In Tasmania’s north, heavy rain and winds have seen extensive damage to power networks and some damage to property. The SES responded to hundreds of calls at the weekend and tens of thousands remain without power.

00:00It's just been crazy overnight.
00:04So we stayed in Launceston, we could just hear what sounded like, it sounded cyclonic.
00:08The wind was insane, the rain was hitting the windows and we got up this morning to
00:13sort of see the aftermath and you know, as we're sort of driving through the suburbs
00:17you can see sort of things scattered along the ground, there are broken trees everywhere.
00:22We just spoke to a man, a tree had fallen on his house, luckily it sort of just dented
00:27the roof but you know, it's ripped up the pavement, smashed the fence and he's not the
00:31only one.
00:32We were speaking to people earlier who a tree had fallen across sort of like two neighbours
00:35and was blocking cars in and completely written off someone's car.
00:39We've seen sort of power lines strewn across the roads in parts and it's sort of, I guess
00:44we're only seeing obviously a snapshot of what's going on in the north and it really
00:48explains why you're seeing sort of these massive scale power outages because as you know it's
00:52probably of the 38,000 I believe it was last time I heard, 23,000 of those power outages
00:58were in the north.
00:59We've obviously got Telstra services down, some landlines down, you know but people are
01:05going about their day if they can but there are certainly a lot of people sort of sitting
01:09around going, oh I need this tree cut down that's actually sort of you know, lying on
01:14my property right now but I don't know when the SES will have time to get to me.
