00:00In Mark chapter 7, verse number 24, the Bible says,
00:04And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon,
00:09and entered into a house, and would have no man know it, but he could not be hid.
00:16For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet.
00:24The woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by nation, and she besought him that he would
00:31cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be
00:38filled, for it is not meant to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dog.
00:45And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord, send the dogs under the table,
00:49into the children's crumbs. And he said unto her, For this saying,
00:54Go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter. And when she was come to her house,
00:59she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.
01:06The title of my message this morning is Faith in the Crumbs That Fall from the Master's Table.
01:14Faith in the Crumbs That Fall from the Master's Table.
01:17Let's have a word of prayer and we'll get right into the message.
01:21Father in heaven, we do thank you this morning for the privilege of being able to come to church
01:25and be able to come together and worship. We thank you for the worship part of the service
01:30this morning. Now we pray for the preaching. I pray, God, that the Holy Spirit would have
01:35full control this morning, and God, that you would just help us to receive what you would
01:40have for us today. I pray, Lord, that you would strengthen our faith, you'd increase our faith,
01:45that you'd help us to be more bold and vigilant about telling people about Jesus.
01:51And I pray now that you bless this time of preaching, for it's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
01:58Faith in the Crumbs That Fall from the Master's Table.
02:03As we've already seen in our series concerning faith, we understand this morning that according
02:09to Hebrews chapter 11 and verse number 6, that without faith it is impossible to please God.
02:17As I've been preaching on for the last few weeks, you cannot please God without faith.
02:23As a matter of fact, it is faith that brings us to God. It is faith that causes us to call upon
02:30God. It is faith that saves us this morning from going to a place called hell. And it is also
02:39faith this morning that causes a man or a woman to live for Jesus Christ. All of those things
02:47this morning are done by faith. But faith this morning will always cause a person to seek God.
02:58In Mark chapter number 7 this morning, we find a very unique story concerning the faith of a
03:04certain Gentile woman. As a matter of fact, this story challenges all of our theology
03:10concerning Jesus and the way that he deals with people. This morning, when we think about Jesus,
03:18we predominantly think about somebody who always has his hands out and invites everyone to come
03:25to him. But yet in Mark chapter number 7, we see Jesus portrayed here in a little bit different
03:32light. In Mark chapter number 7, we see a Syrophoenician woman who was a Persian who had
03:39a daughter that was possessed by a devil. And she came to Jesus asking him to cast the devil out of
03:46her child. You see, that seems to me, Ms. Diane, that that was a very reasonable request. She had
03:53come to Jesus, she had heard about what Jesus had been doing, and she had asked Jesus to cast
03:59this devil out of her child. Now the problem here is where she came from. Her people were generally
04:08not believers in the Hebrew God. As a matter of fact, her people worshipped all sorts of different
04:16things. And her people this morning definitely did not believe in the Jewish Messiah. But yet
04:23in her time of need, we see a woman who heard about what Jesus had been doing, and she decided
04:31to come to Jesus and ask for mercy on behalf of her daughter. Now what Jesus tells her next
04:40is what contradicts the way that most people view Jesus. Can you picture Jesus this morning
04:49looking at this woman in her time of need as she is torn apart by the condition of her daughter,
04:57and then Jesus looks at her and says, let the children first be filled,
05:04for it is not meek to take the children's bread and cast it unto the dogs.
05:10Can you believe that Jesus said that to someone? I mean, when you look at this story from the
05:15outside, it almost looks like Jesus is mean and spiteful to this lady as he addresses her after
05:23she asked him if he would perform a miracle in the life of her daughter. And I don't care what
05:29Jesus told this woman right here, he said, I am for the Hebrew people, I'm not here for the
05:36Gentile dogs. That's what Jesus told her in Mark chapter number 7. Now you might ask the question
05:43this morning, why would Jesus address this woman in such a manner? I mean, you think about it,
05:50he called this woman a dog in front of all of his disciples. And another question we can ask
05:58this morning is, well, why wouldn't this woman take right offense and just get up and walk away
06:04offended? You see, most people, if they were treated like this woman was treated in that house,
06:12they would have gotten up and they would have left the house.
