Anthony Duclair Cuts Hair for NY Islanders' Policy

00:00So, yesterday, the newest member of the New York Islanders, Anthony DuClaire, put out
00:09an Instagram post, social media post, wherever it was, of him cutting his hair.
00:15Now, if people don't know, Lou Lammarillo has had this policy for every team he has
00:23ever been involved with since the dawn of time.
00:26New York Islanders, Maple Leafs, New Jersey Devils.
00:29He got it from the Yankees, who also still have this policy in place that you cannot
00:34have long hair, you cannot have beards, you cannot have all this stuff that goes on.
00:38Do I think it's a good policy, Gabe?
00:40I think it's, in today's day and age, probably archaic and stupid and unnecessary.
00:45I really don't think it matters anymore if the guys have their hair long or whatever.
00:49But Lou does, and that's the way it goes.
00:50So everybody has started now a firestorm because Anthony DuClaire put that post up
00:57with the little crying emoji, joking around, I guess you can say, that he had to cut his
01:02hair off.
01:03Gabe, he willingly signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the New York Islanders,
01:09knowing that that was part of the job, right?
01:13When you go to a team like that, that's laid out on the table when you go there.
01:18It's not like he was traded there, and they're forcing him to do it.
01:21It's kind of how it is.
01:23But everybody's up in arms now, Gabe, about it.
01:25Well, it's become a story because the media likes stories that involve race, right?
01:33Whether there's something to it or not, it's clickbait, and it immediately sends people
01:40into one corner or another.
01:43And if you have an opinion anywhere else in between, then you're a monster.
01:49And I feel bad for Anthony DuClaire, who's a good guy, who has had to deal with jerk
01:54coaches and a racist hockey system.

02:02Hockey has had issues.
02:03There have been black players before that have been told, you look too black, right?

02:11You know what?
02:12A lot of players have gone through coaches don't like their hair.
02:15They don't mind the white guy with the long beard, right, and the crazy wild hair.
02:20So there have been instances of this, especially in junior hockey and youth hockey.
02:24So that's what's disappointing about it, because you're making a story out of something that's
02:30not there, right?
02:32And now it overshadows real stories.
02:35You know what I'm saying?
02:36When a real story comes up, then people are so one way or the other now with everything,

02:43So as you stated, it's a stupid rule, and I think it's ridiculous.
02:47I think it's, you know, I get it, the Yankees, whatever, you know what I mean?
02:53Like, you know, they think that, you know, it's somehow, you know, you reflect the organization
02:59and all that, but that's an organization's choice, right?
03:05And it's an archaic one right now.
03:07I don't think it helps you win.
03:09And as I tweeted earlier, if I was a GM in the NHL, Carver, one of the first things I
03:13would tell the players is, you don't need to wear suits, by the way.
03:16If you want to wear a suit, wear a suit, but, you know, this isn't Wall Street here, okay?
03:22And even Wall Street's ridiculous.
03:23So there's a little suit stuff, but the NHL, they're sort of like the parents, Carver.
03:29You know, listen, my grandfather played in the NHL, was a hockey guy, and same thing,
03:34man.
03:35Like, you put a Metallica t-shirt on, and you're untrustworthy.
03:37You put a suit on, and he's willing to, you know what I mean, give you his, you could
03:41be his accountant.
03:43And that's the way, you know, these old-timers think.
03:46But I feel bad for DeClaire, because his name is up there everywhere, and as you stated,
03:50he wasn't complaining.
03:51He was having fun with it.
03:53And it's Gordon Miller, too.
03:54He's a great play-by-play guy.
03:56Gordon's been around a long time.
03:57He's one of the best in the business.
03:59And he tweeted out, this is, you know, cultural inappropriation.
04:03It's just, it's wrong to ask someone, you know, it's culturally.
04:07And I'm almost thinking, that's almost semi-racist to say what, because he's black, it's cult-like,

04:13Like, and the thing is, like I said, Carver, I respect everybody and their rights, but
04:18he's not like some die-hard Rastafarian that's been growing dreads since he's like six years old.
