00:00Surprise!
00:02Surprise!
00:04It's just a game!
00:06You don't have to guess anymore, right?
00:08You just have to tell the story.
00:10There you are!
00:12I'm so happy! I'm okay!
00:14I'm so excited to see you on screen.
00:18And knowing that you're our surprise guest,
00:20I forgot to tell our listeners and
00:22well, I'm sure the viewers can see, but
00:24I forgot to tell our listeners who our surprise guest is.
00:26Of course!
00:28Other than Suzy Entrata-Abrera,
00:30of course, of Morning Fame.
00:34Yes, for a long time.
00:36Yes, for a long time, right?
00:38How long has it been, Suzy?
00:40It's going to be the 25th year this December.
00:42We will be celebrating the 25th.
00:44Because the 25th is also the birthday of UH.
00:46Because at the same time,
00:48the year it started, you're already there.
00:50Yes, I was born the year it started.
00:52I'm kidding.
00:54Definitely, and the year before that,
00:56I joined the previous morning show
00:58which was Mornings at GMA.
01:00So a few of us, we crossed over
01:02to when they reformatted it
01:04to Unang Hirit.
01:06Because back in the day, the morning shows
01:08were actually more business-oriented.
01:10The morning show was in English.
01:12So it was for people
01:14who were on their way to work
01:16because there were stock markets.
01:18Absolutely.
01:20Up to now, I don't know about
01:22the stock market.
01:24This is where I ended up
01:26in this version of the morning show.
01:28But yeah, that's how it was.
01:30When they started out, it was Tito Mon Esberto.
01:32He's the true godfather of morning TV, I think.
01:34And he would do the show
01:36in one of the buildings in Makati.
01:38And it'll just be himself
01:40and maybe he has a co-host.
01:42And then that's it.
01:44They would talk about mostly business
01:46as it's an English language.
01:48And then they did Mornings at GMA
01:50and it became a bit English.
01:52And when they became Taglish,
01:54the English speakers topped out
01:56because they couldn't do it anymore.
01:58We need to speak Tagalog here.
02:02It's a good thing you're very versatile.
02:04It's possible.
02:06Actually, Paolo Bejones came to me
02:08because he was the one who was in the morning show.
02:10And he was also leaving
02:12to do a different show.
02:14So he was looking for a guy and a girl
02:16who can speak Tagalog.
02:18And he got Ryan Agoncillo
02:20to replace Paolo.
02:22And then got me to replace Cher Calvin
02:24because Cher is really English.
02:26She's Filang.
02:28So she couldn't do the newscast
02:30in Tagalog. So they got me.
02:32In Mornings at GMA,
02:34you had a lifestyle segment?
02:36Or were you doing the news?
02:38No, I was the newscaster.
02:40What?
02:42Oh my gosh, we've known each other for a long time.
02:44I just realized
02:46what does Suzy do in the mornings?
02:48And what was your segment?
02:50Wow, you were doing the news!
02:52Because Cher Calvin,
02:54that was her assignment.
02:56She was doing the main news.
02:58Tito Juan was doing the business news.
03:00Tisha Silang was doing the international news.
03:02And Paolo was doing
03:04the sports news, etc.
03:06But also, they would do features and interviews as well.
03:08So it was a four-man show
03:10where they would do everything.
03:12They had assignments for both news and features.
03:14So your assignment was hard news?
03:16Yes.
03:18Until somebody figured out that
03:20this is not the girl
03:22for this job.
03:26Why not?
03:28It's just that you had other interests
03:30and other likes.
03:32I think my personality is a little more casual.
03:34And also because I freaked out
03:36in a news report.
03:38I could be mistaken.
03:40I think it was Matthew Fahatin.
03:42He had a video of
03:44a raid that happened
03:46the night before or during the evening.
03:48And so he was annotating it.
03:50So we could only see the video
03:52of this guy who was being followed by the police.
03:54He entered a room
03:56at a door.
03:58The camera didn't follow him.
04:00The camera stayed outside.
04:02And then whoever the reporter was annotating this,
04:04there was a gunshot.
04:06This is live?
04:08Yes, live annotation.
04:10So I freaked out because of that scene.
04:12And I was like,
04:14what is this?
04:16How did this happen?
04:18Tito Mon was behind the camera
04:20and he was like going, relax.
04:22He was going like that because
04:24I was really rattled.
04:26They didn't take me out of the job
04:28because of that.
04:30It was just because we reformatted
04:32the first part.
04:34The reformat was just right.
04:36So when the first part came,
04:38were you still doing hard news
04:40or lifestyle?
04:42No more, lifestyle.
04:44We got Martin Andanar.
04:46He was our newscaster before Martin.
04:48He was the one who did the hard news for us.
04:50Tito Mon also
04:52joined us for just a couple of months.
04:54And then it was harder for him
04:56because the show became an hour earlier.
04:58So Tito Mon had a corporate job.
05:00So he couldn't
05:02really work
05:04until the whole day of business.
05:06And then Tish, it was hard for her
05:08because the UH was purely Tagalog.
05:10Oh, okay.
05:12And then Arnold
05:14became the main guy
05:16and then Mickey Furyals.
05:18Miriam Kiambao was also on the show.
05:20So you were the OG.
05:22The OG morning girl.
05:24Morning show host.
05:26And very blessed because
05:28in our business, we know
05:30shows come and go.
05:32Sometimes even if it's doing well,
05:34you wonder if it's okay.
05:36That's the flavor that people are looking for.
05:38So that show will be gone.
05:40But I guess Unang Hirit,
05:42thankfully, has been around for so long.
05:44We're like bubblegum.
05:46In terms of longevity.
05:48So how lucky you are
05:50to be a part of that show.
05:52Like me, I'm still working.
05:54I'm so grateful, of course.
05:56And it's a very special connection,
05:58special bond, I think, that Unang Hirit hosts
06:00have with viewers.
06:02You really feel like
06:04you'll get to know each other.
06:06Yes.
06:08I'm sure you've experienced that
06:10when you're outside, in a mall,
06:12someone calls you Suzy.
06:14Do you think, is she my friend?
06:16Do I really know her?
06:18You're right. And in that tone,
06:20like a friend that you see.
06:22Hey, Suzy!
06:24Or when we're remote
06:26in the barangays,
06:28they're like,
06:30Hey, Suzy, morning!
06:32It's part of their morning.