06:18But this woman, she didn't argue with Jesus, she didn't get offended at Jesus.
06:23Miss Connie, she didn't look at Jesus and say, well, you bunch of Jews are the ones who are a
06:27bunch of dogs, I'm out of here. You know, she didn't do any of that.
06:34Instead, what she did was she fell on her face and she said, yes, Lord,
06:39you have the dogs under the table, you have the children's problems.
06:43But what a statement that was. What a statement that was. You see this woman here in Mark chapter
06:50number seven, she admitted to Jesus that she was nothing more than a dog.
06:57But she told Jesus, she said, listen, I know that I'm nothing more than a dog,
07:01but I'm going to ask him for a couple of crumbs that was from the master's table.
07:10And as a result, Jesus looked at her and said, go my way, the devil has gone out of my daughter.
07:17And then the Bible says, and when she was coming to her house, she found the devil gone out
07:23and her daughter laid upon the bed. Oh, I'll tell you, Miss Cheryl, I bet you that when she got home
07:28and saw her daughter was healed and she was in her right mind, I bet they sat there and they
07:33showered, they rejoiced and they prayed and worshiped God. But this woman had faith that
07:42the crumbs which fell from the master's table were enough to meet the needs in her life.
07:50And this morning, as we continue to talk about faith, there are some tremendous lessons that we
07:58learn here in this story as we preach for just a little while on the subject, faith in the crumbs
08:06that fall from the master's table. Number one, we find that faith is established, watch this,
08:14faith is established when people hear about Jesus. Look at verse number 24, if you want.
08:25And from this, he arose and went into the boards of Tyre and Sidon and entered into a house
08:32and would have no man knoweth, but he could not be hid. Now watch verse 25, for a certain woman
08:39whose young daughter had an unclean spirit hung of him and came and fell at his feet.
08:48I want you to notice this morning that this woman heard that Jesus had been doing great things
08:54in people's lives. And as this woman had done everything she could to help her daughter,
09:02when she heard about Jesus, there was finally hope that her daughter could be saved.
09:08Now I point to you this morning, this woman had probably visited every Persian physician
09:13that she could find, she visited every Syrian doctor that she could find,
09:18and they all said the same thing, there's no hope, we've never seen anything like this before.
09:24This woman had probably went and found people who were skilled in pagan religions and in black
09:30magic, and as she looked for hope in religion, she found out that there was still no hope for
09:36her daughter. But when she heard that there was a man by the name of Jesus who was healing the
09:43multitude and casting out devil, she said right then, she said, I need to get to this man because
09:51this is the man that can help me. But this morning, what was it that drew this woman to Jesus?
10:01I'm going to tell you what drew her to Jesus. You see, people were talking about the great
10:08things that Jesus had done. Let me ask you a question this morning,
10:14and you don't have to answer this question, but I want to ask you a serious question.
10:18When was the last time that you heard someone outside of the church house
10:25brag about what Jesus had been doing in people's lives?
10:31You see, all week, every day of the week, we go to the workplace and we go in the world,
10:37and we hear people all the time talking about what's going on in their life and what they're
10:43doing and what other people are doing. But you know what we don't hear too much about anymore?
10:50We don't hear too much about people saying what Jesus is doing in their life.
10:56There was a time when we could go into the supermarkets and the livery and there were
11:02people who were actually talking about Jesus. When's the last time you went in the public and
11:10heard people talk about the great things that Jesus was doing in people's lives?
11:16And we wonder this morning why we are losing this generation. I'll tell you why. It's because men
11:23and women have stopped talking about the great things that Jesus had done in their lives.
11:30You see, the Bible tells us this morning that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word
11:35of God. Brother Jack, I'm going to tell you something. Faith is not just some magical thing
11:42that God gives to some people and gives to other people. I get so tired this morning
11:47of hearing these preachers get up there and say, oh, well, if you have faith, God gives it to you.
12:06People get excited when they hear about Jesus. That's where faith comes from.
