Plot:
A Los Angeles psychiatrist testifies for the prosecution in the trial of an accused child molester. Not long afterwards a detective he knows comes to him for help. 00:00:00The
00:00:20accused has no previous criminal record and there's no evidence he's a danger to the community
00:00:25or will flee this court's jurisdiction. On the other hand, the crime with which he stands
00:00:33charged is indeed a serious one. Bail is set at $250,000.
00:00:40Mr. Hickle, how about a statement? I am innocent.
00:00:47Mrs. Hickle, is your husband innocent? Mrs. Hickle, this way please. Mrs. Hickle?
00:00:54You're next.
00:00:56Mrs. Hickle, what about your responsibility as a director to take part in any of the activities?
00:01:00Mrs. Hickle, Mrs. Hickle, come on.
00:01:02Sir. Dr. Delaware, Dr. Delaware, what effect do you think the release of Hickle will have on the children?
00:01:07No comment. Is it true you'll testify before the prosecution?
00:01:10No comment. Dr. Delaware, just tell us something.
00:01:13They let him go. It's just on bail, Mr. Anderson.
00:01:15How could they do this after what he's done?
00:01:17That's to have done. This is Detective Scripps.
00:01:19You think he didn't do it? Is that what you're saying? Is that what the cops think?
00:01:22Nobody is saying that, Mr. Anderson. My God, Marianne can't flee.
00:01:25She's terrified, and now with him out.
00:01:27Please, this is not the time to talk. Can you come to my office Friday? We'll talk there. Please.
00:01:32The accused child molester, Stuart Hickle, was released today on $250,000 bail.
00:01:37I don't believe this. Where does he get that kind of money?
00:01:40Turns out he's rich. Don't worry about it.
00:01:42Don't worry about it? You don't have to work the kids day after day.
00:01:45I mean, entire families are coming apart.
00:01:48What are you going to do with the kids?
00:01:49No comment.
00:01:50What are you going to do?
00:01:51I am innocent.
00:01:52I mean, they should have at least referred the guy for treatment for guts.
00:01:56That usually comes after conviction, if he's convicted.
00:02:00Let me in.
00:02:01We haven't even gone to trial.
00:02:03Their parents told them. I'll tell you one thing.
00:02:06I know some people are going to be very sorry that they persecuted me.
00:02:10Turn the channel. Turn it off, please.
00:02:12Alex, you want to lighten up?
00:02:15Private, would you mind?
00:02:20You know what I wonder about? I wonder about the wife.
00:02:22We can never pin anything on her.
00:02:24We're going to know if she's... Where are you going?
00:02:27Out into the night to contemplate what I do and why I do it.
00:02:31Ah, the joys of confronting human misery.
00:02:34Kind of like surfing in a cesspool.
00:02:36Alex, do yourself a favor. Take a break. Go home.
00:02:41I've got work to do at the office.
00:02:56I've got to go.
00:03:26I've got to go.
00:03:56I've got to go.
00:04:27No, no.
00:04:49Sorry about that.
00:04:50I thought you didn't have nightmares anymore.
00:04:53I don't.
00:04:57Come here.
00:04:59Alex.
00:05:02What do you want for breakfast?
00:05:27Are there any clean towels?
00:05:29Without it.
00:05:30Alex, what's happening to this house?
00:05:32No clean towels, no soap in the shower?
00:05:36I've told you before, I don't take peanut butter on mine.
00:05:39I'm so glad you can make it for breakfast.
00:05:41That is disgusting.
00:05:42Do you have anything that's edible around here?
00:05:45Alex, I'm getting you a cleaning lady, and I'm not taking no for an answer.
00:05:48What can I do for you, Milo?
00:05:50Anyone special?
00:05:52An acquaintance.
00:05:53Where's your hair dryer?
00:05:54Broken.
00:05:55Oh, Alex.
00:05:56Alex.
00:05:59Hi.
00:06:00Hi.
00:06:02If we wait for him to introduce us, we'll part strangers.
00:06:05Milo.
00:06:06Hi, Lisa.
00:06:07Nice to meet you.
00:06:08You too.
00:06:09You need a keeper.
00:06:10Is that a proposal?
00:06:11Are you kidding?
00:06:12It's tough enough just being your friend.
00:06:13Amen.
00:06:14Excuse me.
00:06:15Certainly.
00:06:18You've been hiding something from me, Alex?
00:06:21What do you want?
00:06:23Couldn't this just be a social call?
00:06:25No, you got that bloodhound luck.
00:06:28With such intuitive powers, you should have been a shrink.
00:06:32Actually, I could use your help.
00:06:41Oh, that's great.
00:06:42That's just what I need.
00:06:43I'm late for the hospital.
00:06:48Oh, my God.
00:06:49Police business.
00:06:50Sorry.
00:06:51Listen.
00:06:53Why don't you call me when you rejoin the human race, okay?
00:06:56Bye.
00:06:57Bye.
00:06:58Bye-bye.
00:06:59Nice meeting you.
00:07:00You too.
00:07:03This used to be a colleague of yours.
00:07:06A shrink named Kennedy, and this was his girlfriend, Elaine Vargas,
00:07:10who it also turns out was one of his patients.
00:07:12Boy, whoever did this really sliced them up like sushi.
00:07:15No, it's lovely.
00:07:16You know, you're doing wonders for my appetite.
00:07:18Now, see, I think it's your choice of breakfast foods.
00:07:21Anyway, I got no witnesses at all, Alex,
00:07:24except a seven-year-old girl who can't remember anything
00:07:27except she saw shadows.
00:07:29So, naturally, I thought of you.
00:07:31Yeah.
00:07:32What happened to the police's vaunted behavioral science divisions?
00:07:36Well, they don't know kids.
00:07:38You do.
00:07:39Did, Milo.
00:07:40Past tense.
00:07:41Thank you.
00:07:42Anyway, I've had enough blood and gore to last me a lifetime, thank you.
00:07:47What are you talking about? Hickle?
00:07:49That poor perv was just trying to atone for his sins
00:07:52blowing himself away in your office.
00:07:54Thank you, Dr. Sturgis.
00:07:56You're the cop, I'm the shrink, remember?
00:07:58Oh, yeah? Then why don't you go back to work?
00:08:01Listen, it takes a while.
00:08:03I know what I'm doing. I've got a Ph.D.
00:08:05Oh, yeah, I forgot.
00:08:07Except after six months of retirement,
00:08:09six months of licking your wounds, you're not getting any better.
00:08:12You are getting into hot tubs,
00:08:15jogging, collecting junk art.
00:08:17Pretty soon you'll be buying yourself a guru.
00:08:19But I got news for you, Doc.
00:08:21Nirvana through inertia doesn't make it.
00:08:23That's downright inspirational, Milo.
00:08:25You don't want to talk to me.
00:08:33All I need from you is an hour or two talking to a kid.
00:08:39She knows something she can't remember, Alex.
00:08:41I can feel it.
00:08:43I just need some help getting to it.
00:08:45I don't know. Hypnosis, maybe.
00:08:50Afterward, we repair to the restaurant of your choice,
00:08:53and then you can drift back up here, and I go home to Rick.
00:08:56How is Rick?
00:08:58He's parental, because I'm never there.
00:09:00Don't complain. You're lucky.
00:09:02That's true. He is every mother's dream.
00:09:04Nice Jewish doctor.
00:09:06Well, what do you say?
00:09:08If we get any kind of description, all great.
00:09:11If not, hey.
00:09:13Huh?
00:09:15Huh?
00:09:35Slaughterhouse, I assume.
00:09:37Mother's the manager.
00:09:39Mother's the manager.
00:09:41Kid's an insomniac.
00:09:43Apparently, she was sitting up in that window when the murders took place.
00:09:46Oh, very nice. Upscale.
00:09:48Wait.
00:09:54Yeah?
00:09:56Mrs. Quinn?
00:09:58It's Detective Sturgis.
00:10:02You're back again.
00:10:04Yes, this is Dr. Delaware, the psychologist I mentioned to you.
00:10:07How do you do?
00:10:09You talked to Dr. Tuttle about this, um, hypnotizing?
00:10:12Mrs. Quinn, this is a police investigation.
00:10:15Look, I told you before, she didn't see nothing.
00:10:18Anyway, she, uh, she lies to get attention.
00:10:20Mrs. Quinn.
00:10:22Look, officer, I don't want no trouble.
00:10:24This place is all singles. They don't like kids.
00:10:27Besides, I need the job.
00:10:29I understand, Mrs. Quinn.
00:10:31I would still like Dr. Delaware to talk to Melody.
00:10:33Please?
00:10:35Please.
00:10:40Melody?
00:10:54Hello, Melody.