06:34And when people say,
06:36how long were you on UH?
06:38Certainly not as long as you.
06:40You know what?
06:42I think it seemed like it was long,
06:44but it actually was short.
06:46Maybe two or three years.
06:48Yes.
06:50But it's hard.
06:52Yes.
06:54That's why
06:56Ivan and Maris are amazed
06:58that after the show,
07:00it's a full day.
07:02They can't take a nap or anything, right?
07:04Yes, exactly.
07:06You can't take a nap in the Senate hearing
07:08or the Congress hearing.
07:10Although I'm sure they want to sometimes,
07:12but they can't.
07:14But you know, what I always say is,
07:16once a part of UH, always a part of UH.
07:18And that's evident in the Christmas parties.
07:20Correct.
07:22Marriages, weddings, debuts.
07:24Yes, that's also true.
07:26And it's nice to see everybody,
07:28even if we don't have similar schedules
07:30or the same schedules anymore.
07:32That's it.
07:34But yes, the affinity is still the same.
07:36Same as before.
07:38And you know one thing I remember
07:40before I started doing Unang Hirit,
07:42because I was doing the graveyard shift
07:44in the news.
07:46So my duty was 12 midnight to 8 am.
07:48So if it's around 4 or 5 am,
07:50I'm already in the studio,
07:52I can see everyone arriving.
07:54I always feel like,
07:56they're not sleepy.
07:58Right?
08:00Unang Hirit,
08:02I always say also,
08:04it's hard to wake up,
08:06but once you're in the show,
08:08you're happy.
08:10And it's not fake or contrived.
08:12It's just good vibes and all.
08:14You're right.
08:16In the morning,
08:18I want to go back to bed.
08:20And when you arrive,
08:22you're happy.
08:24And it doesn't stop.
08:26The openings of the show
08:28are different throughout the year.
08:30So there was a time that all of us are there
08:32at the opening.
08:34And all of us have a line to say.
08:36For example,
08:38we're 7, you're 8.
08:40So take turns.
08:42Well, I was waiting for my turn one time.
08:44As in, I was really waiting
08:46at the opening.
08:48At the set.
08:50At the live TV.
08:52Because I thought,
08:54the camera wouldn't focus on me.
08:56Because it's a solo shot.
08:58And I saw Tita Kors.
09:00Tita Kory Mandiola.
09:02I heard her.
09:04And she was like,
09:06hey, Susie, wake up.
09:08She couldn't believe that I
09:10wanted to sleep during the opening.
09:14Wait, was this with Leona,
09:16the main actress?
09:18I think so, yeah.
09:20So it's understandable
09:22if she's the main actress.
09:24I guess, or any pregnancy.
09:26Because she's sleepy.
09:28I don't know if you remember that with Miki.
09:30She's like a jet lag.
09:32Kind of sleepy.
09:34She's like, oh, I want to sleep right away.
09:36That's how I would feel.
09:38So the morning show was kind of hard
09:40because I dried myself.
09:42So after the show,
09:44I took a nap
09:46before going home because I live far
09:48from the studio.
09:50So I would sleep first, by the way,
09:52then nap somewhere before going home
09:54because I was sleepy during the break.
09:56I was really amazed
09:58by your energy, Susie.
10:00Because usually, after the show,
10:02you're sleepy.
10:04I don't know.
10:0610 minutes before 8 AM,
10:08you feel like you're going down
10:10and you're in a hurry to go home.
10:12But you're having breakfast,
10:14coffee.
10:16Yes. Is that also to avoid traffic?
10:18I guess, in a sense.
10:20And also because the malls are still closed.
10:22Because that's where
10:24you'll go after the show.
10:26Yes, because that's where I'll either
10:28go grocery shopping or work out.
10:30It's usually in a mall, and the malls open at 10.
10:32Some are open at 11.
10:34So after the show, I really can't go anywhere.
10:36Because that's how it ends early.
10:38So I'll be there for a while.
10:40We'll chat, have coffee and stuff
10:42before I start leaving GMA.
10:44Maybe around 9 or 9.30.
10:46I'll be there by 10.30 or 11.
10:48Something like that.
10:50That's how it is.
10:52You'll have a lot to do with your day.
10:54Because that's how it ends early.
10:56So if there are sales, I'll be there first
10:58because I'm leaving GMA.
11:00Wow.
11:02And also the online sales,
11:04because you're up early.
11:06Yes.
11:08You're really awake.
11:11So in your 25 years
11:13of waking up early,
11:15as in extra early,
11:17what kind of routine have you developed?
11:19I know that you're
11:21a very fit person.
11:23I try.
11:25You have to have the discipline
11:27to maintain that kind of lifestyle.
11:29Also because right now,
11:31I'm only doing this one show.
11:33So I really do have a lot of time on my hands.
11:35Technically speaking, I have no excuse
11:37to not find the time
11:39to exercise.
11:41When people do compliment me and say,
11:43Oh, you're so fit and you're so like that.
11:45It's good that you're working out.
11:47Usually, for example, she's a doctor.
11:49Because I'm not a doctor.
11:51What I mean is,
11:53you do a lot in a day.
11:55Or I don't go to the office.
11:57So those people, whenever they do
11:59find the time to exercise,
12:01I'm more strict with them.
12:03Because what time do they look for?
12:05Is it before your morning commute to the office?
12:07Or is it after a full day
12:09you've already spent working at the office?
12:11Are you still going to work out?
12:13Or are you just going to sleep?
12:15So kudos to those
12:17who find the time to work out
12:19because they don't have the time.
12:21Or they don't have as much time as I do.
12:23But have you always been
12:25a very active person?
12:27I know that you did game plan,
12:29which means the start of your career,
12:31you're very active.
12:33Were you athletic when you were young?
12:35Yes, as in,
12:37even if there's a bike race
12:39between neighbors.
12:41Anything like that.
12:43Like a 15-meter sprint
12:45where we're the only ones
12:47wearing flip flops.
12:49Or even in school,
12:51I was a swimmer also because my family,
12:53my dad comes from a family of swimmers.
12:55So all of us really had to know how to swim.
12:57So we took swimming lessons
12:59during the summer.
13:01So when there's a swimming competition
13:03in high school, grade school,
13:05I really joined. I joined competitions
13:07and then I got into volleyball also.
13:09I joined the grade school and high school varsity.
13:11Things like that.
