00:00 President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accuses Russia of weaponizing everything from food to energy
00:04 to children in its war against Ukraine during his address to the United Nations General
00:09 Assembly.
00:11 Azerbaijan launches a so-called anti-terrorist operation in the Nagorno-Karabakh region,
00:16 sparking fears of renewed conflict.
00:20 Critics of the EU`s plans aimed at preventing online child abuse say it`s a major violation
00:25 of people`s privacy.
00:30 A major slowdown in German manufacturing is dragging down Europe`s economic growth, according
00:36 to projections from the OECD.
00:44 With Russia in the spotlight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to the podium at
00:48 the annual United Nations General Assembly in New York.
00:53 In his first direct address to the body since the start of Russia`s full-scale invasion
00:57 of his country last year, Zelenskyy slammed Moscow`s actions and the threat its nuclear
01:02 arsenal posed to his nation and the world.
01:05 "Terrorists have no right to hold nuclear weapons.
01:11 No right.
01:14 But truly, not the nukes are the scariest now.
01:18 Real nukes remain in place.
01:26 The mass destruction is gaining its momentum."
01:27 Zelenskyy then accused Russia of blackmailing the globe with food.
01:30 "And it is a clear Russia`s attempt to weaponize the food shortage on the global market in
01:40 exchange for recognition for some, if not all, of the captured territories."
01:47 He also highlighted the energy crisis and the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia,
01:52 something he labeled a genocide.
01:54 Zelenskyy said he would present the details of his peace plan to the Security Council
01:58 on Wednesday.
02:00 U.S. President Joe Biden has called on world leaders to stand up to what he called Russian
02:07 aggression and to continue to support Ukraine.
02:11 Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Biden said if Russian`s invasion
02:16 was not opposed by the world community, no nation`s sovereignty would be secure.
02:21 "Russia believes that the world will grow weary and allow it to brutalize Ukraine without
02:28 consequence.
02:29 But I ask you this, if we abandon the core principles of the United States to appease
02:35 an aggressor, can any member state in this body feel confident that they are protected?
02:44 If we allow Ukraine to be carved up, is the independence of any nation secure?
02:51 I respectfully suggest the answer is no."
02:55 War in Ukraine is far from the world`s only crisis.
02:58 The United Nations Secretary General invoked a host of other urgent challenges facing humanity.
03:05 Our world is becoming unhinged.
03:08 Geopolitical tensions are rising.
03:10 Global challenges are mounting.
03:13 And we seem incapable of coming together to respond.
03:17 We confront a host of existential threats, from the climate crisis to disruptive technologies,
03:24 and we do so at the time of chaotic transition.
03:29 This year`s UN General Assembly, the world`s body`s 78th, runs until September 26th.
03:40 Renewed fighting in the Nagorno-Karabakh region on Tuesday after Azerbaijan`s military
03:44 shelled Armenian positions in what Baku has described as an anti-terrorist operation.
03:50 At least two civilians were killed and 23 wounded by heavy artillery fire around the
03:54 region`s capital.
03:56 The clashes began after two civilians and four Azeri policemen were killed in landmine
04:00 explosions in the area.
04:03 Azerbaijan said it was ready to negotiate if Karabakh Armenian forces surrendered, while
04:07 Moscow called for calm.
04:21 The president of the European Council, Jean-Michel, called on Baku to immediately stop its military
04:26 actions to allow for a genuine dialogue with the Karabakh Armenians.
04:31 Armenian and Azerbaijan have fought two wars over the region since the fall of the Soviet
04:34 Union 30 years ago.
04:36 In the early 1990s, the conflict resulted in over 30,000 deaths and Armenian control
04:40 over the territory.
04:42 In 2022, after a six-week war, Azerbaijan gained control of a third of Nagorno.
04:52 Greek MEP Ava Kaili is challenging the Belgian justice system.
04:56 Through her lawyers, she claims that the country`s police and secret services violated her parliamentary
05:01 immunity.
05:04 The former European Parliament vice president, who was arrested last December for participating
05:08 in a corruption scandal linked to non-EU countries, including Qatar, is not the only one who has
05:14 taken legal action against the Belgian justice system.
05:17 The two other MEPs involved in the scandal have also appealed.
05:20 Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino and Belgian MEP Mark Tarabella.
05:28 If they are vindicated, the whole case could collapse.
05:31 On Tuesday in Brussels, the first hearing took place in the now familiar Palais de Justice.
05:36 These hearings are based on two pillars.
05:39 One is that the right to asylum violated by the Belgian secret services.
05:44 And this is due to the absolute cancellation of the proceedings.
05:48 The second and most important institution is that the witness of the case, Mr. Michel
05:53 Ples, was in the room of the judge.
05:56 And he denied this.
06:01 He insisted that his son, Mr. Ples, the witness, along with his son, the basic suspect and
06:08 involved MEP, had a common company.
