Transcript
00:00Tamal, wow, what a performance. It couldn't have gone any better, could it, tonight?
00:05Yeah, Chaffer's obviously nice to win the toss and get out there first of all.
00:09Oli and Brad were outstanding with the new ball.
00:12He set the tone really well, which we thought he would do a little bit.
00:15It was a wicket that hadn't been used all year, so he saved it for today.
00:19It was, as I say, a nice toss to win.
00:21Then, yeah, we were brilliant all the way through.
00:23I think we spoke about keeping the stumps in play all the way through.
00:26Yeah, credit to the boys, credit to the coaching staff as well,
00:29who brought in T20 for the last couple of seasons.
00:31We made a big effort to identify where we needed to be better.
00:35It's been a long journey from the winter.
00:37A lot of the boys have put in a lot of hard work,
00:39and then obviously then implementing it throughout the blast.
00:42Yeah, very, very proud of where we got to,
00:44but as I say, we're not done yet. Hopefully two more games to go.
00:47What sort of a difference does it make to the team?
00:49It lifts the crowd when you get a wicket with the first ball of the match.
00:52Yeah, huge. It sets the tone, doesn't it?
00:54Especially Salty, obviously a very good player,
00:56and coming back to his former club, I'm sure he would have been up for it.
01:00So, yeah, to see the stumps lighting up was a great feeling,
01:03but I'm always backing Ollie with the new ball.
01:06He's been brilliant all throughout the tournament.
01:08He's been moving it both ways, and yeah, that was a nice one.
01:12And also, not just that, but also a pretty special run out as well.
01:15That's the second one he's done in this competition.
01:17Yeah, no, Fielder of the Year, you probably wouldn't have him down for.
01:20People maybe give him some slack for what condition he's in,
01:22but he's moving, looks like he's moving just fine to me.
01:25But yeah, that was a huge moment, because whilst Libby was in,
01:27he was obviously striking it really well,
01:29and he was obviously trying to drag them up to a total which they could try and defend.
01:32So, yeah, obviously we were struggling to get him out with the ball,
01:35but yeah, he did brilliantly to run him out.
01:38Three years since we've seen Joffre playing down here.
01:40How much of a boost was it to have him back in the side tonight?
01:43Yeah, well, I've been trying to get him to play for the whole second half of the group stage,
01:46and BCB wouldn't allow it, so it was nice to finally get him back.
01:50It's great for the crowd, as you say.
01:51It's been a few years since he has been here,
01:53and even if it's only for one game, it shows what a huge difference it is.
01:56As a captain, it made my life a lot easier,
01:58knowing that I've got him up my sleeve and I can bring him on to try and attack.
02:01And yeah, it was great, and hopefully we'll see him again next year.
02:05Yeah, and it's a shame, but the schedule means that he probably won't be able to play at Finals Day.
02:09Yeah, as far as I'm aware, no England players will be available,
02:11which is pretty stupid to know, so it is what it is.
02:15It'll be the same for all the teams.
02:16Obviously, no England players will be there from any side,
02:18but it's a real shame for us, obviously, to lose a player like Joffre.
02:23But obviously, whoever comes in for him will have big boots to fill.
02:26Let's talk about some of the younger players as well.
02:28James Coles, two for nine today in made runs as well.
02:31How's the development this side around some of these younger players as well, Tamal?
02:35Yeah, Coles, he was one that I was keen from day one.
02:37He was going to be my number one spinner this year,
02:40and the coaching staff in all forms of cricket are really backing him with the bat as well.
02:43He's extremely talented.
02:44He's only 20 years old, I think.
02:46It's great for him to get a gig in the 100 as well,
02:48and I know he learned a lot with us over at Southern Braves.
02:51He's a player of huge potential.
02:53He's very ambitious.
02:54He's not someone that shies away.
02:56I'm very happy with how he's done.
02:58He's made my life really easy all throughout the campaign,
03:01bowling his spin and then batting in the top five as well.
03:04So Coles, Tom Clark, we've got a lot of talented youngsters
03:07all throughout the club in all formats of the game.
03:10You were saying this has been a long time in the planning
03:12because you were saying during the winter you spoke to every player individually
03:16about what their role might be in the side and what they're looking ahead to this competition.
03:19Yeah, I tried.
03:20So again, once myself and the coaching staff and the analysts,
03:23the analysts spout a load of numbers and stats,
03:25the kind of areas where we needed to be better.
03:27And it was pretty clear there were some glaring areas
03:29that we were really poor at in the last few years of T20,
03:31particularly with the bat.
03:32So that was something that we worked on really hard.
03:34And then, yeah, once I kind of officially became captain in the new year,
03:37I made a point of calling each player individually,
03:40even the players that haven't been part of the squad,
03:42just to get a feel for where they thought they were at with their games,
03:46where I thought their games were at.
03:48And just to chat about T20 cricket, really.
03:51And I take T20 cricket very seriously because it's all I do.
03:55Whereas I felt maybe as a club,
03:57there were players that obviously maybe didn't quite take it as seriously,
04:00which is hard when guys are playing all formats of the game.
04:03But I wanted us to take the game really seriously.
04:06I'm 32 now, I'm not going to be playing forever.
04:08I want to win as many games I can
04:10and nothing would mean more to me than winning for Sussex.
04:12So I'm not just looking to waste my last few years playing here
04:15and maybe doing OK personally, but not being part of a successful team.
04:18So I wanted to try and raise the standards a little bit.
04:21And the boys have been really responsive
04:23and we've played some really good cricket.
04:25I think we've scored over 207 times, I think, in the group stage.
04:30So we're playing positive cricket, we're playing entertaining cricket.
04:33We've been much better here.
04:34We were poor here for the last few years.
04:35Our record here has really improved.
04:37So I'm really proud of everything that the coaching staff
04:39and the players have done to get this far.
04:42First of all, you want to get out of the group.
04:44We did that and obviously to win the knockout game
04:46against a very experienced and very talented Lancs side
04:48was obviously really pleasing as well.
04:50So we'll wait to see who we'll play at Edgbaston next Saturday.
04:53But look, we'll turn up expecting to win.
04:56That's the attitude now that the team have.
04:59And finally, you'll clearly love him being captain tomorrow.
05:01Yeah, I've enjoyed it.
05:03I've never done it in any cricket before until this year,
05:06which I've never even captained a club game before.
05:09But I've loved it and I've always been a senior player
05:12and I like to think I think about the game a lot
05:14and I don't just stand at fine leg and look at the sky
05:16and twiddle my thumbs.
05:17So again, once I knew I was going to be captain,
05:20I spent the winter playing in overseas leagues
05:22kind of with a captain's mindset
05:24and trying to put myself in situations
05:26that I was going to find myself in.
05:28Yeah, but the one thing I've learned is just to trust your gut.
05:30I think there was a couple of times maybe
05:32you get a little bit defensive with fields or bowling changes
05:35and it comes back to haunt you.
05:37So yeah, I've been as aggressive as I can be.
05:40Yeah, I'm loving it.
05:41And I've really enjoyed working with Fabi and the coaching staff.
05:45So yeah, look, well done tonight.