13:13I was into soccer for a while,
13:15so I joined. I didn't have a girls team at the time
13:17in the CSA, or maybe there was.
13:19But I was joining a boys team
13:21with my other girlfriend.
13:23It was really hard.
13:25I thought...
13:27I thought I was having a hard time jogging.
13:29There was a time when I got strong
13:31and I joined both the swimming varsity
13:33and the volleyball varsity.
13:37And that lasted a week.
13:39I almost died.
13:43Monday, Wednesday, Friday is volleyball training.
13:45Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday is swim training.
13:47So I tried to do that.
13:49I almost... I couldn't.
13:51That's intense. So which one did you choose?
13:53Volleyball.
13:55Until I got kicked out of school.
13:57My volleyball coach
13:59in CSA.
14:01You got kicked out of the team,
14:03not the school.
14:05No, you're right.
14:07Thank you for making that clarification.
14:09Maybe our listeners will think.
14:11I know that you had a high school reunion
14:13and you were really happy there.
14:15Yes, you're right.
14:17Always a fun reunion in CSA.
14:19But I got kicked out because
14:21the games that
14:23enter school are on Saturdays.
14:25And then I have a really good friend,
14:27Jeffrey, who's in the band.
14:29So on Saturdays,
14:31they either practice or perform.
14:33We always have fun
14:35at the mall.
14:37So, let's go.
14:39Don't go with her.
14:41So I joined her.
14:43After a while,
14:45my coach,
14:47Ms. Vita, told me
14:49this is your last time.
14:51Next time you're in the game, you're out of the team.
14:53She gave me fair warning, truly.
14:55During the reunions,
14:57she's still working in CSA.
14:59Every time she sees me,
15:01she thinks it's because I kept doing cheerleading.
15:03I was also, for a while,
15:05the head cheerleader.
15:07Yes, yes, yes.
15:09The cheerleading styles are different.
15:11Not like the ones that you see now.
15:13Like Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.
15:15Oh, that's too far.
15:17That's like Netflix.
15:19That's not true.
15:21We're more jazz-based.
15:23Our moves are different.
15:25Until there was a new student
15:27from the States, Vanessa.
15:29Then she came to CSA.
15:31She's from the States.
15:33She incorporated the new moves.
15:35She became the head cheerleader
15:37of the fourth year.
15:41I was kicked out again.
15:45The way you describe
15:47your high school life,
15:49you're the quintessential
15:51popular kid.
15:53Cheerleader.
15:55Volleyball player.
15:57Friends with guys in the band.
16:01I remember, weren't you
16:03prom queen or Miss CSA?
16:05Miss CSA.
16:07Binebining CSA.
16:09Wow, Suzy, it's your turn.
16:11She surprised me.
16:13I was the one who won.
16:15Then I realized,
16:17the question and answer portion is important.
16:21That's where it happened.
16:27Do you remember the question?
16:29Do you remember?
16:31Wow, that's a good question.
16:35Binebining CSA
16:37is put together by the
16:39Adeo Datos Foundation.
16:41The Adeo Datos Foundation supports scholars.
16:43The scholars that we have are
16:45I can't remember if they were high school scholars
16:47or college scholars.
16:49What I said was
16:51how do you think we can improve
16:53the program of the Adeo Datos
16:55Foundation?
16:57To be able to
16:59start them younger.
17:01To include them in grade school,
17:03education in CSA,
17:05up to high school, preparing them even more for college.
17:09Anyway, the school is already there.
17:11To get them started
17:13earlier, to incorporate more
17:15scholars from the very beginning.
17:17That's it.
17:19Good answer. That's why you won
17:21Binebining CSA.
17:23I was doing my own stuff.
17:25Sportswear,
17:27high ponytail,
17:29evening gown,
17:31hairspray.
17:33Send us a picture,
17:35Suzy. Send us a picture.
17:37Do you still have it?
17:39I'm sure I have it.
17:41I'm sure I found it
17:43and took a picture of it
17:45in my album, my throwback album.
17:47I'm gonna send it.
17:49I only have one picture, I think.
17:51Wow.
17:53Just for my curiosity.
17:55I had very long hair.
17:57I wore my hair
17:59very long for quite a while
18:01until I started working
18:03more in GMA because
18:05Neil Gumban didn't like my long hair.
18:07So I had to...
18:09It's long.
18:11Yes, it's like that.
18:13Because Tisha already had long hair.
18:15Maybe he didn't want
18:17to have long hair.
18:19So I eventually cut my hair.
18:21But for the longest time, I wore it very long.
18:23When you say it was very long,
18:25as in up to half of your head?
18:27Like a sambra line.
18:29Wow.
18:31It's really long.
18:33As in long hair.
18:35Was it always your dream,
18:37your goal to be on TV,
18:39to be a part of the broadcast industry?
18:41I don't think so.
18:43I was always the MC in school.
18:45I'm not surprised.
18:47Right?
18:49And you're a volunteer.
18:51I would join when I was in
18:53grade school. I remember my parents
18:55always being there for me, of course.
18:57Declanation contests.
18:59English or Tagalog, I would join.
19:01And then there's this one girl.
19:03Her name is Judith.
19:05I mentioned her a lot in this podcast.
19:07She's so good.
19:09Super, super good.
19:11As soon as she joined,
19:13I was in second place.
19:15Was it your first time in second place?
19:17No, I was always in second place.
19:19One time, she got sick.
19:21She abstained.
19:23I won.
19:25But she was that good.
19:27Eventually, she moved schools.
19:29And then she came back to the school
19:31because she became part of the debate team.
19:33Because she's really good at speaking.
19:35That's why she joined. That's why she won.
19:37I guess ever since,
19:39I can speak Tagalog.
19:41I can do both English and Tagalog.
19:43I grew up Tagalog.
19:45We didn't speak English at home, really.
19:47We knew how to speak English,
19:49but we were always Tagalog in the house.
19:51But when I was doing Game Planet,
19:53it was an English show.
19:55I was super English then.
19:57People were like,
19:59do you know how to speak Tagalog?
20:01Oh my gosh!
20:03I've been pretending to be Tagalog for a long time.
20:05Oh my gosh! I've been pretending to be Tagalog for a long time.
20:07That's why Benjones,
20:09when he asked me to join Morning,
20:11he said,
20:13but this is Tagalog.
20:15The newscast is in Tagalog.
20:17Do you know how to speak Tagalog?
