00:27Top 10 Most Dangerous Children's Toys Ever Made.
00:32So guys, first up, before we get started on our Top 10 today,
00:36I want to hear from you.
00:37What was your favorite toy when you were growing up and why?
00:40Let me know in the comments below.
00:42So today's Top 10 is Top 10 Most Dangerous Children's Toys Ever Made.
00:47Now a little fact for you guys,
00:49I actually used to work as a princess in the world's biggest toy store.
00:53So you can trust in me, I am a toy expert delivering you this news
00:57of essentially what is a Top 10 list of what not to get kids for Christmas.
01:01So launching in at number 10 is the Cabbage Patch Snack Time Kids Doll.
01:06How would you feel about buying your child a child eating doll?
01:11Not good, right?
01:12Mhm.
01:13Released in 1996, the Cabbage Patch Snack Time Doll was a doll that simulated eating.
01:20Now this doll came with a range of things that you could stick in its mouth.
01:23It had fake fries, it had a fake banana.
01:25Hooray!
01:26A doll that looks like it's eating, what more could you possibly want?
01:29I guess your finger intact would be one of those things.
01:32Not just hungry for fake fries, these dolls were hungry for fingers.
01:36Kids, you know kids, right?
01:38They'll stick their little fingers into stuff.
01:40This doll didn't know what was a fake banana and what was an actual finger.
01:44Often this resulted in the dolls clamping down on the kids fingers and they couldn't get them out.
01:49Other problems involved kids getting their hair stuck in the doll.
01:52One kid almost went bald when the Cabbage Patch Kid chewed up their hair.
01:57It had to be cut off, this is not ideal.
01:59What would be a useful invention with this doll?
02:01I hear you cry.
02:02Maybe an on off button?
02:03But no such thing was invented.
02:05This meant that this doll just kept on chomping.
02:07After over 100 complaints, this doll was recalled and $40 refunds were issued.
02:13Flying in at number 9, I think that's a 9.
02:16I have personal experience with these she devils.
02:19These are Sky Dancers and these are a nightmare.
02:24So the Sky Dancers were released in the mid 90s, the perfect time for me being a kid to play with them.
02:29What more could you want?
02:30Oh, a beautiful fairy that can be launched off like a moon or a dolphin or a butterfly.
02:35Sign me up.
02:36By pulling a cord, kids would unleash these hellish helicopters, sorry Sky Dancers,
02:42and they would dance across the room, only I found they would often dance right into your face.
02:47Both my sister and I had one of these and we would actually use them as weapons to each other,
02:52like shots fired, Sky Dancer, go!
02:54These Sky Dancers were absolute chaos.
02:57If they didn't hit you in the face, they may smash your lighting fixtures or incite your family pets.
03:02The dogs did not like the Sky Dancers.
03:04After 6 years on the market and over 100 injuries, these were finally recalled in June 2000.
03:10Good riddance Sky Dancer.
03:12Flaming in at number 8, it is the Austin Magic Pistol.
03:17This toy from the 1950s makes me laugh so much.
03:20It would be totally horrifying if this fireball launcher was released today, but heck, it was the 50s.
03:27Now this is the kind of toy that your parents or grandparents probably played with.
03:31The Austin Magic Pistol allowed kids to fire flame balls at one another that they definitely did not aim at one another's crotches.
03:39No.
03:40Balls were fired by mixing magic crystals and water in the back of the gun.
03:44I hasten to add that these magic crystals were like, you know, pretty serious chemicals that could have killed the kids had they eaten them.
03:51Not to mention fireball being fired. Goodness me.
03:56Sliding in at number 7 is the Slip N Slide.
04:00Now I for one am totally shocked that this is even a thing that's on the market.
04:04Not because it's dangerous, which it kind of is,
04:06but you can totally make this at home, or the kids don't make this at home,
04:09and if you do, make sure your parents are supervising you.
04:12Couple of bin bags, a garden hose, you're ready.
04:15So the Slip N Slide, first released in the 1960s, was most dangerous for adults and bigger kids.
04:21Now the Slip N Slide was made for smaller kids.
04:24It was a long sheet of plastic that had a hole to accommodate a garden hose.
04:28The kids would run, take a jump, and then they would slide to the end of that sheet.
04:32Perfect.
04:33Unfortunately, some overzealous sliders have injured themselves quite seriously when using this toy.
04:39Problems have occurred when thrill seekers attach the slide to a bottom of a regular slide,
04:44meaning the force in which they hit the plastic becomes greater,
04:48and they skid with much further force, increasing the likelihood of injuries.
04:52Now the slide has reportedly been the cause of 7 adults and one 13-year-old suffering severe neck injuries and paralysis.
05:00Not okay.
05:02In at number 6, the CSI Fingerprinting Examination Kit.
05:06I mean, it's all fun and games until you realize you're playing with asbestos.
05:10The 2007 CSI Fingerprint Examining Kit allowed kids to use a white powder and a special brush to look for fingerprints.
05:19Unfortunately, that white powder was found to contain as much as 7% tremolite.
05:24Now this is one of the most deadliest forms of asbestos.
05:28These toys were made by the now bankrupt Planet Toys and licensed by television giant CBS.
05:33Tests conducted by the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization in 2007 showed that results were extremely shocking.
05:417% asbestos in that white powder.
