00:00Hi everyone, I'm Beedus. Today, I'm going to give you a brief introduction to
00:07abacus math. So, let's get started.
00:13Hello, my dear friends. My name is Beedus. In this video, I will introduce the
00:20Japanese abacus or Soroban. You will learn about the main parts of the
00:25Japanese abacus. You will also know how to represent numbers on it.
00:35Hello, everyone. This is the Japanese abacus. The main parts of it are as
00:42follows. We have this border which is called the frame. So, this is the frame of
00:49the abacus. Then, we got some columns. These columns are called rods. On each
00:56rod, you will find four lower beads and one upper bead. And then, we got also a
01:04divider line that separates the lower beads from the upper beads. This divider
01:09line is called the bar. On this bar, you will find some points. These points are
01:17column indicators. For example, the point in the middle of the abacus signals that
01:24this rod is the units rod. So, it's called the unit point. So, if this is the units
01:31rod, so the rod to the left of it will be the tens rod. Then, hundreds rod. Then, this
01:42is the thousands rod and so on. Again, units rod is in the middle. This is the
01:48tens rod, hundreds rod and thousands rod and so on. What about the other rods to
01:56the right side? These are all decimal rods.
02:04So, you will reset the abacus like this using your thumb and index fingers. Okay?
02:11You will use the thumb to count the lower beads. You will use the index finger
02:18for the upper beads. We said that the units rod is the one on the middle. So,
02:24this is how you count one. This is how you represent two. This is three. This is
02:30four and this is five. So, you notice that the lower beads each has a value of one.
02:41While the upper bead has a value of five. Okay? So, this is five and this is how
02:47you make six. This is how you make seven. It's five and two. This is how you make
02:52eight and this is how you make nine. To make ten, you will reset the units rod
02:58and move one bead up on the tens rod. Okay? So, this is ten, twenty, thirty, forty
03:09and fifty. This is sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety and to make hundred, you will move
03:16to the hundreds rod. Okay? Now, let's reset.
03:24Let's sum up today's lesson. The main parts of the abacus are the frame, the
03:33rods, the upper beads, the lower beads, the bar and the points. The most important of
03:41which is the unit point which is in the middle of the bar. This is how you
03:49represent zero. This is one, two, three, four, five, this is six, seven, eight, nine and ten. So, that's all for today.