20:19I said, I'm Tagalog.
20:21He said, but why in Game Planet?
20:23The format of Game Planet is English.
20:25Of course, I can speak English.
20:27Because before, I would do both shows.
20:29The Morning show, which was in Tagalog,
20:31and Game Planet, which was in English.
20:33So, I can just switch easily.
20:35I would do the Morning show,
20:37then we would do the Game Planet,
20:39Tagalog in the morning, English in the afternoon.
20:41But after a while,
20:43because the show is in Tagalog,
20:45sometimes when I speak English,
20:47people would ask me,
20:49do you know how to speak English?
20:51It's almost like a muscle.
20:53If you don't practice it often,
20:55I would give up.
20:57I wouldn't speak English to my children
20:59and my husband.
21:01That's why I don't practice it often.
21:05They're already old,
21:07they can understand you.
21:09Yes, they should understand me.
21:11Because when they're outside,
21:13they can't understand what I'm saying.
21:15It was too late when we realized that.
21:17Paolo is from an English household.
21:19So, he really speaks English.
21:21That's why QTV was like that before.
21:23Their show was in English,
21:25then they made it in Tagalog.
21:27QTV switched for a while.
21:29In the beginning,
21:31it should be a different channel
21:33from G&E.
21:35So, to make it different, it was more English.
21:37Then suddenly,
21:39we made it in Tagalog.
21:41Good luck to Paolo's VOs.
21:43He could always be valid.
21:45He said, I know how to speak Tagalog.
21:47I said, but I can't speak Tagalog fluently.
21:49The way we do,
21:51when you guys do the news,
21:53don't use words like that
21:55when you talk regularly with another person.
21:57It's like,
21:59you're not doing that.
22:01It's difficult for him.
22:03So, we have three daughters.
22:05There's Leona, there's Jade.
22:07They're English.
22:09Then we realized that
22:11they might have a hard time in the future.
22:13I said,
22:15I grew up in Tagalog.
22:17At home.
22:19But when I grew older,
22:21I can speak English.
22:23Nela, let's make her Tagalog.
22:25So, Nela is our youngest.
22:27She's the oldest.
22:29I don't know where she's from.
22:31She's from a recessive genes.
22:33She's Paolo's aunt.
22:35We're the same age.
22:37My mom is the oldest.
22:39She's the oldest.
22:41But when you talk to her,
22:43she speaks super Tagalog.
22:45I thought she was English.
22:47But in the end, she adjusted to her siblings.
22:49She's like that.
22:51They're all English now.
22:53Maybe they're already Tagalog.
22:55But I encourage them, ask me questions.
22:57Ask me what certain words are.
22:59If you don't understand it,
23:01ask me.
23:03This is the best chance for you.
23:05They'll realize that
23:07you don't know how to speak Tagalog.
23:09That's what they say.
23:11You can't be sold.
23:13It shouldn't be like that.
23:15Now that they moved to big schools,
23:17they encounter more Tagalog classmates.
23:19Which helps them.
23:21Because they have more now.
23:23Yes, because their school was small.
23:25Small school, small classroom,
23:27small class.
23:29And they're all English speakers.
23:31So good luck.
23:33They're exposed to Tagalog.
23:35I'm embarrassed sometimes.
23:37Because they're my children.
23:39I'm so good at Tagalog.
23:41But my kids aren't.
23:43I feel like I mistook them.
23:45That's why my listeners
23:47sometimes feel embarrassed
23:49when they grew up in America
23:51but their family kept talking
23:53to the children in Tagalog.
23:55They still speak Tagalog.
23:57All around, they speak English.
23:59If that's the case, blame Paolo.
24:01I know, that's why I stay out of it.
24:03This is their father. He's English.
24:07Oh, but you mentioned
24:09the kids are all grown up.
24:11Leona is 21.
24:13Let's backtrack a bit
24:15and talk about how you and Paolo
24:17first met and got together.
24:19We saw most of it on TV, right?
24:21Because I remember
24:23Game Plan Days,
24:25we always said,
24:27Suzy and Paolo are really in real life.
24:29Oh!
24:35Stay updated with Nelson Canlas.
24:37Have you been busted?
24:39No.
24:41Come with confidence.
24:43The online source for anything showbiz.
24:45Wait a minute, Ray.
24:47I have a surprise for you.
24:49Hello?
24:51The latest celebrity news.
24:53Something new for our updaters.
24:55You've been keeping this a secret
24:57for 7 months.
24:59Why did you only reveal it now?
25:01I'm a newbie.
25:03Please tell us the reason
25:05why Carla and I broke up.
25:07Wow, straight to the point.
25:09Follow the principle.
25:11Whatever you do,
25:13be fair and be grateful.
25:15Updated with Nelson Canlas.
25:23Let's backtrack a bit
25:25and talk about how you and Paolo
25:27first met and got together.
25:29We saw most of it on TV, right?
25:31Because I remember
25:33Game Plan Days,
25:35we always said,
25:37Suzy and Paolo are really in real life.
25:39Oh!
25:41Is that right?
25:43But we never
25:45showed that.
25:47They would always just sort of surmise
25:49except if they knew that we were dating.
25:51But the viewers were like,
25:53they're not acting like they're together.
25:57When we finally got married,
25:59some people were like,
26:01I knew it.
26:03There was another sports show before.
26:05The host was a boyfriend.
26:07They really
26:09showed their relationship
26:11on cam as a couple.
26:13As a sporty couple.
26:15People are always just like,
26:17are they together or not?
26:19Eventually, we had our wedding
26:21and it was featured on Game Plan.
26:23Why did I find out
26:25that someone was gossiping about me?
26:27Maybe.
26:29You're so much younger.
26:31Did you used to watch our show?
26:33I was in college, yes.
26:35How old were you when you started
26:37doing Game Plan?
26:39I was also in college last year.
26:41So 1996.
26:43Then I graduated in 1997.
26:45Then we did the show together
26:47until 2001 when we got married.
26:51I was watching it in college
26:53because I went to college in 1996.
26:55My later years in college.
26:57Yes, I was about to leave.
26:59All the viewers
27:01are like,
27:03she's already in college in 1996?
27:05She's so young.
27:09Did you leave the show
27:11because you're already married?
27:13Yes, in that sense.
27:15Actually, the truth is
27:17when you work for pro,
27:19nobody wants to leave, I think.
27:21It's such a family setting.