00:10:58I'm Dr. Delaware. I'm a psychologist.
00:11:01Do you know what that means?
00:11:04Well, I'm the kind of doctor that doesn't give shots.
00:11:06What I do is I talk with kids,
00:11:09and we draw sometimes, and we play together.
00:11:12And I help them if they're feeling sad or angry or...
00:11:16or scared.
00:11:18Would you like to play?
00:11:20Answer the doctor, Melody.
00:11:25Well, me too.
00:11:27Maybe I could come back sometime and we could play together.
00:11:29Would you like that?
00:11:31If she's a good girl.
00:11:33I'm sure she is a good girl, Mrs. Quinn.
00:11:35Yeah.
00:11:37Go on back. Watch TV, huh? Go on.
00:11:40Wait. Stomp your pills.
00:11:45Excuse me. May I see that?
00:11:47I took her to Dr. Toll
00:11:49when the teachers kept sending home notes
00:11:51saying she couldn't sit still.
00:11:53Her mind wanders.
00:11:55Doctor says she's hyperactive.
00:11:57Thank you.
00:11:59Don't just stand there. Well, get in there and watch TV, huh?
00:12:04You see how she is?
00:12:06Nevertheless, Mrs. Quinn, I'd still like Dr. Delaware
00:12:09to talk with Melody some more.
00:12:11Excuse me. I'll be in touch.
00:12:18What's the problem?
00:12:20She's on medication. I can't work with her
00:12:22unless I get a doctor's permission.
00:12:24Well, talk to him. Get him to take her off.
00:12:26You don't talk to Dr. Toll. You listen.
00:12:28He's the chief of pediatrics at the hospital.
00:12:30Where you used to work. Yes.
00:12:32Great. No, not great. Why?
00:12:34He believes in the pharmacological solution
00:12:36to all of life's problems.
00:12:38Look, can't you at least talk to him?
00:12:40Hey, Milo, don't...
00:12:42Did you see the eyes on that kid?
00:12:44Do me a favor, will you?
00:12:46When you go and talk to Toll, shave.
00:12:48Please.
00:12:50Really.
00:12:53Doctor will be with you shortly.
00:12:55Very much.
00:13:16Dr. Delaware.
00:13:18Ah, yes, Dr. Toll.
00:13:20She's very beautiful.
00:13:22My wife. She died very young.
00:13:24I'm sorry.
00:13:26Yes, so was I.
00:13:30Please. Thank you.
00:13:32Hope you won't think me abrupt
00:13:34if I ask you what your interest is
00:13:36in Melody Quinn. No, not at all.
00:13:38I've been asked by the police to interview her
00:13:40as a possible witness to a crime.
00:13:42You and I have never had
00:13:44the good fortune to work together.
00:13:46Indeed, I understood you'd retired
00:13:48from our staff.
00:13:50This is a favor for a friend,
00:13:52Detective Sturgis.
00:13:54Oh, he investigated the Hickle case,
00:13:56didn't he? You two were all over
00:13:58the six o'clock news.
00:14:00Yes, yes, we were.
00:14:02That was a tragedy,
00:14:04particularly for the children.
00:14:06I admired your work, Alex.
00:14:08May I call you Alex?
00:14:10Yes, please, yes.
00:14:12Your departure from the field
00:14:14of behavioral pediatrics
00:14:16was a loss, a great loss.
00:14:18Thank you very much.
00:14:20I must confess, I'm a bit surprised
00:14:22to find a psychologist of your reputation
00:14:24making such an unusual request.
00:14:26Why is that?
00:14:28Melody Quinn
00:14:30is a severely hyperactive child.
00:14:32Without her medication,
00:14:34her attention span's too short
00:14:36for school. She can't sit still.
00:14:38She'll develop significant
00:14:40behavioral problems.
00:14:42Is there a way that you could
00:14:44reduce the dosage temporarily?
00:14:46I don't like to tamper with a winning
00:14:48combination. I see, all right, all right.
00:14:50Or she must have posed
00:14:52quite a problem to Merit's 16-milligram.
00:14:54Why else would I prescribe it?
00:14:56Oh, no, no, no, I just,
00:14:58well, I got the impression when I was talking to the mother
00:15:00that maybe she didn't want to disturb the neighbors
00:15:02and perhaps she was using
00:15:04the medication in a haphazard way,
00:15:06that's all. Well, I'd have to check
00:15:08that, but there is a social
00:15:10context here. If there's nowhere
00:15:12for the girl and her mother to
00:15:14live, that's hardly therapeutic,
00:15:16now, is it?
00:15:18No, it's a matter of cost-risk analysis.
00:15:20Well, I'd still
00:15:22really appreciate it if you'd consider just
00:15:24lowering the dosage for a few days.
00:15:26Why is this important to you?
00:15:28I would like your consent to hypnotize Melody.
00:15:30Hypnotize?
00:15:32You said interview.
00:15:34Yes, I did, but the police think that she may
00:15:36remember more under hypnosis.
00:15:38Taking this child off medication
00:15:40will make her more susceptible to hypnosis.
00:15:42Her concentration will be poorer.
00:15:44I have inductions that are specially suited
00:15:46for children with short attention spans.
00:15:48Well, anything's possible.
00:15:50Of course, the question is,
00:15:52is it advisable? No, no, no.
00:15:54As Melody's physician, I must insist
00:15:56that she continue with the regime
00:15:58that I have prescribed for so that
00:16:00she can function normally.
00:16:02Will you consent to hypnosis, Warren?
00:16:06I'll tell you what.
00:16:08Because of my respect for you,
00:16:10I'll think about it.
00:16:12He'll think about it, Alex.
00:16:14God, what an egomaniac.
00:16:16Doctor is omnipotent.
00:16:18Doctor can fix anything.
00:16:20I take it you wouldn't give us permission.
00:16:22Doctor will think about it.
00:16:24You're worried about the kid, aren't you?
00:16:26Yeah, you're damn right I am.
00:16:28So what now?
00:16:30I have to go back and tell Melody.
00:16:32We won't be playing together after all.
00:16:34So she doesn't think I just disappeared.
00:16:36The twins could have killed him.
00:16:38Why are you asking me?
00:16:40Oh, come on.
00:16:42Come on, Alex.
00:16:44Just check out Kennedy's files.
00:16:46See if anyone strikes your trained eye.
00:16:48You can do it in your hammock.
00:16:54Mrs. Quinn?
00:16:58Hi.
00:17:02Oh, I didn't expect you back so soon.
00:17:04I've just come by to tell Melody that we won't...
00:17:06Melody!
00:17:08You're going to have to buy her lunch and give her her bill.
00:17:10Actually, Mrs. Quinn, you don't understand.
00:17:12You guys want to hypnotize her?
00:17:14The least you could do is speed her.
00:17:20Shall we?
00:17:24We'll be back in a couple of hours.
00:17:30Want to go for a ride?
00:17:32Yeah.
00:17:34How come?
00:17:36Mommy said don't be grubby.
00:17:40Oh.
00:17:42Well, I want to go for a ride, so come on.
00:18:02Come on.
00:18:12Thanks for the beer.
00:18:14You're welcome.
00:18:16Dr. Delaware?
00:18:18Why don't you call me Alex, Melody?
00:18:20You're supposed to take my pill now.
00:18:22Oh, right.
00:18:26How do these make you feel?
00:18:28Kind of.
00:18:30I'll tell you what.
00:18:32Why don't we take these a little later on, okay?
00:18:42Uh-oh.
00:18:44I got my bear wet.
00:18:46Dr. Delaware?
00:18:48Alex?
00:18:50Are you going to hypnotize me?
00:18:52Only if you want me to.
00:18:54Will it make me think better?
00:18:56You think just fine, Melody,
00:18:58but it may help you remember.
00:19:00Melody, I want you to remember
00:19:02the night the doctor was hurt.
00:19:04It's all right.
00:19:06It's okay.
00:19:08You're safe, and you're very relaxed.
00:19:10But now you can see yourself,
00:19:12just like being in a movie.
00:19:14And you see yourself that night.
00:19:16You get up from bed,
00:19:18and you walk towards the window,
00:19:20and you look out.
00:19:22Now tell me what you see.
00:19:24Dark.
00:19:26Dark.
00:19:28Yes, it's dark outside.
00:19:30What else do you see?
00:19:32Shadows.
00:19:34How many?
00:19:36Two.
00:19:38No, three.
00:19:40That's good.
00:19:42Can you tell me what they look like?
00:19:46Except one of them looks funny.
00:19:50Funny? How funny?
00:19:52I don't know.
00:19:54Just...
00:19:56funny.
00:19:58Okay, that's very good.
00:20:02Can you see anything else?
00:20:12Melody, what is it?
