Is Mike McDaniel trying to make things difficult for his backup QB's by putting them in stressful situations? Willie Snead IV placed on IR.
Transcript
00:00Oh, did you guys hear like micro Danny yesterday? Try and uh, like explain how he's trying to
00:04make things awful for his backup quarterbacks. Because I felt like that was hocus pocus,
00:08verbal jujitsu. No, is this, is this him not wanting to see, uh, any success from Mike
00:15White as well? I don't know. He was just like, ah, it doesn't help me if they're in good
00:18positions. I'm like, are you sure you're just not saying that because they've looked bad
00:24and so you're like, well, it's on me. I put them in really, really, really bad position.
00:27Are they going to switch them this week? And they didn't switch them last week. I know.
00:33I know that's, you know, but I think he felt bad for Mike White cause Mike White had a
00:38wide receiver playing running back. But the whole point of it is you have, in order to
00:42evaluate somebody, you have to put them in the same circumstance unless you've already
00:47made up. Not according to him. He thinks that if it just makes it, uh, he wants to, he wants
00:51to put them in the most stressful situations. I would, um, really, right. The reason why
00:58they're backups is because when they've been in those stressful situations, it didn't work
01:02out well. That's true. Right. So why would you, like, if you did it to tour to see how
01:08he like, Hey, these are the moments in during the season or a game, things are going to
01:12happen, you know, like get through it. But the backup guys, you want them to feel comfortable
01:18so you can see what you can and can't do it. Not according to him. He's a, he's a master
01:22manipulator. Apparently, quite honestly, what the approach that, that I've kind of taken
01:27is to create super difficult situations for both of them. And as that manifests, you know,
01:35that's whether the play calling choice, um, the, uh, the, the situations, um, that I'm
01:42asking, um, you know, maybe them to do a certain things specifically to put them in
01:49difficult situations, because what are we really trying to evaluate? We're trying to
01:54evaluate who's best to serve, um, handling a difficult situation inherent in being a
02:00backup quarterback is that you are in a difficult situation, uh, whether that's in game or starting
02:07a game, you know? Uh, and so we thought it was most appropriate to do that. And, um,
02:13how that's presented itself, uh, in practice is I've gotten a ton of information and there's
02:22so many different nuances that I'm trying to focus on, on a given, on a, on a given
02:28day and then carrying that message to the game. And it's, it's a, it's much broader
02:33than do we go down as an offense and score. Um, it's, it's quite literally handling difficult
02:41situations and then saying, Hey, you have to go, um, do this. Uh, I'm going to call
02:47this play probably against a non-premier coverage. Um, and, uh, let's see what you do. Um, I'm
02:56going to, you're going to play a, a quarter, um, with, uh, with a receiver playing running
03:03back. How, how do you, how do you respond?
03:07Speaker 3 When is that going to happen? There's only one other person that makes me cuss and
03:17that's you. But after that nonsense we just heard, I want to cuss. I just want to be clear
03:23here. Just so we're clear, might be Daniel planned. Chris Brooks getting a concussion
03:28planned is running back. And you know what? And I think that's the whole thing. I need this to
03:35look good. I need to know he's like, Hey, you think I wanted to put them in this situation?
03:39Like it just got to happen. Hey, uh, Chris, I need to get to really, I don't really know
03:45if Mike could handle if Tyree killed it by running back. So I need you to act a little
03:53so I could put the FAU kid at it running back. We're going to see how he handles that.
03:59Cause he goes, meanwhile, you're meanwhile your poor quarterbacks are getting killed.
04:05So I like if he's, you know what? Patrick Paul wasn't tired. Mike told him to take a dive. He
04:11goes, listen, Patrick, Patrick, I need to know who can really hold onto the football when they get
04:17wrecked on their blind side. So here's what you're going to do. You're not playing this year
04:21anywhere. Who cares? Right? You're going to look a little slow on the feet. And I'm going to see
04:26if Mike, Mike white holds onto this football. Jeez. Listen to me. We're going to put, I can
04:32wear your left tackle. He's multifaceted. This guy is this, this guy is, see, this is the thing.
04:42Like he goes above and beyond to protect his players. He's like, we both, we all realized
04:47these guys, you know, now are we putting way too much focus on this? Yes. A hundred percent.
