A new hotel in the historic fruit exchange building in the heart of Liverpool city centre has been given the go-ahead

00:06been given the go-ahead.
00:08First used as a railway goods depot, the long-vacant Grade 2 listed site on Victoria Street is
00:12set to be given a new lease of life.
00:15Developer JSM Company Group has won the backing of Liverpool Council's planning committee
00:18to bring the building back into use.
00:20The proposals include a bar area which would be accessed from Matthew Street, opening up
00:24to the general public.
00:25The applicant intends to convert the upper floors of the listed building into a hotel.
00:30The works include internal and external alterations, the insertion of a mezzanine level on the
00:35top floor of the Matthew Street wing with associated rear extensions and a small extension
00:39into a rear light well.
00:41The historic main auction room would be used as an event space within the hotel.
00:45The building began life as a railway goods depot in 1888, before being converted into
00:49a Fruit Exchange in 1923.
00:52The building's architectural and historical interest led to it being recognised in its
00:56designation as a Grade 2 listed site.