27:23We all work together as a team.
27:25People really care about each other.
27:27You get the best training there.
27:29It was really hard for us to meet.
27:31I got so upset the night
27:33we were shooting the last episode.
27:35We were going to turn over to the new batch of hosts
27:37which are Reveal Son,
27:39Tricia, Akiko,
27:41and Carlo Ledesma.
27:43We shot out of town.
27:45Of course, we had a few drinks.
27:47More than a few drinks.
27:51I was crying and crying.
27:55It was so hard to let go, honestly.
27:57But we also knew that
27:59it's time to give a chance to others.
28:01It's time for us to mature
28:03and do other things.
28:05So you did the show
28:07from 1996 to 2001 for 5 years?
28:09Actually, from 1996 to 1997,
28:11I was with Paolo Bejonas
28:13or Mon Castro.
28:15We were the second batch.
28:17Paolo and I were the third batch
28:19and we did that for 4 years.
28:21That's right.
28:23The fourth batch was Reveal Son.
28:25Then we had a fifth batch.
28:27We had a lot of game plans.
28:31So you met Paolo on the show
28:33or you knew him even before then?
28:35I met him on the show
28:37but I was the new batch with Paolo and Mon.
28:39But he was always
28:41hanging out in the prom office
28:43because he was a friend of the producers.
28:45So even though he wasn't hosting the show anymore,
28:47he was always there in the office.
28:49So when we were taping,
28:51we were shooting, he was there sometimes.
28:53I was super, super close to him.
28:55Because
28:57he was like,
28:59look at me today.
29:01I'm sweating.
29:03That's how close we were.
29:05Super, super close.
29:07Were you able to talk to him?
29:09Because sometimes when you're so close,
29:11you can't talk to him.
29:13Correct. Not really.
29:15I was like, hey pao, what's up?
29:17Like that.
29:19Then we were shooting in Subic.
29:21He was my crush.
29:23I know, right?
29:25I couldn't believe it.
29:27He was really my dream guy.
29:29Truth is, I remember telling
29:31Anna Rod, hi Anna!
29:35You know Anna Rod? She was also in GMA for a while.
29:37Yes, of course.
29:39Anna Rod was also my EP.
29:41Artangel, for a few episodes.
29:45So Anna
29:47was the one who brought me into Gameplan.
29:49Because she's a higher batch
29:51for me, maybe two batches.
29:53Then she was in Gameplan.
29:55Then her boyfriend
29:57became the sub-teacher in the school
29:59because I was doing Warangdo,
30:01which is a Korean martial arts.
30:03I was with my friends.
30:05So I was doing Warangdo.
30:07Her boyfriend was also a guest teacher.
30:09Then Anna,
30:11I was the only one, right?
30:13So we were super close.
30:15Then I said, so what do you do now?
30:17Then she said, I'm a producer for Gameplan.
30:19I said, yes! I do know Gameplan.
30:21Then she made fun of me.
30:23Wow, you need a new host there.
30:25Then she said, actually, yes.
30:27Our first batch, which is Paolo Abrera, Yas Mapua,
30:29and Rufi Parpan, they're leaving now.
30:31After a year, they're going to do other stuff.
30:33Paolo's going to study, Yas is going to do this.
30:35Rufi's going to do that.
30:37Maybe you want to audition.
30:39And that's it. I auditioned because of that.
30:41And I got accepted.
30:43But Paolo Hay
30:45wasn't in Gameplan anymore.
30:47And that's how I met him.
30:49Then I told Anna when we were shooting.
30:51I remember I said, Anna,
30:53I have to tell you something.
30:55You have to fade this crush
30:57on Paolo Abrera.
30:59She said
31:01join the club.
31:05Join the club.
31:09That's all.
31:13That's how many Paolo Natics.
31:15Yes, yes, yes.
31:17Because, wow!
31:19Clothes are so tight.
31:21Like Momotong.
31:23Tall.
31:24Handsome.
31:25Those are the commercial days of Paolo.
31:27Yes.
31:28Saturday nights.
31:29Yes.
31:30He's an artist for a while.
31:32Yes, he has a movie.
31:34I remember he has a movie.
31:36So how did you get close?
31:39How did you start getting close?
31:41During that time that I was hosting Game Plan without a new batch.
31:47We would hang out and go out drinking.
31:50What am I doing?
31:52We would go out drinking.
31:54We would chat and stuff.
31:56There was a time that we found ourselves.
31:58It was just the two of us.
31:59We were just chatting.
32:01Until, you know.
32:03We admitted it.
32:05Ah!
32:07It was a killing moment.
32:09On a Saturday night.
32:10It was, in fact, on a Saturday night.
32:14That's so cute.
32:16Paolo, you know.
32:18It's like I imagine you admitting to Pao.
32:20But Pao.
32:21Right?
32:22Because he's always very serious.
32:25Yes.
32:26We have different personalities.
32:29But he said that.
32:31I think I remember exactly the words.
32:33Of course, English.
32:35But he said that he likes me.
32:39So, yeah.
32:40We started going out together.
32:41It was such a big.
32:42It wasn't a drama in the office.
32:45But when we announced it.
32:47Other people were like,
32:49What's going on?
32:50And then Mon Castro got upset.
32:52Because he was like,
32:53Ew, you're like brother and sister.
32:55It's like that.
32:56Because we're a family.
32:58It's so gross.
33:00It's like that.
33:01But after a while, it was okay.
33:03How long were you boyfriend and girlfriend before you guys got married?
33:06I think 4 years or 5 years.
33:08We were saving up for our wedding.
33:09It was a simple wedding.
33:11We couldn't invite everybody.
33:12Only because we couldn't afford it.
33:14So, it was tough.
33:15Because I would go to work.
33:16Because there were people from the morning show that I didn't invite.
33:19Because it was such a simple wedding.
33:22It was almost like a DIY wedding.
33:24Eva or Celia.
33:26Our director at the church.
33:29And she made her own way.
33:32If you can see, she has a walkie-talkie.
33:34She found her own walkie-talkie.
33:36I don't know who she was talking to.
33:37To coordinate our wedding.
33:40It was really such a DIY wedding.
33:42It was so funny.
33:43It was so real.
33:44I loved it so much.
33:45It was so simple.
33:46How nice.
33:47This year is your 23rd?
33:5123rd.
33:522024.
33:5323rd.
33:54So, we've got 4 years till our silver.
