00:00How did you kind of venture between that pressure to, one,
00:04make the fans happy, two, make the author happy,
00:06and also make something that's your own?
00:09I knew that there was no way I wasn't
00:12going to disappoint fans of the book with some decision I made,
00:16whether or not it was to sort of choose
00:19to exclude things from the book or change things from the book.
00:24I knew that small disappointments were inevitable,
00:28but I was willing to risk those in order
00:32to create sort of like a much more
00:36broad and macro enjoyment of the film by the fans.
00:39I was like really protecting the ultimate experience.
00:42The thing that I kept coming back to
00:44was this thing is going to look different from the book.
00:47This thing is going to operate different from the book.
00:49But what was most important to me is at the end of the film,
00:53people had the same feeling that they
00:55had at the end of the book.