04:52And, and the fact that he just went on for five minutes. Yeah. Do you know who the backup
04:56quarterback is for the bills? No. Do you know who the backup quarterback is for the jets jets?
05:02No, I don't. Yeah. Neither do I. Then why are we, why are we, wait, wait, wait.
05:08Who's currently Patrick Mullen's backup?
05:10I don't know. It's not Chad. No, it's not Chad. Not Chad. Eddie, you're retired.
05:16These are good questions though. I feel like we did this before. And the backup quarterback
05:20was surprising. The only backup quarterbacks I know in this league right now are the dude
05:25Minshew just beat out. How should I show you? I didn't know Connell just because he just lost.
05:29What's his name? Just went to Philly, the jets quarterback.
05:34In the jets quarterback in Philly. Which one? The, uh, the mill punter. No, he's in Denver.
05:43Yeah. Zach Wilson's in Denver. Okay. Uh, I think Kenny Pickett is their back. Can you pick it?
05:47There it is. I knew somebody Kenny Pickett. Yeah. I know Mack Jones was in Jacksonville
05:50because he's a loser. Carson Wentz. Wow. Carson Wentz is backed up in Kansas city.
05:55In Kansas city.
06:01So, but wait, you brought this up. What do you mean? Mitchell Drabisky backup quarterback in
06:07Buffalo. He's still, we're still hanging on Drabisky. So yeah, barely. So no. So yesterday
06:15Huck and Carter said, Huck said, uh, Colt McCoy retiring after 13 years. Right. He played 55 games.
06:25In 13 years. And I said, I sent him a text. I said, at that rate,
06:31he would have to play 32 years of NFL football to make, play the same amount of games I played.
06:37And he made 10 times the amount of money I made. Right. What a life, man. If you go into the NFL
06:43with the goal of, I'm going to be a second string quarterback or like a third string guy on the
06:48roster. Pretty good. Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, come here. What's up coach. All right. I'm
06:54gonna let you go in for this series. All right. I'm gonna let you have Jalen Waddle, but I'm gonna
07:00kick your right. Why are you doing it? I need to know if you can tolerate it, you know, play
07:06through some adversity. What's your pain threshold. I'm gonna kick you right in the shin. Tyrod Taylor
07:10for the jets. Tyrod Taylor backup. Yeah, he is. Yeah. I'm not gonna lie. I'm looking at the backup
07:17situation across, across. Right. Why are we making a big deal about it? Why do we care about Ryan?
07:22You got to have a Trubisky, a Trubisky or a Tyrod Taylor. I think I may. Really? Are they not the
07:30same? Is Skylar Thompson, Mitchell Trubisky. It was actually a whole lot. Pretty mobile.
07:36The only reason why you care about Mitchell Trubisky because he was the second pick in the
07:40draft. Yeah. So probably has the highest ceiling, but then why is he going for pedigree? Why is it
07:44backup Trubisky? Because he's not better than Josh Allen. But if Josh Allen goes down because he runs
07:51a lot. No, because listen, whoa, whoa, whoa. Listen to this. 40 times. When you have an opportunity
07:56to sign for a quarterback, it's crazy. You first see if there's a place I can go where I have an
08:02opportunity to win the job. Yeah. Right. None of those existed. So then he went and became a backup.
08:10Correct. So all the other 31 teams. Said they would rather just do what they doing instead of
08:18kick the tires on Mitchell Trubisky as a starter. That's why he's a backup. Yeah. Well,
08:23four or six though. Four or six. Yeah. It was what? That was the 40. He could scoot. That's
08:29not fast for a quarterback. I'm pretty good. How many tangibles hit four, six? Come on.
08:38Now we know. Now we got speed on the scale.
08:42That's why you guys get so excited about Bonner. Yes. Well, Bonner, I think is actually like a
08:47four, three guy. Yeah. But that's yes, for sure. A normal four, three guy. I'm just like, okay,
08:52this is a normal football player. Ethan Bonner, white light. You know, there's a lot of,
08:58there's a, there's a lot of players who have been great, who weren't conserved fast.
09:06Yeah. Well, were they white though?