33:55Wow!
33:56Imagine that.
33:57But you know what?
33:58The cutest part is, even if it's been more than 20 years,
34:01you're still sweet to each other.
34:03It's like you just got married.
34:05There are days that we're still sweet.
34:11But in a marriage, I think all married people would know,
34:14it's not always that you're on a high.
34:16It's like a high-low, high-low, high-low.
34:18And whenever we're on that high and we're very connected,
34:21I'm always grateful.
34:23I hope this lasts for a very, very long time.
34:26I love it.
34:27But it's the low parts also that allow you to...
34:31Of course, you'll wonder, how can I make this better?
34:34Or are there things that we can still say to each other
34:38in a better way?
34:39That's really how you learn how to be an even better couple.
34:44The parts that challenge you.
34:46For you, it's always good times.
34:48But the challenging part is, how can we do this better?
34:53How can we remain as a team, and a good team,
34:57and a good inspiration to our kids?
35:01When I look at the two of you, Paolo,
35:03you're like the original nonchalant and O.A.,
35:06in a good way.
35:07That nonchalant is funny.
35:10We also used that word in the morning show,
35:13me and Ivan.
35:15Don't say it's chalant.
35:16It should be nonchalant.
35:18That's what you call it.
35:19It's too chalant.
35:21This is chalant, chalant.
35:22We're chalant, we're chalant.
35:25It should be nonchalant.
35:28Just right.
35:29Yes, that's it.
35:30But true, true.
35:31I think Paolo warms up to people.
35:36Once he does, he's not just nonchalant, he's also chalant.
35:41He's also chalant.
35:42Especially when he's in the company of the guys he really likes a lot,
35:46like Drew, Aureliano, those guys he goes biking with.
35:50Some of them have become very good friends.
35:52But Paolo is also a deep-seated person.
35:56He likes to talk about life.
35:58When they're together, of course, they joke around.
36:03And I like seeing that because, generally, Paolo is a bit serious.
36:06So, when I see that Drew and Paolo joke around,
36:09it makes me laugh.
36:11But so now, Suzy, in the 20 plus years that you've been together,
36:16you've seen also how Paolo has evolved.
36:18First, you knew him as a friend, and then your boyfriend,
36:21and then your husband, and then now also as a father.
36:25How would you describe him as a dad, as a parent?
36:27Oh, he's so devoted.
36:28Super.
36:29Super.
36:30As in, he's the one who taught all of our three girls how to drive.
36:33As in, we didn't go to driving school.
36:34He's the one who taught us.
36:36Wow.
36:37As in, can you imagine the patience?
36:38Yes, he doesn't get angry or shout.
36:41And he doesn't get flustered, right?
36:43Because he's like that.
36:45Even as you remember him, nonchalant.
36:49Paolo should have posted a picture of him.
36:52Nonchalant.
36:55But it doesn't mean that deep inside, he's not flustered.
36:59But his outward projection, he's just chill.
37:03Okay, just stop, stop, stop, stop, yes, look first.
37:06He's like that.
37:07But when he comes home, for example,
37:09how are you?
37:10Is there cold water?
37:13Deep inside, he's also dry.
37:16But he's not reactive, expressive in that sense,
37:21which is what you mean if somebody's teaching you how to drive.
37:24He's not the type of person who gets flustered, right?
37:27So generally, you don't want your parent to teach you
37:30because they'll be so scared, right?
37:33So he's very devoted to the girls.
37:35He'll be with them.
37:36So he'll be the one who'll repeat to the group chat,
37:38Girls, you haven't driven in a long while.
37:40Let's go driving.
37:41And the girls will be like,
37:42Oh, okay, there's this pop-up.
37:44I don't know what they call it.
37:45Pop-up stores.
37:48Yes, for us, it's just called Changge.
37:51Changge.
37:53It's called a pop-up.
37:56So there's a pop-up.
37:58You can drive to the pop-up.
37:59Oh no, I said he'll spend money on that.
38:03Daddy's still broke.
38:06He's a girl dad.
38:08He's a girl one.
38:09It's cute because it's fun to be a girl dad, right?
38:13And a girl mom.
38:14Yeah, sure.
38:15Absolutely.
38:16I love hanging out with the girls.
38:18They're so quick-witted and they're so fast,
38:20quick on the uptake.
38:22Their humor is incredible.
38:24I love talking to the kids.
38:26They're so quick.
38:27I feel like, okay, I'll keep my mind sharp.
38:30Because you need to be able to keep up with their jokes.
38:33Yes, and it's like you have a group of kids.
38:36That's true.
38:37It's a group.
38:38And that's what they said when I kept getting pregnant year after year after year
38:42until we finally learned how to not get pregnant.
38:45So it doesn't matter if they're big.
38:48How can you not get pregnant?
38:50Sure enough, yes.
38:51Yes, because you have to keep up.
38:53I remember you saying that.
38:55You have to sign a contract with Pao that you can't get pregnant after Nela.
39:00I know.
39:01One of my friends said,
39:02why don't you go to a health center and ask how to not get pregnant?
39:10And I remember Tita Mel saying,
39:12Tita Mel, of course, you want a good posture, right?
39:15Of course, I always look good.
39:18Working out moms weren't that popular back then,
39:21so I just wanted to get fat.
39:23So I remember when she saw me.
39:25Tita Mel, you're also a special mention.
39:27You can also be heard here on Tita Mel's podcast.
39:29Oh yes, Tita Mel, please.
39:30Yes.
39:31And then I saw her.
39:32And she said,
39:33your posture is super.
39:34Oh my gosh.
39:35And she said,
39:36oh, you're pregnant again?
39:37And I said,
39:38oh no.
39:39I said,
39:40I'm sorry, Tita Mel.
39:43I'm sorry, Tita Mel.
39:44Your posture is super.
39:45Why is it not?
39:46No.
39:47She said,
39:48and a lot of people experience this, right?
39:51You are so blessed.
39:52You are so blessed to be able to bear children so easily.
39:56So don't say sorry.
39:57She said.
39:58And appreciate.
39:59Thank you, Tita Mel.
40:04And it's true.
40:05And it's true.
40:06Oh, Tita Mel has a bus bus.
40:08Yes.
40:09Yes.
40:10It's okay.
40:13Do you have a good cup or a bad cup?
40:15That's all, right?
40:17I feel like you both have a good cup.
40:20Yes.