00:20:16Something else.
00:20:18Tell me.
00:20:20After the shadows,
00:20:22somebody screamed.
00:20:52Don't you ever knock?
00:20:54Don't you know what happens
00:20:56to guys who leave their doors unlocked?
00:20:58Friends invade their privacy.
00:21:00You have no privacy.
00:21:02You're a police consultant now.
00:21:04It's official, Alex.
00:21:06I signed your name myself.
00:21:08What happened with Melody?
00:21:10One of these shadows walked funny,
00:21:12and somebody screamed.
00:21:14You hypnotized her?
00:21:16Yeah, I left her my phone number, too,
00:21:18in case she thinks of anything else,
00:21:20Did you find any likely candidates?
00:21:22Nine might qualify.
00:21:24Not that Kennedy was much of a therapist.
00:21:26No treatment plans, stress histories,
00:21:28almost no clinical notes at all.
00:21:30Just sarcastic comments on his patients.
00:21:32But these I'd categorize
00:21:34as possible psychopaths.
00:21:36No.
00:21:38Not him, not her.
00:21:40You know something I don't know?
00:21:42Yeah, while you've been psychologizing,
00:21:44I've been detecting, checking the whereabouts
00:21:46of all of Kennedy's patients.
00:21:48None of them are or have alibis
00:21:50except these three.
00:21:52Ready? Let's go.
00:21:54Where are we going?
00:21:56Oh, you think I'm still into rehab?
00:21:58No, you see, my car just died
00:22:00right in front of your house,
00:22:02and I could use a ride
00:22:04to check out these names.
00:22:06Sure you could.
00:22:08Alex, you don't believe me.
00:22:10I'm really hurt.
00:22:12Don't cry.
00:22:14It's not family.
00:22:16Hey, uh, we got a college student,
00:22:18a pharmacist down in Saugus,
00:22:20and a salesman in the valley.
00:22:22Suspects all.
00:22:24The valley? Oh, that's great.
00:22:36I love Burbank in the springtime.
00:22:38It's fall, and don't be provincial.
00:22:46May I assist you?
00:22:48Maurice Bruno, please.
00:22:50Mr. Bruno's not available.
00:22:52Who's his boss?
00:22:54That would be Mr. Gershman.
00:22:56Then that would be who I'd like to talk to.
00:22:58May I inquire about what?
00:23:00No, honey, you may not.
00:23:02Come on in.
00:23:04Behave yourself.
00:23:08Um, look,
00:23:10I'll be with you guys in a sec, okay?
00:23:12Lenny? Lenny, I got cops here.
00:23:14I gotta go.
00:23:16Yeah, cops. I...
00:23:18I don't know, Lenny. I don't know.
00:23:20Look, you want to ask them?
00:23:22Right, right, that's what I figured.
00:23:24Okay, look, we got a deal here or what?
00:23:26Yeah, yeah, matchbooks, coasters,
00:23:28the whole schmear.
00:23:30Okay, fine. That's good, good.
00:23:32I promise delivery in three weeks.
00:23:34Yeah, okay, right, you bet your baby.
00:23:36Okay, sweetie, bye-bye. Gotta go.
00:23:38Uh...
00:23:40Excuse the glitz.
00:23:42My wife and her interior decorator.
00:23:44See what happens when the gay boys
00:23:46dictate taste.
00:23:48So, uh,
00:23:50tell me, what do you want with Murray?
00:23:52Just a few questions.
00:23:54Oh, come on. Come on, you guys
00:23:56can't harass him like this.
00:23:58I mean, he did his time for the
00:24:00bad Czech rap.
00:24:02The court even made him go to a shrink.
00:24:04He's clean.
00:24:06Where is he, Mr. Gershman?
00:24:08Vegas.
00:24:10He's got a lot of business there.
00:24:12How long has he been there?
00:24:14Uh, week, two weeks, I don't know.
00:24:16I don't check on him.
00:24:18Can you get him on the phone?
00:24:20Why not?
00:24:22Uh, Grace, uh,
00:24:24yeah, get Murray at the Sand Swimming League.
00:24:26Yeah.
00:24:28You know, you're making a big mistake here.
00:24:30What's that?
00:24:32Whatever it is you think, Murray did.
00:24:34I mean, he may have played a little fast
00:24:36and loose in the past, but that's all behind him now.
00:24:38Besides, he's a terrific salesman.
00:24:42Yeah, Murray.
00:24:44What do you mean he's not there?
00:24:46He got an address?
00:24:48Look, he just switched hotels.
00:24:50That's all.
00:24:52Where does he live?
00:24:54Glendale. Look, I'm...
00:24:56This is a guy who works a
00:24:5874-hour week, and on top of that,
00:25:00he volunteers to work with kids.
00:25:02Where does he do that?
00:25:04Well, Reverend McCaffrey's place.
00:25:06That's, uh, Pueblos de los Ninos.
00:25:08It's a home for homeless kids out by Malibu.
00:25:10I'm telling you,
00:25:12you're making a big mistake here.
00:25:14The address, Mr. Gershman.
00:25:16Please.
00:25:18Looks like nobody's home.
00:25:48What's the matter?
00:25:50I'm gonna find a phone.
00:25:52We need the Glendale PD.
00:25:54You're not going to find it.
00:25:56I'm gonna find it.
00:25:58I'm always doing it,
00:26:00but I can't do it now.
00:26:02You're gonna do it?
00:26:04You're gonna do it?
00:26:06You're gonna do it?
00:26:08You're gonna do it?
00:26:10I don't think so.
00:26:12What's he doing here?
00:26:14He's taking care of his business
00:26:16We need the Glendale P.D.

00:27:55Yeah.
00:27:57Get out of here
00:28:08You know why this shakes you up so much
00:28:10Expectation so you think all that's wrong with the world is people got problems and you can solve you're getting simplistic
00:28:17What you don't understand is that some people don't have problems. Some people are the problem
00:28:23I'll worry about you. I'm fine. I'm
00:28:27That's what you said last time right after Hickle just before you bailed out. I didn't bail out
00:28:32I took a sabbatical if there's one thing I learned in the military was about acute stress reaction
00:28:38Oh, what did they do? They send the guys right back into battle get off my back with I
00:28:43Guess what? I'm trying to say is I'm sorry. You had to see what you did today
00:28:48Me too, but don't get regressive on me. Okay things happen. We gotta go on living in the world, you know
00:28:58You ever treat a cop
00:29:02Father of a patient
00:29:04real angry guy
00:29:07He used to like to say that
00:29:09The scum out there like weeds a real bitch to get rid of and once you do another one pops right back up in the same
00:29:16place
00:29:18That's what I've been making my living after the last 12 years
00:29:22spreading weed killer
00:29:28I
00:29:41Don't know what the problem is I could have driven your car back wait wait wait for me wait for me. I'll be right back
00:29:51You have to be quiet
00:29:57Yeah, let me do it I got it
00:30:04Wrong lock
00:30:09You know this guy I'm not evening gentlemen, dr. Delaware, you know, dr. Silverman, dr. Silverware
00:30:18Did you just hate a drunk?
00:30:22Has no sense of humor, but it's great. I love you. Where are you going?
00:30:27You're welcome to stay, you know, I know. Thanks. No, no, we can't stay
00:30:31He cannot stay because we have no hot tub, right? Yeah, right, but we got a cold shower. Come on. Okay. Yeah, take care
00:30:39Good night, Milo. Oh
00:30:44How thoughtful of you to bring my car back
00:30:48Jack and serve is our motto. I don't suppose you have any tomato juice around
00:30:53Don't tell me this is a social call
00:30:56No, as a matter of fact, it's not him to compare notes. Well, I don't have any
00:31:02Yeah, well the pharmacist and the college student both have alibis. So Bruno's it as far as suspects go
00:31:08He's dead. So case closed
00:31:11Almost now remember Melody said something about one of the shadows walk funny
00:31:16Well, it turns out one of the footprints
00:31:18Forensics found outside of Bruno's house might have been from a guy with a bad leg
00:31:23Also when we check their phone records
00:31:26We found that Kennedy and Bruno have been talking a lot together after Bruno's treatments were finished. So
00:31:34Well, so is that usual? I mean do your patients usually call you up after their treatments or sometimes?
00:31:42every day
00:31:43No, I
00:31:45Think these calls could have been therapeutic
00:31:48Doubtful. Yeah, that's what I figured
00:31:51So what did Kennedy the shrink in Bruno the psycho have to talk about don't tell me please don't worry
00:31:56I can it's all just coincidental connections
00:31:59Like for example, the best guesstimate the coroner can make is that Bruno was killed between 10 and 12 days ago
00:32:07Isn't that about the same time that Kennedy and Vargas woman were killed another little tasty tidbit is that the good dr
00:32:15Kennedy had a record insurance fraud seems like he'd been billing Medi-Cal for patients in a nursing home. He never bothered to visit
00:32:23Well, there it is. Why the connection you've been looking for?