09:08I mean, Wes Welker. Oh, it wasn't fast routes. Yeah. Oh yeah. Hey,
09:17Scott, Scott, Scott, Scott, come here. What's up coach. I don't want you to go in. All right. I'm
09:22actually actually going to give you a running back. Oh, thanks coach. But first off you got
09:27to give Calais Campbell a piggyback ride. That a boy. If you try to give Calais Campbell a piggyback
09:35ride, his legs would be on the ground. Don't lose. Right. Classic.
09:45Well, you know what? I blame Mike McDaniel for this. You know why? Why? Because all that nonsense
09:51he just talked. Now this is how Tobin's talk. And I got to deal with this. Don't just give
09:56shorter answers. What I've decided for the quarterback competition is we're going to play
10:00American Ninja Warrior. You know, it's interesting. You talked about Dolphins roster
10:11moves yesterday. Yeah. And you said old Twitter fingers is gone. Yeah. I thought you were talking
10:17about Blake Ferguson. Oh, the long snapper. I was like the long snapper. No, but then when
10:22he explained, we're like, Oh yeah. No Willie Sneed got put on some fake IR. I don't know what
10:29he's gone though. He's gone. He's gone. What's crazy about that is did he even play? He was out
10:36there. He was out there. He was, he was playing with Mike White. That's how, that's how Mike
10:39McDaniel made it hard on him. That's when you know, you know what, even as, even as a pro, I knew
10:44when I moved up to, you know, it's like in college when you're on the travel squad and you ain't got
10:50to run scout team, that means you're, you're getting closer to the starting job to play.
10:54Right. When you get, listen, when you go from say fourth quarter to second quarter,
11:02you're like, okay, they want to see what I got. Willie, Willie, get over here. Hey, what's up
11:06coach? I need you to go run a route for Mike White, but while you're doing it, I need you
11:10to tweet bad things about to it while you're on those routes. Why coach? You know, I, I,
11:17I anticipated this question. So here's the other thing.
11:23Um, how are we feeling? Because there's still, they, they signed a couple of running backs, but
11:30it's only for space. I think it's to get through this game. Right. That's what I'm saying. I'm not
11:35worried about it now. Still got a lot of decisions you got to make. I think, uh, I think Jeff Wilson,
11:40I think he has a broken nose or something like that. Yeah. But again, everybody, um,
11:46there's still a lot of decisions have to be made in the running back room and why receiver. So
11:52right now, here's what they're trying to figure out.
11:57Can we use one of these young guys as a return guy? Because then we don't need Branson burials.
12:08I think the only guy that probably, but I'm just saying the guy, the guy that I think the guy
12:13they've tried on punts is the, uh, the was the six round pick Malik Washington. Yeah. But I don't
12:18know. Right. And then, and these are the kinds of decisions because they're going to bring in
12:25probably another offensive lineman and another defensive lineman at some point,
12:30right. Whether it's, you know, um, but for all the other, but you got a lot of, I don't understand
12:38how all the wide receivers you have and nobody's playing. I know all the running
12:42backs you have and nobody's playing. I know. Right. So, uh, where are we with that? Great
12:47practice for the tight ends, tight, tight ends have been actually pretty good. Like I was, I knew
12:57that they were going to use John new Smith that way, but I didn't know he was going to look
13:02that fluid. He looks great. He does. He looks very athletic. I love when they do that little flip
13:08pass. It's my favorite. I love when they just do the handoff and just let him get the ball on the
13:13sweep. Yeah. The shovel, the little, yeah. Yeah. But it's like, it doesn't even look like a, it's
13:18like a, yeah. Like it's like a hot potato. Can I just tell you that is I've done those dangerous
13:24game. It will, because with the shovel pass, you're close to the line of scrimmage. You got
13:29to look at the football. So just think about less than two yards away, you got a thousand pounds of
13:35meat ready to knock you out. And you got to turn your back to him and look at the football. I
13:41always hate, I even, I sometimes hated screen passes because you got to look back and you can't
13:47see what's coming at you. Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, what coach? All right. You're going to go out for
13:54the series, but you've been staring down your receivers. So what I want you to do head on a
13:58swivel and put a bumblebee in your helmet. Classic. But wait, if Mike is going to reply,
14:08you are a bumblebee in my helmet. That's not Mike McDaniel's way.
