Anwar: Islamic world doesn't need Western lessons on democracy and human rights

  • last month
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that western countries do not need to teach the Muslim world about the meaning of democracy, human rights and sustainable development.

Speaking at the All-Malaysian Mosque Summit for Al-Aqsa and Palestine (MM4AP) Conference on Sunday (Aug 25), Anwar urged Western nations to cease their attempts to manipulate international media to promote misleading narratives about the conflict in Gaza, Palestine.

He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to barring companies registered in Israel from operating or conducting any activities within the country.

00:00The struggle against injustice, inhumanity, aggression, colonialism must be consistent
00:20and well understood and not a political gimmick, played around in terms of political aspirations
00:28but not consistent in terms of their action. Of course questions and criticisms are being
00:37raised, why we still engage or trade with companies that has some interest in Israel.
00:48I make no apologies, as I have alerted our friends in Palestine, in the Arab world, Iran,
01:02that trade and investments must continue in order to strengthen our economic base, our
01:11economic fundamentals and to strengthen our capacity to struggle for complete independence,
01:18economic independence, although there is of course interdependence. Then only can we raise
01:27our standard of living, our capacity to be effective in the international community.
01:34I say this in a blunt way, sometimes we are misled by vulgar slogans, using the issue of Palestine
01:49and Gaza as a political threat. I want to say here, it is not possible like that.
01:56Sacrificed lives, destruction happens every day. It is not possible for us to allow people
02:07who have compassion to make this issue as a political game. It must be done as much as possible
02:19to save our country. Sometimes the people who are the most aggressive, opposing Israel's
02:25cruelty, still allow direct trade with Israeli companies, as it happens in our beloved country.
02:33That is why under the Madani government, under the Jumaah Menteri, this decision was made.
02:41The voice of the Jumaah Menteri agreed to stop all forms of direct trade.
02:54Then, those who are involved in allowing direct trade with Israel, then discuss with us
03:03because there is a relationship with several companies that have a relationship with Israel.
03:08I do not deny it. And I state that if we want to rise up, according to the experience of
03:15Salhuddin Al Ayyubi, as a strong country, we have to use wisdom, know our strength,
03:23our heart, and use it to build inner strength. And not only to oppose Sembrono
03:32but also to weaken our art of membership. The people who oppose us in terms of trade with
03:40any company, must answer why, when they are involved in power, allow direct trade with
03:51Zim and Israeli companies. That is for me a key issue that must be answered.
03:57Therefore, I do not want to use this space just to explain some of it.
04:04But we have to emphasize this because we have to be united, united in one voice.
04:15And this issue is a cruel assassination issue that has not happened in the world recently.
04:23Only on the Palestinian people of Gaza. Therefore, I say that the voice must be one.
04:34And we as a government and as Prime Ministers, I know the risks.
04:41I know the safety factors, both personally and nationally.
04:45But give us the space to take the necessary steps. With wisdom, with hope,
04:59God willing, we will be safe and will not sacrifice the interests of the country.