00:32:28You gonna tell me
00:32:34See you've been assuming that the Kenny was treating Bruno what if he was using him instead
00:32:39What do you mean like a psychopathic shrink? Yeah. Yeah wouldn't be the first time
00:32:42Maybe
00:32:44Maybe they are involved in some scam together. Maybe you should check out their insurance claims. They're a financial record stuff like that
00:32:52What about the Vargas woman no better well, we know that she was having an affair with Kennedy
00:32:58Which wasn't exactly ethical on his part. We also know that that she's dead. Maybe maybe she wasn't the innocent bystander. Oh
00:33:05You mean like maybe she was part of whatever scam Kennedy and Bruno. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, what do you know about it?
00:33:10Family lives in East LA if Kennedy had a file on her. It's gone now. What'd you do for a living teacher special ed?
00:33:19where
00:33:20West LA
00:33:22Interviewed another teacher out there Raquel Santos Chicano supposed to be Vargas his best friend
00:33:29Huh way she talked you think they never even knew each other. I'd figure she's lying probably hates cops
00:33:34No, Alex, you ought to be real good at talking to teachers
00:33:37Uh-huh, you're good. You're very good. Where's she teach Willow Lane Elementary, right?
00:34:07Santos yes
00:34:10I'm Alex Delaware. I'm working with detective Sturgis
00:34:14PhD in what psychology
00:34:18Cops don't get satisfaction. So they send in the shrinks, huh? I
00:34:22Have a few questions. I'd like to ask you about Elaine Vargas Elena. I'm sorry. I'm busy. I
00:34:30Don't understand you're too busy to find out who murdered your friend. What gives you the right to say that to me?
00:34:35It's the cops who don't care. No, that's not true. Oh, we knew the example of LA's finest. Listen
00:34:41I'm sorry you feel this way, but I do need some information. That's all. Well, not for me
00:34:45Alright fine. Will you tell me where Elena's family lives?
00:34:49You're gonna go into my old neighborhood if I have to yes
00:34:54Could you please leave I've got a class to teach. Oh, well good then we both have something to do don't
00:34:59They're in the book under V of Argus good. Thank you. Excuse me
00:35:07Thank you
00:35:29You
00:35:41Excuse me, I'm I'm looking for the Vargas family Cruz Vargas
00:35:46Hi, I'm Dr. Delaware. I'm a psychologist, and I'm working with the police on the murder
00:35:59of Mrs. Vargas' daughter. Yeah, sure you are.
00:36:02Can you tell me where I can find Mrs. Vargas? Say what, man?
00:36:07Nothing. I'm looking for the Vargas family.
00:36:10For what? Stay out of this.
00:36:12Listen, Doc, why don't you take your phony concern and stuff it back in that fancy car
00:36:17of yours before somebody gets hurt? Yeah.
00:36:20Listen, all I want to do... What? What, psychoanalyze us? Is that what
00:36:26you want? You want to open us up and see what makes us tick? You want to watch an old woman
00:36:30cry? Huh? Is that how you get your kicks, you sick sucker? Get out of here!
00:36:36Damn! Quiet! Quiet there! Get out of here!
00:37:06Hi. Can I give you a hand? Yes. Bye-bye. Did you visit the Vargas family?
00:37:23Fool that I am, yes. You could just dump that there.
00:37:32Well, I guess I owe you an apology. Does this mean you'll talk to me?
00:37:37I don't know. Listen, we know that Kennedy was a creep,
00:37:41and we're pretty sure that Elena was an innocent victim, but please help us make sure.
00:37:48Okay. Thank you.
00:37:54I saw you with the kids. You're good with them. I hate the bureaucracy, but I love what
00:37:59I do. With Elena?
00:38:01Yes, Elena. I just miss her. I understand.
00:38:07Do you? Look, I'm sorry. It's just, uh, she was so special, and the kids loved her, and
00:38:13they learned so much from her, and now she's gone. Look, I don't think I can do this anymore.
00:38:30One of her kids was killed. His name was Cary Nemeth. He was new when she got him, and after
00:38:36she worked with him, you could hardly shut him up. He was an orphan from the pueblo.
00:38:42Elena felt just like his mother. It was a hit and run. God, what a waste.
00:38:51Was that Pueblo de los Niños? Yes, they contract with us for special ed.
00:38:58Is that why she started treatment with Kennedy?
00:39:02She was depressed. Kennedy changed her. I warned her he was so slimy, but she was in
00:39:08love, so she bought new clothes and a 300ZX and...
00:39:11How could she afford that? Payments. She might have let him take advantage
00:39:16of her, but she would never take any money. She was no whore.
00:39:19Of course she wasn't. I'm sorry. If I have any other questions, can I get back to you?
00:39:28Yes.
00:39:36This kid, Cary Nemeth, lived up to Pueblo. He was a student of Elena Barton's. Now, when
00:39:41he's killed, she gets real depressed and starts treatment with Kennedy. Pretty soon, they're
00:39:45going to bed together, and right after that, Bruno volunteers to become a member of the
00:39:49gentleman's brigade of Pueblo de los Niños. Alex, you want to keep your voice down?
00:39:53Why? What's the matter? I've created a monster.
00:39:55What are you talking about? Look, Alex, you've done great work, and I
00:39:58really appreciate it, but now that you've got your motor running again, you're pushing
00:40:02too hard. So relax. Relax? What are you talking about? You asked me, remember?
00:40:10Yeah, but now I'm asking you to back off. Look, Alex, I want this investigation, but
00:40:14I want it done right. Now, I'm not the most popular guy in the department, and there's
00:40:19no way I'm going to risk getting dumped off this case by blindly pointing my finger at
00:40:24Reverend McCaffrey, who happens to be connected from here to Sacramento.
00:40:28Well, you can at least check it out, can't you?
00:40:31And I will, discreetly. Now, can I have your I.D. card back?
00:40:36I left it at home. Okay, but remember, you're retired. Alex?
00:40:47I heard you. Say it.
00:40:52I'm retired. Thank you.
00:40:54You're welcome.
00:41:05About time, Milo.
00:41:17Hello.
00:41:18You call yourself a doctor? You tell me you know what you're doing.
00:41:22Who is this?
00:41:23You know damn well you mess with my baby's mind.
00:41:27Mrs. Quinn? What's wrong?
00:41:30Listen to her.
00:41:32Get away!
00:41:35Mrs. Quinn? Mrs. Quinn, I'll be right there.
00:41:47Hurry, please, do something!
00:41:51Melody, it's me, Alex.
00:41:54No, no, shadows!
00:41:56You see what you've done to her?
00:41:58The nurses have nothing to do with this, Mrs. Quinn.
00:42:00That's not what Doctor told me.
00:42:02Melody, sweetheart, it's okay. Come on, it's okay. You're safe. It's okay. It's okay, Melody. It's all right.
00:42:06Alex?
00:42:07Yes, it's me, Alex.
00:42:09Alex, Alex, they came back.
00:42:11Who did? Who did?
00:42:12The shadows.
00:42:13The shadows.
00:42:14No, it was just a dream, Melody.
00:42:16No, no, they were here.
00:42:18No, it was just a bad dream, sweetheart, and I want you to open your eyes. Will you do that, please?
00:42:22Come on, open your eyes.
00:42:24Do what he says.
00:42:25Sweetheart, come on. Come on.
00:42:28Melody, please, come on.
00:42:30There you go. Open them up.
00:42:33Come on, sweetheart.
00:42:40Take your hands off that child.
00:42:42She's just having a nightmare, that's all.
00:42:44Caused, no doubt, by your unethical meddling.
00:42:47I think you'd better leave, Doctor.
00:42:49She doesn't need that.
00:42:50Obviously, your memory needs polishing.
00:42:52You can see why I was reluctant to tamper with this child's mind.
00:42:55Nobody is tampered with anything. Please don't do that.
00:42:58What if I bring you up before the Ethics Committee of the State Medical Board?
00:43:01Oh, you do that, Doctor, and we'll have a little discussion about the proper use of stimulant medication with children.
00:43:06You heard the Doctor. Get out!
00:43:08Hold her.
00:43:09Please, I don't like needles.
00:43:29Can I help you, sir?
00:43:30Yes, please. Doctor Delaware to see Mr. Kruger. I have a three o'clock appointment.
00:43:34Yes, sir.
00:43:39Thank you.
00:44:01Doctor Delaware, I presume.
00:44:02Yes.
00:44:03Tim Kruger.