06:11 Eva Kalli was released from prison in April and is active once again in the European Parliament,
06:19 acting as an independent MEP, while in the European Parliament she is a member of the
06:24 European Parliament, acting as an independent MEP, while she awaits trial.
06:31 High interest rates and persistent inflation are dragging down Europe's growth prospects,
06:39 particularly in Germany.
06:41 The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, or OECD, has released its
06:46 interim projections for the rest of this year and next.
06:50 The EU area remains on course for a modest expansion of 0.6% in 2023, but it's being
06:56 held back by a slowdown in German manufacturing.
06:59 Globally, the prospects for manufacturing look weak.
07:02 And while the outlook is still positive for services, it has deteriorated since May.
07:07 We see large differences across countries.
07:09 The outlook is stronger in the US than it is in Europe.
07:12 And across both areas, companies now expect less activity than they did six months ago.
07:17 There's significant divergence within the Eurozone's main economies.
07:22 While Germany's growth is forecast to fall 0.2%, Spain will surge by 2.3%, and France
07:29 and Italy will see slight gains.
07:32 Falling energy prices are boosting growth globally, with the US and some emerging countries
07:37 performing well in 2023.
07:40 But China's stagnant economy is expected to restrict growth around the world next year.
07:47 Clean up online.
07:51 That was the slogan chanted by demonstrators in Brussels who demanded swift EU action to
07:57 adopt the Child Sexual Abuse Regulation, also known as CHAT Control.
08:02 Child safety on. Child safety on.
08:05 The activists wore hazmat suits and were holding cleaning materials, symbolising the internet
08:09 being a dirty and dangerous place for kids in Europe.
08:14 Some demonstrators of the NGO Brave Movement were themselves victims of sexual abuse in
08:20 their childhood.
08:22 Now they want the EU to act against online sexual predators, grooming and the harassment
08:27 of children.
08:29 One in five children, one in five of your children, will be sexually abused before the
08:35 age of 15 or 16.
08:37 And a lot of them, it will be online.
08:40 And unfortunately, Europe at the moment hosts 60% of the world sexual abuse online.
08:48 The CHAT Control Act would require big tech companies to scan for and detect child sexual
08:53 abuse material, even in private encrypted messages.
08:57 While some member states remain critical of the issue, activists call on the EU not to
09:02 water down the legislation.
09:05 This is really a legislation that can protect the children online.
09:09 Online and the online community is constantly growing because of the technology and the
09:13 tech companies expanding.
09:15 And we don`t know what the future holds.
09:17 This is so new.
09:18 All of the new technology, social media that has come to fruition in my childhood, we don`t
09:23 know how that affects the children.
09:25 And this legislation would protect the children now, but also in the future.
09:30 But the CHAT Control Act has provoked backlash among pro-privacy activists and NGOs across
09:35 Europe.
09:36 In an open letter, they warned that in its current form, the law would allow the scanning
09:40 of people`s messages, violating in the process the rights of hundreds of millions of Europeans.
09:46 One researcher tells Euronews that she hopes the law will fail.
09:51 The technology will not only look for child pornography.
09:54 When the technology is there to look for something, we know that it will be used for other things.
09:59 Right?
10:00 Because you can check anything.
10:03 Once the mechanism is in place, governments, big tech, hackers that actually hack into
10:09 systems, which is something that we also know happened, can actually use this hole to check
10:14 into our communications.
10:16 EU member states will discuss the CHAT Control Act at the end of September.
10:21 The European Parliament will also discuss it in October with a possible vote on the issue
10:27 later this year.
10:34 Manchester United are set to face Bayern Munich in a highly anticipated Champions League clash
10:39 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
10:42 United, who have had a turbulent start to their Premier League season with three losses
10:46 in their first five games, will desperately be looking to bounce back.
10:49 But with Harry Kane leading the German attack, this game could further test Eric Ten Hag's
10:54 early season expectations.
10:56 Jadon Sancho didn't train with the first team as his fallout with the manager continues,
11:00 whilst Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will be serving a touchline ban.
11:04 These two sides have met 11 times in the Champions League, with the Bavarians yet to lose at
11:09 home against their English rivals.
11:11 In the other games, Arsenal will be looking to get their Champions League campaign off
11:14 to a winning start when they lock horns with PSV Eindhoven in London.
11:18 In Group C, Real Madrid welcome Union Berlin at the Bernabeu, whilst Sporting Braga will
11:23 face a tough test against Napoli in their informed strike of Victor Osserman.
11:27 And after ten years away from Europe's top competition, Real Sociedad will lock horns
11:32 with last year's finalists Inter Milan, who should have the mental edge in Spain after
11:36 thumping arch-rivals AC Milan 5-1 in Serie A.
11:39 Carry on.
