00:09to teach the students who need to pursue math and reading.

00:15But when will that be fulfilled?

00:17Tina Panganiban Perez was able to find out.

00:24In a study by the World Bank,

00:2610-year-old Filipino children who are not able to read

00:32or who do not understand how to read

00:34were excluded from the program.

00:36This was solved by House Resolution 1805

00:40by the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture Chair Roman Romulo

00:44and former Negros Occidental 3rd District Representative

00:48and now Tested Director General Francisco Benitez.

00:52They advocated to suspend the regular academic program of the DepEd

00:57for 8 to 12 weeks

00:59to focus on reading and mathematics.

01:03Based on all assessment tests that we have seen

01:06and all studies, surveys,

01:09we really need to make intervention programs

01:13during the regular academic calendar.

01:17Not after school, not just in the summer.

01:21The DepEd is now conducting consultations in different sectors about this.

01:26There were some reservations expressed about the suspension of the academic program.

01:31However, there was willingness to implement an 8-week program

01:36provided that the program is implemented in the first quarter of 2025.

01:42According to Romulo, they wanted to make an 8-week program

01:46for all 25 million grades 1 to 12 students.

01:50But due to the lack of teachers,

01:52the DepEd planned to implement this program for some grade 7 to 10 students.

01:58For the rest of the students that are not included in the 1.6 million PISA target,

02:04we'll reiterate to the field the conduct of remediation classes.

02:09Either we pull out students from classes, those students from classes,

02:14or we add that time after classes.

02:18After 8 weeks, there will be an assessment for the students.

02:23If they are still having a hard time in reading and mathematics,

02:27they will continue to be helped.

02:29And if they are still having a hard time,

02:30they will continue to the next level.

02:32But when it comes to the next level, we will continue the intervention.