00:44:04I was expecting someone a little older. I understand you're retired.
00:44:07While I can still enjoy it.
00:44:09There's something to be said for that.
00:44:11Shall we take the tour, and then Reverend Gus will see you at four?
00:44:14Sure.
00:44:16These are the dorms.
00:44:18They were donated by several corporations, and the murals were painted by the kids.
00:44:23From here, you get a pretty good view of our layout.
00:44:25We have 27 acres, but only five are fully developed.
00:44:28To the south is the meadow. There'll be a vegetable garden there this summer.
00:44:31And to the north is the grove, which is perfect for nature hikes.
00:44:34Here at the Pueblo, we try to combine a structure and reassurance of a daily routine
00:44:38with a creative environment that encourages a healthy development.
00:44:41Well, you certainly seem to have a handle on things.
00:44:44Where'd you train?
00:44:45MAU of Oregon, counseling.
00:44:48Wanted to go for a doctorate, but no bucks.
00:44:50Before that, a BA in psych from Jetson.
00:44:53Jetson, that's up near Seattle, right?
00:44:55You know Jetson?
00:44:56Only by reputation, and all you students were rich.
00:44:59Not this one, I'm afraid.
00:45:00Went through on scholarship.
00:45:03Well, these are the dorms.
00:45:06Shall we?
00:45:09Is that you, Rodney?
00:45:13Withdrawing one of our current challenges.
00:45:20Hello, Rodney. What seems to be the trouble?
00:45:23Rodney's sick.
00:45:25What kind of a sickness?
00:45:27Tummy hurt.
00:45:28Hmm, that sounds like you should see the doctor when he visits.
00:45:31No, no doctor!
00:45:33All right, we'll discuss it later.
00:45:35But now it is time to get up.
00:45:41Whoa!
00:45:43Rodney, this is a friend, Dr. Mr. Delaware.
00:45:46Hi, Rodney.
00:45:48Rodney, be friendly or you'll lose privileges.
00:45:54Sorry about that.
00:45:57It's nine going on four.
00:45:59Reverend Gus doesn't believe in taking the easy ones.
00:46:01Where do you get your kids?
00:46:03Everywhere. Anywhere they're not wanted, cared for.
00:46:06They're orphans mostly, throwaways.
00:46:09Reverend Gus is a compassionate man.
00:46:13Shall we?
00:46:14Yes.
00:46:17Okay, short strokes now.
00:46:21Hey Earl, say hello to Dr. Delaware.
00:46:25How you doing, Doc?
00:46:26Pretty good. Yourself?
00:46:27Good, thanks.
00:46:29Earl's one of my best counselors.
00:46:32I'm Bob Halsey, our coach.
00:46:34Bob, Dr. Delaware.
00:46:35Doctor, my pleasure.
00:46:36Mine too.
00:46:37Dr. Delaware is a prospective gentleman.
00:46:40Reverend Gus approves, of course.
00:46:41Well, that's great.
00:46:42We can't have too many pros working with these kids. Right, Earl?
00:46:46Well, shall we? It's almost four.
00:46:48All right, I guess I'll see you all later.
00:46:50You can count on it, Doc.
00:46:51Oh, and by the way, Bob, maybe you could work out a program for Rodney.
00:46:54Something to build his confidence.
00:46:55You bet.
00:46:59Thank you.
00:47:07Dr. Alex Delaware, of course.
00:47:09How do you do?
00:47:10How nice to meet you.
00:47:11And to introduce you to our distinguished board member, Judge Edwin Marks, of the Los Angeles Judiciary.
00:47:16Oh, well, it's an honor.
00:47:18Your reputation precedes you, Doctor.
00:47:20We've all admired your work with those poor children.
00:47:23Thank you.
00:47:24Judge Marks is a member of our gentleman's brigade.
00:47:27Ordinarily, he would be wearing a more dashing ensemble.
00:47:31But our monthly talent show is coming up, and Bobo the Clown is our most popular emcee.
00:47:36I'm afraid I must go to rehearsal.
00:47:38A pleasure, Dr. Delaware.
00:47:40Thank you.
00:47:42Tim, would you show the judge out, please?
00:47:44Yes, sir.
00:47:46I hope I'm not interrupting anything here.
00:47:48Oh, not at all.
00:47:49As a matter of fact, when the judge heard that you were coming, he insisted on meeting you despite his getup.
00:47:55Please, have a seat.
00:47:56Thank you.
00:47:58Well, Tim tells me that you have retired.
00:48:04May I ask you why?
00:48:07Oh, well, I guess I needed a change of pace, time to sort out my values.
00:48:12Reflection can be profoundly valuable.
00:48:17However, we need good people in your field.
00:48:21Like the way you handled that terrible daycare scandal.
00:48:25Children abused, a man's life wasted with no possibility of salvation.
00:48:32Do you think the man who killed himself could have been rehabilitated?
00:48:37I don't know. I don't think the statistics are very encouraging.
00:48:41Statistically, these children don't have a prayer.
00:48:45But with prayer and compassion and the generosity of people like yourself,
00:48:51miracles happen here every day.
00:48:54Well, those are some very busy men.
00:48:57You must be very persuasive, Reverend.
00:49:00Not at all.
00:49:02I simply recognize a basic human need.
00:49:05Whether it's a supervisor, a judge or a senator, he has in his heart a basic need to give.
00:49:12You yourself satisfied your own altruistic need through your own profession.
00:49:17And when you stopped, the hunger returned.
00:49:20I have to admit, I have begun to miss working with kids.
00:49:23And here you are.
00:49:26Well, I'm certainly impressed by your organization and your vigor.
00:49:30And it's an honor to be considered for membership with men like Judge Marks.
00:49:35Well, then we will expect to see you at our next orientation meeting.
00:49:39I'll have my secretary handle all the details.
00:49:42Thank you for your time, Reverend.
00:49:43No.
00:49:45Thank you.
00:49:46Let's go.
00:49:52No!
00:50:04No!
00:50:07Shut up!
00:50:16No!
00:50:21Are you crazy, man?
00:50:22I told you this guy McCaffrey was connected to people in high places.
00:50:26They didn't suspect anything.
00:50:27Oh, sure, right.
00:50:28The psychologist who treated the victims in the worst child abuse case in the city's history
00:50:32suddenly decides to come out of retirement by volunteering at the Pueblo?
00:50:35What, do you think they're stupid?
00:50:37Will you just listen to me at least?
00:50:39All right, let's hear it.
00:50:42There's something not right about that place.
00:50:45I'm listening.
00:50:46All right, I admit that on the surface everything seems normal, but...
00:50:49But what?
00:50:50I mean evidence, evidence.
00:50:52All right, all right, all right.
00:50:53Here, listen.
00:50:54Tim Kruger, the head of counseling up there,
00:50:56told me that he had a B.A. from Jetson College in psychology
00:50:59and an M.A. from Oregon,
00:51:01except he never went to Oregon and his undergraduate degree was in dramatic arts.
00:51:05I mean, the guy was lying to me.
00:51:06Excuse me, isn't that confidential information?
00:51:09What's your point?
00:51:10How'd you get it?
00:51:11You lied to some college admissions office, right?
00:51:13I can't use that in court.
00:51:16It's the feel of the place, Milo.
00:51:18What?
00:51:19They've got gates, fences.
00:51:20I mean, everybody's so upbeat, so relentlessly positive,
00:51:23but right underneath the surface...
00:51:25Underneath the surface what?
00:51:27What?
00:51:28What?
00:51:29I think they may be mistreating the kids up there.
00:51:33That's quite an accusation.
00:51:34You got anything to back it up?
00:51:36I want to talk to you, Sturgis.
00:51:39Captain, I'd like you to meet Dr. Alex Delaware.
00:51:42How do you do?
00:51:45Excuse us.
00:51:46Thank you.
00:52:14What was that all about?
00:52:15Nothing. Police business.
00:52:17We're talking about evidence.
00:52:18Drop it.
00:52:20What do you mean, drop it?
00:52:21Look, you know what you got here, Alex?
00:52:23Nothing.
00:52:24All your evidence is coincidental.
00:52:25Most of it questionably obtained.
00:52:27You don't believe that.
00:52:28I'll tell you what I believe.
00:52:29I believe I should have left you in retirement.
00:52:31What about all the connections, Milo?
00:52:32Come on, man, talk to me.
00:52:33What connections?
00:52:34What connections?
00:52:35So this kid, Kerry...
00:52:36Nameth.
00:52:37Nameth.
00:52:38So this kid, Kerry Nameth, gets killed,
00:52:39and his teacher is Elaine Vargas, right?
00:52:41So what?
00:52:42And maybe she and this guy, Kennedy, are involved in some scam.
00:52:44What about Bruno?
