Things get heated as Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa talks to the media for the first time since his comments on the Dan LeBatard show about his relationship with former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores.
Transcript
00:00Obviously, this is the first time I think he's talking since the Brian Flores thing
00:03blew up again last week. And then, you know, whatever, you know, unless he tells Brian
00:10Flores to go bleep himself again, which is not going to happen. If anything, I bet you,
00:15he's going to be like, ah, you know, I don't feel bad because two is a nice guy.
00:18Calling somebody a terrible person. It's kind of rough.
00:20It is rough. It is rough.
00:22Because you don't know that man for real, for real like that.
00:25I mean, guess what?
00:27That's what he was with you.
00:28Vlad, I can tell you, I can say this, right? It shouldn't have to be explained.
00:35But I don't know what your relationship, I don't know.
00:38Two, I don't know what Brian relationship if he have a wife and kids.
00:42He does.
00:43You know, OK, he don't know that relationship.
00:45Only thing he knows is the relationship he's had with him.
00:48And according to him and his relationship, he's a terrible person.
00:52There's nothing wrong with that.
00:54I don't care.
00:56I can't call you.
00:57See, here's the thing, Leroy.
00:58I just hear what you're saying.
01:00But where I'm from, I'm still a man.
01:04And you calling me a terrible person to the national media.
01:07You don't know me.
01:08I still got a, you know, I still got a wife.
01:10I still got a family.
01:11You know why they don't fly with you?
01:12You know why they don't fly with me?
01:14Here's why.
01:16Because there's athletes that can sign 300 autographs and dismiss that next person.
01:23And that next person going to call that athlete a jackass.
01:25Right.
01:25And what I'm saying is you can call me a terrible coach.
01:29You could call me a terrible communicator.
01:32Explain to the public I'm a terrible person.
01:35Yeah, if my interaction with you warranted that, then I'm just calling it from my.
01:48I don't know how you treat your wife and your kids.
01:50I don't know how you treat this guy, that guy.
01:53It's my, it's through my.
01:55The thing that was fascinating about it too, is Flores didn't really buck against a lot
02:00of what Tua said.
02:01Like, right.
02:03It kind of felt like he said that hurt.
02:04Like he said, he's a human, but he also like said he grew a lot.
02:08So I think he really apologized.
02:10No, right.
02:12I mean, like he said, he wished at least the fakest of people would say this.
02:18Look, that wasn't my intent.
02:20If I did do that, I apologize.
02:22I tried not to carry myself that way.
02:25Or whatever, the company line, right?
02:27He didn't even go that far, right?
02:29He say, I'm human.
02:32He did everything but apologize for Tua, which makes him even worse.
02:36You understand?
02:37It makes him even worse.
02:39Because wait, you looking at it from the standpoint of how Tua made Brian Flores feel
02:46in front of his people, right?
02:49Right.
02:50But let me ask you a question.
02:51How the hell you think Brian Flores made Tua look in front of his peers?
02:57The same way I would think he would make the other peers feel the same way as that coach.
03:01Because here's my thing with that.
03:03Here's the thing, Leroy.
03:04I understand.
03:04If there's one player on a roster that you should have a relationship with, it would
03:08be the face of the franchise, which would be the quarterback.
03:11But you also got 52 other gentlemen that you got to coach.
03:14Don't matter.
03:14Don't matter.
03:15Your job is more dependent on that one player than anybody else on that field.
03:20Plus, I mean, it's already been revealed.
03:22He did a lot of this to other players, too.
03:24A lot of young players, especially.
03:26Right.
03:26And that's what I'm saying.
03:27So it wasn't like he was single.
03:29And they probably all think he's a terrible person, too.
03:31And there was probably 44 other people who probably thought he was a good person as well.
03:34But the thing that's different with the Tua thing is you guys, they left Tua out to dry.
03:38Wilkins loves him.
03:39You don't think.
03:40But wait, see, see this.
03:42This is where I get where you're coming from and how that's harsh or whatever.
03:48But do you understand this man was almost single handedly responsible for ruin to his
03:54career?