12:19You see, faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Listen, in order
12:25for someone to have faith and in order for someone to come to God through faith,
12:31they must hear about Jesus. And this morning we pray for Gonzalez to be saved.
12:40We pray for our communities to be saved. But they cannot be saved if nobody is telling them about
12:48Jesus. You see, the Bible tells us in Romans chapter number 10, how shall they hear without
12:56a preacher? How can a person come to faith in Christ if nobody is telling them about the great
13:04things that Christ has done? When we read this story this morning in Mark chapter number seven,
13:14listen, this story ought to provoke us to get out into the highways and the edges,
13:20listen, and tell men and women that Jesus saves. Do you realize this morning when we look at the
13:27crisis in our world, this is the evidence that we're going to change the world.
13:34Because once again, get out there and start telling people what great things Jesus has done
13:39in our lives. And oftentimes this morning, and I'm guilty as everyone else, but oftentimes this
13:47morning when we look at the faithless world of today, so many times we just write it off by
13:54saying there's no hope. But do you know this morning that a faithless generation can come to
14:00faith if they hear about Jesus? If they hear about Jesus. So this morning when we read this chapter,
14:12Mark chapter number seven, number one, we find this morning that faith is established,
14:19watch this, when people hear about Jesus. But number two, not only do we find that
14:26faith is established when people hear about Jesus, watch this, number two,
14:31we find this morning that everyone is a candidate for faith. Everyone is a candidate for faith.
14:42Look at verse number 26 if you would.
14:50In verse 26 the Bible says the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by nation,
14:55which simply means that she was from Persia, and she sought him that he would cast for
15:01the devil out of her daughter. Now Jesus had already established that the purpose for his
15:12coming was for the children of Israel. Now watch Matthew chapter 15 verses 22 through 24,
15:20the same story from the perspective of Matthew. In verse 22 he said, behold a woman of Canaan
15:27came out of the same coast, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of
15:33David. My daughter is previously vexed with a devil, but he answered her now, O Lord. Now watch
15:40this, and his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth after us.
15:49But he answered and said, watch this, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of
15:56Israel. Now this woman was not Jewish. She was not Hebrew. As a matter of fact, the Jews, the
16:06Hebrews, they probably would have viewed this woman as an enemy, and her people would have
16:11viewed the Jewish people as enemies as well. But yet she believed that Jesus was the Messiah,
16:20and she came to him by faith. Now something I noticed in this story, Brother Bill,
16:26even Jesus' own disciples told her that Jesus was for Israel. Did you catch that this morning?
16:35Jesus' own disciples were telling her that she needed to leave because Jesus is not for you.
16:43They said Jesus is only for Israel. And then I think about what Jesus told her right here.
16:50Jesus then told her, he said, I am here for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
16:55But I want you to notice what this woman did. This woman would not accept that Jesus was not for her.
17:05She wouldn't accept that. She wouldn't believe that. She would come all that way because she
17:09had heard what Jesus was doing, and she was fully convinced that Jesus was for her and that Jesus
17:17would answer her plea. And by faith, she kept calling and kept pleading until her prayers
17:26were finally answered. So we come back to the question this morning, Ms. Cheryl,
17:34why was Jesus so hard on this woman who had come to him? I believe there were a couple of
17:41different reasons why Jesus was so hard on this woman. Number one, I believe this morning that
17:47maybe Jesus wanted to test her faith. In other words, Jesus wanted to know if she really believed.
17:57How much was she going to be able to take before she got up and left?
18:02What was she going to go through before she got up and left? So Jesus pushed her to the limits.
18:10But the faith that she had proved to be true. And I've been preaching this morning,
18:17listen, for like 30 years, and I've been preaching this morning, at the end of a person's faith,
18:23you'll always find out that God is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
18:30All she had to do is keep on going and not give up and just believe. And that's what she was willing
18:38to do. But why was Jesus so hard on this woman? Well, number two, as I read this story, Ms. Judy,
18:46maybe Jesus wanted to teach his disciples a little less. His disciples said in Matthew chapter 15,
18:54send her away. She's not one of us. You know, when Jesus called her a dog,
19:01all he was doing was saying what all of his disciples were thinking.