40:21But it's also better to have a bad cup.
40:22Because it's rare.
40:23My siblings are kind.
40:24So it's like,
40:25I can't bear to have a bad cup here.
40:27I don't have anyone to scold, right?
40:29But when there are times like that.
40:31And then,
40:32it's like,
40:33they're like my siblings.
40:34Instead of my mother.
40:35So when I say,
40:36you have a good cup.
40:40Why are you even saying that?
40:41This is how it is, sir.
40:43I think,
40:44Palo's personality,
40:45because he's a bit strict about certain things.
40:48So when he says,
40:49you have to listen to everything.
40:52And of course,
40:53it's all in English.
40:54It's all in our group chat.
40:56And then,
40:57I don't scold him anymore because,
40:59I know,
41:00I remember how it feels
41:01when you're so scared
41:02because you did something wrong.
41:03Are you the PM who did something wrong when you were a kid?
41:05Or,
41:06are you the ideal child?
41:08It's like Attorney Gabby.
41:09The one who does that.
41:10Oh, Attorney.
41:11He's a special mention here.
41:12You have to listen.
41:14Yes,
41:15I'm old now.
41:17Yes,
41:18it's the opposite.
41:19It's like that feeling,
41:20you just got in the room,
41:21and you're still apologizing.
41:22Your heart is here,
41:23in your chest,
41:24because you're so nervous.
41:25So,
41:26generally,
41:27we already know that,
41:28from the time they said,
41:30whatever,
41:31in the group chat,
41:32they called,
41:33or whatever,
41:34they texted,
41:35they messaged,
41:36you know,
41:37it's been a while
41:38since you've seen each other.
41:39So,
41:40we won't scold him anymore.
41:41We'll just say,
41:42okay,
41:43we know,
41:44you acknowledged,
41:45you know that,
41:46you won't scold him anymore.
41:47It's like that.
41:48Aww,
41:49that's nice.
41:50That's why, Suzy,
41:51it's so nice to see all your posts,
41:52even your solo,
41:53your couple pics,
41:54and your family pic.
41:55I know, right?
41:56It's full of good vibes.
41:57It's like I can feel
41:58the good vibes
41:59coming from your photos.
42:01And,
42:02I just want to say
42:03thank you, Suzy,
42:04because you took time out
42:05to be with us today.
42:06Of course,
42:07my pleasure.
42:08There are always
42:09a million things to do.
42:10You do all your,
42:11you're the one
42:12who pays your taxes.
42:13Before,
42:14until I got hired.
42:15And now,
42:16we have the same account.
42:17And,
42:18especially,
42:19you two again.
42:20Oh,
42:21Aileen,
42:22Aileen,
42:23listen to the episode.
42:24Aileen,
42:25I'm checking
42:26your Spotify.
42:27I used to do it.
42:28I used to do it before,
42:29yeah.
42:30And,
42:31you do your own groceries.
42:32Yes.
42:33You do,
42:34you make your list,
42:35and stuff.
42:36Yeah.
42:37So,
42:38I know you do all those things.
42:39I cut my own grass,
42:40as in,
42:41everything.
42:42Everything.
42:43But,
42:44I was surprised
42:45when you said,
42:46cut your own grass.
42:47I love it.
42:48I saw the picture,
42:49I was like,
42:50wow,
42:51Suzy can do it.
42:52Yeah.
42:53Doesn't it hurt your legs?
42:54It hurts.
42:55It hurts my back,
42:56it hurts my arms.
42:57Yeah.
42:58But,
42:59before,
43:00when we had a garden,
43:01when I was young,
43:02I really wanted to do it.
43:03But,
43:04I was young.
43:05So,
43:06you can't just cut it
43:07because it's big.
43:08So,
43:09my mom would be like,
43:11I've got my own scissors.
43:13I just didn't know
43:14if I could sustain it.
43:15Because,
43:16after this,
43:17by the time I came back,
43:18it grew again.
43:19So,
43:20I just didn't know
43:21if I could sustain it.
43:22But,
43:23as a chore,
43:24I love doing it.
43:25Wow.
43:26But seriously,
43:27Suzy,
43:28thank you for
43:29this surprise conversation.
43:30I had so much fun
43:31talking to you.
43:32You know,
43:33I was looking at the timer,
43:34we've been talking for so long.
43:35I feel like it's only been 10 minutes.
43:36As in,
43:37it just flew by.
43:38I missed it so much.
43:39I missed seeing you
43:40in the corridor.
43:41We were so surprised.
43:42As in,
43:43we were like this.
43:44We were super chit-chatting.
43:45Oh, but Suzy,
43:46before we let you go,
43:47we have a game for you.
43:48It's a surprise game.
43:49Oh my.
43:50It's a surprise.
43:51I'll read the mechanics first.
43:52Okay.
43:53Okay,
43:54the title of this,
43:55oh,
43:56the title is so pretty.
43:58Okay,
43:59the title is,
44:00My Entry.
44:01As in,
44:02Entrata?
44:03My Entry
44:04or No Entry.
44:05So,
44:06in other words,
44:07given a chance,
44:08you just have to answer
44:09if it's a game or not.
44:10Or not.
44:11Okay.
44:12But it's My Entry
44:13or No Entry.
44:14No Entry.
44:15Okay, okay.
44:16Okay, first,
44:17Mukbang Exotic Food Challenge.
44:19No Entry.
44:20Even just the taste of exotic food?
44:22It's rare.
44:23Even just the taste of mukbang?
44:24It's rare.
44:25Okay.
44:26Never?
44:27As in,
44:28even for a shoot,
44:29you didn't taste anything?
44:30We had to do that for game plan.
44:31So,
44:32Sawa,
44:33Bayawak,
44:34the usual.
44:35Yeah,
44:36stuff like that.
44:37When I didn't have to do it anymore.
44:39As in,
44:40I was like,
44:41Thank God.
44:42I don't enjoy
44:43challenges like that.
44:44So,
44:45the survivors said,
44:46No way.
44:47That's why I didn't join
44:48this show.
44:49As in,
44:50Yeah.
44:51Okay.
44:52It's a good thing you joined then?
44:53They were asking me before,
44:54but I was always
44:55either pregnant
44:56or breastfeeding.
44:57So,
44:58I said,
44:59I need to stop
45:00every three hours
45:01to pump my milk.
45:02Is that okay?
45:03They said,
45:04No.
