01:15Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the military incursion into Russia's
01:19Kursk region aims to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across
01:24the border.
01:25It's the first time Zelensky has stated the aim of the military operation, which was launched
01:30on August 6.
01:33He
01:57also used his nightly video address to appeal to international allies to speed up deliveries
02:03of military hardware for the battlefield.
02:07Zelensky's comments come on the same day the Ukrainian military released footage showing
02:11what it said was the destruction of a key bridge in Kursk, the second such bridge struck
02:16in less than two weeks.
02:18Destroying the bridges could disrupt Russia's supply routes and might signal that Ukraine
02:23has intentions for its troops to dig in.
02:27The Ukrainian military operation has seen Kiev's forces seize several villages, take
02:32hundreds of prisoners and force the evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians in what's
02:37become the largest attack on Russia since World War II.
02:41In more than a week of fighting, Russian troops are still struggling to drive out Ukraine's
02:46forces.
02:47Kiev also hopes the operation will change the dynamic of the more than two-year-old
02:52conflict.
03:00U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Tel Aviv to try to seal a ceasefire
03:05deal between Israel and Hamas to end more than 10 months of war.
03:10The evolving proposal calls for a three-phase process in which Hamas would release all hostages
03:15abducted during its October 7 incursion into Israel.
03:20In exchange, Israel would withdraw its forces from Gaza and release Palestinian prisoners.
03:26And Hamas, which didn't participate directly in the talks, has signaled resistance to what
03:30it calls new demands by Israel.
03:33But Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of sabotaging efforts to reach
03:38a ceasefire.
03:53As Blinken touched down in Tel Aviv, Israeli authorities showed journalists their preparations
03:58for any attack in the northern port city of Haifa.
04:02Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group has launched drones and rockets into Israel on a near daily
04:07basis since the start of the war, and Israel has responded with air strikes and artillery.
04:13We have been preparing for an attack and we are ready for anything.
04:16There are diplomatic attempts to de-escalate the situation, but we are ready for everything
04:23and anything on any front.
04:25Meanwhile, at least one person was killed and another injured after a bomb exploded
04:30in Tel Aviv on Sunday evening, according to Israeli police.
04:34That explosion happened as health officials in Gaza said 29 people had been killed in
04:39the strip overnight and into Sunday.
04:46Factions across the world responded to a call from their country's political opposition,
04:52the Democratic Unity Platform, and took to the streets to defend the faction's claim
04:57to victory over President Nicolas Maduro in last month's disputed presidential election.
05:05In Lisbon, protesters showed copies of the election results presented by the opposition,
05:11which gave 67% of the votes to Edmundo Gonzalez, more than 7.3 million votes, and only 30%
05:21to Maduro, who will have won 3.3 million votes.
05:26Demonstrators also called on worldwide governments to show their support behind Gonzalez and
05:32express support to Venezuelans who are fearful in their home country of speaking against
05:37Maduro and his allies.
05:46India's medical workers have begun a nationwide strike to protest the rape and killing of
05:51a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in West Bengal state.
05:56The strike was called by the Indian Medical Association, which said all non-essential
06:01services at hospitals would be shut down across the country for 24 hours.
06:20On August 9, police discovered the body of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the state-run
06:25RG Khar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
06:29A police volunteer working at the hospital has been detained in connection with the crime,
06:33but the family of the victim alleges it was a gang rape.
06:37An autopsy confirmed sexual assault had taken place.
06:46Ukraine offers a rare look inside a detention center housing Russian troops captured in
06:52battle.
06:53As dozens of prisoners of war were seen at the center, Vadim, the deputy head of education
06:58work at the prison, describes the conditions the inmates live in.
07:28According to the facility's officials, more than 300 captives have passed through the
07:42center since the start of Ukraine's Kursk incursion, 80% of them being conscripts, whilst
07:48many soldiers showed little resistance when taken captive, according to the center.
07:54It remains unclear how many Russian soldiers were captured by Ukrainian troops during their
08:00raid in Kursk.
08:06Heavy rains have lashed alpine regions of Austria, leaving parts of the capital Vienna
08:11underwater.
08:13Local media say downpours have caused severe damage in parts of the country and disrupted
08:18road and rail transport.
08:21National broadcaster ORF said that a woman was dragged under a bus by the force of flooding
08:26in the Dörbling area in the north of Vienna and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
08:32The amount of rain to fall on Vienna is the highest since records began more than 150
08:37years ago.
08:39Meanwhile, clean-up operations in St. Anton continue, with trucks and excavators working
08:46to remove the mud and gravel from the road and the village.
08:50The A-road to Arlberg remains closed and a decision on when to reopen it will be taken
08:55on Monday.
08:56St. Anton's mayor says the clean-up operation will take weeks to complete and volunteers
09:20will help clean houses in the village.
09:29An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 has struck off the far eastern coast
09:35of Russia near a major naval base.
09:39The quake happened after two volcanoes erupted in the Kuril Islands on Sunday.
09:44The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially warned that hazardous tsunami waves were possible
09:50for coasts within 480 kilometers of the epicenter.
09:55There have been no reports of any casualties.

10:44Dozens of aircraft and ground vehicles have been dispatched to both sites, with nearly
