Rain and thunderstorms were in the forecast for all Australian capitals today except Adelaide and Perth. Warnings are in place for parts of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania with authorities telling people to prepare for potential flash flooding.

00:00 Nearly every single town actually across South East Australia has picked up some form of

00:08 So let's start with the totals that we picked up to 9 o'clock this morning.
00:12 Some good falls up to 50mm in the north west corner of Tasmania.
00:15 Most of western Victoria saw over 20mm of rain.
00:18 This is up to 9am.
00:19 You can see pockets of heavy rain through western New South Wales.
00:22 Wenarang in the north west, 48mm.
00:25 That was their heaviest rain in two years.
00:26 And heavier rain last night around the north coast of New South Wales, 166mm at Mawilumba
00:33 was their heaviest rain in two years also.
00:36 Now this just continues the very wet summer.
00:38 Here are the totals so far this January.
00:40 Now that blue shows over 100mm, so well over 100 for parts of central Victoria, pockets
00:45 of inland New South Wales and also hundreds around the north coast of New South Wales.
00:49 We've got an example of how wet it's been compared to normal.
00:53 Broken Hill, 133mm, that's already the wettest January since 1974, Lorna.

01:01 I've been looking at what Sydney's doing.
01:03 I've texted my son to tell him to get the washing in.
01:05 Where's heaviest right now?
01:07 Yeah, that rain's just hit Sydney actually in the last half an hour or so.
01:10 So we'll have a look at the radar and the totals since 9am.
01:14 So a lot of towns through the central west have already picked up about 20mm since 9am.
01:18 You can see that band of storms, it's moving towards the east, so it's just spreading through
01:21 Sydney at the moment.
01:22 We've also had some good falls since 9am through parts of Victoria.
01:26 Now the heaviest falls are along this band at the moment, this band of thunderstorms
01:30 that extends from the north west of New South Wales down to the central east.
01:34 Tasmania, also heavy rain today.
01:36 You can see we've had over 10mm in Hobart and Launceston, they needed some rain, 29mm
01:41 since 9am.
01:42 For Tasmania, it just looks like the heaviest rain is starting to move off the east coast.
01:46 We do have a warning though for now still for flash flooding, but I think that'll be
01:48 cancelled soon for Tasmania.
01:50 Another warning for East Gippsland for severe storms, flash flooding.
01:53 Severe weather warning, flash flooding right now around the Alpine area of New South Wales.
01:57 But this is probably the area where we will see the worst weather the next couple of hours.
02:00 There's a warning from the north west down to the central east, including the Blue Mountains
02:04 for heavy rain and flash flooding.
02:06 And just looking at the forecast rain over the next few hours, we can see that band is
02:10 moving east.
02:11 Now you notice they're easing through Victoria and Tasmania, but it will be the eastern part
02:14 of New South Wales up to the northern ranges where we'll probably have the worst rain as
02:19 we move into this evening.
02:21 It's quite widespread isn't it?
02:22 How does it evolve over the next day or so?
02:25 Yeah, let's take a look at the forecast then as we move into tomorrow.
02:29 So we'll continue to see the main band moving east off the coast overnight.
02:33 However, a separate weather system will bring showers and even the odd storm again to Tasmania
02:38 tomorrow.
02:39 You'd see there's not much for Victoria or southern or central New South Wales, but the
02:43 most severe weather for tomorrow will be northeast New South Wales and then across the border,
02:47 southern Queensland.
02:49 That's where we're expecting severe storms tomorrow.
02:51 Definitely the chance of flash flooding, but pockets of damaging wind gusts and perhaps
02:55 even some hail will also develop into the afternoon, Lorna.

03:00 Well, it's been warm this summer.
03:02 There's no doubt about that.
03:03 Temperatures actually have been above average across most of Australia this summer.
03:07 But with those warm temperatures, we've also had moisture, high humidity, and that's why