00:52:45And maybe they're not.
00:52:46Well, did you check their financial records?
00:52:47Not yet.
00:52:48What about Kruger lying to me?
00:52:49What about it?
00:52:50Oh, come on, Milo.
00:52:51Back off, Alex.
00:52:52You are messing with people's reputations here,
00:52:54powerful people who know how to use the system,
00:52:56and you don't.
00:52:57All right, all right.
00:52:58What if I could get the evidence?
00:52:59No, no, Alex.
00:53:00I am asking you as a friend.
00:53:02No, I'm telling you.
00:53:03Lay off before you blow this case and me
00:53:06right out of the water.
00:53:15Did Elaine keep a diary or make any tape recordings
00:53:18or anything like that?
00:53:20No, not that I know of.
00:53:22Why, do you think maybe she left some evidence
00:53:25the police didn't find?
00:53:26It's possible.
00:53:28Do you think the family will talk to you?
00:53:31I don't know.
00:53:32I think that talking about Kennedy
00:53:34will be especially touchy if they didn't like him.
00:53:36He was older and he was an Anglo.
00:53:38I think it's easier for them to just deny the whole thing.
00:53:45How long have you been gone?
00:53:47A thousand years.
00:53:50My parents are gone
00:53:51and I don't have any family left here.
00:53:55Rafael, how you doing?
00:54:01Rafael's been zoned out for years.
00:54:03Andy's the responsible one.
00:54:05What are you doing here?
00:54:07I'm here to talk to you.
00:54:09I'm here to talk to you about the case.
00:54:12You're going to talk to me about the case?
00:54:14I'm going to talk to you about the case.
00:54:16I'm going to talk to you about the case.
00:54:18I'm going to talk to you about the case.
00:54:22What's he doing here?
00:54:24We just want to talk to your mom.
00:54:26She's not home.
00:54:28Señora?
00:54:29She's not home.
00:54:59He'd like to ask you some questions.
00:55:05No, no!
00:55:09Wait here.
00:55:14You were warned, man.
00:55:23She'll talk with you, but please be patient. She's um, she's not happy about any of this.
00:55:29Okay.
00:55:35Gracias, senora.
00:55:41I'm very sorry for your loss.
00:55:46Please forgive me, but did Elena have more money right before she died?
00:55:54I'm sorry, but I need to ask this. It's very important.
00:56:00No.
00:56:02Thank you.
00:56:05Is there anything you can tell me, anything at all about your daughter's involvement with Dr. Kennedy?
00:56:17If it hadn't been for that brujo, my daughter would still be alive.
00:56:27Mrs. Vargas.
00:56:29Would it be all right if I were to take a look at Elena's things?
00:56:36Thank you.
00:56:39Thank you.
00:56:56I'll take it outside.
00:56:58I'll stay with her.
00:57:28Hey, what did I tell you? What the hell do you think you're doing, huh? I'm investigating the death of your sister, man.
00:57:33Oh, no, you're out of here, man. No!
00:57:37I caught this dude stealing. He's a guest in our house. He's nothing. You think he cares?
00:57:43Well, maybe if it was some white chick, huh? Some Elaine from Beverly Hills. Well, there'd be cops all over this place, right?
00:57:49But a Mexicana whose name was Elena. Oh, look who they sent.
00:57:54Apologize.
00:57:59You're dead, man. You and your coconut girlfriend, you come back here again, you're dead.
00:58:04Come on.
00:58:08I apologize. I apologize for the rudeness of my sons. No, it is for me to apologize.
00:58:17Maybe we should go.
00:58:28Okay.
00:58:46Damn. Do you think there was a tape? I don't know.
00:58:58I know how you feel.
00:59:23I'll see you soon. Yes.
00:59:28Bye.
00:59:30Bye.
00:59:32So
00:59:56What can I do for you? I'm Dr. Delaware. I'd like to see the file on a previous patient of mine, please.
01:00:01Name? Kerry Neiman.
01:00:05Hey there. Alex, what a surprise.
01:00:10And look at you.
01:00:12Is that a suit and tie and your back among the living? So am I. Listen, I got your message the other night.
01:00:17I'm sorry I didn't call you. Oh, that's all right. I had tickets to the ballet and I thought maybe you'd like to escort me, but
01:00:23I took my ex instead. I lost his game.
01:00:27We might be getting back together.
01:00:29And I wanted to thank you for letting me cry on your shoulder all those late evenings. Well, you're welcome.
01:00:35Listen, do you have a time to have a cup of coffee? No, my break's not till 10, but sure.
01:00:42Just let me freshen up, all right?
01:00:59Thank you. Put it back, Alex.
01:01:04It's important. Yeah, and so is my job.
01:01:09Alex! I'll read it to you. I will. What are you doing?
01:01:13Those photographs you saw in my kitchen. And what does Dr. Toll have to do with that?
01:01:17I don't know, maybe nothing, but there are things going on that I've got to find out about.
01:01:21Are you out of your mind? If someone were to walk in here right now, you would be barred from this hospital for life.
01:01:27Alex, you could lose your license.
01:01:29Just give me five minutes. Five minutes? God, you've changed.
01:01:33You know, you're back to that same obsessive behavior.
01:01:36At least before you were helping people. Now, I... Lisa, I don't want you to lose your job, and I'm gonna read this.
01:01:41Now, let me at least take you out to dinner. Oh, please don't insult me, Alex.
01:01:48Do what you have to do, Lisa.
01:01:54Alex.
01:01:58Five minutes, in there.
01:02:08Don't you ever give up? Listen to me. Listen to me.
01:02:10Cary Namath was killed right next to the Pueblo, but instead of taking him to a nearby hospital,
01:02:15they drove him all the way across town to Western Pediatric, where guess who was the attending physician? Warren Toll.
01:02:21Not only that, on Toll's personnel file, it said that he went to Jensen College, just like Tim Kruger.
01:02:25Don't you see what's happening? Interesting. What do you mean, interesting? Aren't you gonna check it up? Maybe. Well, when?
01:02:31Wanna get around to it? Milo.
01:02:33Stay out of this. Well, for God's sake, Milo, when are you gonna tell him you're off the case? Leave it alone. What happened?
01:02:38Routine reassignment. You know, this never would have happened if you weren't gay. That had nothing to do with it.
01:02:43We've been all through that. He's your friend. Who I would like to keep in one piece, and is
01:02:48perfectly capable of messing things up. Messing what up?
01:02:51Somebody, please talk to me.
01:02:53When the brass found out that Milo was investigating a man of the cloth, bang, he's off the case. Well, how do they know that?
01:03:00Well, a certain pediatrician called to complain that a certain psychologist was terrifying one of his patients, hypnotizing her.
01:03:08Now, all of this without his consent and at the behest of a certain detective.
01:03:12Oh, yes, and
01:03:14Toll also mentioned passing your little fishing trip out to the Pueblo. How did Toll know that, unless they told him? Don't get excited.
01:03:20It's not a conspiracy. He's the medical consultant out there. Are you kidding?
01:03:24What's happening here? Nothing. Nothing?
01:03:27Is that why the captain's sending you on a two-week vacation?
01:03:30They suspended you? Oh, no, not yet. At least not officially, but they're going to when they find out he's going down to Mexico.
01:03:43All right.
01:03:45Elaine Vargas did pay cash for a car, and both Kennedy and Bruno's bank accounts took a big jump a few months ago.
01:03:51Also, the word is that the reverend used to run another Pueblo down near Acapulco. I'm on the 8 a.m. flight.
01:04:03While you're in Mexico, I am going to Jetson College. Oh, no. Yes, I am. No, you will not go to Jetson College.
01:04:08While I'm gone, you will stay away from Toll and you will stay away from the Pueblo. You got that?
01:04:13Alex?
01:04:17Yes. Say it.
01:04:21I'm retired. Thank you.
01:04:23Thank you.
01:04:42My newspaper is doing an article on intellectually prominent small colleges on the west coast, and you seem to be the local historian.
01:04:50So, naturally, I... Naturally. We're usually going to be enterprising for a reporter, Mr. Roberts.
01:04:55Since most of them can't write, I assume they can't read, either. Professor Van de Graaff.
01:05:00You consider that intellectually prominent, do you?
01:05:03If it'll set your mind at ease, professor, you can talk to my editor in Los Angeles. They'll be happy to
01:05:09confirm my intent on this article. Her name is Raquel Santos. The number's on the back there.
01:05:15Oh, so it is. Tell me, if I should call Los Angeles Information and ask for the number of the times, would this be the correct one?
01:05:25You win, professor. I'm sorry. Don't try to bluff a bluffer, young man.
01:05:31Now, I propose we do a little quid pro quo. Such as?