05:43Although this was apparently not shocking enough for CBS to recall the product,
05:47it took them 20 months after the asbestos was found to do so.
05:51So for those of you thinking, oh, asbestos, what's the big deal?
05:55If you inhale asbestos, there is a very strong likelihood that you will get cancer.
05:59Hopefully all of the kids that use this kit are going to be okay.
06:03In at number 5, our halfway point.
06:06This is something that pretty much all kids have experienced at some point in their life.
06:10What toy is this?
06:11It is the trampoline.
06:12Sold in stores such as Toys R Us, trampolines are marketed at kids as a fun, friendly family activity.
06:19However, they can be severely dangerous.
06:21They have led to broken limbs and sometimes even death.
06:24Figures from the UK suggest that up to 50% of accidents and emergency visits for under 14 year olds are trampoline related.
06:31It is estimated in the US that there are around 35,000 trampoline injuries in kids under the age of 14 every year.
06:40So I actually have a personal experience of losing a friend after a trampoline accident, so you need to be safe.
06:47Trampolines with the nets are the safest,
06:49but this doesn't resolve the issue of kids bouncing into one another and smacking their heads on trampolines.
06:55I would say the best trampoline is a supervised trampoline.
06:58In at number 4, the Gilbert Home Chemistry Set.
07:01Now would you wrap up some sulfuric acid, gun powder, some ammonium chloride for your kids?
07:07I guess kids in the 1950s got to have all of the fun with this whimsical chemistry set.
07:12Chemicals for kids?
07:14No, obviously.
07:16Now the Gilbert Chemistry Set contained some ridiculous corrosives and even some carcinogenics.
07:21With the kit, kids were able to make explosions, do various experiments.
07:26Rest assured, it wasn't safe.
07:28To be totally fair, there aren't very many reports of kids abusing this product.
07:32Not very many were injured.
07:33Maybe kids back in the 1960s were a lot safer.
07:37So as we reach the top 3 spots of our top 10 most dangerous children's toys ever made,
07:42I have to warn you that the top 3 are occupied by toys that have known to kill.
07:46So in at number 3, we have the Kite Tube.
07:49The Kite Tube was released in 2006 and was basically so, so dangerous that it had to be recalled.
07:54The Kite Tube is basically a diggy that you attach to a boat.
07:57This can be sat in and works like a cross between a waterboard and a paraglide.
08:02As the boat goes faster, the kite goes up.
08:04Now unfortunately, those in the kite aren't properly secured.
08:08And as the speedboat goes forward, the kite has the potentiality to reach up to 65 feet in the air.
08:14This has led to many, many kids falling out and severely injuring themselves.
08:18There are some absolutely insane videos that have been posted on YouTube of kite tube accidents,
08:23and I've got to say, you know, this is really, really scary.
08:26In its year of release, the Kite Tube reportedly caused 39 injuries and 3 deaths.
08:31Getting even more dangerous here at number 2 with the Water Yo-Yo.
08:36Now, I think yo-yos are dangerous enough.
08:38I, for one, managed to smash a lightbulb in my mum's house whilst using a yo-yo when I was a kid.
08:43But they absolutely multiply in danger when you bring a water yo-yo on the situation.
08:49Made from a stretchy plastic, they can easily get caught around children's necks.
08:53Now, six-year-old Justice Moran was one of the many children almost killed by a water yo-yo.
08:58Justice got the cord of a yo-yo ball wrapped around his neck six times.
09:03His mum said his eyes were rolling in the back of his head, he was foaming at the mouth, his legs were jumping up and down.
09:09Now, he spent the night in a hospital getting treatment for near strangulation.
09:13In 2007 alone, there were almost 300 reports of mild strangulation from these water yo-yos.
09:20In some scenarios, this stretchy plastic almost caused suffocation.
09:23There is even a website dedicated to the dangers of water yo-yos, and that is dangerofwateryo-yos.weebly.com.
09:31Luckily, these are now banned from stores.
09:33So guys, we have reached that point in our Most Amazing Top 10 where we are nearing the number one spot.
09:39So, let's recap on what we had in our Top 10 Most Dangerous Children's Toys Ever Made.
09:44We've had a child eating doll, a devil sky dancer, fire gun slip and slides, trampolines, chemical sets with corrosives, killer kite tubes, strangling water yo-yos.
09:56But what could possibly be so dangerous is in our number one spot.
10:01It is Jarts.
10:03Now, there's a reason we don't let kids play with javelins.
10:06Do you know javelins, used as like a medieval weapon?
10:09You throw them, they spear, people die.
10:12Yeah, so what genius came up with the garden dart, aka the Jart.
10:17Now, the Jart are essentially funky covered javelins marketed at kids and families.
10:23The Jart has been directly responsible for over 7,000 injuries and three deaths.
10:29In 1987, Michelle Snow was accidentally killed by her brother when he threw a Jart too far and it pierced her skull.
10:37Her father, David, was so enraged that he tried to get them banned.
10:41Instead of banning them, warnings were placed on the box, but this did not help.
10:46In 1988, when an 11-year-old girl in Texas was so badly injured by a Jart that she went into a coma, they were finally taken off the shelf.
10:54So guys, some of these have been extremely dangerous.
10:57I really hasten to add that you should never play with them if you see them.
11:00That was our Top 10 Most Dangerous Children's Toys Ever Made.
11:05Did I leave anything out? Let me know in the comments below.
