00:00The moor and other shopping streets around Sheffield city centre are almost unrecognisable
00:05now compared to how they looked in decades gone by. One of these shops in particular was
00:10Walsh's department store which sat on the high street opposite where the castle square tram stop
00:15is now. From a small baby linen and ladies outfitting shop in 1875 it grew in its over a
00:22century of business into a large department store and offered silks, dresses, millinery, ribbons,
00:29laces, medicine, stationery and even opened a cabinet making factory on Pinfold Street.
00:37The business was taken over by Harrods in 1946 and Harrods was then taken over by House of Fraser
00:4413 years later. Ultimately Walsh's shut its doors in 1998 and the street level part of the building
00:51is now recognisable as Poundland, British Heart Foundation and Sports Direct.