03:58Right.
03:59How is how is like?
04:02No.
04:02So for the same reasons why you say, oh, we got to go to blows if you call me that in
04:07front of my family or whatever.
04:08Think you got a guy in your life that's supposed to be one of the people helping you.
04:14And he's damn near ruined your career.
04:18But I think that's the thing, like, you know, with the it's not like he said, quote,
04:22Brian Flores is a terrible person, like he's doing an explanation of the difference between
04:26both of them.
04:27But I bet even if you want to play that game, like he I get like, I think, too, probably
04:33will.
04:33I think knowing, you know, to as as like the way that he does handle himself.
04:38He probably got caught up in the answer.
04:39I bet you he does walk it back somewhat.
04:41I bet you he does.
04:42I don't have no.
04:43I would be everything he said.
04:45OK, but you saw two is a good enough here.
04:48This will clarify it right now.
04:49OK, it was out of character for two and he probably was pissed off about what Brian Flores
04:56did to him and he'll probably walk it back.
04:59Right.
04:59And say, look, I probably like, you know, I was really upset with what happened.
05:04I probably shouldn't have went there.
05:05Right.
05:06But Brian Flores didn't do that to him, which makes it even worse.
05:10You feel me?
05:11I feel worse that he didn't even try to apologize.
05:15He didn't.
05:15He just talked about other stuff, but never actually apologized to tour.
05:20So that makes him even worse person.
05:22And they really did leave him out to dry.
05:24Right.
05:25Those whole couple of years when the rumors were going on, you did feel bad for him.
05:29You did.
05:30Like, they're like, they were treating to a terribly.
05:33Hey, if two walks it back, is that more of an indication of what kind of person he is?
05:40And the fact that Brian, the fact, wait, the fact that Brian Flores never came out
05:45and apologized to tour.
05:48Is that evident of what kind of person he is?
05:53Because guess what?
05:54It was it was I promise you this.
05:57It was a lot easier for Brian Flores to get another job.
06:02Then to do it.
06:03Then for two to end up where he is today.
06:05Let me ask you a question.
06:06Do you think you think tour would be able to handle your coach?
06:10Belichick?
06:11No, your college coach.
06:14He had Nick Saban.
06:17I'm saying, would he be right?
06:18Yes.
06:19Yes.
06:19Would be able to handle it.
06:20Okay.
06:21You think you would have been able to handle Belichick?
06:24Yeah.
06:24He had Nick Saban.
06:26Okay.
06:26So my questioning is this.
06:29Yeah.
06:29He had those type of guys, but there's certain blood you can be.
06:33There's a difference in being hard on a player.
06:36And being counterproductive with a player.
06:39There's another thing.
06:40This is another thing, too, that I don't understand with people like the thing that
06:43isn't that was beating down was not, hey, you're not good at quarterback.
06:48It was that they were actively trying to replace him week in and week out.
06:53And then they go into the media, Vlad, and they lie.
06:56Okay.
06:57Then they lie.
06:58And then they make him go face the media.
07:00And that's nasty work.
07:01Like, that's nothing to do with coaching styles or that he got yelled at.
07:06Like, also, then on top of it, he's allegedly getting text.
07:09Don't blow this.
07:10Don't suck.
07:10Like, that's not coaching.
07:12Okay.
07:12Now, that part, I'm not giving sources at fault, but I feel like everyone's at fault
07:18because somebody's getting here.
07:21Hey, when he's a coach to start losing, supposedly, right?
07:26Hey, we want you to lose.
07:27Then, hey, can you bring a certain GOAT status quarterback to a yacht so we can have a conversation?
07:34Oh, hey, there's some, you know, creep in Houston that wants to get traded, wants to leave.
07:41Hey, is there any chance for us to get it?
07:43So everybody involved.
07:44Yeah.
07:44The organization definitely has everyone.
07:46Everybody.
07:47Wait, except Tua because he was the recipient of all that stuff.
07:53Okay.
07:54But that being said, you got to grow a little ball.