01:05:35Well, you tell me who you are and why you're here, and I'll tell you what pleases me. That's fair enough.
01:05:41You can't believe what you do for grades. Professor, I'm working with the police.
01:05:45I'm not interested in your phony credentials. Doctor of what? Psychology.
01:05:53An old gossip like me is only interested in scandal.
01:05:57Appeal to my baser instincts, doctor. Professor, two of your former students, Warren Toll and Tim Krueger, are
01:06:04suspects in a criminal investigation. What sort of investigation? Murder.
01:06:08Aha!
01:06:10I'm here to find out anything I can about them. For instance?
01:06:13Well, all right. For example, why Tim Krueger, a scholarship student, would lie about his his undergraduate degree.
01:06:19Krueger, a scholarship student? We're approaching the Krueger building, doctor.
01:06:25I'm rich, but the Kruegers are obscene.
01:06:28As for lying, well, that's probably genetic.
01:06:32That's your other suspect, his cousin twice removed.
01:06:36I'm sorry. Are they they're related? All the 200 are related one way or another. What are the 200?
01:06:42I thought you read my book. I skimmed it.
01:06:45Oh, that's typical.
01:06:49Go get that old Seattle map over there.
01:06:53I'm going to show you Prindamore Island.
01:06:57Three square miles of innately unappealing terrain.
01:07:01Upon which there are 200 mansions and estates rivaling any in this country.
01:07:10Array in heaven.
01:07:14Toland Krueger grew up a generation apart from this breeding ground by the indolent,
01:07:21ignorant rich.
01:07:23I grew up there myself.
01:07:25Thanks to my
01:07:27deformity,
01:07:30I was set apart less instead of being just lazy. I turned out to be dull like Warren Toll
01:07:36or vicious like Krueger.
01:07:38Why do you say vicious?
01:07:39Well, he killed a boy wrestling and was said to be an accident, but they were dating the same girl.
01:07:46Snapped his neck like a twig.
01:07:49Is there is there anything else you can tell me about Dr. Toll?
01:07:52Dr. Toll?
01:07:54Yes, that tells you something about our medical schools.
01:07:57I don't believe he'd even graduated from here if it hadn't been for his family's money.
01:08:04He didn't complete a course in his whole senior year.
01:08:07Why was that?
01:08:08Well, even fools can suffer.
01:08:11His wife, a vacuous lovely girl,
01:08:15drove off the Evergreen Bridge one night and drowned. It was a genuine tragedy.
01:08:22Where was Toll at the time?
01:08:24Studying.
01:08:25If you can believe it.
01:08:29Yes,
01:08:30the funeral was the high point of the social season.
01:08:34I think I've got a picture of it here somewhere.
01:08:37You know, the way Toll carried on,
01:08:39you'd think he was responsible for it.
01:08:43Ah,
01:08:44here it is.
01:08:46Hamlet-like,
01:08:48he all but leapt into the grave.
01:08:52Well, maybe he loved her.
01:08:54Maybe he did.
01:08:59Professor, wait a minute.
01:09:02Who, who is that?
01:09:04It's Edwin Marks.
01:09:07Judge Marks?
01:09:08Well, I didn't know that he was a judge.
01:09:11This is Stuart Hickle.
01:09:13Yes, that's right.
01:09:15Oh my God, this man right here, was he a student there?
01:09:17Oh no, that's Augustus McCaffrey.
01:09:20Oh no, that's Augustus McCaffrey.
01:09:22He was a janitor in Toll's married student housing.
01:09:26They were all friends.
01:09:27Well, not McCaffrey, but the rest of them were.
01:09:30Called themselves heads of state.
01:09:32Arrogant little snots.
01:09:33Professor, I need to find out more about
01:09:37the life on Brindamore Island.
01:09:39How can I do that?
01:09:40Well, you could go there.
01:09:49I don't know.
01:10:19I don't know.
01:10:49I don't know.
01:11:19Mrs. Hickle.
01:11:21You remember me, Alex Delaware?
01:11:23Your husband picked my office for his last big scene, you remember?
01:11:27How did you get here?
01:11:29What do you want?
01:11:31I want the truth, Mrs. Hickle.
01:11:33Stuart is dead, there's nothing to talk about.
01:11:35Oh no, I think there's a lot to talk about.
01:11:37Get out!
01:11:39No.
01:11:41Don't move, or he'll tear you apart.
01:11:45Don't move, or he'll tear you apart.
01:11:51Mrs. Hickle.
01:12:07Otto!
01:12:09Otto.
01:12:13You see,
01:12:15I could have let him kill you.
01:12:17Now get out.
01:12:19I can't.
01:12:21I'm not one of them for God's sake.
01:12:23Please talk to me.
01:12:25I need your help.
01:12:33All right.
01:12:35All right.
01:12:39All right.
01:12:41Come, Otto.
01:12:59Come in.
01:13:02Sit, Otto.
01:13:04Sit down.
01:13:10This is how I live.
01:13:12I'm hiding from my life.
01:13:14I'm terrified they'll find me.
01:13:16Cole, McCaffrey, Marks, who?
01:13:19All of them.
01:13:21And others.
01:13:23They were sick like Stuart.
01:13:26But he wanted to change.
01:13:28To expose them.
01:13:31So they killed him.
01:13:33They what?
01:13:35What happened in your office wasn't a suicide.
01:13:41And Stuart wasn't the only one who molested the children.
01:13:46Why didn't you try to stop them?
01:13:48I didn't know.
01:13:50Not until later.
01:13:52And Stuart,
01:13:54I didn't want to know.
01:13:56I owed him my life.
01:13:59I was a child whore and a gutter in soul.
01:14:03Starving, diseased.
01:14:06He fed me.
01:14:08Got me doctors.
01:14:10Married me.
01:14:12Brought me to America.
01:14:15What did I care if he liked to dress me up in little girls' clothes?
01:14:21Or when I got healthy and started to look like a woman, he didn't want me anymore.
01:14:26He was rich.
01:14:28He was kind.
01:14:30He sent me to college.
01:14:33He gave me the money to open my preschool.
01:14:38I thought he had changed.
01:14:41Volunteering for the gentleman's brigade.
01:14:45Giving money.
01:14:47Helping the children of the pueblo.
01:14:51He was a very gentle man.
01:14:55I didn't know that his friends were monsters.
01:14:59How did you find out?
01:15:01Before they let him out of jail, he told me he wasn't the only one.
01:15:06That things weren't what they seemed with the gentleman.
01:15:09Was your school connected to the pueblo?
01:15:12No, that was something else.
01:15:14That was the others, his friends.
01:15:17They came to pick him up in their big, shiny cars.
01:15:21Rich, powerful men.
01:15:23Why didn't you tell someone?
01:15:25Who?
01:15:28If I had told you that these other men were bad too, you wouldn't have believed me.
01:15:34Because that's the way people in this country think.
01:15:38Nobody's bad, they're just sick.
01:15:41And the police, the newspapers.
01:15:45If I had gone to them and told them that Reverend McCaffrey and Judge Marks and Dr. Toll weren't just sick.
01:15:53They're evil.
01:15:55Would they have believed me?
01:15:57Would you?
01:16:02No.
01:16:04You are so innocent.
01:16:09So blind.
01:16:12Because you're afraid to see that evil exists.
01:16:18It kills.
01:16:34Thank you for doing this. Did you get in touch with Milo?
01:16:37Hello.
01:16:39Hi.
01:16:40I'm sorry.
01:16:41That's okay. I did, I spoke to his friend and he doesn't know where he is.
01:16:46He checked out of the hotel in Acapulco.
01:16:49Give me just a second, I want to make a phone call. I'll be right back.
01:16:59Hi, this is Alex Delaware. Please leave your name and number at the sound of the beep.
01:17:05Alex, I hope you can hear me.
01:17:07Look, this is Milo. This call has been murdered a place. I don't know how long it's going to last, so I'll make it short.
01:17:12We got him. We got McCaffrey. I'm checking it out now, but I'm on the way back.
01:17:17Please don't do anything until then.
01:17:22Alex, Alex, I need to talk to you. Mommy says we have to move in.
01:17:26What are you doing, Melody?
01:17:31Come on, let's go.
01:17:38Come on.
01:17:52Who are you?
01:17:54I own the building. Who the hell are you?
01:17:56Where's Melody?
01:17:57Who?
01:17:58The little girl.
01:17:59Oh, with her crazy mother. Gone, split.
01:18:02No notice, no nothing. She was supposed to manage the place for me.
01:18:05Left with all the bills. The place looks like a pigsty.
01:18:08Toys, books, dirt everywhere.
01:18:11What are you saying?
01:18:12Elena must have been involved. She paid cash for the car.
01:18:15I don't believe that.
