The government said it is targeting a collection of 10,000 genomic sequences through the MyGenom project to create an accurate reference for local genetics to enhance health delivery. The project was launched in Shah Alam, Selangor on Thursday (Aug 29).

00:00to join hands as a symbol to the handshake mechanism
00:04between science, technology and innovation
00:07as well as the Ministry of Health of Malaysia.
00:10Today is the launch of the MyGenome program
00:13which is a joint effort between MOSTY and KKM
00:19and specifically between NIH and NIBM.
00:24So this is a program where we do genome sequencing
00:29to help us in precision medicine
00:35where we can do a faster diagnosis
00:38and a more accurate treatment.
00:41In addition, it is important for us to have this genome sequencing data
00:49because in Malaysia, we have a population of various ethnicities and cultures.
00:57This will provide a very rich and multidimensional data
01:10instead of only referring to Caucasians or other places or other populations.
01:22So it is very important for us to have our own genome data as a reference.
01:30You mentioned that there are a total of 10,000 samples left.
01:34When will this be completed?
01:36We have just entered the first phase, which will be completed in 2025.
01:43Our target is to get 2,500 samples.
01:47After that, we will ask RMK13 to continue this project to reach 10,000.
01:56So the first phase is 2,500 or 3,500?
01:59Okay, 3,500 samples.
02:01After that, we will do all the analysis
02:06and expect from there, we can get 2,500.
02:11Because we need normal samples from 3,500
02:15which must have chronic diseases.
02:20So we estimate that from 3,500, we will be able to get 2,500 normal samples.
02:29So 2 samples, normal and chronic diseases.
02:33Our target now is to get a reference point or reference sample.
02:38It must be a normal sample that does not have any diseases.
02:42So at the end of the day, is this data useful for the current population or the next population?
02:46No, this data is a data that is a genome of the country's population that remains.
02:58It is a reference to the normal genome data.
03:08So it will be forever.
03:11Once you have established a baseline, it will remain like that.
03:18You can understand, right?
03:18It does not change with the population.
03:21This will be our reference data for genomics studies.
