
01:44:08Fouls one off, two and two.
01:44:20And the righty deals.
01:44:22Swings and misses.
01:44:24That's the second out.
01:44:30And up next for the Giants, Travis Jackson.
01:44:42Pitch misses inside.
01:44:44And that's ball one.
01:44:51Kicks and deals.
01:44:53Swing and a miss.
01:44:54That's strike one.
01:45:00Righty delivers.
01:45:02Misses off the play.
01:45:04Two balls and a strike.
01:45:10The pitch.
01:45:12Breaks his bat, pops it up.
01:45:14Slow to get out of the box.
01:45:16And he's tagged for the out.
01:45:18Well, when you win by nine runs, you have plenty of insurance runs.
01:45:22It's a huge confidence boost when you can put that many runs up on the board.
01:45:26And I'll tell you what, the next game starter is saying,
01:45:29hey, I hope you guys save some runs for me.
01:45:31I want to get a win as well.
01:45:3311-2 the final tally.
01:45:35Dave Roberts and company celebrate in the dugout.
01:45:38For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show,
01:45:42I'm John Schambe saying so long.
01:46:12Here now is our final line score tonight.
01:46:33First for the victorious Dodgers, 11 runs on 14 hits, no errors.
01:46:38They left 10.