07:57So you got to go.
07:58You got, you got to be a little thick.
07:59You got to be a little tougher.
08:00You got to be a little tougher.
08:03Hey, can I just tell you something?
08:05Vlad, Vlad, Vlad, Vlad.
08:07Coaches have yelled at me.
08:09Coaches have yelled at me.
08:10Coaches have told me that I need to do better, but they never told me I was garbage.
08:17Okay.
08:18That is not the coach's job is to get the most out of their talent.
08:22And you know what, Leroy?
08:25I agree with you, but he was getting the most out of his talent because you know why?
08:30Other than that first season, he had winning records.
08:33And one thing I can honestly say about those Miami Dolphins teams come December and January.
08:38Yeah.
08:38But he, but he also, but they were winning December and January going on the road,
08:43going to cold weather places and, and beating teams.
08:46That's what I remember.
08:48Nah, not in Tennessee.
08:49They didn't.
08:49I remember them going to new England, cause the new England, the number one seed.
08:53Yeah.
08:54New England was, was New England was going to be the one?
08:56No.
08:56Yeah.
08:56New England would have been the one seed.
08:58You're talking about the tank year.
09:01They would have been the one.
09:01Yeah.
09:02You're talking about the tank year with Ryan Fitzpatrick.
09:03Okay.
09:04And then what happened the following year?
09:05The next year.
09:06The next year they weren't good.
09:07Cause Tom Brady was like on the outs.
09:08That was the breakup.
09:09But which is probably why he didn't want it.
09:11But the Dolphins records in December and January under Brian Flores is five games.
09:16I understand that.
09:17But he also had seven game losing streaks in there too.
09:19Vlad, like you like this whole idea of like, that's the weirdness about these coaches.
09:23Like if I want, if, if I really wanted to have two coaches for the Dolphins,
09:27I would have McDaniel coach from September to November.
09:29And then have Flores coach from November.
09:31Tag team match.
09:32Tag team rough, a tag team coaching because they tried, they tried that.
09:36And, um, you know where they did that Chicago with buddy Ryan and, uh, Mike Dicker.
09:44And guys, you gotta understand my final point about this.
09:46I missed, he was back to tour and he was back to a couple of guys,
09:50but maybe he was coaching everybody.
09:53He had to change his coaching philosophy, but he's also got to coach 52 other players.
09:56I understand.
09:57It's a strong thing, but I think the thing is like over for two to sit on it for two years.
10:02Basically.
10:02And Brian Flores dealing with that day in and day out for two years.
10:07And to, uh, this is like the one thing like to having his moment after,
10:11yeah, you said I sucked and I got a, and I got a franchise contract.
10:16You know, maybe Stuart still got accomplishments.
10:18He has to, he has to go.
10:19We still have to see that too.
10:20It can be the guy that leads the Dolphins to key wins, but it was still an important
10:25summer for him.
10:26He did hit a huge professional goal that this guy probably never thought that he was going to reach.
10:30And yeah, he's peacocking a little bit.
10:33Was it strong?
10:34Yeah, it was strong.
10:35I bet you to guess the two has been told worse stuff from, from flow.
10:39I would say, I bet you he's been told worse stuff from, from, from Nick Saban,
10:44but here's the deal, right?
10:46In order to feel that way, you got to feel this coming from a certain place.
10:50Like I've had coaches yelling me, but I always knew those coaches had their best interest
10:54in my performance, right?
10:56They wanted me to do as well.
10:58Right.
10:59When somebody says the same thing, you know, that person don't really like you,
11:03it hits home different.
11:04And you could say he's coaching a lot of guys like that.
11:07But when a guy does not like you and he says, he's just coaching you hard.
11:12It comes from a different place.
11:14It comes from a place of hate and not out of love.
11:19You see what I'm saying?
11:20And so, yeah, if he deemed that as that guy being a terrible person, because it came from
11:27a place of dislike and not a place of production or love, then I don't have a problem with it.
11:34Because he is the coach.
11:36He is the guy that's supposed to get the most out of all of his players.