01:18:16I mean, she teaches Carrie Nemeth how to speak, and the first thing out of the poor kid's mouth is what's happening up at the Pueblo.
01:18:20She must have told Kennedy, and then together with Bruno, they tried to blackmail McCaffrey.
01:18:25No, I still don't believe that.
01:18:26Maybe she was a victim like everybody else, but it makes sense. It explains the money, and it explains why they were all killed.
01:18:39They killed Carrie Nemeth, I'm sure of it.
01:18:41Oh, my God.
01:18:42They don't want any witnesses. We've got to find Melody now.
01:18:45But if all she saw was shadows...
01:18:47They can't be sure of that.
01:18:48Alex, leave it to the police. There's nothing that you can do, but you don't even know where she is.
01:18:53Where are we going?
01:18:54You're going home.
01:18:55Forget it.
01:18:56I don't want you hurt.
01:19:09Alex!
01:19:17Damn! Damn!
01:19:19He's still there.
01:19:25Hold on, hold on, hold on.
01:19:30Alex!
01:19:50Get down.
01:19:51You can't drive and watch when the things come out.
01:19:55Ouch!
01:19:57Oh, my God!
01:20:00Just hang on, hang on. We'll be all right.
01:20:21Hey, hold on, hold on.
01:20:22Alex!
01:20:23Hold on!
01:20:53Alex!
01:21:23He's from the Pueblo.
01:21:25Stay out of this. Go home.
01:21:27No, I'm going with you.
01:21:28Stay in there.
01:21:53Listen, I appreciate your discretion, but I've already tried the number on Mr. Kruger's tax form.
01:21:57Excuse me, can you tell me your name, please?
01:22:00So I can inform Mr. Kruger exactly why I was unable to mail this to him
01:22:03and why he's going to be charged automatically the interest penalty.
01:22:07Thank you very much.
01:22:09Wilshire Boulevard.
01:22:11Thank you.
01:22:12Alex, what are you doing? You can't follow through on this.
01:22:14Try to find Milo. Tell him I couldn't wait.
01:22:17Please, just do it.
01:22:28Mr. Keller!
01:22:31What the hell do you think you're doing?
01:22:33Where's Melody?
01:22:34Who?
01:22:35Melody Quinn.
01:22:36I don't know what you're talking about.
01:22:37What'd you do? Did you kill her, too?
01:22:40Who the hell do you think you are, doctor?
01:22:45I'm sorry.
01:22:47I'm sorry.
01:22:49I'm sorry.
01:22:51I'm sorry.
01:22:53I'm sorry.
01:22:55I'm sorry.
01:22:57I'm sorry.
01:22:58I'm sorry.
01:22:59I'm sorry.
01:23:00I'm sorry.
01:23:01I'm sorry.
01:23:02I'm sorry.
01:23:03I'm sorry.
01:23:04I'm sorry.
01:23:05I'm sorry.
01:23:06I'm sorry.
01:23:07I'm sorry.
01:23:08I'm sorry.
01:23:09I'm sorry.
01:23:10I'm sorry.
01:23:11I'm sorry.
01:23:12I'm sorry.
01:23:13I'm sorry.
01:23:14I'm sorry.
01:23:15I'm sorry.
01:23:16I'm sorry.
01:23:17I'm sorry.
01:23:18I'm sorry.
01:23:19I'm sorry.
01:23:20I'm sorry.
01:23:21I'm sorry.
01:23:22I'm sorry.
01:23:23I'm sorry.
01:23:24I'm sorry.
01:23:25I'm sorry.
01:23:26I'm sorry.
01:23:27I'm sorry.
01:23:28I'm sorry.
01:23:29I'm sorry.
01:23:32Get out!
01:23:56Oh
01:24:26Oh
01:24:38Yeah, mr. Carter, I'm gonna ask you some questions and you are gonna answer them and for every answer
01:24:43I don't like you're gonna lose a joint, you know elbow knee places like that
01:24:48What do you want? I told you I want a melody. She's out the Pueblo where the story sheds
01:24:55Is she still alive? I don't know. I swear. I don't know. What about her mother?
01:25:01She's dead. Did you do that Bob Hawley and Earl?
01:25:04They thought maybe the kid told her something. Is that why you killed Kennedy and Elena? I was a lookout
01:25:10Bob and Earl killed him because they knew too much about the gentleman's brigade
01:25:14Let's talk about the gentleman here for a minute. Are they all involved?
01:25:18Only the ones who could pay
01:25:20They make a donation
01:25:23Tax deductible the Reverend gives him a kid
01:25:26The rest is straight. It's a blind eye
01:25:28All right. All right. Now I know about the blackmail. You tell me where the tape is
01:25:33What tape the tape that Elena made it with Carrie Neiman talking about the Pueblo we burned it
01:25:44Over there a copy there's under the bed
01:25:48When'd you get it Elena her brother the hype he sold her out for a fix
01:25:53Man
01:26:15Who's with Melody
01:26:17tall have their own sedatives
01:26:20Unless Earl killed him. Well, you better pray that he hasn't because I'm coming back to him. I want you to talk to toll
01:26:25I want you to tell him there's been an emergency
01:26:27To meet Reverend Gus up at the Pueblo
01:26:31730 sharp Tim
01:26:34Be convincing
01:26:49I
01:27:12Make a big mistake. I'm gonna give you a chance to redeem yourself. You're gonna save a life for once instead of
01:27:20Physician I've saved many lives in my day like Carrie Namath
01:27:25You know everything oh, yes. Yes cousin. Tim has been very talkative
01:27:30Why you are a doctor for God's sake why yes, I am a doctor and you have no right to talk to me like this
01:27:37Oh
01:27:48I have to I
01:27:50Had I'm a murderer get up
01:27:56my wife
01:28:00I loved her so much and I killed her. I
01:28:04I didn't mean to
01:28:06we were young we were fighting and she slapped me and I
01:28:09Struck back and she fell and she hit her head and I was trying to help her when Gus
01:28:21Gus what he was working in the building. He heard us and I
01:28:29Was paralyzed and
01:28:33He felt for a pulse
01:28:45He called Stuart and Edward and they came and I gave me something to
01:28:52Make me sleep
01:28:54And Gus
01:28:57Took
01:28:59Her body
01:29:04Yes, I know he dumped her off the Evergreen Bridge, come on doctor
01:29:08Come on, please
01:29:10Paid him money. He disappeared
01:29:14Then Stuart and Edwin. I thought they were my friends
01:29:17After that, they made no secret of their perversions through the years. They'd call on me to patch up the children
01:29:24They damaged
01:29:26Then Gus came back a man of the cause of a mail-order
01:29:32Divinity degree crawling in old IOUs. It was the same thing
01:29:39I've been paying in blood ever since well, it's time to stop doctor
01:29:45Please get me through the gates. I need your help
01:29:48Drive. Come on, you can do it
01:29:56I
01:30:26I
01:30:28I
01:30:55Call
01:30:58Doc you scared me. What are you doing here?
01:31:09Whatever you gave her give him twice as much

01:31:27But he won't oh
01:31:31Please do give me an excuse doctor
01:31:33That's good now Warren get his gun and give it to me
01:31:43That's good
01:31:46Well
01:31:48What mischief have you been up to tonight Warren?
01:31:53Not feeling loquacious
01:31:55That's all right. We'll talk later
01:31:58Right now there's business to it. But I'm not going to tell you
01:32:02Right now there's business to attend to Gus. I don't think that's right. You don't
01:32:08Because if you did think you'd know that this man can cause us a lot of trouble. I
01:32:14Thought you had been taken care of now. I'll have the pleasure of that myself like you did with his wife. Shut up
01:32:20Oh, wait a minute. I
01:32:23Don't understand what you mean she wasn't dead was she was she
01:32:29Gus oh, come on. You're a physician. What are the odds that a blow like that could kill?
01:32:33I mean he was the one who examined her
01:32:39Take care of the girl I
01:32:43Can't you can and you will
01:32:46Or you'll go to jail for the rest of your life for murder
01:32:50Gus did you she was dead?
01:32:54No, she wasn't
01:32:58Doctor
01:33:00Not only am I going to kill you but the police are gonna find some wonderfully obscene photographs of you with this child
01:33:09Warren no, I won't do that. I'm a physician
01:33:28Oh
01:33:58Oh
01:34:07It's over man
01:34:09We got him for murder. We got evidence from Mexico. We got Kruger talking his head off. You don't understand man
01:34:15I understand I do you hate him you want to see him dead, but then you become part of the problem. I don't care
01:34:23You do you care?
01:34:29You care about her you care about all the other kids up here
01:34:37Alex my friend, please
01:34:58I
01:35:28I
01:35:58You