19:11His disciples were thinking right there, why is this dog coming out and bothering us?
19:18Who does this woman think she is? Jesus is a dog.
19:24So when Jesus called this woman a dog, he was simply saying what the disciples were thinking.
19:29I would imagine right there that as he made that statement to that lady, Ms. Patricia,
19:35I would imagine right there some of those disciples said, yeah, I can hear you, dog.
19:45But Jesus later in this story shows his disciples that he is far bigger than just the house of
19:54Israel. You know, I remember preaching to some young people one time, and they all had come
20:01from very bad backgrounds. And as I was preaching to them, I told them what Jesus had done in my
20:08life. And I tell everybody what God's done for me. I'm not ashamed of Jesus. I'll tell anyone
20:14what God's done for me. I'll tell these people what Jesus had done for me. And I said, listen,
20:20he can do the same thing for you. He came from very bad background.
20:26One of the ladies that I was preaching to stepped forward and she looked at me and she said,
20:31he might have done something for you, but he can't do anything for us.
20:36You know what she was telling me? She was telling me, she was saying,
20:40Jesus might be for you, but he's not for me. Oh, friend, I want to tell you something. Don't you
20:46ever think that Jesus is not for you. Don't you ever let somebody tell you or try to convince you
20:53that Jesus is not for you. Listen, Jesus this morning is for every man, woman, boy, or girl
20:59who will simply come to him and humble themselves and call upon his name. Don't you think that
21:06Jesus is not for you? I want you to know this morning that Jesus is for you. Those disciples
21:18had told that woman, they said, Jesus isn't for you. He's only for us. They found out later that
21:26Jesus was a whole lot bigger than just Israel. Amen. But number one, when we look at this story,
21:32we find that faith is established when people hear about Jesus. Number two, we find that everyone
21:38is a candidate for faith. But watch number three, we find that faith has to be proven and maintained
21:47even through adversity. Now look at verse number 27, if you would.
21:55In verse number 27, the Bible says, but Jesus said unto her, let the children first be filled,
22:04for it is not meant to take the children's bread and to cast it under the dogs.
22:11When trials and tribulations come into your life, let me ask you a question. Does your faith begin
22:16to change? When adversity comes into your life, does your faith begin to change?
22:28You see, when we read about this woman, her faith was tried. Jesus even in a few words told her
22:36that he was not going to help her. Yet she would not leave. She would not stop. She would not quit
22:44until she got a miracle from God. Now that, my friend, is what faith is. Faith doesn't change
22:54in the midst of adversity. When faith is challenged, it becomes stronger, not weaker.
23:04You know, far too often in life, our faith becomes dictated by different things
23:10that are happening in our lives. I'll give you an example.
23:15Our faith is more than sometimes changes when our mood changes.
23:22For some people, listen, their faith changes when their mood changes. If they are happy,
23:28they don't play bad. If they get sad or discouraged, they all of a sudden go from
23:34faith to malfaith. You see, that's the way that they feel dictates the strength of their faith.
23:44Listen, our faith changes this morning when our mood changes.
23:50It's easy this morning, Brother Jack, to have a lot of faith when you got a pocket full of cash.
23:55Amen.
23:57But far too many times, man, she begins to get angry.
24:03So does our faith.
24:06Listen, a lot of times this morning, our faith changes when our health changes.
24:12When our health starts to go down, unfortunately, so does our faith.
24:16But I want you to get something. If this is the only thing that you get when I'm preaching,
24:20I want you to get the next statement that I'm going to make. I always have at least
24:24one document this morning in my sermon. Amen. And this is it. Faith that is truly centered on
24:31the promises of God's Word will never change because all of it comes in like a pocket full of cash.
24:38And I want you to accept your faith that is centered on the promises of God's Word.
24:43Listen, it doesn't matter how you feel. It doesn't matter if your mood changes.
24:48It doesn't matter how much you have. It doesn't matter who you are.
24:53Yes.
24:57Because it's anchored and centered in the right place, which is the Word of God.
25:04And this morning, in order to be strong in faith, we have to be able to put our feelings aside.
