00:05and add to that blood venom from 3 out of the most potent pit vipers
00:09here in the United States.
00:10We have a medic that is going to stick me with a needle
00:13and draw out these 8 vials of blood.
00:15And right now I'm feeling very-very nervous
00:17and a little squeamish and I might pass out during this process.
00:21Okay. Here we go. Giving my blood for science.

00:46This serpentarium is home to several of the world's most dangerous snakes
00:50and earlier today, I assisted in milking the venom of three pit vipers
00:54that are frequently encountered in the Eastern United States.

01:46today what we are going to do is take 8 vials of my blood
01:48We are going to create a control
01:50and we are going to mix venom in 3 different vials
01:53and show you exactly what happens
01:54I know seems like I got to the point already
01:57I am only prolonging this because I am so squeamish around needles

02:06when it comes to sticking a needle into my arm

03:56Sice this mix box is a backup, and we've got the entire experiment setup.
04:01We've got three vials that contain copperhead, water moccasin, and eastern dime back venom.
04:06Eventually, that blood is going to trickle down this board that we've created.
04:09But before we get there, let's talk about these venoms and why they''re so potentially dangerous.
04:15Okay, so Coyote, all three of these snakes are causing you to bleed, cause you to hemorrhage.
04:20And hemorrhaging is dangerous for a host of reasons.

13:48And the cottonmouth venom in relationship to the control, tough to say.
13:52But maybe we're seeing some anticoagulant activity there.
13:55Maybe.
13:56So here we go.
13:57I've got the eastern diamondback venom in my blood there.

14:11Again guys, flat tip needles.
14:13Even if I were to prick myself with a needle with venom, that is just like suffering envenomation.
14:19Oh yeah, look at that.
14:20Look how thin that blood is.
14:21That pulls up way easier than the copperhead or the moccasin.
14:26Wow, look how watery that is.
14:28That's crazy.
14:30What does human blood look like once it's been envenomated with eastern diamondback rattlesnake venom?
14:37Here we go.
14:38One, two, three.
14:43Oh, there is a little bit of coagulation there.
14:45Wow, look at that.
14:46Some significant clotting.
14:48And remember, on this one coyote, eastern diamondback venom, we think there are both anticoagulant and procoagulant activity happening.
14:56But that's interesting.
14:58Okay, well there we have it.
15:00Between the control, the copperhead, the moccasin, and the eastern diamondback rattlesnake, visually across the board, it looks like there's quite a bit of difference, right?
15:07Even with the control, I don't see any speckling in the blood as compared to these three.
15:11But from your expert perspective, Carl, what is it that we're really seeing here?
15:16I mean, it looks like a horror film, but it's tough to tell with the naked eye.
15:20Yeah.
15:21So, Coyote, you know, I think we need to point out that this experiment is a really crude experiment.
15:27You know, what we're seeing, we're kind of speculating a little bit and based a little bit on what we know about these given snake venoms.
15:34But this really needs to be done under a microscope in a really controlled setting where we don't have this time difference going on.
15:41And we're not sure, you know, that the amount of venom being used is exact to get a real sense of this.
15:46But I think it's safe to say that what's happening here, whether or not we can see it with the naked eye, is serious, catastrophic damage on a cellular level.
15:56And I think for everybody out there watching, not only did I hear you say that we need to do this again,
16:02which means there will be a sequel to this video, but that the big takeaway is the pit vipers in the United States have the potential to be very dangerous.
16:10This is not a species you would ever want to interact with in the wild.
16:13And for everybody out there that's asked, Coyote, will you get bitten by a venomous snake?
16:17The answer is no.
16:18You guys can see that this is, again, catastrophic.
16:22If you're bitten by one of these snakes, it is a medical emergency.
16:25With all of our content, we want to encourage the viewers to admire these animals from a safe distance.
16:29Don't try to kill them.
16:30Don't try to catch them.
16:31Don't ever experiment with yourself to see what would happen if you tangled one of these snakes.
16:35No question.
16:36I think that's an excellent synopsis.

17:07And it's probably accurate to say that each and every one of these bites happens by accident.
17:13Some species, like the copperhead, aren't likely to kill you.
17:18But a full-on envenomation from an eastern diamondback is certain to take your life without the administration of anti-venom.
17:26Carl and Mara perform thousands of milkings every year, risking their own lives just in case you were unfortunately bitten by one of these slithering reptiles.
17:35Yet that doesn't mean you should be afraid of snakes.
17:38Almost all bites come as a result of humans trying to move, harass, or kill one of these animals.
17:46The best course of action is to always respect snakes from a safe distance, ensuring that you do not have a catastrophic interaction.