45:05Yes, I'm out.
45:06That's a perfect excuse.
45:07Sorry,
45:08that was an extra challenge.
45:09Okay.
45:10A perfect excuse.
45:11Yes.
45:12How about,
45:13TikTokerist?
45:14Oh my.
45:15If you want to join TikTok,
45:16can you do it?
45:17Do you have a TikTok account?
45:18I have an account,
45:19only because
45:20my friend from UH said,
45:21you should open it.
45:22Okay.
45:23But I don't really
45:24post there.
45:25I'm tired of IG
45:26and FB.
45:27I'm busy.
45:28Yeah,
45:29actually.
45:30Right?
45:31Enough posting.
45:32That's a big posting.
45:33Yeah,
45:34that's a big posting.
45:35That's a big posting.
45:36Yeah.
45:37How about,
45:38oh,
45:39how about you're
45:40having an advocacy?
45:41Oh,
45:42what's the other one?
45:43Yes, entry.
45:44Entry.
45:45What's the other one?
45:46My entry.
45:47My entry.
45:48My entry.
45:49Yes.
45:50Do you have
45:51existing advocacies?
45:52I support organizations.
45:53But what's special to me
45:54is
45:55Waves for Water.
45:56Because it's very basic,
45:57water.
45:59So,
46:00if I had time,
46:01that would be something
46:02that I'd like to
46:03pivot more actively with.
46:04How about
46:05fitness journey?
46:06Oh,
46:07you don't answer to this.
46:08Oh,
46:09my entry, of course.
46:10For life.
46:11But,
46:12this one,
46:13I have to ask you,
46:14I didn't ask this earlier
46:15because I'm sure
46:16so many of our listeners
46:17want to know
46:18what your fitness
46:19journey or
46:20fitness routine is.
46:21So,
46:22what's your
46:23fitness routine?
46:24So,
46:25my fitness routine
46:26is
46:28Oh,
46:29I've been doing
46:30barre 3 classes
46:31which is
46:32original
46:33identification.
46:34It's a combination
46:35of Pilates,
46:36yoga,
46:37and ballet.
46:38So,
46:39the barre
46:40means the
46:41ballet barre.
46:42So,
46:43we use that
46:44for resistance,
46:45et cetera.
46:46You've never
46:47tried it,
46:48right?
46:49You know,
46:50because
46:51that's what
46:52you're doing.
46:53So,
46:54I tried it.
46:55I tried it
46:56Oh,
46:57it's so hard.
46:58Because the shakes,
46:59right?
47:00You really get the shakes.
47:01I can't do it.
47:02Super.
47:03And what I love about it
47:04is that
47:05after 14 years,
47:06I think,
47:07of doing barre 3,
47:08it's still hard for me.
47:09So,
47:10can you imagine
47:11going to a workout
47:12and it's still hard for me.
47:13So,
47:14I feel like I'm
47:15constantly challenged.
47:16So,
47:17I do that.
47:18I do that.
47:19Maybe I try to do
47:20barre 3 maybe
47:21three times a week
47:22and then I'm adding
47:23a bit more cardio.
47:24So,
47:26I get to smell
47:27fresh air,
47:28see the trees and stuff.
47:29So,
47:30that's what I do.
47:31So,
47:32I try to do
47:33cardio.
47:34I try to do
47:35barre 3
47:36which is a combination
47:37of a lot of things.
47:38It's also weights
47:39but low weights
47:40and also
47:41walking.
47:42More walking
47:43because I think
47:44as we've seen online
47:45more and more of,
47:46they see that
47:47walking is very important
47:48especially after meals.
47:49That's why
47:50when we go abroad
47:51to Japan,
47:52to Korea,
47:53whatever,
47:54why do you eat so much
47:55and when you go home,
47:56you get skinnier?
47:57Because
47:58you just walk.
47:59You don't stay at the restaurant
48:00the whole day
48:01and eat chicken.
48:02You walk again.
48:03That's why
48:04we have a small
48:05treadmill.
48:06So,
48:07me and our kids
48:08we take turns there.
48:09After a while,
48:10we walk for 20 minutes.
48:11Anyway,
48:12you're on your phone anyway.
48:13You don't know
48:1420 minutes.
48:15You can watch TV.
48:16Yeah,
48:17absolutely.
48:18But definitely,
48:19if you can't run yet,
48:20if you're worried
48:21about your knees,
48:22just walking.
48:24Sometimes,
48:25I feel lazy
48:26to run on the treadmill
48:27because
48:28it's tiring.
48:29But if you just walk,
48:30it doesn't feel
48:31as tiring
48:32but you're still burning anyway.
48:33Absolutely.
48:34And you can get work done
48:35also.
48:36Remember when we ran
48:37in UP together
48:38before PE
48:39that one time?
48:42We had a fitness journey
48:43during PE.
48:44I didn't know
48:45how to run.
48:46Yeah, right?
48:47How many times
48:48did we run?
48:50I think we ran
48:51twice that time.
48:52Not bad.
48:53No, not bad.
48:57We should do it again.
48:58And I remember,
48:59wait,
49:00because the fun runs,
49:02I think we were MCs
49:03and we weren't actually
49:04running, right?
49:05Yes.
49:06Something like that.
49:07Yes.
49:08But if you can,
49:09if you can run,
49:10it's fun,
49:11especially when you can
49:12run outdoors.
49:14Yes.
49:15That's why
49:16Suzy has inspired
49:17a lot of people
49:18to become fit.
49:19Camila,
49:20I interviewed her before.
49:21Camila Prats.
49:22And she said,
49:23you were the one
49:24who inspired her.
49:25Now, she's my inspiration
49:26because she's thinner
49:27than me.
49:28It's like you're
49:29both the same.
49:30Camila is solid.
49:32That's how it works,
49:33right?
49:34Even people
49:35who I may have inspired,
49:36when I see them posted
49:37also,
49:38and I see that
49:39they're working out,
49:40I haven't worked out
49:41for the day.
49:42She's the one
49:43who worked out,
49:44so it's fine.
49:45We inspire each other
49:46like that.
49:47Okay.
49:48And how about this one,
49:49last?
49:50By entry
49:51or no entry?
49:52Extra challenge.
49:54Are you up
49:55for challenges?
49:56Honestly,
49:57no entry now.
49:58We used to do that
49:59so much in game plan before.
50:00I'm so scared
50:01for my life.