25:13In order to be strong in faith, you've got to put your feelings aside.
25:17Listen, there's many times where we get tired and decide to give up on God.
25:22When God gave us the wonderful promise that if we definitely seek Him, He'll reward us.
25:29You say, well, how long should I seek after God?
25:33Listen, I'll tell you how long you should seek after God. You should
25:36seek after God until He performs what you've asked Him to do.
25:41Hey, don't stop believing in God and quit halfway through.
25:47Keep on seeking God. Keep on believing. Keep coming back. Listen, that's what this woman did.
25:53Can you imagine what would have happened if she would have just quit halfway through and left that home?
26:01Her daughter wouldn't have been healed. Her daughter would have still been sick.
26:07Eventually, her daughter would have died.
26:12But she believed even through adversity, and her belief never changed. Even though it seemed like
26:18she was facing rejection, her belief never changed. And she's seeking out and seeking out
26:24until God gave her a miracle. This morning, don't be like so many others who just give
26:31up and give over. Listen, seek God until He works a miracle in your life.
26:37So some lessons we learn in this story here in Mark chapter number seven. Number one,
26:42we find that faith is established when people hear about Jesus.
26:47Number two, we find that everyone is a candidate for faith. Number three, we find that faith has
26:53to be proven and maintained through adversity. Number four, we find that faith is manifested
27:02in humility. Faith this morning is manifested in humility. Watch verse number 28.
27:12She answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord. Now watch this. Yet the dogs under the table
27:19eat of the children's frogs. When I think about this woman this morning, I see a woman here who
27:28humbly fell on her face before Jesus. Listen, in order to come to Jesus, you can't come full of
27:37pride. You have to see yourself in the same light as this woman saw herself. Now, some of you right
27:46there might be asking me a question. Well, Brother Robbie, are you saying that I have to see myself
27:50as a dog? I remember several years ago talking to a Jewish man who based everything spiritual
28:00on the fact that he was Jewish. True story. And I was talking to him and I was trying to tell him
28:06about Jesus and how he needed Jesus and that being Jewish wouldn't save him. And throughout
28:11our conversation, the man became very offended at me. And I still remember the man looked at me and
28:18he said, Well, I'll tell you what you are. You're nothing but a Gentile dog. He quoted that same
28:23scripture. A Gentile dog. I didn't really get offended. I've never been called that before.
28:30But I went to my pastor, Dr. Don Green later on and I said, Dr. Green, I said, you'll never guess
28:35what someone said to me today. He said, what's that? I said, this Jewish man looked at me and
28:40said, you're nothing more than a Gentile dog. Dr. Green looked at me and said, you are a dog.
28:47I don't know why your pastor told you that you're a dog, but I'll never forget what my pastor told
28:56me. He said, but he was a dog. He ate the crumbs from the man's table. So I didn't find this morning
29:06being a dog like that. If it means that I can come to Christ and he'll hear and answer my prayers.
29:14But listen, faith this morning is manifested in humility. You know, it takes humility
29:23to leave your seat during an invitation and come to an old fashioned altar. It does,
29:27it takes humility. It takes humility to leave your religion and come and follow Jesus.
29:35It takes humility to be a Christian in front of a non-Christian society.
29:44But you see, faith this morning is manifested in humility. But I want you to also notice
29:52something else that this lady did. Did you notice in the scripture that this lady also acknowledged
29:59that Jesus was Lord? Look at verse number 28. And she answered and said unto him, yes, Lord,
30:10yes, Lord, get the dogs under the table, eat of the children's cross.
30:19Now this woman was a Syrophoenician, Greek, Gentile, maybe even Persian woman.
30:27Could you imagine this morning a Persian woman turning to a Jewish man and calling him Lord?
30:36That's almost unheard of, isn't it? In order to do that, she had to step away from everything
30:44and everybody that she had ever known and completely trust Jesus by faith.
30:51You know, that's why I think about the great faith and humility of those in Iraq and Iran
30:56and many of those Arab countries this morning who have stepped away from their religion
31:02and they have put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ and acknowledged someone who was Jewish
31:10as Lord. Do you realize this morning that when they do that,
31:15they literally put a death sentence upon their wife and their family.
31:23But in humility, they're willing to turn away from everything they've ever known
31:27and say, yes, Lord, just like this woman did.
31:33You see, that right there is fake. But I want you to know something this morning. Jesus is not
31:40only the King of the Jews. Listen, he's not only the Lord over the lost sheep of the house of
31:44Israel. Jesus this morning is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He's Lord over everything.
31:52And this morning, you can have him. But in order to have him, you might have to humble yourself.
31:59You might have to step away from some people or some things. You might have to step away from
32:04some religion. But if you're willing to do that, then Jesus will be yours.
32:13So number one, we find that faith is established when people hear about Jesus.
32:18Number two, we find that everyone is a candidate for faith. Number three, we find that faith has
32:25to be proven and maintained through adversity. In other words, don't give up. When things get
32:33difficult, trust in God more. Number four, we find that faith is manifested in humility.
32:41And then number five, my last one, and then I'm going to be through.
32:44We find number five, that Jesus responds to faith. Jesus responds to faith.
32:54Look at verse number 29, if you would.
33:03In verse number 29, the Bible says,
33:07the Bible says, and he said unto her, for this sake, go thine way. The devil is gone out of
33:17thy daughter. Verse number 30, watch this. And when she was come to her house,
33:23she found the devil gone out and her daughter laid upon the bed.
33:30You see, Jesus this morning responds to faith. Don't think just because you haven't gotten a
33:35prayer answer that Jesus isn't listening, he doesn't hear you, he doesn't respond.
33:39He responds to faith. Now, I want you to think about this. In Matthew's account,
33:46Matthew gives an account of the same exact story. In Matthew's account, we get a little
33:51bit more dialogue concerning the conversation between Jesus and this woman. In Matthew 15, 28,
33:59the Bible says, then Jesus answered and said unto her, watch this, O woman, great is thy faith.
34:09Did you notice right there that this time he didn't call her a dog?
34:13You see, that was a test. That was a lesson to the disciples. That's not how Jesus addresses
34:19people. She passed the test and he said, O woman, great is thy faith. He said,
34:26be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
34:33Do you know this morning before that woman ever made it home, her daughter was made whole.
34:39All the Lord Jesus had to do was simply speak the word.
34:43But what if this woman would have just given up when Jesus tested her faith?
34:48Well, as we talked about earlier, her daughter would have just gotten worse and worse and worse.
34:52I couldn't imagine this morning if that woman would have gotten mad at Jesus and offended at
34:56Jesus and stormed out of that house. And then she would have went home and saw her daughter sitting
35:02in the bed wallowing and foaming at the mouth, watching some devil just tear her apart. I
35:07couldn't imagine how terrible that would have been. But her faith kept her there.
35:16But just think about what would have happened if she would have given up on her faith and
35:19left the house that day without an answer to her prayer. You see, this lady's life would
35:25have just gotten worse and worse as well. But glory to God, this morning, this woman found
35:31grace from the crumbs that fell from the master's table. And one more thing, and then I'm going to
35:37be through this morning. When Jesus rewarded this woman, he did it openly in front of his disciples.
35:47He did it openly. Now, his disciples previously said, send her away. She's now heaven-bound.
35:57Jesus looked at this woman in front of his disciples and said, oh, woman,
36:02rake is thine. I would imagine right there that his disciples probably sat there and just wondered
36:09and were confounded. See, he was teaching her a lesson, but he was also teaching them a lesson.
36:18In other words, Jesus showed his disciples that day that he was not just for them,
36:23but he was for everybody who would come to him by faith.
36:28And I'm glad to know this morning that Jesus is not just for us.
36:32Listen, he's for everybody. And this morning, the greatest sin of the church in 2024
36:40is the fact that we're keeping Jesus to us. He's not only for us, he's for the entire world. Let's
36:48get out there into the highways and the hedges and compel them to come in so they can hear about
36:53Jesus and come to simple faith in Christ. This morning, I want you to know that Jesus is for you
37:00if you'll come as we talk about faith in the crumbs that fall from the master's table.
